Morgan: 53.5-46.5 to Labor (open thread)

Yet another poll result pointing to a stampede from the Coalition to One Nation.

Roy Morgan has published a weekly result for the second week in a row, perhaps suggesting a return to old form after its post-election practice of combining its regular surveying into large-sample monthly results. The latest result has Labor down one-and-a-half points on last week to 28.5% and the Coalition down fully six-and-a-half points to 24%, with a six-point increase pushing One Nation to 21% and bringing the pollster closer into line with its rivals. The Greens are steady on 13.5%. Labor leads 53.5-46.5 on respondent allocated preferences and 53-47 when preference flows from the last election are applied, in both cases out from 52-48 last week. The poll was conducted Monday to Sunday from a sample of 1715 – the full release has two-party preferred breakdowns by state, gender and age cohort, which unfortunately does not extend to primary votes as the monthly aggregations were doing.

The Daily Mail reports a Freshwater Strategy poll of 1050 respondents has Labor on 33% of the primary vote, the Coalition on 28%, the Greens on 11% and One Nation on 19%, with Labor leading 53-47 on two-party preferred. Pauline Hanson records a plus six net approval rating, with Anthony Albanese on minus nine and Sussan Ley on minus five, and Albanese leading Ley 45-32 on preferred prime minister. “About 75%” supported “a temporary cap on migration while housing and infrastructure catches up, while 81% backed stricter character tests and background checks for visa applicants”. We may see full details of the poll reported on the company’s site at a later time.

Trump btw has been taking the piss on Greenland as he loves showing up the weakness of Europe who is woke and failing.Gave it to them at Davos.

Trump has done a Tacko on Greenland, force and tariffs are off the table.
Always thought it would end this way, it was all done to get Epstein of the front page.
pp you really are backing a clown car.

  2. The National Party has power and influence way out of proportion to its support. I have never understood why the Liberals repeatedly wave the white flag to end most disputes with them.

In the 2025 election, admittedly probably a low point, the Nationals received just 3.8% of the vote. In many democracies which use proportional representation with a threshold of 4 or 5%, they wouldn’t achieve representation.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2025_Australian_federal_election#Results

If we regard the Country Liberal Party of the NT as Nationals, the level of support becomes 4.03%, still very small. Using this number, the Nationals’ level of support at the last election was less than one third that of the Greens and about 63% that of One Nation. However, because the National’s support base is geographically concentrated, in our system of single-member electorates, they are greatly over-represented. Even so, the Liberals should the call their bluff much more often than they do.

Whilst, to sing along with Steve Coogan, Everybody is a CV#t sometimes, PP manages to be one all the time.

  4. Ex AFL Crows Captain running in Dunstan with Fair Go party.

I have compared AI’s definition of the Australian saying A Fair Go with the policy framework of Fair Go For Australians. They dont seem to match very well.

  5. pied piper you actually made me laugh, but not in the usual way.

“Anthony Albanese put her in this process”
The process of introducing laws that Ley and the LNP have been screaming to introduce for a month? That devious Albo, getting shit on the media for weeks, Penny deliberately refusing to cry on command so that Ley could viciously attack Wong in the media.. all to ensure that Susssssssan Ley would vote for the legislation without bothering to ask the Nationals what they should do, leading the Nationals to vote against it, causing Ley to have to sack three of them, causing the Nationals to break up the Coalition again.

Albo showing himself as a political genius unmatched in Australian history.

  6. @Steve777

The Nats get that 3.8% from NSW, Vic, WA, SA

If we had a national proportional representation with a 4 or 5% threshold, the Qld Liberal National Party and NT Country Liberal Party wouldn’t exist. The Nats would also run in Tasmania and the ACT. They would easily reach 5% in past elections

  7. Understandable, IMO.

You’d know better than me – but eyewitness reports during heightened stress like that can be dubious.

4 minutes after last gunman was felled would have still been a nightmare scenario and full of uncertainty and risk. It was an instinctual yet still brave thing to do. Kudos to her C@t. It is allowed.

  8. I’m thinking Head of NATO Mark Rutte sat Trump down after his speech and explained that Europe was about to annihilate the US stock market, but that if Trump backs off, NATO could do some military stuff in Greenland to save face.
    You know it makes sense.

  9. There was talk about Price yesterday.

    From the SMH live blog:

“Yesterday evening, I was intending to vote NO to the government’s Combatting Antisemitism, Hate and Extremism Bill 2026,” Price said in a Facebook post yesterday.

“I was waiting in the alcove outside the Senate chamber for the call on the final vote on the legislation, but there was an issue with the system upon which we rely. I was deeply disappointed to miss the opportunity to vote against the bill. It was a miserable end to two days of dealing with Labor’s rushed and reckless legislation.”

Logically that would suggest that Price was waiting by herself. Does she have any friends left?

  10. Sounds to me like Mark Rutte’s past success in Trump whispering has struck again and he’s got the demented toddler to walk away from threats to use force believing that he’s actually got some kind of deal he can’t even express other than it is “infinite”. Sure Don. Come and play with your infinite blocks in the corner.

  11. ABC: David Littleproud says he informed Sussan Ley this morning that the Nationals were leaving the Coalition. “It’s done. I spoke to Sussan Ley about half an hour ago and made her fully aware,” he says.
The Nationals leader says he gave her a chance to stop this by reinstating the trio of senators dumped from the frontbench after they crossed the floor to vote against the government’s hate laws.
“I rang her about 30 minutes ago and told her that the party room’s decision was final, that unless those three were reinstated immediately, then she

    had

forced the Coalition into an untenable position,” he said. He said it was too late now for Ley to reinstate them. “The reality is that we will move on and we will get on with the job,” Littleproud said.

  12. The Coalition has formally split:

(8:49 AM) Nationals Leader David Littleproud has formally announced that the Coalition has split, saying he discussed the matter with Opposition Leader Sussan Ley half an hour ago.

“I rang her about half an hour ago and told her that the party room’s decision was final, that unless those three

    senators

were reinstated immediately, then she had forced the Coalition into an untenable position,” he said.

  13. Coalition is a Noalition once again.

Unconfirmed reports are Littleproud was singing Taylor Swift’s “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together”.. although the lyrics were changed to add “maybe if Ley gets replaced we can get back together”.

  14. What happens to the Liberal Nationals in Queensland?
The Liberal Nationals will split in Qld and run against each other so 4 way Lib/Nat/PHON/ALP??

  15. They are scum:

“ Ley releases statement after Littleproud reveals Coalition split
    By Nick Newling
Opposition Leader Sussan Ley urged Nationals Leader David Littleproud to not do any media appearances today in honour of the national day of mourning for the victims of the Bondi attack.
“Today the focus must be on Jewish Australians, indeed all Australians, as we mourn the victims of the Bondi terrorist attack,” Ley said in a statement moments ago.”

    ____

Duelling press releases, and now Littleproud doing a full press conference TODAY simply demonstrates that their ‘grief’ and ‘anger’ over the Bondi catastrophe was pure cosplay.

Wicked. Never forget. Never forgive. Ever.

  16. Anne Twomey – Hate crime laws may have unintended consequences – including chilling free speech

    https://theconversation.com/hate-crime-laws-may-have-unintended-consequences-including-chilling-free-speech-274016

“Banning a group is therefore not easy. However, as we have seen in other countries, such protections could be overcome by appointing politically motivated cronies to positions, and contending that all opposition or dissent increases the risk of politically motivated violence and community harm.
    :::
This reliance on state offences makes the law very messy. This is because in the listed offences from Queensland, South Australia and the ACT, incitement to racial hatred is tied to threatening physical harm, whereas in New South Wales, Victoria and Western Australia, no threat of harm is required. No relevant laws are listed for Tasmania or the Northern Territory. This means that whether a group can be banned on this basis may depend on where the conduct took place.
    :::
Ordinarily, we leave such assessments to independent courts and judges. For example, should a minister be the one deciding whether a defence of acting in good faith should apply, when the minister has a political interest in banning a particular group?”

  17. Trump really does sound like your silly old uncle mumbling at the end of the table.
    ———————————————————–
Gonna keep saying it. Trump is a brilliant speaker. He knows his audience. Like a popular symphony or Opera – he nails all the big notes while boring as batshit in between. Reminds me of a Rachmaninoff’s Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini. Sure, it is uncouth and basic. But his audience are the great unwashed, the poorly educated, the cooked, the selfish greed, and the cult. He works them like they are clay.

And he can do it for an hour. It is really something.

  18. The Federal coalition dying wouldn’t necessarily mean the LNP also splits. They could continue the same process they do now of dividing LNP seats into National and Liberal.

  19. If Ley is dumped now, her replacement will forever carry the albatross of being a Country Party puppet. Littleproud has effectively guaranteed her safety.

  20. “Radical Islamist group Hizb ut-Tahrir is vowing to take Labor to the High Court in order to avoid being labelled a hate organisation”

    No shit.

The Neo Nazis will also have their crack, they love a chance to grandstand in court. So they might as well write that article now too.

This ability to challenge in court will disappoint the scaremongers who would have you believe the new laws equal dictatorship.

“Rushed laws that endure forever: Australia has been expanding police state powers for 25 years

Once these powers are granted, they are very rarely relinquished.
    :::
As the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks rolled around, Professors George Williams and Kieran Hardy reviewed the now 92 pieces of terrorism related legislation passed in that time. Among their observations was the “striking speed” with which these laws had progressed through parliament. Noting that the number they had come to erred on the “very generous” side, they concluded that “across all the legislation, the bills spent an average of 2.47 days in the House of Representatives and 2.3 days in the Senate”.

  23. Interesting tweet.

    “Antony Green – elections@AntonyGreenElec
If One Nation are polling 20% in nationwide polls, there will be National held seats where One Nation are reaching 40%. It’s Queensland 1998 all over again where One Nation passed 30% in 27 of 29 National seats.”

No doubt this is on the mind of Qld Nationals this morning. We will get some indication of ON and National positions in regional seats in the SA election in March.

  24. Re Voice Endeavour @8:50.

You are right of course. With nationwide proportional representation, especially if a threshold of 4-5% applied, Australia would have a very different political party landscape. My point was to illustrate just how small the Nationals’ support base was relative to the power that they wield.

  25. Can you believe that Littleproud said at a press conference that Nationals will not be in Shadow cabinet under Sussan Ley Coalition leadership.

So he is implied that Liberals should change their leadership.
    EXTRAORDINARY!!!

Don’t you think that he has rocks in his head?

  26. Alpha Zero

Good point. More particularly they care about donations from the gun industry. Despite Bridget McKenzie’s image, most rural residents still don’t own guns.

  27. Sorry, but claiming that she could hear ongoing shooting, but wasn’t sure where it was coming from is her way of having two bob each way.

If she gets away with it, good.

If she’s called on it, she can always say she might have been mistaken about the gunfire.

She’s an ex Tabloid TV reporter isn’t she? They know ALL about clickbait , and playing dress-ups as “war” reporters.

It was good of her to help out, but the difference between helping out while bullets are actually flying, metres away from the shooter, and getting there just a bit after the danger has passed is non trivial.

  28. meher baba 7.08

Ley might be able to struggle on for a while to come

The Parliamentary Liberal Party doesn’t have much choice at the moment.
The ex partner, the Nationals don’t seem to think much of the Liberals.
The Nationals themselves have little choice and don’t think much of themselves.
You would have thought the last Federal election was the “ultimate” nadir for the historical entity, the LNP, but apparently there’s still a pulse someone, perhaps Qld.

  29. At the Federal level, Liberals are predominantly a right-wing party. They should just merge with the Nationals. The few remaining moderates who can’t stomach that can see if the Teals (or more specifically Climate 200) will have them. Ms Ley will probably find that she wants to spend more time with her family.

  30. ‘President Donald Trump assured nervous European allies on Wednesday he “won’t use force” to take Greenland while adding a not-so-subtle threat that the world’s largest island will eventually be under the U.S. flag, one way or another.

“All the U.S. is asking for is a place called Greenland,” Trump said in a wide-reaching appearance that hopscotched from Somali fraud to former President Joe Biden’s mental acumen to his Treasury Secretary’s football draft potential. The stemwinder emanated from an American leader who has conflated fealty to his agenda with dodging “World War 3” in the Arctic orbit. He accused Denmark—which controls Greenland as a semi-autonomous part of its kingdom—of being “ungrateful,” branded NATO a lopsided ally for the United States, and repeatedly painted Greenland as a de facto part of North America dating back to the Nazi era.

Still, one line stood out, as if it were a cutting-room-floor discard from Goodfellas:

“We want a piece of ice for world protection, and they won’t give it,” Trump said. “You can say yes and we will be very appreciative. Or you can say no and we will remember.”

Another way to read that familiar frame? We can do this the easy way or the hard way.

It was a flummoxing flex to Trump’s frenemies who are low on patience for his bellicose language. Amid the World Economic Forum’s confab in Davos, Switzerland—where coalition building and global cooperation are usually central themes—Trump unfurled a Western Hemisphere First school of thought that has roots in a Cold War understanding of geopolitical stasis.

He also sometimes confused Iceland for Greenland. “I’m helping Europe, I’m helping NATO, and until the last few days, when I told them about Iceland, they loved me,” Trump said.

But he did tell them—about Greenland, not Iceland—and the response from those allies has been anything but positive. In fact, they greeted Trump with near-unanimous animus.’

    The DC Brief

When the history of this period is written, the main focus will be on why Trump’s Cabinet failed to invoke the 25th.

  31. Oh dear. There will be much joy here today. The Coalition in tatters: Ley on the skids. But I am dismayed. We need a proper Opposition and surely that’s not ON.

We need to pull together to get a proper coalition reconciliation going. Sad as it is, Ley needs to go so that the Libs can have a bloke in charge again. Angus is deadwood, but I like the looks of Ted O’Brien. He’s real Tory leadership material. And just look at how well he handled the Libs’ energy policy (what number was it?) in the lead-up to May 2025. He’s the one for me.

But they also need some policies that both parties can get behind. Especially that The Bush can get behind. My suggestions:

A Pothole Repair Future Fund. Littleproud bangs on about money to fix the potholes, so do it properly: big bucks. Rural folk should be able to ring up a Fix My Pothole hotline and get some immediate action. Put Bridget in charge as shadow Minister for Rural Road Repair. She knows how to allocate money the “right” way.

A moratorium on industrial scale solar farms and wind turbines. If they don’t act soon, the entire grid will be fully “renewabled” and there simply won’t be capacity for nuclear power stations (in the cities) and the bush will lose all its humongous coal mine scenery. Matt Canavan for this one.

IGA to become a Government Business Enterprise. Country town supermarkets just aren’t big enough. We need more of them, selling stuff at much lower prices. Josh Frydenberg would nail this one, what with his experience of Park-and-Ride parking lots. We just need to get him back in.

But of course that takes me back to my starting point here. Maybe Joshy would be better than Ted for the top job? Decisions, decisions in the Lib party room.

  32. Meanwhile Teals sitting pretty. Everything they represented to their voters vindicated. You dont have to side with Labor but neither should you generate hysteria to paper over the cracks in your alliance either.

My mum voted for Monique and is pleased with her choice. No more fraudenberg or Costello puppets.

Re the National Party. They’ve clearly got massive problems with One Nation, but the stunt they pulled yesterday risks making them look weak and irrelevant.

    meher baba,
They look that way now maybe but do you see the power move Littleproud attempted to play? He wanted to be the titular Opposition leader by demanding that Ley accept his ultimatum to keep the rebel Nats on her shadow front bench, despite breaking one of the cardinal rules of the Westminster system of government. And if they had gotten away with it, no doubt they would do it again. So the Nats would then end up with all the benefits of being in the Opposition and the Coalition, with none of the downsides. Which is essentially, the possibility of being in government with their very narrow range of support.

Littleproud said at Press conference that he convinced Liberals to implement Nationals policies in the last 3 1/2 years like Voice, Nuclear power etc. implying that the tail wagged the dog.

  34. Griff re JN Price

Logically that would suggest that Price was waiting by herself. Does she have any friends left?

Alex Antic managed to get over the ‘tech issues’ – get into the chamber and cross the floor. Mind you, he is not in shadow cabinet
