Newspoll: 56-44 to Labor (open thread)

Labor and Anthony Albanese ride high in the first Newspoll since the federal election.

The Australian has published the first Newspoll since the federal election, showing Labor opening up a commanding 56-44 lead, compared with a two-party result of 52.1-47.9 at the election. The primary votes are Labor 37% (compared with 32.6% at the election), Coalition 33% (35.7%), Greens 12% (12.2%), One Nation 6% (5.0%) and United Australia Party 2% (4.1%).

Anthony Albanese’s approval rating has shot from 41% before the election to 61%, while his disapproval rating has fallen from 46% to 26%. The former exceeds honeymoon approval ratings recorded by Tony Abbott (47%), Kevin Rudd (59%) and John Howard (45%) upon Newspoll’s return after the three previous changes of government. The net result of plus 35% is the strongest since the early days of Malcolm Turnbull’s prime ministership in November 2015, and previously by Kevin Rudd in October 2009.

Dutton’s opening numbers are 37% approval and 41% disapproval, and he trails Albanese 59-25 as preferred prime minister, the widest gap in Newspoll since the early days of Rudd’s prime ministership in 2008. Debut results for past opposition leaders were 35% approval and 40% disapproval for Anthony Albanese in 2019, 32% and 24% for Bill Shorten in 2013, 40% and 35% for Tony Abbott in 2010, 50% and 25% for Malcolm Turnbull in 2008, 36% and 19% for Brendan Nelson in 2008 and 41% and 10% for Kevin Rudd in 2006. The poll was conducted Wednesday to Saturday from a sample of 1508.

  1. Not unexpected given the steady stewardship of Albo and his ministers since the election and the sheer lunacy of Dutton and his loons.
That’s all we need for the next couple of years. Steady, sensible progress.

  2. From the last thread, Re: Domicron’s Sunday night assassination of Petinos, and his statement:

“ … after some further matters concerning her were brought to my attention. …”

Will anyone in the MSM have the gumption to actually ask what the ‘further matters’ were? Will Minns?

  3. Splendid news, dependent upon how the bow bends, the mop flops, and the cooky crumbles. This will really test how Dutton reacts to the “Voice”.

  4. Cracker of a bounce, that one.

Also, the it looks suspiciously like William wanted to cut the trouser talk short.

  5. Terrific numbers for Albo. I was surprised he didn’t do better as LOTO, especially the Dissatisfaction figures which seemed too high to make sense to me.

  6. Wait till October. Lars predicted it would be peak Albo in October. He may have said October 21 but we know the old fellow simply confused his years.

  7. I take it you have some insights on Eleni AE.
She seems a photogenic airhead, albeit a nonentity out of central casting, a symbol of a cactus government, where the dregs get a sinecure before they’re all booted out.

So which position has Petinos been offered?

    Appears missionary!

  9. If Dutton wants to advance his cause, his best chance would be to back Labor on the “Voice.” But he won’t, his former occupation anathema to such.

  11. It is not just the honeymoon period, Labor have made few mistakes and have been governing effectively.

The first real mistake only happened this week unfortunately it is an absolute doozy a referendum doomed to fail for a change to the constitution that won’t even help the people it is intended too. Madness.

The next one will be very interesting.

  12. Now that’s worth a couple of XXXX’s and Bundy.

Great to see Steelydan hasn’t lost his sense of humour.

With all his strings plucked he only got one thing left to pluck…..

Love youse bludgers and top notch to be called Aussie again.

If one can avoid – in my experience – it’s probably better not to respond to Labor trolls such as cat.

    Mavis,
Generally I don’t respond to pompous windbags such as yourself. However, you’re out of control tonight. You don’t even comprehend the definition of a troll. You’re just some old man who throws around words like that without understanding them.

I’m not going to take what you say seriously, no matter how you style yourself as an arbiter of this blog. The only one who has the eminence and right to do that is Mr Bowe. And he’s the one who threw Greensborough Growler and Bushfire Bill out and no amount of whining about it by you will bring them back. Unless he’s good and ready to. Same goes for me. If he wants to turf me, then I’ll be gone. You won’t have any say in it. These are just the facts. So give us a break, Mavis. And get over yourself.

  14. The referendum proposal needs a little polishing (For example, removing the woke “First nations” terminology will help it get wider support) but it is about all that needs to be placed in the constitution. Albo has taken a fairly conservative approach to it and kept it the bare minimum. Everything can basically be done by legalisation and the referendum is merely for show.

And that is why it might fail. Referendums only pass when there is a clear need for a change but this is a symbolic change. Because it is essentially an unnecessary step from a legal point, if the opposition choose to oppose it in its current form it will be able to make a case that might see the vote fail.

And I know I am about to be told that it will be political suicide for the LNP to oppose it, but they basically can’t fall any further than where they are now and already headed. They do need to regain the voters who went to One nation, the UAP or Liberal Democrats etc. in order to be the Party of conservative Australia and opposing the referendum might be an issue they could use to do that. Yes, the “teal” movement is a threat to them on the left but the fragmentation of the block is a existential threat of great importance.

What will also be interesting is to see how the more militant indigenous advocates react; If they come out opposing it on the basis that it doesn’t provide enough, then it will add ammo to the No camp.

I don’t see actually failing but I don’t see it being an easy vote as most of the chattering class think.

Just thought I’d check back before I went to bed, and yep, you just can’t help yourself, Mavis. Sad.

Did the Morrison Government have any stuff ups Taylormade?

Maybe not, but they did have lots of achievements apparently.

  20. From the previous thread…

    Re wave power
    https://www.abc.net.au/news/2022-07-31/wave-power-generator-supplying-king-island-with-electricity/101282070

Wave power has several problems. The first is the energy density. There’s possibly too much power in water. It will rip out or destroy anything not robust enough. The second is the harsh environment, including corrosive sea water, clogging and abrasive sand, and biological fouling and attack. The third is that it is on and under water, so it’s harder to get to and maintain the equipment. The fourth is that it is not on land, which means you have to run and maintain electrical cables into the water. None of the issues are insurmountable, but they add to the cost.

The blowhole design described in the article seems to overcome the first obstacle and possibly the second. The clever bit seems to be converting wave energy into airflow, and using that to spin turbines. It seems that idea is worth pursuing.

    (Great Newspoll for Labor tonight!)

  21. Comparing apples and apples, comparing the previous Newspoll with tonight’s gives us:

    ALP 53.5 v 46.5 LNP May 20
    ALP 56.0 v 44.0 LNP July 31
    https://www.pollbludger.net/fed2022/bludgertrack2022/

Albanese’s honeymoon numbers, by surpassing Abbott, Rudd and Howard, make for interesting speculation. Thinking about those, and acknowledging that a population of four is crap stats, nevertheless it’s interesting that Labor PMs enjoy a greater honeymoon approval than Coalition PMs.

  22. Good work team Albo and Co,
This is a good buffer for the rate rise coming this month, thankfully everyone in Australia is blaming those on Lowe. But CPI and Wage prices are government issues now. And power prices!!!!

So in that last two months,
World Tour repairing relations with everyone, Improved relations with China, Climate Change sorted, Better natural disaster response. And now the voice.

Things are happening quickly at the moment, I wonder how they will keep up with the pace of it.

  23. Buyers’ relief at work in the polls. Morrison, the worst PM since Tony Abbott (who remains the worst since Federation) has vanished, as if swallowed up by the earth. The yoke has been broken. Excellent. Albo is on song.

At the same time, and not in the least surprisingly, the Lying Reactionaries are telling themselves they lost because they were not sufficiently right wing. Not many voters will be attracted by that.

Albo is putting the question to his opponents: Will they embrace hope and reason? Will the agree to recognition and a Voice? Or will they stew in their resentments?

Can the Lying Reactionaries detach themselves from the politics of rejection? Maybe Albo knows something about Dutton that has eluded the rest of the country. I hope so.

  24. First Newspoll of the Albanese era and, as I expected, it’s good for the Government. Of course, we’re deep in the proverbial honeymoon period and one would be foolish to think this even slightly resembles a snapshot of the next election but it’s still good because it kills the implied talking point among some in the Opposition that Albanese is somehow an accidental PM or that they’re only in government by scraping over the line and don’t have any real legitimacy. Voters clearly disagree and are willing to give them a chance.

The Government should definitely allow this to boost their confidence knowing they have a real (political) mandate to govern (but should avoid getting arrogant and believing these numbers make them untouchable.) And, on the other side, the Opposition might want to rethink their “We didn’t really” denialist approach that has been guiding their attitude and talking points in the last couple of months.

  25. Albo has the opportunity to forever lay to rest the false claims made about Labor and the economy. The Lying Reactionaries made an utter hash of pubic finance and inflation. Labor will get on top of these things. They will restore integrity and value for money to fiscal policy. They will show they know how to run the country and enact necessary reforms at the same time. At last.

  26. B.S. Fairman at 11.01 pm

If you think the LNP have no further to fall, then wait awhile, as they say in WA.

If you think there is no legal problem with the Constitution presuming a racist fiction (that the original owners of Australia could be ignored as they would die out, or be bred out, in the genocidal view of A.O. Neville), some reading may be in order.

However, the main problem is political not legal. In 2004 Latham and Howard conspired to abolish ATSIC. Putting the Voice in the Constitution is designed to ensure such total arrogance toward Indigenous Peoples is never repeated.

A great result considering the challenges Albo has faced since the election. People REALLY wanted to get rid of Morrison!

  28. NSW Premier Dominic Perrottet has sacked his small business and fair trading minister Eleni Petinos after allegations she bullied workers emerged during a horror week for his government.

The premier said he had confidence in Petinos last week after media reports alleged the MP berated staff with offensive language including the words “retarded” and “stupid”, triggering the departure of multiple staffers since she was promoted in December.

But in a statement issued on Sunday night, Perrottet said he had spoken with Petinos after “some further matters concerning her were brought to my attention” and moved to stand her down immediately.

“In light of these matters, Ms Petinos’ service as a Minister will cease with immediate effect, and I will write to the Governor in this regard tomorrow,” Perrottet said.

    https://www.smh.com.au/politics/nsw/eleni-petinos-sacked-following-bullying-allegations-20220731-p5b63d.html

Ayres needs to go too. It’s clear from everything that has emerged over the Barilaro affair the past week or so that Ayres has misled the public (and possibly the parliament) over just how much he did know about the appointment. Including his role in ensuring Barilaro was offered the job.

  29. Was expecting 54-46 to Labor

This is not good news for the corrupt lib/nats and their propaganda media units , if the public is still ignoring their propaganda

  30. PvO and Riminton’s podcast was great listening yesterday with both musing over SfM’s post politics career.

His unpopularity means there aren’t likely to be many board positions opening for him. Ditto the former PM roles of smoothing pathways internationally seeing as he was universally hated overseas, esp by strategic nations such as China.

Speaking gigs were also discussed, the most likely that will open to him being with the religious evangelical happy clappers. Although the consensus was that these speakers are usually charismatic, something that Morrison is not.

    https://podcasts.apple.com/au/podcast/episode-125-hello-again/id1459844929?i=1000571549714

  31. Now those were very appealing numbers in last night’s Newspoll, particularly given the economic scenario painted by the media, nice way to start the day.

  32. Torchbearer @ #43 Monday, August 1st, 2022 – 6:18 am

Q: People REALLY wanted to get rid of Morrison!

Morrison who? most people will be thinking……has a PM ever been forgotten so quickly?

I think the electorate went with Morrison: ‘Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me.’

In 2019 they believed his daggy dad image projection. Then they thought he would just get on with governing after the election. But he just didn’t. He kept going with the stunts and the self-promotion. He brought parliament together the least of just about any Prime Minister. Whenever there was a crisis in his government he’d try to send it down a black hole with a Gaetjens ‘Review’, hopeful that the electorate would forget about it and move on. And when a real crisis came along, the pandemic, he flubbed it. Not to mention the existential global crisis of Climate Change.

The electorate hadn’t moved on, they just went to look for their baseball bats.

  33. I’m very much appreciating not have having to listen to Morrison’s lies and observe his arrogant and supercilious expressions on a daily basis. May he never surface publicly again.
