Morgan: 53.5-46.5 to Labor (open thread)

Yet another poll result pointing to a stampede from the Coalition to One Nation.

Roy Morgan has published a weekly result for the second week in a row, perhaps suggesting a return to old form after its post-election practice of combining its regular surveying into large-sample monthly results. The latest result has Labor down one-and-a-half points on last week to 28.5% and the Coalition down fully six-and-a-half points to 24%, with a six-point increase pushing One Nation to 21% and bringing the pollster closer into line with its rivals. The Greens are steady on 13.5%. Labor leads 53.5-46.5 on respondent allocated preferences and 53-47 when preference flows from the last election are applied, in both cases out from 52-48 last week. The poll was conducted Monday to Sunday from a sample of 1715 – the full release has two-party preferred breakdowns by state, gender and age cohort, which unfortunately does not extend to primary votes as the monthly aggregations were doing.

The Daily Mail reports a Freshwater Strategy poll of 1050 respondents has Labor on 33% of the primary vote, the Coalition on 28%, the Greens on 11% and One Nation on 19%, with Labor leading 53-47 on two-party preferred. Pauline Hanson records a plus six net approval rating, with Anthony Albanese on minus nine and Sussan Ley on minus five, and Albanese leading Ley 45-32 on preferred prime minister. “About 75%” supported “a temporary cap on migration while housing and infrastructure catches up, while 81% backed stricter character tests and background checks for visa applicants”. We may see full details of the poll reported on the company’s site at a later time.

  1. I have heard that ON was on an uptick but I’ve been too preoccupied with stupid shit to really pay attention.

I’m calling my therapist first thing tomorrow.

  2. I just saw a possum drinking out of my cat’s water bowl (the one the outside deck, not the inside one). I must be sure to keep it topped up, now I know it’s helping local wildlife in the heat.

(I just thought everyone could use a feelgood story about now.)

  3. ‘Opposition Leader Sussan Ley’s leadership challengers are set to meet on Wednesday ahead of a potential spill at next Tuesday’s Liberal party room meeting.’

Taylor & Hastie should both stand, thereby splitting the vote of the right, allowing Ley to come through the centre.

    Damn Alcaraz

Possums have survived without cat water bowls for millions of years. You are interfering with evolution!

Climate Change and Global Heating weren’t as bad back then. Would you like to be deprived of water in this weather?

  6. Yeah I’m still on the horse that says ON vote will drop once the Libs put a man into the top job.

Also Tasmania deserves the parliamentary numbers it has, its not some Jonny come lately territory like the ACT.

  7. My own view is it’s too early to start “looking for good news”.

What’s going on is a cannibalisation of the mainstream right vote, being parked with the feral right, mostly because the Liberals and National are seen as useless. There’s no real evidence of an actual similar structural shift from Labor to One Nation.

The clearest sign is the the 2pp results we’re getting – ONP plus the band of Misfits formerly known as The Coalition are basically maxing out their votes between themselves. ONP also has the issue of preference flows in the cities likely to be much worse than in regional areas. Basically, if you’re not voting LNP (band of misfits) or ONP (feral, no-nothing Ponzi scheme) first or second preference … you kind of hate their guts.

And yes, my expectation is, once Ley is removed, the Coalition will reunite and I expect the ONP numbers will start to slide – maybe not to where they belong, but lower. If, however, the Liberals don’t sort their shit out, this could become entrenched.

  8. Though Oppo research is starting to come out:

One Nation leader Pauline Hanson has failed to declare director roles or shareholdings in three companies, including one tied to her upcoming satirical film, A Super Progressive Movie.

The companies are run or co-owned by party official Alexander Jones, who pleaded guilty to a $24,000 attempted electoral fraud in 2023. Two involve James Ashby, her chief of staff.

  9. jt1983,
That’s a fair assessment of what the future holds. Plus no one has even considered tactical voting of former Liberal voters parking their vote with Labor to keep ON out if they know the Liberals are still a lost cause. Also, surely there are committed voters for The Nationals? They keep saying that they held all their seats in ’25. Not all of those voters will go over to Pauline and Bananababy.

  10. You can’t be confident of a blip (but I do think the scale of ONP support currently is), but certainly no grounds for overt confidence the other way.

    Be alert, but not alarmed.

  11. The Liberals will deal with One Nation the way John Howard did – steal their clothes. Expect an even more Right-Wing “Liberal” Party pushing big cuts in immigration plus a lot of culture war stuff and pretty much dropping any pretence of wanting to act on climate change – “We’re just like One Nation, only not crazy”. The old media and Money will be right behind them.

The big parties haven’t started tearing One Nation down yet. Patience is a virtue

    ___________________________

Very true, the Liberals have an excellent record attacking their opponents when they are going after the seats or voters the Liberals think they are entitled too. Kooyong and the rest of the teals comes to mind.

Now fighting a war on 3 fronts with the teals to the left, ON and the Nats to the right and all the time trying to attract ALP voters – whoever gets the Liberals campaign director’s job for the next election will need to take inspiration from the Generals in charge of defence of Berlin in April 1945

  13. A few lib moderates may have finally found a voice, but I think ON + the dregs of the Nats and the Lib rump would form a coalition if they had the numbers after an election. I don’t think they are likely to have the numbers though. Australia is not like the US demographically, there’s not enough Anglo low education and rural/regional seats, you need a decent tally of metropolitan seats to win. And with that array of loons preference leakage will be a real thing.

The last thing we need are billions of mendicant possums dependent upon us for their water.

The last thing we need is a combination of a Liberal leadership hopeful and the 2IC and head boy from ON making decisions for those dependant on the MDB for a living while providing enough water for the resident wildlife along the MDB.

  16. It looks like One Nation’s Housing and Immigration policies will work to make the value of your house go down:

One Nation’s housing policy is closely linked to its stance on immigration, blaming arrivals for a population surge that has created an affordability crunch.

“There’s a direct correlation between housing and excessive immigration,” Barnaby Joyce, One Nation’s recent recruit, told this masthead.

“Excess immigration is when you bring in more people than you have the capacity to absorb.

“If you’re going to bring in the population, or in excess of the population, as we have been, not this year, but in previous years, of Canberra each year, then you better have built the houses of Canberra each year.”

This claim is widely repeated but was shot down by independent economist Saul Eslake, who said the broader One Nation platform didn’t have “anything approaching a coherent economic policy”.

He said Australian politics was fundamentally supportive of price growth, so even if the borders are shut, as they were for many months during the COVID pandemic, measures were introduced to avoid prices collapsing.

  18. Hi William

Just checking Roy Morgan says their 2PP for this poll in 56.5 -43.5. If preferences were as per the last election they say 54.5 – 44.5.

Witch calling diatribes are the domain of the Left. They would think there’s a fourth witch, the “Witch of Ipswich”. But we know that just because two words rhyme doesn’t mean the allusion is appropriate. In fact, it’s bordering on blasphemous, given that the victim of that diatribe is the closest thing to a messiah for mainstream Australia.

    See another BS from LL

  20. I would warn that for most One Nation voters, shutting borders while achieving positive house prices growth is like the ideal outcome.

Yes it is, but no it won’t work that way.

However, I guess I can see one way it might work. If they close the borders to construction workers from o/s, then those that remain will produce fewer houses and charge more to build them and so the price to sell them will be higher. But then, who will be able to afford them?

  21. Evening all.

Thanks to Anonymous Lurker’s post of the new Morgan poll.

“Roy Morgan just dropped a new poll.

    ALP: 30.5% (+2%)
    LIB: 20% (-2%)
    NAT: 2.5% (+0.5%)
    ON: 22.5% (+1.5%)
    GRN: 13.0% (-0.5%)

Roy Morgan has One Nation ahead of the Liberals.

    ALP – LIB 2PP: 56.5% – 43.5% (ALP +3%)

    With 2025 election preferences, the ALP-LIB 2PP is 54.5% – 45.5% (up 1.5% for the ALP)”

So after the Nationals dummy spit to get their own position, the poll now shows that they have fewer supporters than Informal. Farcical. IMO their days are numbered as a political party.

After a miserable month of racially divisive attacks, the 2PP is almost back to where it started.

  25. Great to see those couple of polls, thankyou. I’m a bit dismayed about this rise in ON support. I find it both horrifying and mindboggling at the same time. This is a party with a figurehead who praised Putin shortly after MH17 was shot down by a Russian missile, killing 27 Aussies, including many children. Didn’t she also suggest that the Port Arthur massacre was a government conspiracy? Like I said….. mindboggling.

    https://www.theguardian.com/australia-news/2026/jan/28/guardian-essential-poll-one-nation-coalition-liberal-national-labor-anthony-albanese-bondi-attack-ntwnfb

“Labor’s primary vote was recorded at 31% – a three-point drop from last month’s 34% and the 34.6% it recorded at the May election. The Liberal-National Coalition primary vote was 25%, and Pauline Hanson’s One Nation recorded 22%. The Greens polled 9%.”

“Despite plummeting personal approval ratings for the two major party leaders, Australians strongly backed the package of laws in response to the Bondi shooting.”

“Of those polled, 73% backed banning public display of terrorist symbols, 63% approved of stronger gun laws, 62% backed more police powers to curb protests, and 60% backed new laws on hate speech. A commonwealth royal commission into antisemitism was supported by 56% of people.”

  27. It looks like the Nats’ line that, The Farmer Wants A Gun, or 10, didn’t resonate with the rest of the community.

Also, as there’s no Liberal-Nationals Coalition any more the value of the Essential poll for them is moot. I want to see Liberal support and Nationals support reported separately, so that the Nationals can see how paltry their support is! 🙂

The split means the Nationals will lose staff and resources and take a pay cut as they are no longer part of the official opposition, although Littleproud plans to appeal to the prime minister to keep up his party’s funds.

Mark Carney Rejects Suggestions That He Walked Back His Davos Speech to Trump

Prime Minister Mark Carney of Canada dismissed Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent’s suggestion that he had retracted his assertion that President Trump had created an irrevocable “rupture” to the world order.

The Canadian leader spoke to reporters in Ottawa on Tuesday, the day after Mr. Bessent said on Fox News that he was in the Oval Office while Mr. Carney “was very aggressively walking back some of the unfortunate remarks” he had made at the World Economic Forum in Davos during a telephone call with Mr. Trump.

In that speech, Mr. Carney, though he did not specifically name Mr. Trump was clear in his intent, calling on the world’s middle powers to stop accommodating the United States just “to go along to get along,” and to instead band together to counter its political and economic power.

Asked on Tuesday if he had rescinded any of his remarks while speaking with Mr. Trump, Mr. Carney said “No.”
“To be absolutely clear, and I said this to the president, I meant what I said in Davos,” Mr. Carney told reporters, referring to the Swiss ski resort town where the gathering of billionaires, investors, executives and politicians was held last week.
