Newspoll: 51-49 to Coalition

The first Newspoll in three weeks records a coronavirus-related surge in personal support for Scott Morrison, familiar from international experience.

Courtesy of The Australian, the first Newspoll in what has been a dramatic three weeks finds the Coalition restoring its two-party lead, now at 51-49 after being the other way around last time. On the primary vote, the Coalition is up two to 42%, Labor down two to 34%, the Greens up one to 13% and One Nation up one to 5%.

These changes are modest compared to the leaders’ ratings, which, as Kevin Bonham notes in comments, produce the strongest improvements in Newspoll history for a prime minister on both personal ratings and preferred prime minister. Morrison’s approval rating is up 20 to 61%, with disapproval down 18 to 35%, and his preferred prime minister lead has blown out from 42-38 to 53-29. However, Anthony Albanese’s ratings have also improved, up five on approval to 45% and down four on disapproval to 36%. Eight-six per cent of respondents expressed approval for the JobKeeper scheme with 10% disapproving, with 64% rated the $130 billion expenditure the right amount, compared with 14% for not enough and 16% for too much.

The poll also repeated a suite of questions on coronavirus and the government’s response that featured in the last Newspoll three weeks ago. The headline findings are that 84% profess themselves worried (up eight) and 14% confident (down six) about the impact of the virus on the Australian economy; 41% are confident (down six) and 57% worried (up six) about the preparedness of the public health system; 67% are confident (up four) and 32% worried (down three) about information available on how to protect one’s self; 47% are confident (down fourteen) and 33% worried (down fourteen) about the performance of federal and state governments in managing the economic impact; 59% are confident (up eight) and 28% worried (down five) about governments’ preparation of the public health system to cope; and 75% are confident (up ten) and 20% worried (down eight) about governments’ performance in informing Australians how to protect themselves.

Sixty-seven per cent professed themselves worried about catching the virus, 38% about higher government debt, 36% about job loss, 35% about falling superannuation balance, 15% about house prices falling and 7% about none of the above. The poll was conducted Wednesday to Friday, a subtle shift from its usual field work period of Wednesday to Saturday, from a sample of 1508.

As long as Labor’s soft policies on our borders continue, these boats will continue to arrive along with the risks they carry, including people with serious communicable diseases,” Mr Morrison said. 8 years ago

Perhaps “sacrificing people” is a better term.

Nah, too euphamistic, try “murdering people” . To the point.

The Hillsong conference a Sydney cruise ship destination?

Ever noticed the Poorline gets half the votes of the Greens but twice the media exposure? I wonder why.

  8. In other news, I see there was more talk of old British TV shows overnight- namely the excellent ‘Minder’ with Arfur and Terry 🙂

Someone put up the video of the theme tune but here’s Dennis Waterman on Top Of The Pops in 1980 singing the full version with his band Kenny. Note it’s a very rare occurrence of an act singing live in the studio at a time when nearly all TOTP was lip-synched. Decent voice that Dennis.

My favourite Arfur Daley one-liner was from late on in the series, when Arfur was setting someone on for a job with ridiculously poor pay and conditions. When the fella opined wtte it shouldn’t be allowed Arfur asked “Where wuz you durin’ Maggie’s reign of terra?” 🙂

    Like abortion?

Like suicides produced by kiddy fiddlers?

My argument is that poroti is using the same rhetoric as anti-abortionists on a topic they are obviously passionate about.

  10. @ nath:

“ I think that maybe this may have become embedded. That Morrison would be irrevocably tarred by his stupid bushfire response. But that seems to not be the case now. So it’s a huge win for Morrison.”

    ______

Maybe. I reckon only if he keeps on the miracle train, and doesn’t return to type. The post pandemic area will be telling. I reckon a lot of people will end up remembering the bushfires, the Ruby Princess, sport rorts, even the barrier reef foundation, once they realise that the economy would simply bounce back like after the GFC and that Moses Morrison’s only prescription is austerity.

I find it a little sad to see the much older Dennis Waterman in “New Tricks” – good for his income, tho. 🙂

  12. The UK soccer players’ pay issue was discussed yesterday on Offsiders, as there were two sports journos from the UK on the panel, and they made the obvious point that doesn’t seem to have occurred to Wayne Rooney, that the players aren’t actually playing and the clubs aren’t getting revenue through the door, so why not take a pay cut?

I do agree, however, that others in politics should do it as well.

The Master of an International Cruise ship is now a member of the Hillsong Church?

No one said that, so your attempt at distraction is a big ‘F’ for fail.

What WAS suggested was that various passengers on the cruise ship could have been tailoring their travel plans to coincide with the Hillsingsong Conference.

Perhaps if one or two football clubs file for bankruptcy then reality might hit some of the highly paid players.

  15. Kevin Rudd pointed out on Ch7 this morning the Ruby Princess police inquiry terms of reference is limited to the companies actions ie exclude the NSW and Federal Government actions. Great.

On the subject of paying for the Cv-19 crisis/welfare I suspect Morrison will not do much before the next election. Better to kick the can down the road so if Labor get in its their problem, or if he is re-elected then hook in early in the term – probably austerity.

  19. [Kevin Rudd pointed out on Ch7 this morning the Ruby Princess police inquiry terms of reference is limited to the companies actions ie exclude the NSW and Federal Government actions. Great.]

    As you would expect.

First, the NSW police has no jurisdiction to investigate the actions of Commonwealth agencies.

Second, and this has not been challenged yet, the NSW Health Dept decision making was by a panel. Whether right or wrong, unless someone can suggest it was made unlawfully, there is no role for the NSW police in investigating it.

  20. On radio this morning, the manager of the Tangalooma resort on Moreton Island ( the resort a repeat offender of wage theft ) was talking up his plan of having all the NRL teams stay at the resort for the season and ferrying across to Brisbane for games.
He was doing this for the benefit of his staff when questioned on the windfall the resort could expect from the arrangement.

You might feel it necessary to demonise people because they have a different opinions to you. But accusing people of being murderers is over the top and makes you look like an idiot.

A very naughty selective quote by Gerard Henderson yesterday. I actually said “Presenter of a boutique cable TV program says he’s looked at the evidence and all the world’s doctors and epidemiologist are wrong. Who should I believe?” That’s a little different don’t you think.

lizzie’s right. That footage was from last week when he went outside to clap the doctors and nurses.

  24. “Any worker who has lost their job as a result of the virus should be included. ”

Why just them? Anyone who loses their job at the moment is going to need extra support.

In normal times you’ve got a reasonable chance of finding a new job. Lose your job now and you’re screwed.

This is the second day in a row where Christian Porter’s behaviour has been appalling. Yesterday he claimed unions were supportive of the wage subsidy being used to run down leave because of an application in the FW Commission that started before the wage subsidy was announced.
    ***
At every turn Porter has come to me seeking co-operation for the operation of the Parliament. The dishonesty from him this morning is disgusting.

Thankfully, no Australian politician or commentator, including Norman Swan and John Daley, is still pushing a “go early, go hard, it’ll be over in weeks” line.

I have not heard anyone (possibly excepting Donald Trump) claim “it will be over in weeks”. The point of the “go early, go hard” strategy is not that it will be over in weeks, it is that it will save lives – and ultimately also cost less.

Only time will tell, but surely that last bit must be of some interest to neoliberals?

  28. Catmomma,

No, that isn’t what was suggested at all. It was clearly that the disembarkation was arranged by Hillsong aligned people which means the Master of the Vessel has to be a member.

Slowing and lowering the peak will actually cost more economically; that’s if you don’t place any value on human lives.

  30. Just to be clear on the Premier League footballers pay question, I’m well aware they are overpaid prima donnas and their respective clubs have suffered a drop in income .. although possibly not as much as you’d think as with the big clubs eg Manchester United matchday revenues are quite a small proportion these days

I think it’s more the case that it’s an easy cheap shot for the pollies, and let’s not forget there are other highly paid managers and directors in forcibly closed non-essential businesses who could take a pay-cut to help out but are not being pilloried for failing to do so

Friend of family who works in a child care centre in WA, said that on Friday the workers were all informed that their wages have been halved. The reason given was that the Morrison government was providing free child care.

  32. Morning all. Thanks BK for the summary. On Boris Johnson, if he is being taken to hospital the stretcher would be standard procedure. But given the current pressures on the NHS he would not be being taken to hospital unless he was seriously ill. I would not like to be going near any hospital in UK, USA, Italy or Spain right now.

There are several elderly US politicians who should be nervous too. They shake a lot of hands, and a lot of rich, entitled people have been getting this virus, from Aspen to Boston. Connecticut has a remarkably high number of cases.

  33. Buce,
The Master of the Vessel is an employee. The Laws of the Sea are a quaint anachronism when it comes to hanging on to your job. And I’ll leave it at that. Mainly because another day of your petifogging is more than I can take.
