Essential Research: coronavirus and bushfires

A new poll registers fears of a second coronavirus wave and prolonged economic slowdown, and finds concern about climate change still at a high pitch.

The Guardian reports this week’s Essential Research poll has still more results on coronavirus, together with some findings on climate change. On the former count, the poll found 63% rating a second wave of coronavirus as restrictions are eased as very likely or quite likely, with only 13% rating it very unlikely; more than 60% expected international travel restrictions to remain for between one and two years; 70% thought it would take between one and two years for employment to recover; 60% expected a prolonged impact on the housing market; more than 60% expected a vaccine would be developed “over the next few years”; and 58% that the population would build resistance through exposure over that time. Despite it all, 45% said they felt very or somewhat positive about the next 12 months compared with 33% for very or somewhat negative.

On climate change, 52% now think Australia is not doing enough, down eight on November, with 25% holding the contrary view, up three. Forty-two per cent said they were now more concerned about climate change than they were a year ago, with a further 46% saying they were no more or less concerned. Full results from the poll will be published later today. (UPDATE: Full report here).

Insiders had 600,000 viewers in 2019 and a top 10 rated show.

Since David Speers took over, its fallen to 328,000. Almost 1/2 the viewers in 6 months.

I suspect this person is comparing national apples with five-city metro oranges. The 328,000 is certainly a five-city metro figure — all the comparable figures I can find for last year are about the same.

Here’s how not to win from opposition

“WA government face hurdle to pass legislation to stop puppy farming

“The Liberal opposition are currently not supporting the Dog Amendment (Stop Puppy Farming), despite what the state government has described as “overwhelming support” from the community.”

Hmm, let me think…The Puppy Farmers are independent-minded small business men and women operating in the free market? Otherwise known as Liberal Party donors.

  3. I watched Insiders a week or so ago for the first time in maybe eight months. Lenore Taylor looked like she’d either been crying or was about to cry – I really don’t know what was going on but it was most off-putting so I turned over.

  4. c@tmomma: “Look, I know you’re trying to sound passive aggressive and all in support of Clare(or is it that you are looking for any port in a storm to diss Laber?”

I’m not looking to diss Labor. I am always keen to see an effective Labor Party with strong representation at the top from the Right faction. I look at Federal Labor in 2020 and there aren’t a lot of strong performers from either faction. Albo is far better than Shorten, but is nothing special. Penny Wong and Tony Burke are strong. Beyond those three, you’ve got Chalmers and Keneally, who are massively overrated IMO (particularly Keneally, who I see as a loose cannon) and a bunch of time-servers from Marles downward.

Meanwhile, you have two very smart, very impressive performers in Clare O’Neill and Ed Husic who are more or less hidden out of view.

“Whatever), but she only came into parliament in 2013 and is already in the Outer (as you so dismissively define it) Shadow Ministry and will, without a shadow of a doubt be a Minister one day. FYI, Clare is quite happy to be earning her spurs atm. Numerous people have asked her and that is the reply she has given.”

Surely you’re joking. Far from being happy to wait around and earn her spurs (which translates as taking her place in the queue of time servers), Clare O’Neil made a strong push for the Deputy Leadership last year. And then – in a more subtle way than was done to Laurie Brereton at the infamous NSW ALP conference in 1986, Clare seemed to have been taken into a back room and advised that she was to tell the media that Richard Marles would clearly make a much better Deputy than her. And so she withdrew.

  5. I just found out that Cate McGregor used to be the Malcolm McGregor that used to get so passionate on Barrie Cassidy’s Last Shout. Am I the last to know this?

    Yes

Having listened to him a few times on RN, the only people he doesn’t like are atheists. Pretty much if he doesn’t like someone, or if they do something bad, then they’re an atheist.”

That guy comes across as one of the most arrogant and objectionable people in the Australian media. He appeared on The Drum once alongside Peter Fitzsimons and tore into Fitz in the rudest way you could ever imagine: to the point of being totally embarrassing. I’m no fan of Fitz’s whatsoever, but nobody deserves to be treated like that.

I’ve only listened to his RN show with Waleed once or twice but I remember thinking that they made Phillip Adams seem humble by comparison: which is a considerable achievement.

I live around the corner from where this “raid” took place . The msm outlets were camped across the road with cameras at the ready from early AM . Another Costello Stokes Morrison production of take-out-the-trash Friday. Coincidentally just one week out from #EdenMonaro election

  10. Back on the Covid thing, the only state I’ve seen report “historical” cases from serology is WA. Is anyone else doing that?

  11. Are the Corbynistas, not satisfied with the biggest defeat since the Great Depression, now seeking to white-ant Starmer?

You can bet your arse they are.

In truth Andrew Bolt is not the problem.
The problem is that a mass-media conglomerate exists that sees content like his, and the division, hate and anger it stirs, as the core of its business model.

“From whom did the Greens accept a donation of $200,000?”

If they don’t meet the definition of Deep State then I don’t know who does.

But the Greens have the Green.

Bandt doing the unspeakable ,talking out of both sides of his mouth ?”

    What’s he doing?

  16. One thing has been playing on mind today re the ASIO raids.

If ASIO was so concerned about possible national security issues why would they not have offered the NSW leader and perhaps the Federal leader a formal briefing about a member of state labor caucus and their concerns weeks ago ? Perhaps labor could then have acted to remove the possible security risk at that time.

It seems ASIO, the AFP and Channel nine media knew far more than the labor party far earlier.

If the potential national security risks were so great why let the situation continue for so long especially with the media having its nose involved.

Anyway, it will play out over the next days. Depending on what 60 minutes has to reveal on Sunday night the above questions may be more relevant.

Bridget has been shafted to protect Scotty from Marketing and his corrupt role in sports rorts.

  18. How are we supposed to get a Federal ICAC to clean up the corruption when LibLab don’t really want one …?

A week after introducing legislation banning donations from defence contractors, the greens accepted a $200,000 from a defence contractor.
It’s all OK though, because Bandt said it was a personal donation from the company owners.

    That’s an easy one!

Win a majority of seats in the Federal HoR and the Senate.

  23. Daniel and Gisela McMichael have made multiple donations to the party’s SA and federal branches since 2015-16.
Dr (Daniel) McMichael’s company, Sintelix, which was named a “top 10 homeland security solution provider” in 2018, lists the US Department of Defence, British Ministry of Defence, Australian Defence Department, Queensland Police Service, BAE Systems and the NSW Police Force among its customers.
