Newspoll: 54-46 to Labor

Newspoll continues to present a stable picture on voting intention, crediting Labor with a two-party lead a few points stronger than ahead of the greater pollster failure of 2019.

The Australian reports on an unusually timed release from Newspoll, although the field work period from the poll of Tuesday to Friday is only slightly different from the usual Wednesday to Saturday. The poll finds no change since last week on two-party preferred, with Labor retaining a lead of 54-46 from primary votes of Labor 38% (down one), Coalition 35% (steady), Greens 11% (steady), One Nation 6% (up one) and United Australia Party 3% (down one). Scott Morrison is up a point on approval to 42% and down two on disapproval to 53%, while Anthony Albanese is down three to 38% and up two to 49%. Morrison’s lead as preferred prime minister is in from 44-42 to 43-42. The sample for the poll was 1532.

  1. I doubt she is in trouble. Might lose a fair chunk of the existing margin, but 14% is a big margin. The push for independents is mostly coming from centralist Liberal type voters who are a bit light on the ground in Fowler.

Have to love this baloney from Katherine Murph at The Guardian

Because she believes the “strategists are not lying”, the contest is much closer than the published polls suggest. {Similar ‘strategists” made the same claims about the SA state election recently and we know how that turned out- but lets put that to one side}.

So, “the way soft voters break will determine the outcome, pushing either party into a win, loss or minority government”.

Based then on what she believes, she comes to the conclusion that

..”the combatant who wins this week will win the campaign”.

And what brilliant strategy is SfM going to use to “win the campaign” in the last week ?

Well “He’s executing his strategy to hold on – a strategy that peaked on Friday when Morrison distanced himself from himself”.

    https://www.theguardian.com/australia-news/2022/may/13/if-the-metropolitan-moderates-are-wiped-out-next-week-the-liberals-must-learn-the-right-lesson-from-defeat.

I used to have some respect for Katherine Murphy’s journalism, once upon a time. These days she imbibes the ‘click bait’ press corp bubble of a election hanging in the balance and any stumble in the last week by Albo costing him the election because Scomo has come up with the brilliant strategy of trying to say I hate myself too. Come on Kathryn, try again, really.

Of course you have all the facts to refute her. 😆 😆 😆

  3. Zoomster

Thank you so much for attending the farewell for zoe/lizzie, and representing her PB family.
She would have really appreciated it, as do we!

  4. Sandman,
i want what Katherine Murphy’s smoking because she’s not gripping onto reality. 2 Million people have already voted. Whoever won last week counts as much as this week and scomo is busy comparing himself to a dump truck. And trying to soften that image by referring to his wife, who just thinks it’s a family trait to be an oafish lout.

FMD, the guardians good name is brought down by putting her in such a prominent position of influence.

  5. Albanese’s birth and family background – wiki:

[‘Albanese was born on 2 March 1963 at St Margaret’s Hospital in the Sydney suburb of Darlinghurst. He is the son of Carlo Albanese and Maryanne Ellery. His mother was an Australian of Irish descent, while his father was from Barletta, Italy. His parents met in March 1962 on a voyage from Sydney to Southampton on the Sitmar Line’s TSS Fairsky, where his father worked as a steward, but did not continue their relationship afterwards, going their separate ways.’]

[‘Italian Citizenship is based upon the principle of “jus sanguinis” (blood right) meaning that a child born of an Italian father or mother is an Italian citizen regardless of place of birth.’]

    Renouncing Italian citizenship:

    https://conssydney.esteri.it/consolato_sydney/en/i-servizi/per-i-cittadini/cittadinanza/rinuncia.html

It goes without saying that Albanese would have renounced his right
    to Italian citizenship(?).

  6. Mavis,
Even if he hadn’t and he get’s bounced, I figure labor have at least 76 in the bag. If Albo get’s us there and then we end up with Chalmers or Clare, then happy accidents.

But I agree it’s a stretch to think this hasn’t been sorted, especially considering this chaos from 2016 on wards section 44 has caused.

Yes Snappy, do we have an agreed name?

Or am I now a member of WTFONIPBPC? 🙂

1 week left until we hope the Australian public sees fit to see this most incompetent, mendacious and morally corrupt government removed.

I’m ready for next Sat night!

  8. Apparently Morrison turned up at a fire-station to be photo-opped with firefighters, but they left an hour earlier when they heard he was coming. The chief said they had been called out. Psycho wasn’t happy.

  9. Sohar,
That’s perfect, I don’t think anyone who works hard days like firey’s or nurses want to be props for that tools advancement.

  10. Looks like the housing policy is….

Let boomers sell to downsize and move the tax free profits into super, so they don’t loose a pension. FFS…. Do the boomers really need any more help from the tax payer?

This really is saving the furniture policy….

  11. I agree with the Sandman, Murf is speaking through her hat. This is not a horse race where the jockey pulls out one last whack of the whip and the poor old horse( us) gets him over the line. This result is three years in the making and this government is a talentless lot lead by a shyster. Surely Murferoo gets that?

    So all boomers are wealthy?

The name “Whatever-the-Fuck-Our-Name-is-Pollbludger-Pissheads-Club” has, IIRC, been determined by Upnorth via “executive decision.”

I had no idea what that was, as I thought we were an autonomous collective, in which we each take it in turns to act as a sort of executive officer of the week…maybe Upnorth is this week’s executive officer. Along with every other week.

  14. Kjon34@kjon1230 · 10h
So this ship Spud is so worried about has been in Perth harbour for the last two weeks having some repairs done. I could say more but l don’t want to be sent to the sin bin

  15. ‘Let boomers sell to downsize and move the tax free profits into super, so they don’t loose a pension. FFS…. Do the boomers really need any more help from the tax payer?’

Good thing they are going to lose as, wanting to buy an apartment, I don’t want cashed up competition inflating the prices.

But surely there has to be more? Something more basic like access to super for deposits.

  16. For me personally, I dont just want a simple Labor win. This needs to be an emphatic rejection of everything the “new” Liberal party and ScoMo stands for.

This needs to be a bloodbath. The quivalent of the Game of Thrones Red Wedding episode.

    Re membership…

My understanding is that the Whatever-the-Fuck-Our-Name-is-Pollbludger-Pissheads-Club is infinitely inclusive, having no application form or published membership requirements.

Upnorth may be called upon to make an executive about these matters as well, to be put to the bi-weekly management meeting.

I’d find it incredulous if Albanese has not renounced his Italian citizenship. If I’m wrong on this, Labor’s in deep shite. Let’s hope it’s just a beat-up. I don’t know where the rumour came from but
there’s nothing about it in the MSM – I think.

  19. Morrison’s last-ditch attempt for reelection:

[‘Prime Minister Scott Morrison will on Sunday make his final set-piece pitch to Australian voters with a superannuation policy to encourage Australians to downsize their homes in a last-ditch attempt to halt his campaign’s stumbling momentum.

Morrison will formally launch his party’s campaign at the Brisbane Convention Centre before Liberal luminaries including former prime minister John Howard as he attempts to shore up key marginal seats and convince undecided voters to give him another term in office.

There was fury in government ranks at the publication of the story, which sent the Coalition further into damage control and resulted in the party pulling plans to provide this masthead with details of Sunday’s centrepiece announcement ahead of time.’]

Isn’t the moral of the Red Wedding,

if you’re going to take out your opposition, you better make sure you take them all out.

  22. The Liberals recent leaders have all been from Sydney, but I don’t think that represents a Sydney bias on their party. I think it represents the sheer failure of other state branches to produce much in the way of quality. The Victorian Liberals have been able to make one term of government in recent years, the Queensland right have been able to make two terms of government in a longer period.

The lack of leaders from WA is certainly an eastern bias in the party and the quality of the party need not be further examined, and (Abetz aside) the Tasmanian party seems to be healthy and well-centred but Tasmanian voters and the number of electors don’t make it easy to produce a federal leader. I’m not quite sure if SA falls more into the WA or the Tasmanian box.

  23. Morrison visited a bakery yesterday in the seat of McEwen. Seat currently held by Rob Mitchell and formerly held by Fran Bailey.

Wouldnt be surprised if UAP get some votes here.

  24. So now the internal Liberal factions are spinning different stories to 9fax – what to believe?

Before Sunday’s campaign launch, four senior Liberals MPs and party strategists, who asked not to be named so they could discuss the government’s electoral prospects, said it was increasingly difficult to see how the government could win 76 seats and form majority government.

The quartet all said victory was still possible with a week to go in the campaign but suggested the Coalition could have to look to one or two crossbenchers to form government.

Internally, there is a “briefing war” taking place within the Coalition, with people in Morrison’s Centre Right faction presenting a more upbeat picture of the government’s prospects – including that outer suburban seats such as McEwen in Victoria and Greenway in NSW are still a chance of flipping to the Liberals.

But MPs from the moderate and conservative factions are more downbeat and suggest that seats including Reid, Bennelong, Chisholm and Boothby will fall to Labor, a view that aligns with that of ALP strategists, who also believe North Sydney, Swan and Pearce in WA, and the Queensland seat of Brisbane are line ball.

All the Liberals who spoke to The Sun-Herald and The Sunday Age agreed that Parramatta, in NSW, and Corangamite, in Victoria, were still in play and could be won by the government.

One Liberal MP, a conservative, said Tasmania and Queensland still looked OK for the government, with a good chance no seats would change hands, but “NSW and WA are not super confident”.

  25. William Bowe @ #1117 Saturday, May 14th, 2022 – 9:08 pm

The Sunday Times polls are a replay of the Utting Research polls conducted in March, and have Labor leading 53-47 in Swan and 52-48 in Pearce, but trailing 55-45 in Hasluck and 54-46 in Tangney.

    https://thewest.com.au/politics/election/federal-election-2022-poll-alp-on-track-to-win-swan-and-pearce-but-hope-remains-for-liberals–c-6773134

Sounds like the McGowan factor has dissipated a bit in WA. 55-45 to the Libs in Hasluck seems hard to believe but we’ll soon see.

  26. This is the moment they libs and their backers are desperately hoping for an unforced error. Let’s hope labor go negative online and positive on TV.

  27. A bit more detail:

[‘Under a current policy, when Australians have reached the eligible age of 65 they can contribute up to $300,000 from the proceeds of the sale of a house into their superannuation fund. The policy is due to change to people over 60 from July 1. Couples can contribute up to $600,000.

On Sunday, the Coalition will announce an expansion of this program to people aged 55 and over, up to the personal transfer cap of $1.6 million.

The policy applies to the principal place of residence for a single person or a couple who must downsize after selling their home.’]
    – SMH.

Early days, but these policies don’t seem to be a game-changer, as they don’t assist younger prospective home buyers. Perhaps there’s more to come?

  28. DB Cooper,
The standard you walk past is the standard you accept.
Murphy didn’t report on Barnaby’s cheating when he was dealing with his section 44 stuff. That’s a choice.

  29. DB Cooper, wrote “Murphy might not be perfect, but to call her a “pro Tory Hack” is just insane.”

Where were you during the Lucien Eye love ins?

  30. Re Hansluck I’m in the seat right now visiting family and even die hard ALPers are not hopefully, citing Ken Wyatt as being a ‘nice guy’ etc. Thabkfully the ‘nice guy’ vibe won’t save Josh in Kooyong imo!

  31. “i.e. She doesn’t always write pieces that you agree with.”

No, as a rule I tend not to agree with Tory boosters a great deal.

  32. clem attlee @ #1137 Saturday, May 14th, 2022 – 9:27 pm

I never got all the fuss over Murphy. As a ‘journalist’ she has zero insight. Just another pro Tory hack.

I think she’s alright, wouldn’t call her pro-Tory, but she gives them more credit then they are due maybe for the sake of being seen as impartial and/or keeping it looking competitive to retain reader eyeballs.

  33. I tend to agree with whoever above said that most journalists and commentators do not want stick their necks out and declare for Labor after the upset of 2019.

We aren’t the only ones 2019 ‘PTSD’. The terror of history repeating, and the attendant loss of credibility, is making everyone leery. The fact that Newspoll is confident of their methodology enough to churn out so many polls of late gives me a measure of confidence too. Same with Ipsos.

I am surprised that Guardian/Essential hasn’t been issuing polls does give me pause though. I suppose it now depends on timing?

  34. A non issue for Albanese

“Mr Albanese said he had dealt with the allegation many times. “The circumstances of my birth is that I had a single parent, there is a single parent legally on my birth certificate,” he said on Monday.”
