The potential for a Liberal legal challenge to the result in Bradfield remains the only complication to a resolution of the federal election, with a 40-day period for the lodgement of such a challenge to commence when the Australian Electoral Commission returns the writs, which it must do by July 9. The impasse also stands in the way of a final resolution of the national two-party preferred result, with the AEC relating it is loath to disturb the ballot papers as required to complete its Labor-versus-Liberal count for the seat. The current progress result recorded for the seat on the AEC site is stuck at an early stage accounts for only about 10% of the total, and is evidently dominated by strong areas for the Liberals. With full results available for all other seats, the final result looks likely to land at 55.2-44.8 to Labor.
We remain in something of a limbo on the federal polling front. Roy Morgan had the first voting intention poll of the term last week, but has apparently not resumed its normal weekly schedule. Peter Lewis of Essential Research says his agency’s normally fortnightly poll is “on a post-election sabbatical/hiatus for a few months”. Experience suggests Newspoll in The Australian may be another month away, and Resolve Strategic for Nine Newspapers perhaps another month more.
Never fear though, for a snap Tasmanian election may shortly be upon us, just 14 months after an election at which the Liberals held on to power with the support of a now alienated cross-bench. The state’s Governor currently considering Premier Jeremy Rockliff’s request for a dissolution following last week’s parliamentary no confidence motion. I’ll have a post up on that when the situation becomes clearer, and if an election indeed ensues, will put together a guide for it as fast as humanly possible and set to work on live results. Local hero Kevin Bonham relates that the window for such an election is in the four weeks between July 19 and August 9.

Captain Dave Evans essentially speculates that it is a case of pilot error based on the belief that flaps were retracted instead of gear, but that doesn’t seem consistent with
– video and audio evidence of ram air turbine deployment
– pilot mayday call stating power loss
– surviving passenger states cabin went dark followed by flickering green lights
These indicate double engine failure and consequent loss of thrust and electrical power. The gear cannot be retracted in this state. There is a suggestion from passengers on the previous flight that the cabin AC was not working because the APU was inoperable.
There is a, I would say racist, tendency to assume pilot error in developing nation plane crashes. This was seen in the case of the 737 max which was designed to nosedive into the ground in the event of a sensor failure.

I am not a fan of the ‘wholesale cleanout / generational change’ approach to team renewal. One only has to look at the Chicago Bulls clean-out post their double three-peat era to see how that works out … to doesnt.
Besides which, I don’t think ‘the old guard’ has failed us. They have been consistently the best team team over the past 24 months. Whilst there has been top order failures in this test match I think the batting spine have largely been caught in a beam sea – rusty from a lack of first class cricket in the long form of the game and batting on a horrifying – underprepared – tricky pitch on the first two days of this match.
Remember – South Africa have earned their spot in this final by outplaying and ‘outsmarting’ more credentialed test teams. They are no bunnies. Yet despite our top order failures, australia comprehensively outplayed them for 2 days before the pitch dried out and turned into a road under clear London skies on day three.
That all being said, it is unfathomable as to why the selectors did what they haven’t done before over the last two years – and elevate an out of form Marnus to open. Especially when they have a specialist, fearless, young opener in the squad. or why, having only played second tier county cricket recently they picked Green at no.3. … again however, these a mere details. There have been two completely different pitches o offer this test. Unfortunately australia had to bat twice on the worst one, and Sa are likely to win by default because of the road now in play on day 3 and 4. Australia needs a miracle. Two quick wickets and cloudy overcast and humid conditions on day 4 to turn things around again.
Going forward, ‘generational change’ and team renewal is not realistic given that Australian Cricket have effectively destroyed first class cricket in this country. The Shield is played between long bouts of T20 and frankly, none of the likely ‘contenders’ show the form that would warrant them replacing underperforming established test players.
Greg Chappell is 100% right now- Cricket Australia needs to bring forward the Shield competition by two full months – rounding the first 4-5 rounds in the northern late dry season (August and September) in Darwin, Townsville and Cairns before wrapping up the remaining matches ‘down south’ between October and early December. That would mean, that by the time that the selectors sit down to pick their preferred test team for the Australian summer, the established players have all played several – perhaps half a dozen – shield matches at the same time as ‘the contenders’ are displaying their current form and the test team can be picked on relevant form.
The other innovation I would add is to always pick an Australian Second Eleven to travel with the test team when they are playing away test series in the Test championship and have them play four day games against the host’s second eleven – or their premier first class team – so as to keep ‘the contenders’ match ready for any call up. Also to give them the exposure of playing in local conditions in the long form of the game.
