Newspoll: 56-44 to Labor

Newspoll records another miserable result for the Coalition on voting intention, with a small amount of consolation for Scott Morrison on personal ratings.

The second Newspoll of the Scott Morrison era is no better for the Coalition than the first, with Labor maintaining its 56-44 lead. As reported in The Australian, both major parties are up a point on the primary vote, Labor to 42% and the Coalition to 34%. The minor party primary votes are still to come (UPDATE: Greens steady on 10%, One Nation down one to 6%). Newspoll skipped the personal ratings questions a fortnight ago, so its results this week are the first ever for Morrison, and the first in four weeks for Bill Shorten. Morrison is on 41% approval and 39% disapproval, while Shorten is up five on approval to 37% and down five on disapproval to 51%. However, Shorten has not replicated the 39-33 lead he recorded on preferred prime minister in the immediate wake of the leadership change, and now trails 42-36. The poll was conducted Thursday to Sunday from a sample of 1653.

  1. Dear Aunt Mavis, Matt can go and look after his property portfolio, Fiona Phillips is the bestest candidate, and future member, that Gilmore has ever seen. Fiona has not stopped working for a Labor government since the Sunday morning after the last election. Put the house on her!!!

  2. DTT. I thought the same thing about the Miss Piggy thing and don’t see any value in commenting on the physical appearance of others. I find it all cheap and degrading really.

Racist stereotypes and other hate speech is probably a step further on from there as European history shows.

    “Gasp! Anti-semitism!!!”

Anti-shit-movie. Someone lent us the DVD; I walked out half way through, my OH (bless her) stayed till the end. Spoiler: Gonzo comes from another planet.

The worst DVD I watched (or tried to watch) recently had Baron Munchausen in the title. Utter shite. Neither of us were able to stick around till the end (despite two G&T’s on my part).

  4. “DTT, caricatures are racist. ”

    Ah dunno.

If Aussies are called sunburned, laid-back, anti-class, fun-loving, larrikins, is that racist?

    On the other hand,

If Aussies are called lazy, boozy, ugly, loud-mouthed, disrespectul, SoBs, is that racist?

  5. Morning, well, afternoon all.

With the focus on a ‘recovery’ in preferred prime Minister in the latest Newspoll with Morrison ahead of Shorten,
what would they write if in a poll there was a meaningful improvement on 2PP to 53-47, but Shorten ahead on PPM?

Do they headline ‘Shorten in the lead’, does the press gallery opine all is over for the government?

  6. The concept “race” is a fiction. There is no such category. But racism – the use of stereotypes to attach negative values or to impugn, defame, discredit, demean, ostracise, reject, exile, dispossess or dehumanise specific individuals, groups or members of groups – certainly exists.

Thanks for that graph. It seems to be showing that Howard’s PPM figures fell away as well which surprises me. Probably as a result of his introduction of work choices.

  8. Re William et al. anti-Semitism.

Perhaps I did fly off the handle at SK but I did ask him after his comment:

Nath:What exactly do you mean by that?
SK: The truth may be out there, but you can never be sure of exactly where it is atr any given moment and how fast it is travelling.

I guess it was the evasiveness of this response that set me off. He then gave another explanation which said there were certain ‘facial resemblances’. I can’t see any. SK claimed to be unaware that Frydenberg was Jewish, fair enough, but I point out that it is well documented and he was just sworn in as Treasurer wearing a kippah. I doubted his protestations but agreed to let it rest seeing that he denied it strenuously. If he is the person he says he is then I apologize for my invective and the allegation.

  9. “The notion invites a certain kind of false heroism. If I convince myself that I’m on God’s side, then what of those who oppose me?”

Will Morrison instigate a cultural / religious conflict with the aid of Ruddock, someone else that was partial to lapel badges.

  10. The reputation of the Murdoch media group is what it is

And I would suggest its days of relevance are well behind it because of its reputation

The same applies to the media outlets that associate with Murdoch

No to both, because ‘Australian’ isn’t a race?

I think it’s acceptable to refer to anti-Australian (or anti-American, or anti-Canadian) bigotry as racism, given that racism can be used colloquially to refer to bigotry of the grounds of nationality, culture, and religion.

E.g. it is widely accepted that anti-Muslim rhetoric and behaviour can be described as racist, despite ‘Muslim’ not strictly being a race.

Similiarly, anti-Mexican rhetoric and behaviour in the US is clearly racist, despite the fact that Mexico is in fact a multicultural nation made up of European Mexicans, Mestizos, Indigenous Mexicans, African-Mexicans, and others.

“So who is the ‘real’ Morrison? Is he an imitation ocker, like Rudd tried to be for a while?”

    Think you’ve nailed it.

  13. So Andrew Bragg has pulled out of the race for Wentworth, stating the Liberal Party needs to preselect a woman, but none have nominated. Very strange; I can’t help suspecting that either he knew he wasn’t going to win the preselection, or fears the Liberals may actually not win the seat.

Yeah, so why does the ABC persist with so many Murdoch hacks to comment on political developments?

This morning we were treated to Andrew Clenell (?) NSW political correspondent fr the Australian opining that the Liberal’s problem was not its policies, which were fine, but the messaging, which was dreadful.

Standard bullshit excuses, none of which were challenged by the hosts.

When the ABC has its own NSW political correspondent, it’s doubly ridiculous to resort to Murdoch spin.

DTT, caricatures are racist. If Gonzo were deemed to be or represent one, Nath would have a rather powerful point. However, the fact that the Gonzo puppet has a strange nose strikes me as being extremely thin gruel on this score. I Googled to see if it was common for similarities to be noted between Gonzo to anti-Semitic caricatures on this basis – and it’s not.

Well I admit I had not thought of Gonzo as in any sense Jewish (mind you I am not a muppets officionado)

    William Bowe @ #618 Monday, September 10th, 2018 – 4:39 pm

The Jewish muppet is surely Fozzy Bear. There is nothing notable about his nose. Or indeed Josh Frydenberg’s.

I think Fozzy was reserved for Scomo. I would have picked telly Monster for Frydenberg and of course (this is a bit racist) the Swedish chef for Cormann and Crazy Harry for Abbott
    Pyne for Bigbird
    Oscar the Grouch ?
    Warren Ench is definitely Floyd
    Yolanda the rat for Michaelia

  16. When nominations for the Wentworth preselections closed, these were the three women on the list:

    Mary-Lou Jarvis

    Katherine O’Regan

    Maxine Szramka

  17. Cowards!!

    Paul Karp
Liberal champions for banning live sheep exports – Sussan Ley, Sarah Henderson and Jason Wood – have all voted with the government against Labor’s attempt to force a debate on the bill. Nobody crossed the floor, despite the Senate passing a bill to ban live exports.

Labor has now attempted to suspend standing orders but the government is set to shut that down too.

Oh, spare me the hand-wringing about climate change being too tough a political issue, Josh. We had a climate law that had passed both houses of Parl, was cutting pollution & delivering compo to households AND YOUR GOVERNMENT REPEALED IT!!!

  19. I guess it was the evasiveness of this response that set me off.

In the first instance, I was busy and the question didnt seem important. And then you made reference to my “balls” which, at the time, made no sense to me so I assumed you were just baiting (which I didnt have time for or interest in). In retrospect I can see why you said that.

And when shiftaling made a comment asking why I made the comparison I started to wonder what was going on. I still didnt twig, but I thought I should at least explain the comparison.

I must have been living under a very comfortable and innocent rock. I had no idea about the caricature (I must have come across it – but it didnt stick). I didnt even know ‘Jewish’ was an ethnoreligion (although having met some Jews of Samarkand, I wonder about that). And Frydenbergs religion is simply not something I keep tabs on.

  20. Have you ever noticed when push comes to shove, Liberal rebels never follow through on their threats to cross the floor. This is especially so of votes on issues close to their hearts and allegedly a bedrock of their personal commitment to making politics more real.

  21. So who can you trust?

    Joel Fitzgibbon‏Verified account @fitzhunter · 6m6 minutes ago

Unlike the Senate the House votes 72-70 against a vote to phase-out of #livesheep exports. After putting up their own Bill for a phase-out, Sussan Ley & Sarah Henderson voted against their own convictions #auspol

  22. Apparently Sharkhie will support a motion referring Dutton under s44, but not support a motion of no confidence in either the Government or Dutton
