Newspoll: 53-47 to Labor

Malcolm Turnbull’s personal ratings bounce back from recent lows, amid an otherwise stable set of readings from Newspoll.

Via James J, tomorrow’s Australian brings us another result showing Labor leading 53-47 on two-party preferred, from primary votes of Coalition 38% (down one), Labor 38% (steady) and Greens 10% (steady). For some reason, Malcolm Turnbull’s personal ratings have recorded an uptick, with approval up four to 34% and disapproval down four to 54%, but lead as preferred prime minister is unchanged, shifting from 42-32 to 43-33. Bill Shorten’s ratings are unchanged at 36% approval and 51% disapproval. The poll was conducted Thursday to Sunday from a sample of 1846.

  1. Lets face it … Mal is a glorified salesman. Which is odd because he really cannot think on the hop like an expert salesman should.

He reminds me of the bloke on that property App ad … telling people what he thinks they want to hear, using a little flattery.

He has this obsequious habit of flattering dignitaries a little too much (like Abbott did) rather than positive respectfulness (which was a strong Gillard trait).

And this is what amazes me most about the Katherine Murphys of this world. They, of all people, should see through it more than anyone. Mal is an image. That’s it. There’s nothing else there. Abbott might have had the bravado etc. but he at least had an ideology (though dreadful) to be true to. Malcolm has nothing.

  2. Please excuse the recycling in last post.

I did not realise Bushfire Bill had already posted on this earlier.

Cheers and a good night to all.

  3. Doyley,
Turnbull must have walked under a few ladders lately. His luck is just not in.

I think the cat he killed must have been black. : )

  4. That Whitbourne story gets to the nub of it clearly and concisely.

Brandis really needs to resign. No man should sit in that position without a shred of integrity … and he has zilch.

  5. I think the cat he killed must have been black. : )

Something else he shares with the President-elect: one a self-confessed grabber and the other an alleged strangler of…

Surprise surprise. As predicted, the execrable 7.30 leads with TERRRORISM, and no mention of Brandis.
No wonder the ratings are tanking.

Brandis got hammered well and truly this morning.
The immediate heat has gone out of that and it is now a slow burn.
The capture of Prakesh was actually NEWS.
    You really are totally clueless.

  7. Brandis really needs to resign. No man should sit in that position without a shred of integrity … and he has zilch.

And if he won’t resign he should be sacked.

  8. Just saw on Aunty our Hanson diving off the G B reef. Where are sharks when you need them?

    Or an Irukandji jellyfish.

I assume the taxpayer footed the bill for this little stunt?

  9. And if he won’t resign he should be sacked.

That would require decisive action and integrity. Ain’t going to happen, and the media, especially Our Venerable ABC, will let it slide.

As they say in the classics, imagine if a Labor Attorney General did something remotely similar.

  10. B emused,
I think ‘John Smith’ is owed an apology from all the bullying idiots that piled in on him.

Which I already have done, in case you hadn’t noticed. What you also appear to have missed is that ‘John Smith’ admitted as much that what we said about what he wrote was perfectly justifiable under the circumstances, which he elaborated on tonight at length.

One might expect an apology from you for all the sneering put-downs during the day but I know we will never get it.

  11. The vibe in this neck of the woods anyways is that Labor will win the next election. Personally I’m worried about Peter Watson being re-elected seeing as his Liberal opponent is literally everywhere. It seems you only have to drive down every main road to see a Greg Stocks Liberal emblazoned car on the side of the road (I wonder how many people have offered up their vehicles to be branded, such is the proliferation of Greg Stocks cars everywhere), and Robbie Sutton the Nats candidate is emulating the tactic.

The Nats are also worried about One Nation targetting their seats. I sincerely hope we do not see ON win seats here. The Nationals are far preferable to the populist toxic outrage of the ON party.

Apart from the fact I was catching up and therefore hadn’t seen more recent posts, what’s your problem?
    What sneering put downs?
    Links please.

  13. John Smith..
Well said, and no apology to me needed..

Very best wishes in your struggle ..and give your wonderful wife a big hug ..she deserves it ..and so do you 🙂

  14. Poroti,
Wow! The Beatles were so prescient they even had themselves double-miked to make their vocals less sibilant and to cancel feedback! Something that only started being done in general recently!

  15. ‘That would require decisive action and integrity. Ain’t going to happen, and the media, especially Our Venerable ABC, will let it slide.’

Exactly. It’s happening before it even began. If you get my drift.

  16. ‘Poroti,
Mazzy Star are good. As are The Cowboy Junkies. : )’

Particularly the Cowboy Junkies! Check out Notes Falling Slow.
So much great music, so little time.

  17. Steve777:

The Nationals here seem to be less ideological and prone to dumbing down their speech and thought processes than their federal counterparts. Eg Barnaby spoke way different when he was a Qld Senator to now as Member for NE.

  18. Speaking of Roy and HG, they won an Aria for their latest CD, believe it or not.
Listening to the start, it occurred to me that what a certain poster requires is Roy’s Rectal Ring Balm.
Do him the world of good I think…

  19. Bemused,
Piss off you pompous git! It’s not all about you, though you always try and make it so. But I’ll give you one example. You just inferred that I, and others, who called out Bob McBob for his offensive comments, which he, himself tonight admitted were offensive and uncalled for, were ‘bullying idiots’. If you don’t consider that a sneer at us then you are having yourself on.

To which I might add, as I’ve just noticed, your free advice to Adrian, ‘You really are totally clueless’. Now you will probably smarmily say you were just telling the truth, but Bemused, we all know your game well enough by now and just because you say it isn’t so does not make it a fact. Your just self-serving in your commentary about yourself.

So thanks for swinging by late tonight and totally ruining the settled ambience that had been created. A specialty of yours, you can’t deny.

Don’t expect any more ‘links’ from me either. I’ve made my point and a pissant like you doesn’t tell me what to do.

  20. Adrian:

There was something in the Crikey email the other day about the ABC’s shift to the right, and I’ve glimpsed today Keating saying similar things about ABC news that many of us here have been saying for years now.

Some may wish to put their hands over their ears or their heads in the sand when it comes to the dumbing down and erosion of the ABC as a public broadcaster, but fortunately that doesn’t prevent others from pointing out the bleedin’ obvious.

  21. Confessions,
The Nationals here seem to be less ideological and prone to dumbing down their speech and thought processes than their federal counterparts.

I think that’s the Hendy Cowan effect. He was a real gentleman and would never let the WA Nats lower themselves to the Beetroot’s level. He had standards and he stuck to them. Unlike Barnaby Joyce.

I have never said it is all about me and I enjoy the cut and thrust of PB.
There has been far worse than B McB but he is not one of the privileged group enjoying William’s protection and behaving as a pack when an outsider incurs displeasure.

Adrian truly is rather dimwitted when it comes to understanding media. He moaned about the fact that the capture of Prakash had taken precedence over Brandis on the evening news. Well I’ve got news for Adrian. Prakash is now old news and the media has moved on to the negative gearing issue prompted by the NSW ministers speech.

That’s how it works and no conspiracy involved so put away the tinfoil hat.

The rest is too off the planet to be bothered with.

  23. C@T:

Brendon Grylls seems an honorable person as well. I’d never classify him in the category of Joyce, Truss or that idiot who preceded Truss.

    Night!

  24. ‘Well I’ve got news for Adrian. Prakash is now old news and the media has moved on to the negative gearing issue prompted by the NSW ministers speech.’

You truly are a moron. The TERROR story was lead item on 7.30 and Brandis was not mentioned, which was all I claimed.
Now run along and take some of Roy’s Rectal Ring Balm, and you might feel better.

Giving just about everyone the shits around here seems to be your thing, but I’m getting STFU just to get rid of you!

I appreciate your personal product endorsement for Roy’s Rectal Ring Balm but I have no need for it.
In any case, it seems not to have done much for you.

  26. John Smith
    Great apology.
You are not the only person here who has crossed the line after few firewaters, so do not feel too bad.

I hope you come back some time with William’s permission. I may not agree with you always but I like to here different voices – including those facilitated by alcohol,

  27. I’ve been commenting here since 2008 or 2009 and have no recollection of a John Smith. Why are we suddenly being inundated with a John Smith apology tour when nobody knows who he is?

  28. DTT:

Was Bob McBob banned? That is good news, the commenter was an outright vituperative troll.

But this doesn’t explain the John Smith apology rounds.

  29. There are only two questions left to be answered, will Gleeson accept appointment as commissioner of the Brandis Royal Commission, and how wide will the Terms of Reference be.
