Western Australian election live

A thread for discussion of the Western Australian election count.

And they’re off. Polls have closed, and the first results should be in in half an hour or so. I’ll be part of ABC Radio’s coverage, which you can hear on local radio in Western Australia and around the country on News Radio. Here’s a thread for you all to discuss the action as it occurs.

  1. Re. the ‘it’s time’ argument, if for example in another state, South Australia, Wetherill works hard on a solution to the power problem, with visible progress before the next election, and he and his party avoids scandals, then he could be expected to have a good chance of winning another term.

Also what about that adage, oppositions don’t win elections, the government loses them. Is that only true except when it isn’t?

  2. I would have thought that banning mining coy political advertising should be the absolutely top priority for Labor (and the Nats, Gryllis would love it) – then hit them with a mining tax.

  3. Labor strategists (on fb) pointing to PHON result as proof that if Labor focuses on jobs PHON’s racism doesn’t cut through.

  4. So so happy for Peter and his wife (who is looking over his right shoulder – famous author in her own right!). I sensed on the booth this morning there was a sense of a mood for change but didn’t want to get my hopes up lest it was a sense of change for the sitting member!

    Well done Labor,

  5. Silly margins. 🙂 More port please.

this “never voted labor but are now” thing is good. Get em used to and embed in their brain that its actually ok to vote ALP. Done once its easier for them to do it again at the federal election. 🙂

  6. Jeez, did the ON deal destroy Barnett’s govt? Would he have just scrapped back in without it? Was it the biggest own goal in Australian political history?

  7. Also should point out that this lends weight to Hanson’s claim that her good Senate result was purely thanks to the DD and the Senate reforms.

    Thank you, Malcolm.

  8. Yep, Zoom, jobs, conditions, penalty rates are issues for Labor, followed by Medicare and education.
In times like this stick to your issues.

  9. An emphatic result tonight :). I thought it was going to be good when I spent a couple of hours on a booth in South Perth and the Libs were outnumbered by Labor and Green supporters!

  10. People are cottoning on to the energy debate!
    (ducks)

Take that shit to the general thread and stop trolling an actual election post! FFS you trolls are frickin unbelievable with your bullshit.

  11. briefly, Grimace…any others out there from the WA contingent — excellent results, well deserved. Labor has rediscovered grassroots campaigning and reaping the rewards.

Hopefully the media concentrates on “it’s time”, “tired government”, “PHON deal backfires” etc and doesn’t cotton on.

  12. Hey Fess the energy debate has several sub-threads within it. That privatising the networks is a bloody stoopid idea is what Trog was referring to, and I think most of us can agree on that. And 3 cheers for the new premier of WA!

  13. Confessions
The Western Power debate was a significant factor. It’s a clear factor which is distinguishable from the general malaise of a long incumbent government at the end of a mining boom. It is not the most important factor, but it has been identified by Labor candidates.

  14. Actually, not wanting to troll, but how much was Western Power an issue, or was it lost in PHONgate?
I am speaking from the perspective of NSW, where power has been a big issue for a long time.

  15. BLOODBATH according to Sky News. Well done as an ex sandgroper to all the Labor campaigners and members of this site. You deserve the great victory.

  16. Funding is 4% federally , don’t know what it is in WA but I doubt it’s high enough that PHON won’t make bank, they are over 5%.

  17. Congratulations to all WA Labor Bludgers who have been involved in the campaign. What a beautiful set of numbers!

Nobody should kid themselves that this will stop the Liberals moving to the right. It should, of course, but the rwnjs will see this not for what it is, but a reflection on Turnbull and his leadership. Popcorn time!

Now to see what sort of weird results the LC throws up.

    Predictable reaction.
Apparently issues don’t matter, even when raised by her own candidate.

  19. Actually, not wanting to troll, but how much was Western Power an issue

Watson mentioned it, but then he would. Honestly? I don’t know. I got no sense on the booth this morning, but it may have fed into a general sense of ‘we have to change’ sentiment that was obviously prevalent.

  20. Lesson from this?

There is no substitute for campaigning. The Tories think that means buying ads on TV but labor’s has shown that feet on the ground on the voices on the phone are hard to beat.
For much of this was week be have had the media sneering at Mark “who is he” McGowan.

Well folks, he is going to be the premier.

    Absolutely correct!
We were learning that lesson in Victoria in the last State campaign and locked it in during the Federal campaign. Our best swings were in booths in areas where we had campaigned hardest on the ground.

  22. Another pleasing aspect of this result is that it shows that WA has nowhere near as many rightwing rednecks as Queensland 🙂
