The latest fortnightly Essential Research poll has both parties up on the primary vote, the Coalition by two to 35% and Labor by one to 30%, with the Greens steady on 13%, One Nation up one to 8% and undecided down one to 5%. The pollster’s 2PP+ measure has Labor and the Coalition tied on 48%, with the balance undecided. Further results show a 69-31 split in favour of the government’s cap on international students, together with various other findings on the theme of education. Fifty-three per cent expressed support for the Future Made in Australia policy, following a question that said it would “provide funding for large-scale renewable energy projects that support the creation of local jobs”, with 18% opposed. The poll was conducted Tuesday to Saturday from a sample of 1132.
The weekly Roy Morgan poll has Labor leading 51-49 on two-party preferred, out from 50.5-49.5 last time, from primary votes of Labor 30% (down half), Coalition 36.5% (up half), Greens 14.5% (up one-and-a-half) and One Nation 6% (steady). Going off preference flows from the previous election rather than as allocated by poll respondents, Labor’s two-party lead is unchanged at 52-48. The poll was conducted Monday to Sunday from a sample of 1703.
Also, further results from the Resolve Strategic poll indicate remarkable pessimism on interest rates, which 40% expect to go up over the next year compared with only 15% for down and 34% for stay the same. Fifty-one per cent rated that the federal government and the Treasurer had “the greater responsibility for keeping inflation down” compared with 27% for the Reserve Bank and 22% for both equally. A question on gambling advertising found 51% support for banning gambling advertisements on television entirely, with 32% supporting the government’s policy of a cap on two ads per hour during live sports and none during children’s programming.
Nothing further on Israel please.

People usually care about international events if it has some significance to their opinion about domestic politics no matter how tenuous.
No one talks about human rights abuses in Saudi Arabia because it has no connection to our politics.

Good to see that you have decided to diversify with respect to your espoused concern on being prompted.
Well Griff, I expanded because it was no longer just about TOPIC RESCINDED. If we were talking about school shootings (so give it a few days) then I would of course be talking about those poor students and those damnable US gun laws.
But as noted earlier, one of the big reasons why TOPIC RESCINDED is such a lightning rod is that unlike other cases of human rights abuses and war crimes (such as Russias horrendous actions in Ukraine), there is an acceptance and support in the anglosphere/parts of the West.
And as democratic citizens, our government is, sadly, ours. The same cannot be said about any autocratic, or theocratic, or authoritarian etc etc governments and their citizens. As citizens of a democracy (and likely one of the best democracies system wise in the world) it is our duty to call out the government (not simply through voting) when it acts in such a way counter to the supposed morals and ideals of that government and country.
As noted yesterday, it is a war crime per international law (which Australia ascribes by) to sell weapons, arms, or goods that can be utilised as such, to nations engaged in human rights abuses. If we sold rockets to Russia, you would rightly be disgusted by the government. I would note Ukraine has seen a death toll of 11,520 civies. Now, imagine you saw the government engaged in actions like that… do you think that might not be a hot topic for those with strong feelings regarding, say, human rights and international law?
Especially since Australia is oh so happy to hide behind international norms and laws when, say, China breaks them. So on top of the human loss and cost, the hypocrisy rings loud.

That tanking in Victorian Labor PV is a concern to say the least.
Jacinta Allan and Vic Labor are heading for a defeat. Too many own goals. Plus, the Vic Labor right are gnawing away at her leadership.
Victorians will reject Dutton though. Have no doubt about that.
===============================================
Agree with you on the 1st point Rex, but disagree with you on the 2nd.
Jacinta Allan is in a bit of strife, and there are several recent polls to confirm this.
Once the rot sets in, it sets in, and the trend in Vic against Labor has been in place since around the Jun-5 You Gov poll. Note this pre-dates the Senator Payman fiasco over the weekend of Jun 29-30.
What I’m saying is that the Victoria “issue” relates to other issues, not Sen. Payman which has affected the Federal ALP vote.
Back to Victoria: Remember, Albo faces the voters first, then Jacinta second.
I believe Albo may be in a bit of strife in Vic.
Think about the 1990 Fed election results in Victoria.
Victorian’s are fairly calm and collected Australian’s, but when they decide they want to be upset, it tends to affect the whole state. Remember 1990.
Australia was supplying Helicopters and Machine Guns and a lot more to PNG during the Bougainville War during the Reign of St. Hawke.

nadia88, you appear to be able to detect very fine changes due to Payman, as it isn’t really apparent on Bludgertrack. The major shift occurred during the referendum. The rest is minor.

Yes you are correct Griff, the referendum issue caused the ALP primary to wobble. No arguments from anyone there.
Since June 29/30 – the ALP primary has sunk below 30%, on latest count, at now 10 polls, from various pollsters.
The ALP had a good story to tell late June, but the current rot set in over the weekend of the Payman defection.
Polldata tab has the brutal figures.

Once again cost of living lost control of number of students coming in labor.
Inflation stuck big trouble now interest rates have been cut overseas eu second cut tonight coming and rate cuts are popping up all over the world driving demand in Australia shortly via WA/Qld exporters.
Starting this cycle with inflation too high.Spending a few billion in WA as promised by Albo over 4 days last week adds more inflation.

I see Labor primaries starting with 2 from back in March. If I were split trend lines pre and post end-June I don’t think I would see much of a difference, but I am just eye-balling it and happy to be corrected 🙂
Since when werent the left pissed at Hawke and Keating?
It didn’t happen?
Now, i’m casting no aspersions about who is and isn’t a victim in LeftieWorld, but i’m assuming that it wasn’t seen as a problem for the IS and SWP?
Yes Griff, there were a couple of sub 30% ALP primaries, before Jun 29/30, most notably the 29% primary issued by Morgan on Jan 7, on a sample > 1700, which got 2024 off and running.
The trend since late June has been more diabolical for Labor.
We’ll see how things track over late Sep/Oct & Nov.

Yes.
What is surprising is that Labor’s primary vote isnt actually lower given the decline in living standards . I am guessing the new baseline is really 20% Labor primary.
It’s not so much Pasokification as institutions are in secular decline – unions, churches, community groups etc.
The 20% is really the public sector rump support for Labor which is often seen on here.
By contrast the rump for the Liberals is probably 30% with 50% broken up in groups of 10-15% for the Greens etc and about 15% representing swinging voters.
It follows something like prop rep makes sense for the future of Australian politics.
Per the A.C.T.
The “Hare clark” – scare clark voting system is not good for TV optics.
It is time for the A.C.T. to be split up into 25 electorates. The A.C.T. is big enough for this.
I hope this is the last “Hare Clark” nightmare we have to watch on Oct.19.

PP
I am not aware of any polling. Corflutes are beginning to show. There is a bit of desultory door knocking. My general sense is that there is not a whole lot of interest amongst the hoi polloi, perhaps reflecting the somewhat jaded boredom of what seems to be a perpetual government.
There has been something of an attempt to get Indies up. I am expecting nowt to come from that.
The Liberals have (a) kicked out a sitting member for bullying behaviour (I may have that 100% wrong) and have (b) promised to build a half billion dollar convention centre ‘quickly’. They don’t have a site but the site that is doing the rounds (on the bucolic foreshores of LBG), is under the auspices of the National Capital Authority and of the Australian Capital Territory. It is also subject to random interventions for anyone who is supposed to be the relevant Federal Minister.
So whatever else you might want to say about the Centre, it will not be built quickly.
Bullying and supposedly misusing tax payer and party funds.
Nothing but the best from the ACT Libs
