Miscellany: NT poll, federal parliament seat entitlements, 2019 election book

Various recent electoral news happenings, including a new poll that suggests the looming Northern Territory election will be, if nothing else, more competitive than the last.

The Eden-Monaro by-election has naturally consumed my energies of late, and I’m continuing to follow the late count through the post below, although the result is no longer in doubt. There appears to be no Essential Research poll this week, which leaves me with the following to hang a new open thread off:

• A local environmental concern has published results of a uComms robo-poll of the Darwin area ahead of the Northern Territory election, to be held on August 22. Including responses to the forced-response follow-up for the 13% who were initially undecided, the poll records Labor on 39.3% and the Country Liberal Party on 31.0%, compared with 47.9% and 33.6% respectively in Darwin seats last time. The new Territory Alliance party of former CLP Chief Minister Terry Mills is on 13.7% and the Greens, who only ran in three seats last time, were on 7.2%. The poll was conducted on June 29 from a sample of 699.

• The determination of state and territory seat entitlements for the next parliamentary term was reached on Friday, with a conclusion that was long known in advance and discussed here at length: namely, that Victoria will gain another new seat while Western Australia and the Northern Territory will each lose one, bringing the total number of House of Representatives back to a more typical 150 from its current 151.

• The Australian National University’s regular post-election review of the federal election, entitled Morrison’s Miracle: The 2019 Australian Federal Election, contains 24 chapters of analysis of every facet of the campaign and result, and is available as a free download.

  1. I missed this piece of merde from Meher:

“ You Labor die hards on PB cherish the “look over there” and “what about him” schools of argument, don’t you?

I quite clearly wasn’t talking about the NSW land clearing laws”

Well I clearly was from the get go. So was ‘the hashtag dude’.

    ‘Look over there’? ffs!

The Libs and the Greens have both perfected ‘look over there, Labor. Boo’ as a standard MO. With the 4 factions of our what passes for our media piling on for good measure as well.

The land leading laws, the cutting of the NSW public service, the protection laws for a feral invasive species, the debauchery over water in the MDB form a veritable Ring Cycle of corruption and nuclear level bad government. Worse still, if the Greens get their way with their ‘Stop Adani’ redux anti labor wedge in Queensland history will repeat itself in the sunshine state next year.

We are talking about objectively the worst of the worst and corrupt government decisions in living memory here.

But guess what? Eddie Obied tried time lift some of the State’s silverware back in 2009. Henry Tsang scammed the party at a Chinese dinner in 2015 and a few Labor branches were stacked in Melbourne’s western suburbs. Worst of all, a security guard had a dirty root whilst on quarantine duty.

So. Obviously the ‘Labor bad’ stuff is the only newsworthy stuff, and us ‘partisans’ are just engaging in ‘look over there’ and ‘what aboutism’ when trying to focus your feeble mind on the main game.

    # Koala killer Has cut through.

    # Koala killer is true

In the total absence of an independent media # Koala killer is about all we have to try to get the genuinely feckless to wake the fuck up and look at what is actually happening.

You’ve obviously never haggled for a hotel in low season.

It’s a lot more than a hotel room. Security has to be paid for, and no longer can it be some dude from a private security firm.

It is now part of the cost of coming back and it will be for a while.

  4. Some previous Members for Werriwa reached high office. The current Member, Anne Stanley tweeted this tonight…

“Last week I had dinner at the Crossroads Hotel at Casula. I have followed today’s medical advice from NSW Health and I have been tested and am now in 14 days self-isolation.

If you also visited the Crossroads… instagram.com/p/“

A bit harsh on people who are already out of the Country.

I don’t disagree so much for people who choose to leave now.

    Yes it is.

But I think it has been shown that trained resources are stretched and private security firms are not up to the task.

  8. “Foreign policy will look drastically different if Joe Biden defeats President Trump in November, advisers tell Axios — starting with a Day One announcement that the U.S. is re-entering the Paris Climate Agreement and new global coordination of the coronavirus response.

The big picture: If Trump’s presidency started the “America First” era of withdrawal from global alliances, Biden’s team says his presidency would be the opposite: a re-engagement with the world and an effort to rebuild those alliances — fast.”

I agree with Victoria, unlike the Black Wiggle who Peg could readily support – Adam Bandt has been a severe downgrade, as evidenced by the call for an independent enquiry into the Andrews government locking down the housing commission towers.

Did Bandt say anything about the 22 cases in Carlton towers reported today?

Not that the laborite cabal of PB would care for the facts before saying anything

Adam and Ellen posted a vid of themselves down at the testing centre for the Carlton public housing days ago, promoting tenants getting tested and working for better support regarding public housing tenants. You’re days behind that story it seems.

Seeming to get an appreciative response from their constituents

Ah, so the old Good Cop, Bad Cop routine?

  11. Trump is fucked on those figures. He wont be able to have his stupid rallies as the last one was a COVID petri dish. Their cases might not have even peaked by November. There will be 200,000 dead by then.

  12. “ Trump is fucked on those figures.“

    Why?

The 40% who still approve of him are mainly in red states or swing states. They also probably make up a majority of folk who will actually turn up and vote in said swing states. His base hasn’t slipped away. They will vote.

And no one has even mentioned the wildfires in Arizona and Hurricanes in New Hampshire brought on by an acceleration in the effects of Climate Change on America.

Honestly, the way Putin, Xi, Trump, Erdogan, Orban, Bolsonaro and all the other minor authoritarian potentates are behaving with the world they want to possess, all they’ll have left by the time they get it is a smouldering wreck.

  14. “I think QLD went too early on opening borders. Time will tell.”

Definitely and if the NSW outbreak gets materially bigger I expect the border will be closed pronto.

Because, judging from the pubs in my neck of the woods, a Qld cluster would be quite possible. Satutday night they were completely packed with no serious attempt ar social distancing at some of them.

The Republican Voters Against Trump will bring him down. He lucked out last time, the Stephen Bradbury of American Presidential elections. Lightning doesn’t strike in the same place twice.

  16. “ The Republican Voters Against Trump will bring him down.”

Bless you C@t. I thought a belief in magical creatures left the building when Pegasus departed.

    Republican Voters Against Trump. Lols.

  17. Pegasus – if you’re reading, let me add my voice to the others who have requested you to continue posting. I don’t always see things exactly the way that you do, but I’m appalled at the egocentricity of some posters who apparently think that no opinion other than their own can be legitimately expressed. My suggestion would be to continue to post but resolutely don’t engage at all with the mini-Trumps. They’re not worth it.

  18. Victoria and BW – thank you that was very helpful.

It seems there is a national project – ColoSSoS (Collaboration on Sewage Surveillance of SARS-COV-2) run by “Water Research Australia”:

    https://www.waterra.com.au/research/communities-of-interest/covid-19/

ColoSSoS had a subscription phase that ended May 31, and presumably they met their subscription target (100k) so they’re underway. Most of the major water authorities appear to be involved. It would be a good idea to ask the Commonwealth CMO what progress has been made

  21. I think the 2016 anti-Trump vote was largely neutralised by the vicious “Crooked Hillary” campaign. So many people were decieved into thinking they must each be as bad as the other.

After four years of Trump, that dog will no longer hunt. I suspect this time the anti-Trump sentiment is more visceral, and these people will be motivated to get out and vote.

Having tipped his re-election for most of the last four years, I now think he’ll lose comfortably.
