Newspoll: 56-44 to Labor

Newspoll records another miserable result for the Coalition on voting intention, with a small amount of consolation for Scott Morrison on personal ratings.

The second Newspoll of the Scott Morrison era is no better for the Coalition than the first, with Labor maintaining its 56-44 lead. As reported in The Australian, both major parties are up a point on the primary vote, Labor to 42% and the Coalition to 34%. The minor party primary votes are still to come (UPDATE: Greens steady on 10%, One Nation down one to 6%). Newspoll skipped the personal ratings questions a fortnight ago, so its results this week are the first ever for Morrison, and the first in four weeks for Bill Shorten. Morrison is on 41% approval and 39% disapproval, while Shorten is up five on approval to 37% and down five on disapproval to 51%. However, Shorten has not replicated the 39-33 lead he recorded on preferred prime minister in the immediate wake of the leadership change, and now trails 42-36. The poll was conducted Thursday to Sunday from a sample of 1653.

  1. So, you give MPs from your own side extreme latitude to answer questions because the question asked of them wasn’t appropriate in your, the Speakers’, eyes!?!

  3. Label pin watch has also hit the Senate:

    Not wearing it:

    Mathias Cormann

    Simon Birmingham

    Mitch Fifield

    Marise Payne

    Matt Canavan

Actually, it doesn’t look like anyone on the Senate frontbench is wearing it. At this rate it might be easier if we could find a minister who IS wearing the sacred pin of Australian-ness.

Andrew Bragg stepping aside to help a woman run in Wentworth is odd, given it’s understood he is now likely to take a very high spot on the Liberal Party Senate ticket at the next election – a position that could also have been filled by a woman

  5. Hilarious …
    Catherine King to Greg Hunt:

Can the minister confirm that the last time this house met, he supported a Turnbull Government on Monday, voted for a Dutton Government on Tuesday, said he supported a Turnbull Government on Wednesday, called for a Dutton Government on Thursday and pledged his loyalty to a Morrison Government on Friday?

Can the minister confirm when he told the house he supported MalcolmTurnbull he’d already decided to support someone else? What is the minister’s response to the Prime Minister describing his behaviour as ‘like being the Muppet show’?
    Hunt:
He talks about the PBS and health funding.

  6. This image that Morrison has tried to project that he is warm and cuddly is effortlessly revealed to be a brittle, thin veneer of pretense.

  7. UNIONS!!!! can we please have someone draw the correlation between reduced union membership and fall in wages in real terms?

  8. The fibs have been carrying on about law and order in Victoria and violence.
Have they said anything yet on the latest atrocity to occur in Perth?
Five members from one family murdered. And recently another three members of one family.
    Very disconcerting stuff

  9. Zoomster I don’t think calling out the use of racial stereotypes could be construed as stereotyping, if based on a sincere belief that it had occurred. Otherwise how is hate speech ever to be challenged?

  10. Questions:

Why is Mike Pence on the front bench wearing an Australia pin?

Why is Kelly O’Dwyer not wearing one? Is she a Dutto?

Nor Greggie – who has questions to answers, and rattles on about health or sumfink.

    I have the sound muted.

Who’s this bozo conducting an orchestra?

By the way, Simon Katich (u/c2)

My brother and I used to trade nose insults. I’d call him hook nose, he’d call me Eye-tye nose. We didn’t know there Italians Jews. Must be a cultural thing.

btw, we both had the same shaped nose.

  11. In fact your logic chain for someone calling out racial stereotyping (“having a long nose = Jewish = anti Semiticism”) seems to presume that it is the person querying the statement that is making the racial stereotype. In fact the existence of the racial stereotypes themselves is objectively known, and is the basis for the objection. The questioner is not themselves presuming the stereotype to be true of the target of the speech in question.

The logic is “having a long nose = anti-semitic racist trope = anti-semitism”
    not
    “Long nose = jewish = anti-semitism”

  12. L/NP now aiming to placate Muslim parents over withdrawal of school funding?

Australia’s largest Islamic school has had its funding permanently restored by new federal Education Minister Dan Tehan, after several years of court battles.

The Malek Fahd Islamic School’s future hung in the balance after a full bench of the Federal Court dismissed an appeal against its $19 million federal funding cut earlier this year.

Former federal education minister Simon Birmingham cut the school’s funding in 2016, saying it had several governance issues and was operating at a profit.

  13. The Silver Bodgie:

[‘Sudmalis been promoted to Chief head nodder.’]

She won’t be the ‘Chief head nodder’ come the election, her margin in Gilmore being 0.7% – that’s why she’s seated behind the despatch box.

She was also panned in her electorate for backing the cuts to Sunday penalty rates.

I’d like to see Matt Brown, the former Member for Kiama, contest Gilmore. True it is, he got into a bit of bother over the alleged erotic dancing incident, but he’s a damn decent person, a good Labor man.

If you’re lurking Matt, I remember you well when our paths crossed at Uni. Such a shame to learn that Judge (and the inaugural Dean of Law at Wollongong Uni.) Jack Goldring died. I only recently found out that he passed three years ago – vale Jack.

Presumably to support Morrison’s insistence on “choice”. Home schoolers will soon receive extra funding. (I’m not against home schooling, but which public schools will lose money?)

  15. I see that some of my fellow bludgers have gotten into something of a twist when trying to ascribe certain characters from the muppet show to the current Morrison government front bench.

This is a wasted effort in my view and as it turns out not good for the continuation of comity and goodwill amongst bludgers.

It was ScoMo who drew the comparison so in my view the only relevant character is that of Fuzzy Bear being ScoMo himself. Which is perfect.

In the original Pope cartoon ScoMo / Fuzzy Bear his holding the severed heads of JBish (as Miss Piggy) and Lucien Aye (as Kermit) which was particularly apt.

I reckon that as long as ScoMo as Fuzzy remains the various other cast members can be used interchangeably with various liberals and nats as the context requires …

  16. Um

If i say Chnese people have dark mostly straght hair is that racist?
If i say Chinese and particularly Inuit have snub noses, is that racist?
If I say Mbuti are very short in stature is that racist
If I say Zulus have dark skin is thatracist?
If i say Meleaesians have very dark skin is that racist
Id I say scandinatians a tall and light haired is thatract.
If I say a lot of Irish people have snoots that are rather large and seem to grow with age s that racist
If I say that manyCelts have red hair ad freckles is that racist.
if I say than many Germans have square heads is that racist
If I say that there is a Mediterranean nose that s a little large and has a bit of a hook would that be racist.

So why s is racist to say that many (not all Jewsh people have largish noses with a hook (as do many Greeks and Italians and Arabic people). Is it OK to say that many have dark wavy hair. Is it OK to say many are good at music and maths.
Think on this. Yes i know that it is a bit of a trope but so is picturing a scottish gy in a kilt or an irish girl with bright red hair carrying a shamrock or a swiss guy with a little moustache wearing lederhausen or indeed an Aussie guy looking Like Les Patterson.
Tropes are tropes – not racist. Frenchmen skinny and dark with a striped shirt and beret, Pommies looking like John Cleese.

Yes Jewish people have been the victims of racism, but as of now in 2018, in the world racism affected scales they do not rate – Rohinga, Indigenous Australian, Dalits, Blacks in the USA, Muslims of all kinds, some Asians all cop it much, much ,much worse than Jewish people. Get some perspective.

  17. DTT, caricatures are racist. If Gonzo were deemed to be or represent one, Nath would have a rather powerful point. However, the fact that the Gonzo puppet has a strange nose strikes me as being extremely thin gruel on this score. I Googled to see if it was common for similarities to be noted between Gonzo to anti-Semitic caricatures on this basis – and it’s not.

  18. The extent of anti-semitic propaganda makes it a valid objection. Show me a widespread conspiracy-theory movement depicting scottish girls in kilts as evil conspiracy puppeteers that need to be subject to action up to and including genocide and there might be a point.

No one said that facial characteristics based on heritage don’t exist, nor that anti-semitic propaganda is the only form of hate speech, that doesn’t mean it is permissible.

  19. I doubt when they invented characters like puppets or cartoons yesteryear the makers ever intended to offend anyone. It probably never crossed their minds.

  20. steve davis

A bit of a lol re the to and fro as to what ‘Gonzo is or is not representative of is …….. From wiki.

A running gag related to Gonzo is that it is not clear what species he is supposed to be.

  21. Apropos of nothing, I tried the search that William presumably refers to above and turned up a sub-cultural mash-up of Hunter S Thomson and Judaism that would probably never have crossed my path otherwise!

  22. Given this afternoons conversation about the physical attributes of the Chosen People I detect that there may be a few PBers who belong to the People’s Liberation Front Of Judea. Splitters.

  23. William
In an earlier post I asked if anyone could provide the PPM figures for Rudd and Howard when Rudd became the LOTO (the first time) and as far as I am aware no-one replied. Are you able to assist with that please?

The point I am hoping to make is that while Rudd was a mile in front of the Libs on pv and 2pp (and went on to easily win the election in 2007) it did not reflect in the PPM at the time, thus showing that the PPM figure is largely irrelevant in such a situation.

  24. Shiftaling

There were plenty about Irish 70 years ago – lazy, stupid, thieving drunk more than rich conspirators. All those Irish jokes!!!

Scotts were tight fisted – Where i grew up there was a paid beach car parking area and another at the far end of the beach where it was free. It was known locally as Scotsman’s Beach because it was free.

Now several people here myself included commented about Miss piggy and Amanda Vanstone. That was FAT Shaming pure and simple and offensive to more people (including myself)

So OK if we do not want to use nationality/physical tropes of any kind fine – but that includes ALL ones including likening Barnyard to Les Patterson and jokes about weight or height, of Julia Gillard’s backside or Tony’s ears.
