Newspoll: 53-47 to Labor

Newspoll records the same two-party preferred result for the sixth poll in a row.

Yet another 53-47 result from Newspoll, from primary votes of Coalition 36% (unchanged), Labor 36% (down one), Greens 11% (up two) and One Nation 8% (down one). Both leaders recorded better personal ratings, with Malcolm Turnbull up four on approval to 38% and down four on disapproval to 50%, and Bill Shorten up three on approval to 36% and down two on disapproval to 51%. Turnbull’s lead on preferred prime minister has widened from 43-32 to 46-31. The poll was conducted Thursday to Sunday from a sample of 1639.

Stay tuned for federal voting intention results from the Queensland-only poll conducted for the Courier-Mail, from which state results were published yesterday.

UPDATE: The numbers from the Courier-Mail’s Galaxy poll from Queensland, conducted Wednesday and Thursday from a sample of 902, are Coalition 37% (up two since April), Labor 32% (down one), One Nation 12% (down three) and Greens 7%, with Australian Conservatives recording a fairly impressive 6%. On two-party preferred, the Coalition records a lead of 51-49, which compares with 50-50 in April and 54.1-45.9 at last year’s election.

    Losing faith with their Liberal base seems to have been the overriding concern if they went to a Free Vote.

    So much for the Liberal “ideal” of free MPs.

  2. Reaffirming plebiscite policy is not inconsistent with this additional notion of a free Parly vote by year-end if both versions of pleb failed to materialise (though I’d be rather doubtful the right-wing loonies would cop that aspect).

    As reported, party room told this is Cabinet’s position:
    1. Try again for plebiscite
    2. If that fails, go postal
    3. Free vote by end of year

    Win for the RWNJs as they can arse around on introducing the plebiscite legislation and then have a drawn out talkfest on how a postal plebiscite would work.

    It will interesting what Smith’s response is and it seems there are only 7 potential floor crossers.

    So Abbott won?

    Turnbull has to go through the ritual theatre and criticism of his two Plebiscite ideas being again rejected by the parliament in both Houses.

    Abbott,Abetz and the nats can continue to ramp up their criticisms of Turnbull as a weak Leader.

    No guarantee that this Parliament would supprt SSM given Labor MPs still have a conscience vote on the matter.

    Had to laugh at GG invoking Australian history and saying marriage has always been between a man and a woman.

    It is hardly surprising considering for a majority of Australia’s existence as a country homosexual acts were illegal.

    In that light you would not even consider marriage between two people who in all likelihood would perform criminal acts together.

    I actually said in “Australia”. kakurra seemed to think Australia existed as a law making entity back in the 18 th century. But, if you want to lie about my post, carry on!]

    Were is my lie.

    So you never said that marriage in Australia has always been between a man and a woman?

  6. 4 spoke up with concerns about the Postal Plebiscite:

    * Tony Abbott
    * Julian Leeser
    * Russel Broadbent
    * Someone else

  7. The only sure thing is that this schemozzle will continue to dog the Libs well into the foreseeable future.

    Meanwhile…rapidly rising energy prices, stagnant wages, the CBA scandal, the list goes on and on.

    Just announced – @AustralianLabor will join the Greens in opposing gov plans to drug test welfare recipients! Great news #helpnotharm

  9. Cormann saying that if Plebiscite comes back positive to change the law, government will facilitate a Private Members Bill in the parliament to allow SSM and allow a Free Vote (?Conscience Vote)

  10. “Going Postal”. Very apt.

    Cormann says the plebiscite would be compulsory; if Senate blocks again, claims “legal and constitutional” right to call postal plebiscite

  11. So have we heard from the 7 liberals who wanted a free vote?

    Are they intending to put forward the private members bill after the senate and court stop the plebiscites?

    Cormann saying that if Plebiscite comes back positive to change the law, government will facilitate a Private Members Bill in the parliament to allow SSM and allow a Free Vote (?Conscience Vote)

    …extraordinary..it would take a plebiscite move them to do something they can do any hour, any day…

    Cormann saying that if Plebiscite comes back positive to change the law, government will facilitate a Private Members Bill in the parliament to allow SSM and allow a Free Vote (?Conscience Vote)

    So even in the hypothetical scenario whereby the public affirms same-sex marriage, Coalition MPs still get to vote however they like?

    Miserable Rotten Bastards.

  14. Cormann says the plebiscite would be compulsory; if Senate blocks again, claims “legal and constitutional” right to call postal plebiscite…

    Equally extraordinary….if the Parliament refuses a measure to do something, they will assert it must be done in any case….Really, what is the point of a legislature in these circumstances?

  15. [Senate showdown this week?

    Finance Minister Mathias Cormann says the same sex marriage plebiscite bill will go back to the Senate for another vote.

    It was rejected by Labor and the Senate crossbench late last year.

    Senator Cormann says he hopes the bill will be sent to the Upper House this week. It is likely to be voted down again.

    Here’s what he said:

    If that were to fail, the government believes that we have a legal and constitutional way forward to give the Australian people a say on whether or not the definition of marriage should be changed through a non-legislated, voluntary postal plebiscite.]

    This would give the Government their first DD trigger.

    They could then call a DD on this issue and maintain their promise to the people with the election becoming the plebiscite on SSM.

    Yeah, Nah. Can’t see it. 🙂

  16. According to Jane Norman the rebel group may still try and bring their SSM Bill to the floor of parliament and cross the floor to get it up.

    I’m thinking Russel Broadbent may have been the one other to vote with the rebels. If so it makes it very interesting.

  17. Why don’t I believe this?

    Debate being described as “respectful” and that the partyroom “overwhelmingly supported” Turnbull’s position, according to one Lib MP. @smh

  18. Why is nobody asking the obvious question?

    The SSM Bill goes down a 2nd time in the Senate, it means a double dissolution trigger.

  19. Apologies Barney, great minds think alike.

    I reckon the Lying Waffle may decide to go out in a blaze of DD glory!

    Have we ever had 2 DDs in a row.

    I agree briefly but it would be interesting.

    We will soon know.

    The Liberals have just foregone any chance they had to control the progress of this issue. Had they agreed to a free vote, they would have been able to claim some of the credit for the passage of reform. As it is, they will forever be remembered for their obstinacy and their defeat. They have published their own incredible incompetence.

    These characters are always talking about having a “respectful” debate. Abbott, for one, would not know what the word “respectful” means.

  23. So a solemn promise to the electorate to have a plebiscite which will lead to a non binding vote in the Parliament. How stupid do these people think the public are?

    You have to vote in the plebiscite which we will then choose to ignore or not.

    Just. Do. Your. Jobs….

  24. 7 Liberals in favour of SSM free vote: Jason Wood, Warren Entsch, Trent Zimmermann, Tim Wilson, John Alexander, Dean Smith, Trevor Evans.
