Essential Research: 55-45 to Coalition

Bernard Keane at Crikey reports Essential Research has the Coalition’s lead unchanged on last week at 55-45, from primary votes of 34% for Labor (unchanged), 47% for the Coalition (down one to a six-month low) and 9% for the Greens (down one). The monthly personal ratings have Julia Gillard up four on approval to 35% and down three on disapproval to 54%, while Tony Abbott records his worst net rating yet with approval down four to 32% and disapproval up four to 55%. Gillard now leads 40-37 as preferred prime minister after trailing 38-36 last time. There are also the following findings on the present government’s reforms:

The introduction of a carbon price is the only major Labor reform with net voter opposition, Essential found. Only 28% of voters thought the introduction of a carbon price was good for Australia, with 51% rating it bad — indeed, 35% of voters rated it “very bad”. Otherwise, support for Labor reforms seems to split into three: highly contested reforms that have majority support, such as the mining tax (supported 49-25%); the NBN (43-28%) and the abolition of WorkChoices (42-27%); mid-tier reforms with widespread approval — paid parental leave (52-20%); stimulus spending during the GFC (54-22% – the BER program is supported 53-20%); accepting the recommendations of the Houston panel on asylum seekers (45-15%) and paid parental leave 52-20%.

Then there are the reforms with very high support: lifting the age pension (70-11%); increasing super to 12% (68-9%); lifting the tax-free threshold to $18,200 (75-4%); the NDIS (58-5%); marine reserves (controversial in some areas but with 67-8% support); dental care (77-5%) and the Gonski education reforms (54-8%).

Also canvassed are Australia’s involvement in Afghanistan and the role of unions in the wake of the HSU scandals and the CFMEU/Grocon dispute in Melbourne – matters which were also covered in a Morgan phone poll of 410 voters conducted Wednesday, results of which can be seen here and here.

  1. deflationite,
5 Gold Echidna Stars for you! 😀

Now, we need to track down those reports and letters.

If no one else has done it by the time I get back from the Orthodentist with #2 Son, I’ll have a go. I’d like to get copies of my humungously great record reviews from that time too. 🙂

  2. @trawler/3994

I disagree, LNP in the states cutting to Health and Education is naturally against women because they don’t want to see their children getting less.

So really, The LNP and Abbott are and should be in a load of trouble.

  3. For humour value, I love conspiracy theories 🙂

@thinkprogress Al-Qaeda ‘Gave up Osama Bin Laden’ to help Obama get reelected, Limbaugh claims http://thkpr.gs/Sg2YsM #icymi

“What if Ayman al-Zawahiri gave up Osama bin Laden for the express purpose of making Obama look good? Giving Obama stature, political capital?”
justification was that al-Qaeda wants to “keep him in power” because doing so “furthers the cause.”

I think Clint was acting on al-Qaeda instructions too

Yeah, I know, crazy, but you gotta laugh 🙂

  4. Latika Bourke ‏@latikambourke

Greens Senator Sarah Hanson Young does an Abbott ‘I’m leaving it there Sid,’ and walks off.

whoa – Greens leader learning an abbott trick, best not to follow bad example Sarah!

  5. The Good Grief award of the day goes to Campbell Newman who has just declared that nobody is being sacked in Queensland. Made redundant for sure but sacked ? Never.

[Queensland Premier Campbell Newman has hit back at people who describe the loss of 14,000 public sector positions as sackings, insisting not one permanent employee had been fired as a result of the budget process.]

  6. One problem with salivating over the supposed demise of Abbott – the Liberals might replace him with someone far better and that’d present a new problem for the Gillard Government.

  7. Heard an interview on RN this morning with a 17yo Afghan guy – he has already tried the boat trip to Australia twice, including once in December 2010 when almost everyone drown. Is ready and willing to try again despite the risk and knowing he would possibly end up on Nauru or Manus Island. Also said something along the lines of if he does end up there at least everything will be paid for.

The boats aren’t going to stop – what’s going to happen next???

We really need to get regional processing up and running ASAP – get a queue formed in Indonesia and hope that people will wait their turn

  8. @TLM/4009

I disagree, only person that has more popularity is Turnbull, and considering that almost everyone in LNP hates (apparently) Turnbull, he not getting the job again.

  9. Victoria

Thanks. I must admit I’m quite on edge about this weekend’s polling, with both Newspoll and Nielsen out there. I’m having mad fantasies about 50-50 due to immense anger building up in Qld. NSW surely will be hurting too.

People are starting to remember why they voted in Labor governments and what Labor stands for. They had it good for so long they forgot what the opposite side of politics is all about.

I think Dennis Atkins is on the mark in his article. The sad circumstances for Julia and political circumstances around it will give people pause for breath after the non-stop hysteria generated by the Opposition and the MSM since the last election.

Perhaps the public will use this fresh air to reassess our PM’s character and standing.

    I hope so.

  10. MsAdventure, no not going to the dinner tonight. But I will be there Sunday. I was advised by mail during the week that the PM will be addressing the Conference at 10 am on Sunday.

  11. Poroti @ 4008

Perhaps I should show Mr Newman the letter my wife received from her department where it states her contract will not be renewed.

Temporary Contracts are a great way for the Government to get rid of staff without ‘sacking’ them.

Others in her department are taking up voluntary redundancy simply because they are given no other option. If they don’t take it now they get the chop later, their positions are all gone.

  12. Evan, the Labor Party have already defeated Malcolm Turnbull once, they can do it again.

Besides, he can’t even defeat the NBN, let alone the whole Labor government.

Other than him, who else would you seriously suggest?

  13. “@GrahamPerrettMP: @JoeHockey You voted 4 the super-trawler! You voted 4 the super-trawler! You voted 4 the super-trawler! You voted 4 the super-trawler!”

  14. Outside the bubble of Poll Bludger, I wonder how many ordinary voters really care about what Tony Abbott might or might not have done at Sydney Uni 35 years ago?
    Just an observation.

  15. B
It didn’t happen? He forgot? It isn’t important because I lied about it as long as 17 minutes ago? He didn’t punch him, so what is the problem?

  16. If Abbott is so on the nose, as you all claim, surely it’s in Labor’s interests to keep him as leader until the next election?

  17. [Outside the bubble of Poll Bludger, I wonder how many ordinary voters really care about what Tony Abbott might or might not have done at Sydney Uni 35 years ago?
    Just an observation.]

I am sure the voters in his party room care.

There will be a % of Lib leaning women who will change their vote over this, I am sure. It may go to the Greens. Then again, it may go to Gillard.

Latham’s vote tanked after the cabbie stuff and the handshake.

  18. TLM

You are in danger of sounding like a Liberal supporter again. Watch news reports tonight and the Project and see how much they care.

  19. David McRae

[What if Ayman al-Zawahiri gave up Osama bin Laden for the express purpose of making Obama look good?]
Unfortunately for that notion al-Zawahiri put out a rare video a couple of days ago and amongst other things called for revenge for the killing of his deputy al-Libi ( A Libyan) . I don’t think the death of the US ambassador a couple of days later in Libya was a coincidence.

  20. TLM@4025,

Outside the bubble of Poll Bludger, I wonder how many ordinary voters really care about what Tony Abbott might or might not have done at Sydney Uni 35 years ago?

They cared about what Mark Latham did to cabbies.

    They care.

They’re not all brainwashed bimbos and bogans you know.

  21. TLM

Around about 70% of Australians already know that Mr Abbott is a rotten apple, a thug and a liar and poll accordingly. These are people who are mostly outside the PB ‘bubble’, BTW.

The remaining 30% who are satisfied with having a Coalition LOTO who is a thug and a liar may become dissatisifed with the state of affairs as well.

It is a pleasant state of affairs that Mr Abbott is less likely to be around come the next election than Ms Gillard.

  22. Not defending Tony Abbott, but I doubt this is the smoking gun that you all think it is.
It’ll impact the Liberal vote as minimally as the Slater/Gordon thing did for Labor earlier on.

  23. TLM
[Julia Gillard vs Malcolm Turnball would be a whole new ball game.]

It certainly would be, with the likes of Bernardi, Abbott and others undermining him on a carbon price and whatever else they can come up with. It would be guaranteed disunity on their side.

  24. Joe Hockey ‏@JoeHockey

Dutch gvmt raised concerns about 11th hr ban on supertrawler with the EU. The ban is another example of sovereign risk damaging Aus economy.

    PuffTheMagicDragon ‏@PuffyTMD

@JoeHockey are you uneducated? “Sovereign risk is the risk of a government becoming unwilling or unable to meet its loan obligations…1/2

@JoeHockey …or reneging on loans it guarantee” Stop misusing term SR to scare. Or do you really not know what it means, Shadow Treas? 2/2

    @JoeHockey http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Credit_risk

@JoeHockey Are you saying Australia is going to default on its debt because a trawler can’t fish here?

@JoeHockey I didn’t know Au in danger of defaulting on its debt. Thanks for heads up. 🙂 Overseas investors & coys will be grateful for news

    Waiting for an answer.

  25. TLM – agree with you re caring about what happened 30 + years ago, it doesn’t matter to me and shouldn’t matter to most. The issue is how he is handling it now

Not sure he’ll go anywhere though – the cupboard is bare. Turnbull would be the obvious choice from those on the outside looking in but it would tear the party apart. Hockey gets a mention now and then but once again, not popular with many in the party. Who else is there???

  26. The people who intensely hate Tony Abbott will still hate him.
He’s already got a problem with women, won’t change that either.
Will it make male voters over the age of 40 suddenly love Julia Gillard? Remains to be seen.

Which is why his most weaselly of weasel word are so galling.
