The Australian reports the latest Newspoll has Labor down a point on three weeks ago to 29%, its weakest result since the government came to power; the Coalition down a point to 18%, a point higher than its record low in late June; One Nation down a point to 29%; and the Greens up two to 14%. The most substantial change in the poll is an improvement in Angus Taylor’s personal ratings, his approval up four to 34% and disapproval down five to 46%. Only net ratings are provided for Anthony Albanese, who is down from minus 18 to minus 22, and Pauline Hanson, who is down from neutral to minus three. Albanese’s lead over Taylor on preferred prime minister narrows from 44-36 to 44-37, while a three-way question has Anthony Albanese steady on 46%, Pauline Hanson down one to 31% and Angus Taylor up one to 23%. The report also says that some manner of head-to-head result has Albanese leading Hanson 56-44. The poll was conducted Monday to Friday from a sample of 1242.

Memories are conveniently short when it comes to being a Fan Of Politics.
Melongate is arguably innocuous – though having watched the video, it’s less arguable – but it’s from the same GD interview as shaggin’ Kylie. Given the tone of the rest of the interview, it’s a tough sell that the PM’s tongue was firmly not in his cheek.
What it does do, though, is add another data point to an apparent pattern of behaviour from the PM.
Albanese is wont to put his foot in his mouth: saying or doing something that could reasonably be expected to offend some women, or be interpreted as sexist or dismissive.
When called out for that behaviour, the PM and his ministers typically refute the interpretation that led to the offence rather than acknowledging why it could reasonably have been perceived that way.
Even where there is eventually an apology (rare), there is often little indication that Albanese has reflected on the underlying criticism.
Then a similar controversy subsequently occurs.
Four examples immediately come to mind:
– 2024 Women’s rally against violence
– 2026 Grace Tame is a “difficult” woman
– 2026 Shaggin’ Kylie
– 2026 Japanese melons
You can argue about the seriousness of each individual incident, but as BW might say… “connect the dots”

Red bins are already collected weekly in Victoria. They certainly are where I live. Though waste collection is done by councils not state Governments.
Note: Checking on the internet there does seem to be some Victorian councils that collect red bins fortnightly, though not mine.

My council is only 3 bin so the green bin is only garden waste. It is planning to change to 4 bin system in 2027-28. In which smelly food waste would then not go in the red bin but the lime green one.

Firstly I would just like to say that the melon issue is not in my top 100 concerns atm. Just my disclaimer. So, here I go.
Commentators and others getting into Albanese over his comments on a podcast that apparently insulted the Japanese PM are all gung Ho about how the said PM must be very very upset and offended and are demanding Albanese apologise.
Has the Japanese PM taken offence ? Is she offended ? Has there been any blow back in Japan from the government or media in response to the claimed insults ?
There seems to be a huge amount of assumption going on here in Australia regarding this issue. Is it possible that the Japanese PM and her government are just moving on and concentrating on the progress Australia and Japan have made in trade, energy and security in these troubling times.
I have no idea what is actually happening behind the scenes, if anything, but neither do any commentators in Australia I would think.
The views of one jilted ex ambassador does not a crisis make. His opinion is just his opinion.
Anyway, just some random thoughts and I will now go back to concentrating on the really important issues in my life like deciding what I will have for dinner tonight.

There has been a trial on nearby for red bin collection only every two weeks, alternating with recycling. Green organics weekly. This saves Council money as it costs them to send the red bin contents to landfill – green bin collection is much cheaper as it goes to companies that make it into something they can sell.
Some people have gone spare over it. I think a trans person must have stuck a Welcome to Country sticker up their green bin….. or something.
The answer is to charge per red bin collection. You use it, you pay for it. I can hear the screaming now.
