Roy Morgan pops up again with one of its federal polls accumulating nearly a month’s worth of its regular weekly polling, in this case encompassing a sample of 5001 surveyed from July 28 to August 24. It finds both major parties down on the primary vote from a month ago, Labor by two-and-a-half points to 34%, the Coalition by one to 30%. The Greens are steady on 12% and One Nation is up two to 9%. Labor’s lead on the two-party preferred measure based on 2025 election preference flows duly narrows from 57-43 to 55.5-44.5, though the change on respondent-allocated preferences is more modest, from 57-43 to 56.5-43.5. The accompanying report features breakdowns by state and gender.
DemosAU has a further result from a poll that last week that produced a finding on Palestinian statehood, this one finding 56% support for “the federal government’s proposal to ban access to YouTube for children under 16 as part of a broader social media restriction”, with 29% opposed. The poll was conducted July 31 from a sample of 1079.
Nine Newspapers had follow-up questions from the Resolve Strategic federal poll on Tuesday involving matters related to the economic roundtable, which 49% knew about and 51% didn’t. Pluralities favoured a business cashflow tax (40% for, 15% against) and reducing or abolishing negative gearing (37% and 19% against) and capital gains tax concessions (41% and 21%), but predictably opposed increasing the GST rate (20% for, 51% against) and broadening its base (26% and 44%). It also found 64% support for work-at-home guarantees along the lines being pursued by the Victorian government, with only 17% opposed.
In other news, the first vacancy of the new parliament has emerged with recently elected New South Wales One Nation Senator Warwick Stacey calling it a day less than two months after being sworn in, citing “personal health issues”. The only reporting I’ve seen on who might replace him, which will be a matter for the party’s state branch, is The Australian’s observation of “speculation Senator Hanson could replace Senator Stacey with her daughter Lee Hanson or long-term One Nation staffer James Ashby”. However, “a One Nation source rejected this, saying the replacement should rightfully be a NSW resident”.

JD Vance’s claim that all major conflicts since World War 2 ended in negotiation doesn’t hold water. Plenty of conflicts ended when one side over ran the other. For example, Vietnam ended with the North over running the south. Likewise, the Ethiopian civil war ended that way.

…As she is not Roman Catholic…
– – – – – – – – – –
While I am sure no offense was intended, can I point out that “Catholic” is quite sufficient for your purposes here. “Roman Catholic” has a long history as a pejorative term used by the British Establishment, and their born-to-rule colonial offshoots, to label, stereotype and disenfranchise people (including my ancestors). It became so 300 years ago, when it formally replaced the more obviously bigoted “Papist” in discriminatory legislation, to question the loyalty of people following a non-establishment faith. A very “sticky” phrase compared to other familiar pejoratives; this was still in use as an attempted put-down when I lived in London in the 1990s (on the mistaken assumption that my Catholic and Irish ancestry gave me any bit of skin in the “Troubles” that were then coming to an end).
“Roman Catholic” does have legitimate meanings, to distinguish the mainstream from, say Ukrainian Catholics (such as Australian Cardinal Mykola Bychok), or to refer to services held in Latin (according to the “Roman Rite”), but these have been as rare as rocking horse shit in Australia since Vatican II, 60-odd years ago. However neither of these use-cases are relevant to your comment about the Shoppies.
I hasten to add, I give 9/10ths of no fucks at all – I find it a more quaint than anything – but just sayin’, for the wider cultural appreciation. Australia has largely left its Christian-sectarian animosities behind, but some of my older relo’s can recall when they were a real thing. In its way, it’s a passé version of conflating “Jewish” and “Israeli”. I think that issue has been mentioned once or twice here recently.
——————————————————
The Roman Catholic Church is an accepted term even by the Church itself. It is more specific as to what church you are actually referring to than just using the term “Catholic”. As in this instance the SDA, which operates a closed and religiously discriminating shop, the exact term is important. As only Roman Catholics and not other so called Catholics would be allowed as officials in the SDA.
The term used by the British Establishment against the Roman Catholic church in a discriminatory manner was “papists”.
The word Catholic is from the Greek and means inclusive. It is hardly a term that fits with SDA’s religious discrimination practices.

Actually along with most Asian Cultures, Mrs Upnorth being for Chinese decent, places a great deal of importance in “face”. So it’s a very bad thing to “lose face” and admit a mistake.
The ongoing conflict between Cambodia and Thailand is a classic example. Some old Temple ruins that we wouldn’t give two hoots about become symbols of Nationalistic Pride for both sides.
Chinas’ wronging during the 18th and 19th Century. The Unequal Treaties and invasion by Japan will mean an increasingly powerful China ensuring it does everything in its power never to lose face again, including trade negotiations.
It’s part of the Asian psyche be it at personal, family or national levels. Never lose face.
And that’s why in Australia the majority of the Asian diaspora (even those born in later years) won’t forget the slights directed at them 30 years ago by Hanson and One Nation. They will continue avoid the LNP as long as it does preference deals with One Nation and Labor should highlight this at each election.
Trump Ousts Fed Governor Lisa Cook Amid Mortgage Allegations
United States News
U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Monday that he was firing Federal Reserve governor Lisa Cook, intensifying his push to assert influence over the central bank. In a post, Trump cited allegations from ally Bill Pulte that Cook made false statements on a 2021 mortgage application. Federal law permits Fed governors to be removed only “for cause,” and Trump said Cook’s actions met that threshold. In a letter to Cook, he wrote: “The American people must be able to have full confidence in the honesty of the members entrusted with setting policy and overseeing the Federal Reserve. In light of your deceitful and potentially criminal conduct in a financial matter, they cannot and I do not have such confidence in your integrity.”

Rex Patrick’s favourite naval supplier (TKMS) caught bribing Australia journos for favourable coverage:
_____
‘Integrity’ Rex Patrick keeps pining for a german sub deal that maybe coulda happened – should happened – sometime between the 2009 and 2013 Defence White Papers.
Unfortunately for TKMS, when they actually got the chance to bid for an Australian Submarine Contract back in 2015 they (along with the Japanese) demonstrably failed to submit a proposal that met the contract specifications. Specifically, costed proposals for the use of Lockheed Martin’s Virginia Class combat system and American fire (weapons) systems were not included. Nor was the contract requirement for a technology transfer (essential for a sovereign capability to be sustained for the through life of the boats), or a local build addressed in their tender documents. Belatedly – after the bids closed – the germans put out some statements that each of these issues could be addressed … but only AFTER they won the bid. When they lost the bid, they then leaked a price tag of ‘$25 billion’ for 12 subs and ‘yes, we will build them in Australia’ (even though the local build was not included in that price, nor were the other missing contract requirements costed).
Only the French provided a completely costed proposal which addressed every single contract requirement. THAT, and the fact that their offering was considered to be a superior offering, was why Naval Group won the competitive evaluation process (CEP) tender. Which is why the National Audit Office later gave the CEP decision a big tick.
It is regrettable that only after the Attack Class Program was cancelled that we got clarity on what the ‘$50 billion’ announceable in 2016 actually meant. In short, the Naval Group contract to build 12 subs was worth $32 billion Dallars, and a further $18 billion dollars was set aside for ‘program costs’. These figures are expressed in 2016 ‘constant value’ dollars. When ScoMo cancelled the contract the final contract sign off – submitted to cabinet – proved that there was no huge ‘cost blow out’. The $32 billion Naval Group Contract was still on track for $32 billion in ‘2016 constant dollars’ and the estimate for associated ‘program costs’ had actually shrunk from $18 billion to $15 billion.
… and yet, ‘Integrity Rex’ Patrick keeps recycling the ‘$90 billion’ blow out contract to push his TKMS barrow – knowing full well that the difference between the $50 billion ‘announceable’ and the later disclose of a $90 billion estimate merely reflected the difference between ‘constant value’ dollars and ‘turned out costs’ – over the 37 year life span of the build contract.
… and of course, his cypher on bludger, ‘Integrity Rex’ Douglas keeps doing a Pegasus style ‘cut n’ paste’ of Patrick’s dishonest claims on this topic, even though I take the time to call him out for this shitfuckery every time he does it.
Gosh, I wonder if Bill “Kisstheorangeminidick” Pulte will mysteriously get the Federal Reserve Governor’s job after helping to knife Lisa Cook. Besides, only Repugs are allowed to rort the system now.

For Griff and rhwombat,
A cardiac specialist believes that the bruising on Trump’s hands (it’s started on the left hand as well now), is due to his need for Spironolactone infusions to counter what he believes is Trump’s Congestive Heart Failure:
https://youtu.be/arII_KYvxHU?si=_M2SjEolTJc26Dxo
Possibly – though it would be IV FUROSEMIDE infusions, not SPIRONOLACTONE which is usually (and is more effective for CCF) given orally. He’s probably on both, but the focus on his swollen ankles (and the unmasking of the “lifts” in all of his shoes) is kryptonite for Il Douche because it proves that he is a sick old man who won’t last any distance. What would be interesting would be to find out why he has chronic cardiac failure. Either they have managed to keep evidence of coronary artery disease very quiet or it’s amphetamine-associated CCF.
I’d love to see the clinical evidence of what a life-long diet of Coca Cola (I’m not so sure about the Maccas to the max though, it’s more likely he dines on better quality food than that due to all the dinners he attends), does to your internals. Especially at the rate Trump drinks Coke every day. I’m guessing it wouldn’t be pretty. Plus, the only exercise he does is jump in and out of a golf cart.
Btw, how close is Adderall to other amphetamines? That’s the only upper he is ever accused of consuming. Also, could the CAD have been exacerbated by COVID-19 getting into his heart muscle?
