Essential Research: leadership ratings and more coronavirus

Monthly leadership ratings from Essential confirm the overall picture painted by Newspoll, with both leaders up but Scott Morrison especially so.

As reported by The Guardian, the fortnightly Essential Research poll (a sequence complicated by a bonus coronavirus poll last week) includes the pollster’s monthly leadership ratings, which reflect the findings of Newspoll in very slightly lesser degree. Scott Morrison is up on approval from 41% to 59% (compared with 41% to 61% in Newspoll) and down on disapproval from 49% to 31% (compared with 53% to 35%), while Anthony Albanese is respectively up from 41% to 44% (compared with 40% to 45%) and down from 33% to 29% (compared with 40% to 36%).

For the fifth successive poll, Essential asked respondents about their level of concern about the threat of coronavirus to Australia, to which the combined very concerned and quite concerned responses climbed from 68% to 63% to 82% to 88%, and has now remained steady at 88%. No information is provided on preferred prime minister — we will have to wait for the full report later today to see, among other things, if the question was asked.

UPDATE: Full report here. Scott Morrison now holds a 46-27 lead as preferred prime minister, out from 40-35 last time (note that the BludgerTrack trends are now updated with the latest Essential and Newspoll numbers). The government’s response is now rated good by 58%, up from 45% a week ago, and poor by 21%, down from 31%. The poll also finds 29% expecting a lengthy recession due to coronavirus; 51% expecting that “the economy will be impacted for 6-12 months or longer and will stagnate or show slow growth thereafter” (which for my tastes is not sufficiently distinct in its wording from the first option); and 11% expecting the economy will “rebound within 2-3 months”. The poll was conducted Thursday to Sunday from a sample of 1069.

Of course he supports it, he’s a snivelling, brown nosed sycophantic courtier. He’s also scared shitless that he might get the boot at some stage so it’s on the knees spreading his cheeks at the drop of a Donald hamburger.

That word picture is something I now regret reading. You’re too good at this.

Saint Jacinda’s Health Minister is still there despite two breaches.

Gladys’ Police Minister and Emergency Ministeri s still there despite travelling to Europe during the Bushfires and refusing to come home until told in words of one syllable that it was in his best interests to do so. I could go on. But, I’m sure you get the drift.

“This pandemic is the best sign ever that the party is over and it’s time for us all to come to grips with the sort of society we are going to live in.”

I hope so but there’ll be lots of very powerful, well-funded interests pushing to snap things back the way they were before, in fact to push the neoliberal project further, citing the need to pay back the debt. They have the ear of / control the Federal Government and own the mainstream media.

  4. Poroti,

Do you think 2 Para stopped fighting against the Argies in the Falklands when their CO was killed in action?

It is not in hindsight because i was here saying it in early February if not in late January. If we reopen the economy too soon and this virus takes off then we will be faced by a far larger problem that will need far harsher measures. It was economics that got in the way of closing the borders in late January when our university sector begged to allow international students into the country.

  6. Elliott was also alleged to have been involved in a road rage incident, impersonating a policeperson, and firing an automatic weapon without a licence so to do.

His police persons have told him nothing to see here…

The reason Elliott can rack up a cracker of a set of allegations is that he would bring Bere down if she tried to sack him.

  7. bucephalus
Had we closed the borders at the start of February there was always the chance it could get through in the weeks before but by now we would probably have most of the economy functioning because its now been two full months since then instead of two weeks.

What a debacle for GladysB. The shortcomings of the second raters who make up her government are being exposed for all to see. But she can’t afford to have any more go, else the Dominic Perrottet will bring out the Religious Right to reclaim the throne..

“Call him a PPP conservative: pragmatic, progressive and, he hopes, popular. One of 12 children, he attends church every Sunday but doesn’t want new religious freedoms enshrined in law. He ridicules the left but calls on Paul Keating for advice. He harbours a passion for urban design and is determined to knock down Sydney’s most famous brutalist building.

NSW’s little-known Treasurer, Dominic Perrottet, is a living experiment in whether a member of the Liberal Party’s religious Right – think Tony Abbott, Eric Abetz and Peta Credlin – can attract broad community appeal.

In the post-Abbott and Turnbull era, voters are suspicious of Liberal ideologues. The bitterness of the party’s internal fights has stained their reputations.

It was 5 years ago we lost him.

Yes, I’ll always regret being diffident one day when I saw the name Richard Benaud down on the daily time sheet at my golf club as a visiting reciprocal.

It was a couple of years before he died. There was an open slot in the foursome but I was too shy to take it and passed up an opportunity to join one of the icons of Australian sport for a few hours.

  10. Just got off the phone from a couple we know spouting this “5G-Coronavirus Conspiracy” shit.

There appears to be no intention of lifting the restrictions. The 6 month forecast remains extant. The human tragedy from the economic devastation will be unimaginable. I fully expect that this blog will be destroyed as William will likely lose his job due to the scythe through Universities.

  12. It has been a bit scary to see how some people’s anxiety means they’re more than happy to phone in things
One side effect on the Kiwi lockdown has apparently been a great deal of dobbing and curtain twitching

Bored and anxious New Zealanders turn to exercise shaming as lockdown grinds on
Lack of clarity from the government on how far people are allowed to walk from their homes has led to confusion and abuse

Seems like Vics are already hot on the phone button as well

Police hotline swamped with COVID-19 calls as Victorians dob in neighbours

Not that healthy for social aspects I would say

I would tend to think it is more a circumstance of if we can’t do it then no-one else should be able to either in the circumstances

I am not that anxious and wouldn’t dob in a local who bought their parents/family members up for a bit unless there was some egregious activities. Even then others would probably be more keen than me. There are local covid19 cases from OS but locals have been pretty conscientious on physical distancing as far as I have seen

We had a hot spot pop up out of nowhere in NSW today. 11 people at the same window manufacturing factory in Liverpool have come down with COVID-19.

    ——————————————————–

We’re having the windows replaced in our building. The measurer was in our apartment the other day.
Do you have the name of the company?

  14. Social pressure is one of the keys to national survival.
It goes with any credible notion of ‘community’.
Dobbing in potential killers is fine by me.

  15. beguiledagain,
I only heard that it was situated in Liverpool when I was watching the 9 News. I imagine the information may also be available on the NSW Health website.

  16. It’s becoming expensive to be entertained. I shelled out $25 to watch Midway on Telstra Box Office and am just about to shell out another $25 to watch 1917.

  17. Q
Harwin did not quit because he fucked up arts funding.
Harwin did not quit because he broke the social distancing rules. As far as I can see, Harwin did not actually break any rules.
Harwin has not apologized for breaking any rules.
Harwin quit because he is a scapegoat.
After only the very first fortnight in home pokey, the natives are getting restless and required blood.
    Berejiklian obliged.

New York 39 days from zero cases to….

Geez, disturbing stuff….I hope Aust and NZ are on track to get through this, latest view is that we are, but who knows really? Ardren was bold and decisive early, another lesson in what it means to be a leader….The Aussie memes saying WTTE ‘I wish she was ours’ will only grow…..

Pretty sure 5G is almost non-existent in Australia at the moment.
    ______________
    nope.

We’re busy rolling out 5G, and our coverage is growing day-by-day. Right now, we’re in 32 cities and regional centres across Australia – more than any other network. If you’re in an area without 5G Coverage, your device automatically swaps to 4G or 3G depending on the available signal.

This map shows where we have 5G coverage at 8 April 2020.

  20. Yet another positive story of C-19 social isolation. A friend of mine, who lives in the trailer park, whose habit before was to visit the local library daily until it closed, by the kindness another friend, is now able to access the internet in his trailer. He’s over the moon.

  21. 5g towers in key ports across NSW. Also at the key location of Woy Woy. So clearly there is some involvement in CC’s HSR. Where does all this end?

Don Harwin has resigned – who is this man? What do you notice about this gallivanting Liberal Minister?

    health ‘issues’

Convenient, but he looks hugely overweight from media photos – including a very recent one of him ‘shopping’.

  23. In a local paper now that I checked, plenty of phone callers out there already according to a local paper

Most locals want the Qld border closed by NSW

“On Wednesday night, Ballina Shire councillor Keith Williams said he received the first report of travellers with Queensland number plates moving into holiday flats in Lennox Head.

The holiday-makers were reported to Crime Stoppers, and police have followed up with the matter.

“Some people just won’t listen,” Cr Williams said via Twitter.

    “Please don’t come.”

“Richmond Police District Inspector Susie Johnston said they had been swamped with similar calls from residents concerned about people who are not abiding by new laws implemented to prevent the spread of the virus.

We are getting calls constantly, and we are certainly responding to all of these calls,” Insp Johnston said.”

  24. So, for all the nitpickers out there, waiting coiled in their boxes to strike, here is the full Gosford Hospital story:

A cluster of 12 coronavirus cases at Gosford Hospital was among 416 coronavirus transmissions that NSW health authorities have not been able to trace back to their source.

The first case was detected on March 27. Within two weeks, two elderly patients, four family members and six nurses and doctors had tested positive for coronavirus.

Several more staff were sent home to self-isolate as NSW Health authorities traced the contacts of the confirmed cases to identify anyone who may have come into contact with them while they were infectious.

The affected ward has since been designated a dedicated COVID-19 unit for low-risk patients. Both patients in the hospital cluster have been isolated in single patient rooms and were recovering well, chief executive of Central Coast Local Health District Dr Andrew Montague said.

Dr Montague said the health district had taken several precautions to prevent the spread of the virus within its hospitals, including splitting emergency departments into general and high-risk “red” COVID sections to separate patients with respiratory symptoms, screening staff before each shift and restricting visitors to one person per patient per visit.

The reason Elliott can rack up a cracker of a set of allegations is that he would bring Bere down if she tried to sack him.

I loved the excuse gladys gave at the time that elliott didn’t know it was against the law to fire the automatic weapon and that “an investigation is underway as to why the officer in charge of the firing range allowed it”.

I also see elliott is a Duntroon man, looks like he had a degree upon entry and did the 18-month commissioning course – like Buce.

The people of NSW only have two real choices and one of them is Jodi McKay.

Gladys has it as long as she wants.

Gladys has made so many mistakes there soon won’t be a carpet big enough to sweep them under. And Jody McKay has more integrity in her little finger than Gladys Berejiklian has in her whole wizened body.

[‘Mavis I don’t believe you live in a trailer park. I think you live next door to MT in Point Piper.’]

You’re quite astute. I did once lease an apartment in Wentworth Avenue, Point Piper. But that’s before I fell on hard times. Without a word of a lie, I’m now ensconced in a trailer park, eagerly await a call from Jerry Springer:

The memo about the religious right seizing the NSW Libs has been going on for a long time with little to show for it.
