Newspoll: 50-50

Scott Morrison gains further momentum in his remarkable but apparently voteless approval rating turnaround.

Courtesy of The Australian, the first Newspoll in three weeks is consistent with the last in suggesting the coronavirus surge in approval for Scott Morrison in translating into only a modest dividend on voting intention, on which the two parties are now tied after the Coalition opened up a 51-49 lead last time. On the primary vote, the Coalition is down a point to 41%, Labor up two to 36%, the Greens down one to 12% and One Nation down one to 4%. Despite that, Scott Morrison has gained further on his huge approval rating boost in the last poll, up seven to 68% — a level not seen since Kevin Rudd reached 70% in late 2008 — while his disapproval rating is down seven to 28%. Anthony Albanese is respectively steady at 45% and down two to 34% (I assume — the report says 36%, but this would be unchanged on last time), and Morrison’s lead as preferred prime minister is now 56-28, out from 53-29. The poll was conducted Wednesday to Saturday from a sample of 1519.

  1. I’m not against the app.

What I’m against is the way its distracting from more important things that the government should be doing.

  2. The Prime Minister’s approval rating rose a further seven points to 68 per cent, marking an unprecedented 27-point increase since the first week of March.

Hawaii holiday soon forgotten. As predicted by a few here.

  3. Not surprised Morrison’s approvals are positive and expect that to remain so for the time being but the Liberals would be frustrated it isn’t boosting the TPP. The ALP would be happy with 50:50.

  4. MB
Yes surprised myself TPP not higher. However Morrison would have pissed a few conservatives off with handouts to poorer people rather than look after his mates as usual.

mundo will NOT be happy. And, he’ll nitpick at something Labor should have done better as they SHOULD be ahead. 🙄

I wonder how this app would go on my iPhone 4? The phone is getting old and the battery tends to lose its charge rather quickly and needs to be recharged often.

Apparently the app is hard on battery charge. The phone will be useless if the battery goes flat while I am out.

And that’s exactly the reason why I and my Millennial son have decided not to download the app.

Your phone has to be always on to enable the Bluetooth to talk to the other phones. So the battery will cop a pasting.

Also, we have survived the peak of the crisis without it and our movements aren’t changing, so we don’t really need it.

Maybe, when my son starts work in about 3 month’s time at an Aged Care Facility.

  7. Looks like Morrison’s approval is entirely based on Virus Response.

I doubt whether the punters “approve” all aspects of his stewardship, across all potfolios and all time, past, present and future.

They’re just saying, “So far, so good. He hadn’t obviously dropped the ball.”

To be expected actually. First fuck up will see a reassessment.

If I was him I’d be worried about that 2PP. No good being the leader of a government that gets voted out.

  8. steve davis
Morrison sugar coated that by saying it is for six months but it also tells me that the feared backlash against rising newstart was more feared than reality.

  9. I’m content with 50/50 at this stage. Wait until the LNP try to reduce the jobseeker payment – which will occur – and watch the numbers change.

  10. 50:50 is probably reflected in the fact that Bushfire $$ aren’t being received, nor is the dog’s breakfast JobKeeper receiving wide approval.

  11. 50:50 also reflects disapproval of Dutton and the stormtroopers allowing the ship of death to dock in Sydney.

  12. I see the clowns in the clown car have been chatting to each other:

Albo is about as popular as Shorten

    This not so good.
    Not surprising.
    Could be worse.

Those nuanced messages Albo has been sending don’t seem to be cutting through.

    And are unlikely to.

  13. The NSW study of student transmission looked at students with coronavirus diagnosed between 5 March 2020 and 3 April 2020

  14. I also think there is a clear split between those that support and are following the restrictions and those that are indifferent or disagree with them. It seems to be along gender and age lines which is why seat polling could be interesting in electorates like Wentworth where there seems to be a real polarisation with the restrictions.

  15. Can I recommend Daughters of Destiny on Netflix? What a great Doco. It’s about a school that educates the poorest of the poor in India, the so called untouchables. They get an advanced education and prove the lie of their inferiority by going onto work for some of the biggest companies in the world. Tissues required.

  16. Rudd had some spectacular numbers. Then he had to be chopped down so that Bill Shorten could go from PSEC to minister in one term on the backbench and set up his run for leader. 13 years later the ALP is still suffering from the consequences of that. Just ask Albo, he’ll tell you.

  17. From the previous thread.

From Labor’s commander of cavalry, Lord Lucian Mundo:

As the Lord Vishnu of Poll Bludger has pointed out, Albo’s current approval rating is 4% higher than shorten’s best ever rating, and 12% higher than his to date average.

45% personal approval (only 36% disapproval), Primary vote up, 50-50 2PP. Government rising the crest of the ‘rally around the flag’ wave. 2 years to the next election, with a terrible hard row to hoe for SfM once the government lets the economy out of lockdown, only to find that its shrunk by 10-15% with many of our large export markets faarked, and only marketing spin, business tax cuts and austerity in their ideological cupboard to offer? Aye, I like them numbers comrade. Game. On.

  19. I think the punters like that Morrison doesn’t promote drinking Draino.

The 2PP indicative that the punters don’t like losing their jobs, super, franking credits, house values, freedom to go to the beach – and they won’t like recession or depression much more.

  20. What is amazing is that the Abbott/Turnbull/Morrison Government Roller-coaster of mayhem is still rolling along at 50-50 and with decent stats for the current talking head. 2013-2020. “Yes we’ve been shit, but we keep getting voted in”. That should be their motto.

  21. I think Shorten was a better ALP leader than Albanese is. Shorten had some fight and policy courage, Albanese seems to just want to turn the ALP into the moderate Liberals for high speed rail. The sooner the Greens win Grayndler, the better, including for the ALP.

    Lols.

Testament to the power of spin from the combined efforts of the three factions the Liberal party: Costello World, Lil’ Kerry Land and the Rupeverse. Not to mention the completely gormless efforts efforts of the gormless crew at their ABC.

    Beggars belief.
But then in the absence of any real opposition….say no more.

  24. (from previous thread)

Of course everyone’s forgotten about the spreadsheets, about any number of ”-gates”. Even so, if surveyed, I’d have answered ’approve’ to the question regarding how well I believe the PM and the Government are handling the Virus – because I do. Qualified by ”SO FAR”.

However, there are worrying signs that the PM might be listening to Big Money regarding the recovery. Why not leave schools another couple of weeks? Could schools be cruise ships on land? And why would tax cuts or industrial relations ”reform” help the recovery?

I don’t approve the corruption and crony capitalism on show before the Virus, which will be sure to to be a feature during the recovery. Nor for that matter do I approve his stupid hand on heart showy patriotism. What’s wrong with a dignified standing to attention with head slightly bowed. The USA is the last nation we should be emulating.

    (end rant)

The Victorian Liberal governments black gangs crap at the last election was bad, and they lost really badly on that little fiasco, but this is worse.

    https://www.theage.com.au/politics/victoria/victoria-digs-in-on-school-closures-as-tehan-calls-for-may-opening-20200426-p54nby.html

The Liberal Death squad rides again.

Yes, I saw Michael O’Brien on the 9 News tonight trying to make the case for school re-opening. The Attire Attack Squadron will have a field day! He had a shirt on with no tie and the top two buttons undone to reveal untrimmed chest hair! Quel Horreur!

I guess they’ll have to find something else to attack Dan Andrews for now. 😆

Also, Dan Andrews simply said that wrt school opening he would do exactly as the medical experts advised him to do. He’s certainly not going to take politically opportunistic instruction from Liberal politicians, that’s for sure.

  28. Mike Kelly sadly has health issues from his time in the Army, which he has recently revealed as renal failure

    https://www.sbs.com.au/news/labor-mp-mike-kelly-opens-up-on-the-life-threatening-health-scare-that-almost-forced-him-to-quit

This has led to a congaline of Libs and Nats measuring the curtains in the Queanbeyan electorate office – and their running dogs in the Murdoch press pushing for retirement, and by election in Eden Monaro.

Here is the latest self serve from the propaganda arm of the LNP

“Voters in the seat of Eden-Monaro could be headed for a by-election as Sky News understands Labor MP Mike Kelly is considering retirement pending further medical advice. Sky News Political Editor Andrew Clennell revealed Mr Kelly, who has had medical issues dating back to his time in the Army, would make a decision this week. “I contacted Mr Kelly after rumours swept Labor he may be going. He told me ‘I haven’t made up my mind’ on his future and he would be doing so this week,” Mr Clennell said.

Mr Clennell said NSW Deputy Premier John Barilaro, Liberal Senator Jim Molan, and NSW Transport Minister Andrew Constance’s names had all been floated as candidates should Mr Kelly retire. Mr Kelly’s retirement would plunge the seat into a by-election, but it is unclear if the federal government would want voters to go to the polls immediately given the current COVID-19 restrictions.

  29. nath,

They get an advanced education and prove the lie of their inferiority by going onto work for some of the biggest companies in the world. Tissues required.

Thanks for pointing this doco out. I have many Indian colleagues, and they tell me the stories about their caste, and how it did not stop them doing what they wanted to achieve.

They talked of “mixed marriages” between people of different castes, in the same way that my Irish Catholic family did, and we exchanged stories.

I have just turned 60, and many of my sub-continent friends will be will be of a similar age. They are committed to education for all as an essential leveller in what has been a very unequal society. I think their passion and commitment is bearing fruit after many years of advocacy and hard work.

nath, this is your area, not mine, but are their parallels in the fight for universal free education in Britain from the mid-19th century, trade unionism, Engels commentary, and the eventual closing of the gap between classes in the UK after WWII?

  30. I see mundo has climbed out of the hole in the ice to deliver his patented pointless commentary. Just as well no one is taking any notice. Sorry, except for his merry band of miscreants, nath and Rex Douglas. Do they honestly think that moaning about Labor for the next 2 years will produce the result they bombastically crave? I guess they do. Sad.

  31. I can’t believe I used the word gormless twice in one sentence to describe both the ‘jounos’ at the ABC and their pathetic efforts at ‘balance’. Not to worry, I’ve already given myself an uppercut and will strive to do better next time.
