ACNielsen: 56-44

Tasmanian reader Blackbird informs us that according to the ABC news (which goes to air earlier in Tasmania because daylight saving has already begun there), tomorrow’s ACNielsen poll will show Labor with a two-party lead of 56-44, down from 57-43 last month. More details to follow.

UPDATE: Labor’s primary vote is down two points from last month to 47 per cent, while the Coalition is up one to 40 per cent. There were further attitudinal questions which you can read all about at The Age and the Sydney Morning Herald.

  1. Re Cossie’s meeting with THAT Pastor.

[TREASURER Peter Costello has defended his support of an evangelical church leader who was acquitted of religious vilification, saying the pastor had got a “rough deal”.

Mr Costello said he met with Catch the Fire Ministries leader Danny Nalliah in August, because he had taken “great interest” in the religious vilification case between the leader and the Islamic Council of Victoria.

“I’ve spoken with him on a number of occasions because I reckon he got a pretty bad deal when he was prosecuted under the Victorian vilification legislation,” Mr Costello told ABC radio.

“He was found to have contravened the act but when he appealed, the court of appeal said he hadn’t contravened the act at all.

“I thought he got a pretty rough deal, frankly.”

The Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT) in 2005 ruled that two Catch the Fire pastors, Mr Nalliah and Daniel Scot, had vilified Muslims under the state’s 2002 Racial and Religious Tolerance Act.

However, the Victorian Court of Appeal later quashed the verdict.

The row was sparked in 2002 when Catch The Fire claimed in a newsletter that Muslims were demons training to make Australia an Islamic state, that the Koran promoted violence and killing, and that Muslims derived money from drugs.

The five-year battle finally ended this year with mediation between the two groups.]

  2. [Unfortunately, I don’t think there’s a lot you can do about those blue ribbon Lib seats, ShowsOn. I live in Mayo and I’ve pretty much given up hope, ]

I lived in Mayo for the 1998 election (voted Democrat to try and elect Schuman, Labor ran dead hoping Schuman would win), but since 2001 have been redistributed into Sturt.

  3. [When’s the next poll out? I think I’ve become a junkie!]

Newspoll tomorrow. Watch Lateline tonight, they normally have the figures as part of their first story.

  4. Like many younger Liberal MPs, Pyne never had a real job of any kind before being an MP. He became a research assistant to Vanstone aged 20 (ie a taxpayer-funded Young Lib organiser) and was elected for Sturt aged 26.

  5. “Whatever you think of someone’s religious view, I don’t think we will improve our society by sending people out to collect evidence on preachers,” he said. ” – Peter Costello

Why is it OK to criticise what muslims say during sermons, but not Christians?

This is an example of the rank hipocrisy of religious conservatives in our country. Christian fundamentalist wackos can say whatever they like about anyone, but muslim fundamentalist wackos can’t without appearing on every news bulletin in the country?

I’m not saying one is better than the other. I’m proposing that ALL religious fundamentalist wackos should be ridiculed and made fun of for their archaic beliefs.

Surely it’s not Newspoll time again? We had one last week.]

Oh crap, my bad. This waiting is just forcing weeks to meld together.

  7. lovely extended showing of a conversation between John Howard and a nurse at the North West Hospital in Tasmania on the 7:30 report. Howard asked what he would do to fix the health system. He responded that he would’nt have ‘saved’ the mersey and believes the Tasmanian governments statewide Health reform plan is good for the state. This reflects most of the sentiment within the states medical community. Howard is wasting his time down here. I would not be confident in predicting a nationwide result yet but i am certain that Labor will win a clean sweep in Tasmania.

  8. Adam says #430
” illud horribile, inter christianos non nominandum”

The devil he is!! Thats’s what he gets for having a gerundive in his name!

  9. Westie 422 – If the yanks attack Iran and Howard joins in – he would be belted to the boundary by the electorate.

  10. Turns out Ben Quin was a member of the Tasmanian Greens, he was on 7:30. Not very interesting actually, Dick Adams, the labor member for Lyons, will recieve a minimum swing towards him of 5%.

  11. It looks like ESJ is fast becoming the new “Glen” on this website. Like Glen just keeps coming up with the most outrageously hilarious statements – such as listing Amanda Vanstone as a good minister!

Next thing you know ESJ will be saying that Howard will kick off the election campaign next weekend by walking across Bass Strait. Of course Howard will be greeted enthusiastically on the beaches as a messiah by Tassie voters and on the night deliver all five of the electorates there to the Coalition!

  12. “Why is it OK to criticise what muslims say during sermons, but not Christians?”

Um, perhaps because Christians don’t go out and commit acts of mass murder under the inspiration of said sermons? Just a guess.

  13. Excepting George “Monkey Boy” Bush… of course… but apart from him… no, in general terms, christians don’t tend to do these things… but when they do… boy, do they ever!

  14. Regarding Howard delaying the election, I don’t think that the media will savage him if parliament is recalled next week. They have been pretty soft on him up to this point regarding the election date and besides, parliamentary sessions usually provide quick and easy news stories.

If the media is to genuinely turn against Howard, it will only be AFTER the taxpayer-funded advertising stops. Right now, they are absolutely raking the money in and don’t really want to upset Howard while he calls the shots on who gets to have the most cash.

I suspect that this is part of the reason why Howard is delaying, along with a host of other reasons. In other words, the longer he delays, the longer he can effectively give away vast sums of taxpayers money to the media and therefore ensure that the media stay onside.

  15. I get really pissed off at otherwise sensible people who try to pretend that Islamist terrorism doesn’t exist, or is all a plot to persecute Muslims, or who play this childish “George Bush is just as bad” game. This is just puerile politics, and really insulting to the Australians who were killed in Bali and elsewhere by these people. Grow up, John and others.

  16. I get really p*ssed off at otherwise sensible people who try to pretend that Isl*mist t*rrorism doesn’t exist, or is all a plot to persecute M*slims, or who play this childish “George Bush is just as bad” game. This is just puerile politics, and really insulting to the Australians who were killed in Bali and elsewhere by these people. Grow up, John and others.

  17. [ the acts of the few require the surveillance of the many ]

    Adam,

I wonder if you’d be so eager to believe that logic if it was applied to other minorities like say the gay community?

  18. perhaps because Christians don’t go out and commit acts of mass murder under the inspiration of said sermons

Sure, if you don’t count the Rev Jim Jones (the original Jonestown), the Branch Davidians in Waco or the Shankill Butchers in Belfast. But let’s not allow facts to get in the road of a good generalisation.

  19. Am I the only one here who switches off when the topic of Mus*im* versus Chr*sti*n* comes up? Surely there is a blog ELSEWHERE dedicated to such tripe.

  20. [Um, perhaps because Christians don’t go out and commit acts of mass murder under the inspiration of said sermons? Just a guess.]

What about all the Christian conservatives in the U.S. who can’t wait for nuclear war because that would supposedly be a sign of Christ’s third coming? How is that not supporting mass murder?

There are Christian fundamentalists in the U.S. who support Zionism simply because it (supposedly) puts in place what is needed for Christ to return, so he can then convert all Jews to Christianity. This is a wacky idea, but does nothing towards resolving conflict in the middle east.

Oh, and then there’s Christian conservatives in the U.S. blaming September 11 on homosexuals and feminists. Again, I can’t see how that creates a tolerant society.

  21. Pleeeze no, not another Muslims vs. Christians debate. I will spontaneously combust.
Did anyone else note the ‘dug in’ behaviour of Howard today? Wouldn’t answer questions on the pulp mill at his press conference. Clearly annoyed about questions about the election date. I suspect that he will drag everyone back for another sitting of parliament, though perhaps he risks some of his own unable to resist the temptation to throttle him.
gusface, what on earth are you predicting?

  22. paul k, another incredibly stupid comment. If gay activists had committed 9/11 and Bali, yes of course that would be justified. But we didn’t. So don’t play these stupid games with me.

  23. Oh, dear. Adam you have made the silly mistake of not making the distinction between the actions of SOME Muslim fundamentalists and Muslims in general. Reading your views on other topics, I would have thought you would be above such sweeping generalisations. This is very ESJ of you.

  24. [ don’t play these stupid games with me. ]

I could say the same about you. I’ll stop as long as you do. Your prejudice is evident from previous posts.

William will probably delete these comments anyway.

  25. OK, ok, I won’t respond further to these asinine remarks. Except to say that if anyone thinks that a Labor government will be any less zealous in enforcing the anti-terrorism laws than Howard has been, they are mistaken.

  26. Every time they identify these terrorists with ‘Muslim’ they help them justify their actions and their ’cause’ and help promote it to others who identify with it.

If the media had from the begining simply ignored the Muslim tag and just called all such activities terrorism and terrorists, murderers etc without advertising the cause to other fanatical loonies on the edge looking for an avenue to express their hate. Call them envy murderers or anything that belittled the act and the activists…but don’t give them the free advertising. They live by having a black and white dividing line.

    Anyway….that is for another forum.

  27. …even if militantant homosexuals had have committed 911 or Bali – I wouldn’t have thought persecution of all homosexuals would be an appropriate response. And yes, I regard intrusive levels of monitoring (by the few or the many) as persecution.

  28. Harry Snapper Organs, I agree, let’s avoid a muslim vs. christian debate. It’s just silly. I sent a reply on this, awaiting moderation – but no more – delete it if you like, William.

I think Howard will recall parliament, for the reasons I stated above. He is dragging this out as long as possible in order to keep the media on side as much as possible. He knows that if the media start to turn against him, then there is no way of recovering. I also think that he is very worried about the state of Bennelong and wants to sure up the vote there a little more before he gets dragged away during the campaign proper.

  29. So far spotted on 10 and SBS news (missed the ABC news):

Howard, when asked by a journalist if parliament would resume next week shot back in a very arrogant manner: “It’s scheduled to resume next week”. Asked again, he cut short the question from the journalist before replying: “It’s scheduled to resume next week”.

    Not a good look.

John Howard: arrogant, out of touch and soon to be out of office.

  30. Thanks Adam.

Another question sorry. I’m trying to get a feel for where all this will go after the election.

After this election I think it will be a safe bet that people will realize the liberals have abandoned the Liberal party. I can only see three short term outcomes.

    1) The liberals will reclaim their party, I can’t see it happening, it needs numbers and most of them have walked. Unfortunately the extreme right are like any extreme group, there is only one true way. I can’t see them exiting stage right when it becomes obvious they have made a complete hash of it. It short I think the Liberals are going to suffer under the extreme right as labor did under the extreme left for 50 years.

    2) The Democrats recover.

    3) First they vote for labor and then the politically active join.

What is your view on option three.

The Liberal party was formed after the United Australia Party disintegrated after suffering a heavy defeat in the 1943 election, I am wonder if we are seeing the end of the Liberal party in a similar fashion, nothing lasts forever.

My own view is the difference between now and 1943 is labor has completely claimed the middle turf and have their extreme grouping under control.

  31. Ask any media proprietor their preferred election date, and they’ll tell you: As late as possible. Let’s face it, they are all gorging themselves on this rich stream of Government proganda, and want it to last.

However the acts of the few require the surveillance of the many.

Some people say the same about homosexuals, Lesbians, Asians etc. What a great world we live in. What did happen to those so called terrorists that where arrested in Vic and NSW? Didn’t it come out that they where innocent ? Should i watch everyone that is not like me? makes for a sad life!

  33. It’s not a “religion debate” – I’m an atheist and I dislike all religions equally. It’s a debate about the correct response to terrorism. Some people seem to be totally divorced from reality on these issues. Fortunately those who make Labor policy on this matter are not. But out of respect for you, Mr Speaker, I will not pursue the matter further. 🙂
