Mid-week miscellany: federal poll drought edition (open thread)

Some observations on when regular federal polling might be expected to resume, and the Tasmanian state election that could potentially give us something to chew on in the meantime.

The potential for a Liberal legal challenge to the result in Bradfield remains the only complication to a resolution of the federal election, with a 40-day period for the lodgement of such a challenge to commence when the Australian Electoral Commission returns the writs, which it must do by July 9. The impasse also stands in the way of a final resolution of the national two-party preferred result, with the AEC relating it is loath to disturb the ballot papers as required to complete its Labor-versus-Liberal count for the seat. The current progress result recorded for the seat on the AEC site is stuck at an early stage accounts for only about 10% of the total, and is evidently dominated by strong areas for the Liberals. With full results available for all other seats, the final result looks likely to land at 55.2-44.8 to Labor.

We remain in something of a limbo on the federal polling front. Roy Morgan had the first voting intention poll of the term last week, but has apparently not resumed its normal weekly schedule. Peter Lewis of Essential Research says his agency’s normally fortnightly poll is “on a post-election sabbatical/hiatus for a few months”. Experience suggests Newspoll in The Australian may be another month away, and Resolve Strategic for Nine Newspapers perhaps another month more.

Never fear though, for a snap Tasmanian election may shortly be upon us, just 14 months after an election at which the Liberals held on to power with the support of a now alienated cross-bench. The state’s Governor currently considering Premier Jeremy Rockliff’s request for a dissolution following last week’s parliamentary no confidence motion. I’ll have a post up on that when the situation becomes clearer, and if an election indeed ensues, will put together a guide for it as fast as humanly possible and set to work on live results. Local hero Kevin Bonham relates that the window for such an election is in the four weeks between July 19 and August 9.

Did you know that the Jews killed Jesus? And unless they converted to Christianity they were as guilty as the Pharisees and needed to be punished down the centuries?

I never said they where. My point is many people aren’t able to see nuance. So whether they like it or not. They will get tarred with the one brush by many. Which I’m assuming was Ven’s point and not that they have some collective guilt. Which would be wrong to say.

I acknowledge your point as I too have often shaken my head at ABCs news reports and other programs but to its credit the ABC has had journalists such as Sara Ferguson and Laura Tingle who have spoken out with balanced critical commentary.
The ABC is not balanced but its not yet a puppet news arm of the Coalition- which I believe is their objective.
Let’s hope three terms of Labor government can repair the inbalance in commentary and restore the ABC to a position of trust with the whole community.

One of the reasons why Chinese Australians voted so strongly for Labor was Dutton’s rhetoric. It wasn’t that Dutton accused them of being more loyal to the PRC than to Australia – it’s that he left it out there with anyone who wanted to make that connection. Chinese Australians felt it. And they knew who to blame.

I’m finding it hard to get my head around the concept of ‘Jewishness ‘as used in your earlier post. Netanyahu IS a Jew so obviously he is going to feel like one and act like one. He is also the one who is expected to protect his people to the best of his ability, which in my opinion is exactly what he is trying to do, while all of his neighbours are doing their level best to wipe out the country he leads, along with everyone in it.

  10. Arky

I assume he disagreed, in which case well done for making him right for one time in his life.

I was arguing a case – not necessarily agreeing with it. I find it interesting to consider the effect having nuclear weapons has on a small/medium power. It was at a time that democratic popular feeling was growing in Iran. There were some Iranians in power or near to power that were progressive in their thinking. But Iran was far from secure. Pakistan had nukes, it was an open secret that Israel had them, Russia and even Turkey had them (via Nato iirc) and Iraq/Afghanistan was supported by the US and the Saudis are not friendly to them at all and may have agreements with Pakistan on nukes. My argument was that a country was more likely to progress into responsible, democratic and liberal government if they (the people and the powers) felt secure.

Downer, despite being a “lecturer” in such matters at the time, just fell into old habits of ‘Iran=baddies, so Iran with nukes=bad’. No attempt to consider the core of the issue; how on earth Iran was ever going to move on from a hardline, internationally belligerent, domestically paramilitary controlled theocracy. That maybe their insecurity is part of the problem.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese says the Trump administration should stick with the Aukus agreement on nuclear submarines, describing it as a tool for peace and stability.

The Pentagon said on Thursday the 30-day review was aimed at ensuring the military pact between Australia, the US and Britain best served the interests of the United States.

It will be run by Under-Secretary of Defence for Policy Elbridge Colby, a sceptic of AUKUS. Albanese said the review was appropriate for the new Trump Administration.

    He said:

The United States, as an incoming government, is having a review, just like the Australian government did with our defense strategic review, and just like the government of Keir Starmer in the United Kingdom had as well.

We are very confident, though, that Aukus is in the interest of all three of our nations, and that it will play an important role in peace, security and stability around the world at a time when that is absolutely necessary.

The thing about the airplane crash in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, India, is that it ploughed into the Medical hostel.
The plane had 242 passengers and crew in total. So it seems atleast 24 people on ground died because 1 passenger survived from plane crash.

  25. @Team Katich “My argument was that a country was more likely to progress into responsible, democratic and liberal government if they (the people and the powers) felt secure.”

I can’t agree that expanding nuclear weapon proliferation to anybody, let alone a theological dictatorship, is a good idea on the mere offchance that the people will feel so secure they spontaneously overthrow their now nuclear armed bosses. One might argue alternatively that if the nukes make them feel more secure, they will attribute that security to the Ayatollah and support the status quo all the harder.

Also, as we’ve seen in Russia one cannot rely on democracy sticking. But one can certainly rely on nuclear weapons sticking.

I think the “Iran are bad and giving nukes to them is bad” argument holds more water tbh, simple as it is.

At least the Kims in North Korea are pragmatists interested solely in perpetuating their own power in North Korea. I wouldn’t trust Iran to not just nuke their enemies one day out of pure burning religious hatred of the infidel. Theocracies, man. Can’t trust ’em.

  26. “I have problems understanding how you can support his genocide.”

My guess is that it would probably come back to money

  27. Entropy
I agree. Our two positions are irreconcilable. What you call genocide I call self defence. I also question a lot of what is allegedly occurring in Gaza which attempts to put Israel in the worst possible light. I am not Jewish myself, nor do I have any Jewish friends. But I have done a lot of reading on the matter, both the background and current events. It’s not very pretty and there are no easy answers. I just think that in the circumstances Israel has every right to protect itself in any way that it can.

  28. A_E & Up north [test cricket final]

Agree it’s anybody’s game at this stage. But I’m backing Australia’s world class bowling attack to get the job done, as they have so many times before.

The Jarpies have not faced such a bowling attack as ours of late (they got into this final bashing up test minnow teams) and I predict they will be found out in their 2nd innings the same as they were in the 1st innings.

History shows batting last at Lords is a tough assignment and Steve Smith, a very good judge of pitches, reported that the pitch on day 1 was already two paced. So I doubt it will be a road.

Look out for Nathan Lyon to play a big role today. He bowled superbly yesterday with little assistance from the pitch, tying down one end and giving our quicks a much needed breather. Today the pitch may turn a bit more and he will have Mitchell Starc’s footmarks to work with.

Finally, I expect my Penrith Cricket Club clubmate, Pat Cummins (from Mt Riverview in the lower Blue Mountains), to as usual, step up to the plate and deliver the goods for Australia (“cometh the hour, cometh the man”).
