Newspoll: 56-44 to Labor (open thread)

Labor and Anthony Albanese ride high in the first Newspoll since the federal election.

The Australian has published the first Newspoll since the federal election, showing Labor opening up a commanding 56-44 lead, compared with a two-party result of 52.1-47.9 at the election. The primary votes are Labor 37% (compared with 32.6% at the election), Coalition 33% (35.7%), Greens 12% (12.2%), One Nation 6% (5.0%) and United Australia Party 2% (4.1%).

Anthony Albanese’s approval rating has shot from 41% before the election to 61%, while his disapproval rating has fallen from 46% to 26%. The former exceeds honeymoon approval ratings recorded by Tony Abbott (47%), Kevin Rudd (59%) and John Howard (45%) upon Newspoll’s return after the three previous changes of government. The net result of plus 35% is the strongest since the early days of Malcolm Turnbull’s prime ministership in November 2015, and previously by Kevin Rudd in October 2009.

Dutton’s opening numbers are 37% approval and 41% disapproval, and he trails Albanese 59-25 as preferred prime minister, the widest gap in Newspoll since the early days of Rudd’s prime ministership in 2008. Debut results for past opposition leaders were 35% approval and 40% disapproval for Anthony Albanese in 2019, 32% and 24% for Bill Shorten in 2013, 40% and 35% for Tony Abbott in 2010, 50% and 25% for Malcolm Turnbull in 2008, 36% and 19% for Brendan Nelson in 2008 and 41% and 10% for Kevin Rudd in 2006. The poll was conducted Wednesday to Saturday from a sample of 1508.

  1. keating is a gift to the greens shows how out off tuch he is his policies helped the shoppies with there policy off p bargining some conditions in order to cut wagis plus he started the myth that labor lost nsw in 20111 because robbertson and head office maybi not based on beliefs stood up foor the rank and file against moris yemmas undemocratick sail off electrisity after conference aposed it he thoughe tripodi and obead plus 2gb could could egnore his party room and force it through then keating and his allies started the myth that kk and the geting rid of emma caused the defeat but it wasthere influence under emma that started decline

  2. now the perettet government is even moore cerupt then labor never was and even though yemma was closer to tripodi then kenearly ever was his been turned in to a hearow while kenearley was distroyed buy hadley and buy 2gb hadleys only dislike off perrettet is that unlike the other nsw premiers he does not do what 2gb wants and takes on bord the publics view all though the barilarowjob does not pass the pub test but sore aires is scapegoas if liberals were smar kean is obvious deputy choice desbite hadleys support forr morrisons state faction leader elliott

  3. With today’s climate bill it seems we’re talking floor.

Interesting that Wilkie put in an amendment for larger cuts.

Let’s see if policy will be informed by competency instead of colour coded spreadsheets going forward, and impact on energy services.

I guess socialist Liebor/ salon socialist Libs lite have absorbed lessons from Nbnco, as in talking maximums Mbps in 2007, Gbps in 2010.
Should have used Infra Aus, carriers, tech vendors.
Of course they were only the architects of NBN, off balance promoted by academics/ ‘crats and gen Ys , even ACCC, the builders of nbn were the Fibs/ Nats from 2013, and by now the assets are worth $10B to $30B, equity and loan dollars are $60+B, and it is still a matter of overdue, overpriced and still no reliable Gbps over here.
(Aussat was offloaded with something like three times debt over equity.)

Then again ignoring the OECD eg seems to come naturally to the major parties, especially when it comes to regulatory reform, competition in infra and services (especially in metro, subsidise regional and beyond), neutrality of solution.

  4. Seems suprising given finns views but he never liked Guy being a strong michael obrian supporter right until guy won im suprised he did not use his susbention to help obrian take over leadership obrian never publickly critercized his comments on abortion thought thin would triy and stay in party and help obrian chalinge only other option is david daviis but he is in upper house

  5. The only reason guy came back was the get andrews wing lead buy frydenberg pushed foor guy to replace obrian as he did not attack andrews enough foor there liking guys chief backers were james newbery tim smith but guy got rid off smith and frydenberg and the hard right fell out with guy believing he should have backt in smith but now frydenberg is out off politics would obrian bring finn back or maybi hill retire in stead of running with dlp

  6. Don’t mention Tasmania to Victorian Liberals

It was the recruitment of a Tasmanian party executive to the similar position in Victoria (and contrary to advice from some in Tasmania) that saw the Victorian Division robbed of $1.5 million by that individual

Looks like the knives are out and killing season is upon us. Guy could be a massive distraction with a police/IBAC investigations going on, particularly if there more to come out.

Finn could have been free lancing as an act of revenge or someone could have told him to stir the pot.

I have moved my needle to 65% chance of a spill.

Bernie Finn is an extreme crackpot. I’d prefer he was completely ignored by everyone.

The sooner we are free of his and Somyureks presence the better.

  10. Rex – He is a crackpot when it comes to ideas but he managed to survive as the sole Liberal in that area by being pretty savvy with internal Liberal party politics. That is why I suspect that someone within the Liberal party put him up to launching todays attack. It lead the two highest rating news bulletins (and I didn’t see what Nine or Ten had to say).

ABC 7.30 Report – Ferguson tries hard interviewing/ tripping up Chris Bowen.
Bowen rightfully makes her look 3rd rate.

    Not her best work tonight..

..really wish they’d drop the ‘gotchas’…

..on a more positive note, I thought Bowen was ‘pitch perfect’ in his responses, and totally in command of his brief..

  13. Re 730,
Too bad when they melted the previous presenter down for glue they didn’t clean out the editors and producers. That’s where the real rot is at 730.
Hopefully there’s a change of guard soon.

Though sadly, some will make it up the slippery pole and into management.

  14. I wasn’t particularly happy with Bowen’s responses and Ferguson needs better questions.

I’d start with the question: Do you concede that at some point in the future, no new coal mines or coal fired power stations will be proposed?

Follow that with: Exactly how does the mechanisms enacted in your Bill bring forward that date?

  15. According to Bolt on his show tonight, there is a recent study which shows that the Great Barrier Reef has acquired a record covering of coral over the last few years, which he asserts is irrefutable proof that the reef is not being killed off by climate change at all and is in fact thriving.

I’m not knowledgeable enough on these matters to know one way or the other. Would anyone here like to offer an opinion on this claim?

  18. Adam Bandt’s apoplectic diatribe against Labor in recent days getting a reality check…

For the first time in Australian history, a federal environment minister has set the wheels in motion to reject a coal mine.

The Queensland government recommended rejecting Clive Palmer’s proposed coal mine last year
Environment Minister Tanya Plibersek has proposed the rejection of Clive Palmer’s Central Queensland Coal Project on the grounds it is likely to damage the Great Barrier Reef.

The decision remains a “proposal” because a final decision can only be made after 10 days of further consultation, including public comment. But given the wide range of reasons cited by the minister, it is unlikely to be approved.

The planned mining site is just 10 kilometres from the Great Barrier Reef near Rockhampton, and was likely to have contributed to ocean pollution, according to the minister.

“Based on the information available to me at this stage, I believe that the project would be likely to have unacceptable impacts to the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park, and the values of the Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area and National Heritage Place,” Ms Plibersek said.

  21. SMH report re Qld murders
“ prompting a day-long police operation that culminated in five people at a property being taken for questioning“

People are not taken for questioning. Either they are helping voluntarily or they are under arrest on suspicion of having committed a crime.

Swedish election will be interesting. The Tories (aka Moderate party in the local confusing lingo) + the Christian Democrats (not quite the Fred Nile troupe but nearly as batty) decided a few years ago to stop excluding the Pariah party, known bemusingly to voters as the “Sweden Democrats”, an extreme nationalist anti-immigration bunch of largely young thugs who were openly Nazi apologists before they got into parliament in 2010 and decided to window-dress their public rhetoric.

Latest poll has Social Democrats on 31%, Left on 9%, Centre on 6% and Greens on 4% (below threshold, as you note). Together that = 50%. The Moderates are at 20% but trending down in last few months, the racist Pariah front (“S Democrats”on paper) are at 17% but trending down for over 6 months, and the Fred Nile fraternity at 6% and steady. The Liberals have jumped above the Greens recently, up to 6%, but they are less likely than the Moderates to share government with the racist, neo-Nazi Pariah front.

Hard to judge the dynamics from a great distance, but the new Social Dem PM Magdalena Anderrson (installed last Nov) has lifted the Social Dems by 6% since then. An elite swimmer in her youth, she is an economist who has more appeal than Stefan Lofven whom she replaced. With only 5 weeks to go it would be a surprise is she is unable to continue as PM after the election.

Note the Pariah Party vote is basically a racist, anti-immigrant vote. It has dropped somewhat since February, despite the new refugee crisis in Europe caused by Putin’s war. The Pariah party can’t use the crisis to promote their hatred, because the refugees are Caucasian and because not far below their nationalist rhetoric the Pariah party are admirers of Putin.

So, even if the Greens fail to exceed the threshold, the Social Dems will be by far the largest party and it’s hard to imagine not just the Moderates i.e. Tories and Fred Nile namesakes but also the Liberals sharing government with the Pariah party who were clearly shunned by all other parties until 2018.

The consequences of the climate change bill passing today:
    https://www.theguardian.com/australia-news/2022/jun/06/labor-has-set-an-exceptionally-ambitious-target-for-renewable-energy-can-it-be-met

Thanks for this. I hope the Labor government come good for renters in the Budget to enable them to petition their landlords to install solar panels on their roofs. I know that before the election strong representations were made to Chris Bowen to this effect.

  26. “I’m not knowledgeable enough on these matters to know one way or the other. Would anyone here like to offer an opinion on this claim?”

    Bullshit!

  27. well when he was a liberal he was a strong backer of michael obrianwho did not seem to publickly attack finns abortion ppoasts the liberals wanted the election to be a referendum on integrity

  28. Tasmanian liberal party iis now the strongist branch in the country with a stable government desbite being through three premiers had best election result after tasmanian director riped them off and the director resigned vicktorian liberals had no problim with tasmaniania afterfrydenberg staffer returned after morrisons election winn they appointed tasmanian liberal director sam mcqueston to state director after the person who he replaced ript them off

  29. And who has been pre-selected following Finn’s removal?

    His protege

Says it all about the Liberal Party and their membership, conscripted by Bastiaan, his wife and Sukkar

Then you look at their other Candidates

WA result coming up – and they know it

Given that, how much money will the Cormack Directors stump up?

Their excuse last time was that they were repairing their Balance Sheet

Then we get to Teals candidates in what is left of their safe, blue ribbon seats

  30. Robots and AI? nath, scoffed. Typical lack of insight, I say:

Chris McGrath, chief executive of the solar farm builder 5B, exemplifies both the progress and potholes facing the sector. Last week, 5B completed part of a $30m capital raising, which it hopes will allow it to accelerate its world-leading pace of new solar panel deployment.

In May, a team of 10 in Chile’s Atacama Desert built a solar farm using prefabricated panels at the pace of 1.1 megawatts of capacity per day. With the use of robots, 5B expects that can be increased 10-fold.
