Western Australian election live

A thread for discussion of the Western Australian election count.

And they’re off. Polls have closed, and the first results should be in in half an hour or so. I’ll be part of ABC Radio’s coverage, which you can hear on local radio in Western Australia and around the country on News Radio. Here’s a thread for you all to discuss the action as it occurs.

William Bowe is a Perth-based election analyst and occasional teacher of political science. His blog, The Poll Bludger, has existed in one form or another since 2004, and is one of the most heavily trafficked websites on Australian politics.

  1. Well, the polls and reality have met………………well done Labor! William is just on 11 as I speak! So Green and Bowe of one mind at 7.35 pm….

  2. Why would ANYONE want to go to the PHON after party!?!

    To gloat.
Also, just to listen and see where the RWNJ’s talk about going now.

and at the moment i think the gloat may be premature. 🙁 upper house??

  3. Lets get ready for tory excuse bingo
    1) The message did cut through about the economic management/budget
    2) unfair campaign by the unions/privatisation
    3) Good government just not understood by the voters
I.e. Not our fault, we were great, voters fault

  4. The Libs getting hurt by the PHON deal (and the Nats not losing despite not having one) is actually good for Turnbull. Its demonstratable evidence that catering to the PHON vote isn’t going to pay dividends. It’d be better for him if the Libs had one without a PHON deal but that was never on the table.

  5. Just in case anyone isn’t aware, McGowan lost the last election, and Labor stuck with him as leader. Any correlation with Federal Labor (Rex?)

  6. Absolutely hilarious that Liberal dickhead on ABC 24 saying that penalty rates were not an issue in the WA election. That is a dead give away that he did f’all campaigning during the election.

  7. Elfy – But what does Malcolm do in the Senate? He wants Pauline’s vote but he’s now got to keep his distance – which she won’t appreciate. He’s in a tough position.

  8. Keenan delusional and trying to convince himself as much as anyone that Barnett lost for no other reason that ‘It’s Time’ and hard decisions had to be made over 8 1/2 years.

    What a crock!

  9. Wow.

The shift in 1st preferences away from the Libs must be frightening for them. If anything translates to a federal result it will be that…even if it doesn’t quite generate the swings seen tonight.

Brilliant isn’t it. Just brilliant. There more he needs her the more he damages himself. Brilliant.

  11. ajm:

Fabulous. I’ve been worried for weeks about how Peter would travel this election. He always battles down to the wire each election.
