Newspoll: 51-49 to Coalition

Newspoll has opened its account for 2013 with an encouraging result for Labor, recording a primary vote six points higher than the previous poll of December 7-9.

The result of the first Newspoll for 2013 has been reported by AAP (your guess as to how that’s come about is as good as mine) and almost simultaneously by the ever-reliable James J, and it’s a relatively encouraging one for Labor who trail just 51-49 on two-party preferred, down from 54-46 in the final poll of 2012. The primary votes are 38% for Labor, up six on last time, with the Coalition and the Greens both down two, to 44% and 9% respectively. Julia Gillard is up two on approval to 38% and down three on disapproval to 49% while Tony Abbott is up one to 29% and down one to 58%. Gillard leads as preferred prime minister by 45-33, up from 43-34.

UPDATE (16/1/13): A Morgan face-to-face result covering both the previous two weekends (and presumably warranting more than the usual degree of caution on account of the holiday period) has the Coalition leading 51-49 when preferences are distributed as per the 2010 election result, and by 52-48 according to respondent allocation. The primary votes are 36.5% for Labor, 41.5% for the Coalition and 10.5% for the Greens. This follows what now looks an aberrant result in the final poll of last year, when Labor led 53.5-46.5 on previous election preferences and 52.5-47.5 on respondent-allocated.

UPDATE (19/1/13): AAP reports a ReachTEL poll of 511 respondents conducted for the United Voice union in Wayne Swan’s Brisbane seat of Lilley suggests he is heading for defeat, trailing LNP candidate Rod McGarvie 45% to 38% on the primary vote.

William – I will take Blewitt’s word over Gillard any day.’

One must accept at face value this claim by JM but it demonstrates in one line how some Australians are dragging the rest of this country down in the same way that the Tea party is dragging the USA down, as was demonstrated by the “death panels” argument regard the universal health scheme introduced by the US President.

As well it clearly shows that JM had no understanding of the world and issues he/she is talking about but despite this show of ignorance he/she is still prepared to pontificate on the issue.

This need to demonstrate ignorance, up till now has usually, but not always, been the preserve of climate skeptics who insist that black is white but this is another example of the cult of willful ignorance seeping into other issues.

Off cause these is always another explanation and that is the JM is nothing but a troll who will say anything regardless of the lack of truth it may contain.

What ever the case it demonstrates that JM rejoices in his/her ignorant or has a very tenuous nexus with the truth.

[Speaking of cricket, John Inverarity should sack himself. Fair enough to rotate fast bowlers when you have a big choice (guise of “resting” is a fail) but batsmen? Give me a break!]

Unfortunate choice of words, but yes.

That said, I’m not sure that they were giving batsmen rest. They were trying to create a larger pool of non-novice players and learn things about bsatsmen under the conditions available prior to the indian and England tours.

Note also that Haddin, who was inserted into the Adelaide team, did play well, and then got an injury when turning for a third run and could only keep for 20 overs. I’d say it was better that he suffered the injury in some meaningless one dayer than a test.

Apart from anything else, Blewitt is a self confessed fraudster, and his own sister and ex wife have gone on the public record over the past six months to state that he has been lying all his life and conning people all his life. The worst of it has come from his sister, who has spoken to police about Blewitt’s conduct when she was a young girl. What she intimated he did to her, sounds beyond appalling. The fact that the Liberals including JBishop have cavorted with him, says a lot about them indeed.

  4. Well, perhaps instead of calling me a troll etc…, you could accept that I have a different opinion to you?

Niki Savva is someone for whom I have a lot of time and respect. She’s always so fair and balanced in her articles, and makes the Insiders somewhat bearable.

I’m gobsmacked that so many PBers have been taken in by an obvious spoof …JM’s just “avin a laff” …at your expense …Lol!!

    Yes quite so.

That timeless advice – Just scroll on.

  6. fraudster, and his own sister and ex wife have gone on the public record over the past six months to state that he has been lying all his life and conning people all his life.

So Gillard was in good company, then?

  7. frednk…

I tweet every day…& you are quite right about Liberal tweeps. Whether genuine Lib supporters …or obvious trolls …they just cannot engage in meaningful debate.

The blame for this sorry state of affairs imo can be laid at the feet of the Abbott/Credlin blitzkrieg strategy of negativity/lies/smears which has dominated Aussie politics since late 2009. ‘Old Media’ are complicit as well by their determination to under-report the positive work being done by the Govt …& over-report &/or exaggerate their mistakes.

The frenzied sensationalising of obvious smear campaigns which necessarily involve vicious character assassination gives Lib supporters/trolls the ‘permission’ they want to pour out their latent bile and nastiness. So, it is no wonder Twitter is full of nasty/personally abusive types who use the anonymity of Twitter to vent their spleens in real time & without consequences.

Also, Abbott/Credlin have given them zero policies to debate …so when they’re not hurling personal insults …they can only criticize Labor’s policies. They do this by quoting such reliable sources as Bolt & Pickering (very popular) ….Hadley & Michael Smith ..the latter being the ‘final word’ on all things to do with AWU “scandal”…and of course the Telegraph/Australian.

I actually have absolutely no problem with Liberal Trolls on Twitter …easy to either ignore or block. It is pointless trying to debate them & the golden rule is: ‘Don’t feed the trolls.’ They are the price we have to pay for a truly democratic information dissemination tool like Twitter …the positive is the massive potential reach of our message via our ‘followers.’

Twitter is a very powerful New Media application which is starting to encroach on territory once dominated by Old Media …imo it will have a not inconsiderable effect on the outcome of the election …whether this is a positive for the ALP is dependent on their supporters getting involved in disseminating their message.

Spoof accounts like JM’s are very common on Twitter …& most tweeps enjoy them immensely …what we never do is take them seriously …or waste time debating them. 🙂

Jenny, you’ve told us your name and you’ve told us your age. By giving us your details you were only trying to get some sympathy from us. You’re a fraud.

  9. victoria – that you think I am a troll/taking the piss. I suppose you think that Barrie Cassidy, Fran Kelly, Karen Middleton, Laura Tingle and David Marr are unbiased, right?

  10. Victoria @# 3255

There is also the sexual behavior of this man in respect of his sister.

This should be enough to warn anyone that under no circumstances can he be trusted.

However, JM appears to accept that this sort of behavior has no impact on how one should assess what he says.

  11. J M

Anyone who thinks Piers Ackerman is logical cannot be taken seriously. That is my opinion. We live in a democracy and I am entitled to my opinion. And BTW you cant stand JGillard and Labor. Good for you because guess what, I cant stand TAbbott and the LNP. That is the beauty of our democracy. Each to his/her own point of view.

  12. Ratsars – is there any proof? And you think I should believe Gillard, after her myriad of lies? More chance of her flying to Mars and playing for the Western bulldogs than knifing Rudd, no carbon tax, no change to the health rebate, surplus… What reason/s has Gillard given me to trust her? And she was in cahoots with these man, the old adage about the company you keep rings true here.

  13. Ratsars

I mentioned this before xmas, but Jon Faine read out a transcript of Blewitt’s sister talking on Perth radio in August I believe. It was whilst JBishop was being interviewed about the matter. The sister warned JBishop off her brother then, but what did the imbecile JBishop do? Meet with him. For goodness sake!!!

  14. Anyone who thinks Piers Ackerman is logical cannot be taken seriously. That is my opinion.

Yes, it is opinion, not fact.

And you didn’t answer my question about the other journos on the Insiders.

  15. J M

What a laugh. JG was a lawyer 20 years ago and acted for this person as her client. JBishop met with him at the end of last year. Again you really are hilarious

  16. I don’t disagree that Kelly and Middleton are biased – most certianly biased to the right of politics. Cassidy and Tingle are essentially nothings these days and bend which ever way their pay packets tell them to bend. Marr is a Green. I don’t think there is one Labor person on the list.

  17. http://au.news.yahoo.com/thewest/a/-/newshome/15879621/labors-uphill-battle-for-power/

[“Labor is not making any ground at all using their cost of living mantra,” pollster Patterson Research Group said. “Our data from January 2012 showed that while voters were hurting under the cost of living increases, the clear view was that costs would have been the same under a Labor government.

“The Liberals seem to have convinced voters that the cost-of-living increases are a fact of life in a changing world, not something that was due to their economic management. In short, Labor has been backing the wrong horse.”

While the 59-41 Statewide two-party preferred result represents a crushing lead for Mr Barnett and his Government, strategists in the major parties believe that figure is skewed by the Liberals’ dominance in a number of safe seats.

Neither side is predicting as emphatic a result as the poll suggests, with Liberal sources saying their “best case scenario” is a three to five seat margin of victory on the basis that they start from a position of minority government holding 29 of 59 seats in the Parliament.

It is understood Labor internal polling of marginal seats shows a much closer contest than the Westpoll portrays, but that Labor would still lose an election held today.]

  18. No, it’s a simple question. If your side is going to continually accuse Piers of being biased, do you not admit that all of those journos are Labor biased?

  19. ”J M @# 3256
Well, perhaps instead of calling me a troll etc…, you could accept that I have a different opinion to you?”

As you lack the manners to address who you are referring to I can only guess that the above comment was aimed at me.

It would appear that you are incapable of reading what was written. Go back and re-read my earlier post.

It is not that you have a different opinion to anyone that is being addressed but the basis of that opinion. We still have amongst us people who believe the earth is flat because if it was round we would fall off the bottom. As you are making a similar statement one has to guess at the bases of you belief. You are either ignorant or you are a troll.

    What is it?

  20. I hope to see lots more of the AWU this week. Looks promising, too. Factor in the Slipper and Thomson court cases for Labor in early February – not a good look for Labor.

  21. JM

I have provided several links of several studies from several western countries showing that political journos are left leaners by about 2 to 1 but none of that matters.

PB has decided that the media has a bias to the ALP and there will be no debate on that here.

I wouldn’t get too hopeful about anyone here from the right ever conceding anything BTW.

  22. Michael Smith is like a dog with a bone on the AWU, and good on him too. Very good interview on 2GB this year. Gillard was sadly mistaken if she thought that it would just die over the new year break.
