Newspoll: 54-46 to Labor

Modest shifts on the primary vote cause Newspoll’s two-party meter to tick in favour of Labor.

The latest fortnightly Newspoll, courtesy of The Australian, has Labor extending its two-party lead from 53-47 to 54-46. The primary votes are Coalition 36% (down one), Labor 39% (steady), Greens 9% (steady) and One Nation 7% (up two). Both leaders’ personal ratings have improved slightly, with Scott Morrison up one on approval to 43% and down three on disapproval to 45%, and Bill Shorten up one to 36% and down two to 51%. Scott Morrison’s lead as preferred prime minister is 43-36, in from 44-35. The poll was conducted Thursday to Sunday from a sample of 1610.

  1. Good. A later than usual Newspoll release but a welcome one.

Just driven back from Ballarat. When our team St.Kilda is struggling you will drive a long way to see a potential win, even in a pre-season game! Positive kick:handball ratio again. Nice to have any win. Also Mars (Eureka) Stadium has been developed well and is well suited to AFL games – Bulldogs will play two here during this season I think. Also warm and sunny for most of the game (Ballarat often very cold in winter)

One of our kids pointed out St.Alipius Parish School as we drove back through Ballarat – chilling.

The problem that the Coalition have is that young people are always being born and end up turning 18.

    And old people die.

Think Scott should stay out the limelight for awhile and see what happens but he can’t help himself. He would honestly believe that God will save the day.

He is channeling Trump by doing something everyday irrespective whether it is good or not. The only issue is, we aren’t the USA.

    Thank god for compulsory voting!

I know, far to early to claim victory, but I chose 91 seats to Labour in the Contest some time ago!!!!

You may not be far off Swampy.

  5. I have had Fibre To the Kerb for three months.

No problems. much better and cheaper than ADSL i had because I have cancelled the landline!!

The same feeling I get when I drive past the old Parramatta Boys Home.

  7. We just got upgraded to the TPG 50mbps plan and actually saved some money. FTTN is working reasonably well here after some initial pain.

You’re one of the lucky ones.

My street is getting FTTC down one side and FTTN down the other. I shit you not.

There are no prizes for guessing which side of the street I live on, however I’ll give you a hint – I am less than happy.

    Good night all!

Sweet dreams Cat. Dream of a Daley Labor Government in NSW and a Shorten Labor Government for our ailing nation.

  10. davidwh:

We have to make the FTTN decision soon as our ADSL2+ is being switched off.

To be honest I’m worried that Turnbull’s NBN is not going to do the same job as what I currently have.

  11. I just made a suggestion on twitter.

The Gina Award – a gilded statue with a lump of coal on top – presented to the Coalition on their Golden anniversary of 50 Newspolls!

I have the 25 mbps plan and have watched films on Netflix etc. with no problems.

What is the benefit in paying for 50mbps? Am i missing something? (entirely possble)

  13. But honestly, what do people expect? This is the worst government I’ve ever seen, and by a country mile too

In the bin with this garbage! The LNP needs to have a good look at itself afterwards too: these people are simply trash.

    Incompetent, cronyist, corrupt, incoherent trash

  14. Fees the changeover was pretty easy but the consistency was poor for 12 months. They did some upgrading or maintenance just before Christmas and things seem to be improved since then. I hate the landline though and basically never use it now.

  15. Swampy TPG contacted us and offered the 50 plan at a cheaper monthly cost. They told us they were cutting out the plan we were on.

    Really! That’s bizarre.

Is that even sensible from a technical point of view?

The NBN should be a major political issue as should privatisation of public goods.

OK so the 50 is cheaper than the 25?

I have 25 but i do not notice any problems with filns, which i have accessed a few times. What would 50 add?

  18. I bum called my own land line at home today, picked up the antiquated portable phone and could not understand why no one was responding to my hellos.

  19. @Late Riser

Great work on curating all those guesses. The PM median seems to be quite prescient. Spookily so given there’s still a MOE at play.
Any chance you could post a summary on how the PB mean and median have fared this year?

  20. Swampy the main difference we have noticed is consistency. We are not having many slow times. Also it doesn’t seem to take as long to load and run videos.

  21. This will accelerate the LNP’s campaign retreat, seat from the marginals into defending their previously safe seats, as PvO mentioned on Insiders, campaigning for Opposition. I hope Peter Dutton is feeling pretty nervous right now. He can join Campbell Newman in the boneyard: biggest conservative overreach, followed by most satisfying electoral smackdown.

Re: Prentice going Indy in Ryan: I’ll believe it when I see it. She would only succeed in bringing the Greens or Labor into a stronger position. I don’t think she has a hope in hell of getting up herself: her local profile really isn’t very large, and while plenty of local Lib voters (not members) might prefer her over Julian, there is no way she can win without party endorsement IMO.

  22. shellbell

What does this mean:….. “I bum called my own land line….”??

When I was a child our telephone was a wooden box on the wall with bakelight (bakelite?) seperate hand and mouth pieces where you spoke to the girls from the local PMG exchange. Our telephone number was 157. lol

Hmm. Let me think about how to present that. Newspoll only? Actual versus Median? Difference? Number of guesses? etc. Once I’ve got a way to present it, it shouldn’t be too much work. The spreadsheet knows all. I can say though that the median doesn’t always get it right.

  24. Confessions

Oh avoid Turnbull’s NBN as long as you can.

It’s dreadfu: no faster than ADSL and far less reliable.
    ——-

    I am sorry to hear.

Well, I am lucky near Brunswick Heads NSW. I have FT the Kerb. Much better than ADSL and cheaper because I save $30 monthly from cancelling landline.

But it’s not significantly fast. I used ot have trouble downloading anything. Now it is much better.

  25. David Sharaz Twitter:

Julia Banks has just accused @ScottMorrisonMP of offering to buy her silence by sending her to NY on a $50,000 junket. Via @Lisa_Wilkinson’s project interview.

  26. Last newspoll wasn’t there some poor Liberal twerp who avowed that its 53/47 result was really 50/50 when MOE of 3 was applied? Wonder how he’s dealing with this one.
