Morgan: 56.5-43.5 to Labor (open thread)

Roy Morgan records a dip in the primary vote for a still-dominant ALP.

Roy Morgan pops up again with one of its federal polls accumulating nearly a month’s worth of its regular weekly polling, in this case encompassing a sample of 5001 surveyed from July 28 to August 24. It finds both major parties down on the primary vote from a month ago, Labor by two-and-a-half points to 34%, the Coalition by one to 30%. The Greens are steady on 12% and One Nation is up two to 9%. Labor’s lead on the two-party preferred measure based on 2025 election preference flows duly narrows from 57-43 to 55.5-44.5, though the change on respondent-allocated preferences is more modest, from 57-43 to 56.5-43.5. The accompanying report features breakdowns by state and gender.

DemosAU has a further result from a poll that last week that produced a finding on Palestinian statehood, this one finding 56% support for “the federal government’s proposal to ban access to YouTube for children under 16 as part of a broader social media restriction”, with 29% opposed. The poll was conducted July 31 from a sample of 1079.

Nine Newspapers had follow-up questions from the Resolve Strategic federal poll on Tuesday involving matters related to the economic roundtable, which 49% knew about and 51% didn’t. Pluralities favoured a business cashflow tax (40% for, 15% against) and reducing or abolishing negative gearing (37% and 19% against) and capital gains tax concessions (41% and 21%), but predictably opposed increasing the GST rate (20% for, 51% against) and broadening its base (26% and 44%). It also found 64% support for work-at-home guarantees along the lines being pursued by the Victorian government, with only 17% opposed.

In other news, the first vacancy of the new parliament has emerged with recently elected New South Wales One Nation Senator Warwick Stacey calling it a day less than two months after being sworn in, citing “personal health issues”. The only reporting I’ve seen on who might replace him, which will be a matter for the party’s state branch, is The Australian’s observation of “speculation Senator Hanson could replace Senator Stacey with her daughter Lee Hanson or long-term One Nation staffer James Ashby”. However, “a One Nation source rejected this, saying the replacement should rightfully be a NSW resident”.

Netanyahu has egg on his face as well, blaming our Government for the antisemitic attacks here, when it was our common enemy, Iran. Netanyahu should apologise to our Prime Minister.

    ______________________________________________

Netanyahu blamed the Government for not doing enough to protect the Jewish community. He is totally wrong but that is different to actually organising antisemitic acts which Iran has done.

  2. Netanyahu blamed the Government for not doing enough to protect the Jewish community. He is totally wrong but that is different to actually organising antisemitic acts which Iran has done.

One of the journos asked the PM whether Netanyahu owed him an apology now that this work has been done by Australia to expose Iran? The PM just said, I’m not into the personal stuff.

  3. “Iranian government directed attacks in Australia on Jewish targets. Via proxies.”
    What a shock…..

Well, I am a little shocked. Because, generally speaking, the Iranian regime isn’t that stupid. Surely this doesnt meet a risk-benefit criteria. In fact, where the F is the benefit? Suggesting to me a possibility the regime has lost control of its foreign activity.

Or they are just stupid. Or desperate.

  4. I’ll be over here waiting for The Greens’ Mehreen Faruqi to congratulate the government on its great work in this case and to stand 4 square behind the government and their support for social cohesion in Australia.

I also expect the Coalition to say that the government didn’t support Israel enough.

Our PM is far too classy and professional to engage in pleading on his own behalf. Kudos to him!

I, on the other hand, will most definitely call out Netanyahu for going off at our PM half-cocked as he did.

  8. Israel, Iran, Heshbollah, Hamas and the Houthis: when genocide is your vision statement anything less than total obliteration of a population must be ethical. Further, on the evidence being provided by all of the above, anything by way of action to give effect to the vision statement appears to make some sort of practical sense to the players.

  9. Anthony Albanese has confirmed that Australia will expel Iran’s ambassador to Canberra Ahmad Sadeghi for his role in orchestrating at least two anti-Semitic attacks, after ASIO gathered enough intelligence to reach the “deeply disturbing conclusion”.

The Prime Minister called out the slew of “appalling anti-Semitic attacks against Australia’s Jewish community” carried out since the October 7 attack, and confirmed he had recently informed the ambassador that he must depart Australia.

“These were extraordinary and dangerous acts of aggression orchestrated by a foreign nation on Australian soil,” Mr Albanese said.

“They were attempts to undermine social cohesion and sow discord in our community.

“The Australian government is taking strong and decisive action in response.”

Mr Albanese said security agencies believed Iran had been behind the attacks on Lewis’ Continental Kitchen in Bondi in October and the Adass synagogue in Melbourne.

“Iran has sought to disguise its involvement, but ASIO assesses it was behind the attacks on the Lewis’ Continental Kitchen in Sydney on October 20 last year, and the Adass Israel synagogue in Melbourne,” he said.

“ASIO assesses it’s likely Iran directed further attacks as well.”

Mr Albanese said operations at Australia’s embassy in Iran had been suspended and Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard listed as a terror organisation.

“The Australian people want two things, they want killing in the Middle East to stop, and they don’t want conflict in the Middle East brought here,” he said.

“Iran has sought to do just that. They have sought to harm and terrorise Jewish Australians and sow hatred and division in our community.

“The actions of my government send a clear message, a message to all Australians we stand against anti-Semitism, and we stand against violence.”

    For Griff and rhwombat,
A cardiac specialist believes that the bruising on Trump’s hands (it’s started on the left hand as well now), is due to his need for Spironolactone infusions to counter what he believes is Trump’s Congestive Heart Failure:

    https://youtu.be/arII_KYvxHU?si=_M2SjEolTJc26Dxo

Possibly – though it would be IV FUROSEMIDE infusions, not SPIRONOLACTONE which is usually (and is more effective for CCF) given orally. He’s probably on both, but the focus on his swollen ankles (and the unmasking of the “lifts” in all of his shoes) is kryptonite for Il Douche because it proves that he is a sick old man who won’t last any distance. What would be interesting would be to find out why he has chronic cardiac failure. Either they have managed to keep evidence of coronary artery disease very quiet or it’s amphetamine-associated CCF.

I’d love to see the clinical evidence of what a life-long diet of Coca Cola (I’m not so sure about the Maccas to the max though, it’s more likely he dines on better quality food than that due to all the dinners he attends), does to your internals. Especially at the rate Trump drinks Coke every day. I’m guessing it wouldn’t be pretty. Plus, the only exercise he does is jump in and out of a golf cart.

Btw, how close is Adderall to other amphetamines? That’s the only upper he is ever accused of consuming. Also, could the CAD have been exacerbated by COVID-19 getting into his heart muscle?

Adderall is a 3:1 dextroamphetamine/levoamphetamine mixture – so chronic use is just as likely to cause amphetamine cardiomyopathy (& the CCF caused by intermittent tachycardia) as the other amphetamines (e.g. MDMA). COVID seems to cause an acute (<12 months) spike in vascular events (like CAD related acute myocardial infarcts) as well as a more chronic mitochondrial cardiomyopathy, so I doubt that his 2020 COVID infection can be blamed. Despite the shit diet, it's Il Douche's lack of exercise that's really doing him in. BTW NYHA Grade 3 CCF (which he has) has ~40% mortality at 36 months, so his chances are better than Dick Cheney's – which is probably ironic.

  13. Exactly! From Bluesky:

+1 As we both have said before, there are bad actors on all sides in the current mid-east conflicts. There are no good guys there, only a need to negotiate an end to fighting to minimise civilian deaths.

Albo was correct to expel the Iranian ambassador. These were blatant hostile acts towards another country, as well as attempting to interfere in our politics. Recall the timing was in the runup to the last Federal election.

  16. More about “Dirty Dyson”, Howard Government’s appoint to the High Court:

Former High Court Judge Dyson Heydon was known as “Dirty Dyson” and “Handsy Heydon” due to his lecherous behaviour towards young women students at Oxford University.

The Sydney Morning Herald and The Age revealed on Monday that an independent inquiry by the High Court found Mr Heydon had sexually harassed six associates and that other women including a judge and the former head of the ACT Law Society alleged he indecently assaulted them.

Mr Heydon through his lawyers has denied all the allegations against him.

Former High Court justice Dyson Heydon was found in an inquiry by the High Court to have harassed six associates.

The Herald and The Age can now reveal claims about his behaviour extend to Britain where he is the subject of allegations, including inappropriate touching.

Following his mandatory retirement from the High Court in 2013 aged 70, Dyson Heydon sought out a teaching position at the prestigious English university, where he had studied on a Rhodes scholarship in 1964.

His three-year appointment at the Faculty of Law was greeted with excitement within the university, according to documents released under freedom of information laws.

Mr Heydon’s lectures were scheduled to occur early each year from 2014 to 2016 inclusive. However, allegations about his behaviour would cast a dark shadow over Mr Heydon’s tenure.

“My first introduction to him was that all the Australian law students at Oxford called him ‘Dirty Dyson’, that seemed to be the moniker he had widely,” one former student said.

One of Mr Heydon’s postgraduate students, whom the Herald and The Age have chosen not to name, was so upset and angry about Mr Heydon’s harassment of her in the Bodleian Library, that she complained to the university.

The university decided not to renew Mr Heydon’s visiting professorship. In heavily redacted documents released to the Herald and The Age under FOI, the reason for the university’s decision was not apparent.

Elizabeth Houghton, an Australian law graduate, alleges she was harassed by Dyson Heydon at Oxford University.

“The Personnel Committee has already taken a decision that Dyson Heydon should not be renewed,” stated Oxford Law Faculty Dean Anne Davies in an email dated June 1, 2016. “We have written to tell him this.”

Mr Heydon’s post, which included free economy airfares to Oxford plus salary and rent, had barely begun before the first alleged harassment occurred.

It was January 21, 2014, and 27-year-old West Australian Elizabeth Houghton was in her second year at Oxford, studying for a Masters. The student decided to sit in on property and trusts seminars taught by Professor Heydon. Ms Houghton attended the first class, of about 12 mostly male students, just after the Christmas break.

“People have to understand the power dynamic,” Ms Houghton told the Herald and The Age. As the retired judge was introduced to the class, the tone was set “for the pedestal he was on and the respect he commanded” with a discussion about “which honorific we should use” to address him, she said.

Mr Heydon singled her out on that first day, Ms Houghton said, and asked her to join him at lunch following the seminar. She understood it was a lunch with other students but arrived at Quod, an elegant restaurant on Oxford’s High Street, to find she was the judge’s only guest. He had already ordered wine and refilled her glass as they discussed her research.

“He was very friendly at that first lunch and that was it,” she said. “Then we went to leave, and he said ‘Oh, I have to make another lunch booking’.”

    https://www.abc.net.au/news/2025-08-26/iran-behind-antisemitic-attacks-asio-says/105697762

Appearing in the prime minister’s courtyard on Tuesday, the spy agency’s director-general, Mike Burgess, said Melbourne’s Adass Israel Synagogue attack from last December and Sydney’s Lewis Continental Kitchen attack from last October were ordered by Iran and believed the country was behind further attacks.

He said no diplomats or embassy staff were involved, adding “offshore organised crime” was involved but that he did not believe any Australian criminal gangs were.

So, by expelling the Iranian ambassador, we are punishing the local Iranian community … for something that AISO acknowledges neither had any involvement in.

But when it comes to the ambassador of the country actually committing genocide by forcibly starving hundreds of thousands of innocent people, and calling our PM a “liar” for saying so …

Given the timing of the protest and the fire, it is highly likely the accused attempted arsonist was at the rally at some point.
Another thing that was evident was the person accused did not have any local knowledge. Firstly, One of the main city fire stations is a couple doors down the street, but fronts onto the Gisborne Street. Secondly, the main area with a lot of synagogues is south of the Yarra about 5 kms south of the city, many which are much larger and more clearer synagogues.”

    ______________________

Why would expelling the Iranian ambassador be an act of “punishing” the local Iranian community? They are fellow Australians and do not answer/belong to Iran, nor need to answer for Iran.

Its like claiming we should be suspicious of the Chinese community because they “belong” to the CCP.

  32. I guess it has to be explained at Primary School level to those who simply cannot find it within themselves to believe anything the Albanese government says or does, exactly why Australia was targeted and how those who orchestrated the attacks in Australia did it. Specifically for the benefit of the embittered Lunar Left idiot Sohar, the ever-on-the-look-out for something they can use against the Albanese government, Player One and Rex Douglas (who I’m disappointed in for getting swept up in the lunacy of the Far Left).

    1. The Iranian Revolutionary Guard orchestrated the attacks in Australia.
    2. They used Organised Crime gang members and leaders based in the Middle East, likely Dubai because that’s where they all seem to accrete when they flee Australia, though Lebanon is also getting a reputation in that area as well now.
    3. These Australia-connected organised crime leaders contacted their connections in Australia.
    4. The Australia connections proffered money to those desperate to get money, probably for their addictions, to carry out the attacks as ordered from overseas.
    5. The Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps made great efforts to cover their tracks. Eventually ASIO connected the dots.
    6. The reason Australia was chosen? Our successful multicultural society. Our social cohesion, as the PM and the Director General of ASIO, both pointed to. It is the envy of the world. Theocracies don’t like that. They are highly-motivated to seek to destroy it.

As the story the other week of ISIS recruiting at the Pro Palestine marches demonstrated in neon lights. These people never tire in their quest to religiously radicalise democracies and their people and turn them into theocracies of their own colour and stripe.

As a story about Erin Patterson’s companions in high security demonstrated today coincidentally:

    https://www.smh.com.au/national/victoria/a-hair-straightener-a-fan-and-lots-of-wool-inside-erin-patterson-s-prison-cell-20250825-p5mpo3.html

These countries have mastered the art of breaking people’s brains:

Others housed inside the unit long-term, the court heard, included Antonietta Mannella, the girlfriend of crime kingpin George Marrogi, and convicted terrorist Momena Shoma.

She later admitted to investigators she had previously lied her way through a deradicalisation program, and referred to herself as a “soldier of Islamic State” who would attack again if given the chance.

Justice Dixon told her on Friday: “Your commission of an act of terrorism was motivated by a warped and violent ideology that is antithetical to the values of our democratic society.”

Shoma had a privileged childhood in Dhaka but her mother’s death in 2015 left her grief-stricken and without direction, the court heard previously, and she consumed Islamic State’s online propaganda and became radicalised.

    https://www.theage.com.au/national/victoria/terrorist-s-jail-term-raised-to-48-years-after-garden-shears-attack-20211203-p59egx.html

It appears that they are worming their way into the brains of some here, who should be wiser.

  33. The Iranian Ambassador was NOT accused of being involved in the attacks. He is being expelled because his country WAS the originator of the attacks.

A lie spreads around the internet before the truth can get its pants on and all that.

  34. TPOF,
Tony Bourke pointed that out in the press conference and said that the legislation will have to be amended to reflect that. It’s only the IRGC that will be declared a terrorist group, however, not the whole Iranian government. That distinction now needs to be made in legislation.

  35. Entropy – I stand by the fact that the alleged Arsonist on the East Melbourne synagogue could easily have used rally as cover. But then again he may not have.
By the second part of that comment of mine – that the alleged attacker didn’t have local knowledge – was very likely to be true. The Metro east fire station is literally a 100 metres away from the synagogue.

Certainly the attack on the restaurant that evening was linked to people who had attended the rally.

So In USA Trump terms. It would be similar to just declaring ICE as a terrorist organisation and not the whole Trump Government. Though might as well throw in Pete Hegseth as well for good measure if we were to do that.

  37. Radicalisation of people connected with the Pro Palestine Movement in Australia and the marchers is a project, as the evidence suggests, of ISIS and the IRGC.

Of course, not everyone associated with the movement is suspected of being radicalised in a dangerous and criminal way, but as the great Julia Gillard said, it’s not nothing. You only need a few with a screw loose or a need for money, to achieve your goals.
