Newspoll: 53-47 to Labor

Apart from some slight improvement in Malcolm Turnbull’s personal ratings, Newspoll continues to record no change since before the budget.

The latest Newspoll is absolutely unchanged on the post-budget result from a fortnight ago, with primary votes of Coalition 36%, Labor 36%, Greens 10% and One Nation 9%, and Labor leading 53-47 on two-party preferred. Nonetheless, Malcolm Turnbull’s approval rating is up for the third survey in a row, this time by two points to 35%, although he’s also up a point on disapproval to 54%. Bill Shorten is up one on approval to 33% and down one on disapproval to 53%, while Turnbull’s lead as preferred prime minister is all but unchanged at 45-33, compared with 44-31 last time. As always, the poll was conducted Thursday to Sunday by The Australian from a sample of around 1700.

  1. I’ve been enjoying War on Waste too (watched it last night), and like Jackol was simply aghast at the throw-away attitude of those young women towards clothes. On a positive note however, I have a staff member who is 20-something and buys all her clothes from op shops and garage sales, so hopefully the War on Waste women aren’t necessarily indicative of the age demographic.

I was also shocked to learn that the supposedly biodegradable takeaway coffee cups aren’t biodegradeable at all (false advertising?), and have taken a mug into work so I can use it when having meetings in cafes and so on.

In short it’s a great program, interesting and engaging, and if peeps haven’t seen it yet, do seek it out on iView.

  2. That’s what Hitler did. That’s what communism did,” Court said, “get in the minds of the children. There’s a whole plot in our nation and in the nations of the world to get in the minds of the children.”
Court said God’s law on gay marriage was as clear and unambiguous as a policeman flagging down a car. “You pray there is enough people who will stand up and flag this nation down,” she said. “And say, no, we are not going the way of some other nations, because they are having so many problems.”

A caller hailed Court as “a prophetess, a judge”, anointed by God.
Geez most here are gunna be a bunch of heathens, fornicators and ungodly.

  3. So if Conski is so great how come all parties in NSW including the Liberal Govt and the Principals’ Council are speaking out against it.

And some here want Labor to cave in. Absolutely crazy.

  4. Far from modifying her denouncement of gay marriage, tennis champion Margaret Court has broadened it, saying that it was causing huge problems in countries where it was legalised, that homosexuality was an ungodly “lust for the flesh” and that LGBT tendencies in young people were “all the devil”.

“That’s what Hitler did. That’s what communism did,” Court said, “get in the minds of the children. There’s a whole plot in our nation and in the nations of the world to get in the minds of the children.”

That’s what religion does, tries to get in the minds of children!

  5. I think there are some RW Populists that even the might of the Putin Cyber Ops team could not help.

Pauline Hanson is one of them.

  6. With all the documents and data the investigators are gathering and with some of his staff and former staff rolling over. I think “Agent Orange” will become even more erratic and his twitters more erratic and that’s something for the man who put the twit in twitter.

  7. I hate how these people think we live in a theocracy, and no one ever bothers to call them on it.

And aren’t they invariably the first to criticise those countries which have sharia law? Hypocrites!

  8. Good evening all,

If Turnbull does one deal for extra funding then he and his entire argument is shot. If he throws extra money at the Catholic sector then state and territory governments, unions and public school parent groups will be very very angry.

According to Turnbull and Birmingham ” Gonski 2.0 ” is already the real deal with the signed and sealed approval of David Gonski himself. So, why the need for extra funding if the policy is perfect ? If a single sector eg Catholic sector is given more money then how can Turnbull argue that ” Gonski 2.0 ” is sector blind and already fair.

Turnbull will have to pass the legislation as is. If not, any backdown on funding for any one sector or any perceived largeness for a particular sector, any sign of wheeling and dealing with the cross bench will justify the position being taken by labor that Gonski 2.0 is flawed, unfair and under funded.

The trouble for Turnbull is the legislation will not pass as is. To pass, deals will be made, funding either reallocated or increased and every deal or backflip will confirm the position taken by labor. “Gonski 2.0 ” is a crock of shit and was never the sector blind , needs based funding model it was touted to be by Turnbull and that is why Bill Shorten and labor stood up for schools and students across Australia.

    Cheers.

  9. I wonder if Corey Bernardi has approached Margaret Court about standing for election federally. He might hope that her past tennis success and ‘anti gay’ profile would translate into votes for his party.

  10. “There’s a whole plot in our nation and in the nations of the world to get in the minds of the children”
Is that still going on?! I remember talking to a friend back when we were kids about him seeing his parents drink blood and eat flesh. Gave me nightmares.

  11. “Margaret Court has broadened it, saying that it was causing huge problems in countries where it was legalised, that homosexuality was an ungodly “lust for the flesh” and that LGBT tendencies in young people were “all the devil”.”

And I thought Kathy Bates played the mother in the Waterboy, turns out it was Margaret Court

Ok all you fornicator out there, courts after you.
Court’s radio elaboration was rambling and syncopated. “It’s very sad that they would use my tennis for something that is a now thing,” she said, overlooking that it was her tennis that gained her a public platform in the first instance and that she was repeatedly acclaimed by the interviewer as “the greatest tennis player in history”.
She said the gay lobby was a minority, yet somehow was bullying the majority. She said she had nothing against gay people, who could do as they pleased, except marry in the Christian tradition. But she also said homosexuality was a sin. “So is adultery. So is fornication,” she said. “All those things are a lust for the flesh. We know it’s not God. They know it, too.”

Are we going to see a Margaret and Fred crusade in the Mixed Doubles at next years Open.

The could then loudly sermonise during any gay players matches.

  13. For Vic, PhoenixRed, AR and others following the Trump imbroglio. This was in the NY Times version of BK’s morning roundup:

For all of the illicitness surrounding President Trump and Russia, his motives have never been clear. If anything, a relationship of convenience between Trump and Vladimir Putin seemed more likely than an actual alliance.

The past week has increased the chances that something akin to an alliance exists.
On his European trip, Trump repeatedly behaved as if he were trying to advance Putin’s interests. Meanwhile, back in Washington, we learned of an attempted secret communication channel between Jared Kushner — the president’s son-in-law and senior adviser — and Putin’s Russia.

I recommend four quick reads for anyone trying to understand the latest dark turn in the Russia story:

  14. I think Labor has really sharpened up its attack on the government’s school funding model over the last couple of days and is on much firmer ground. I don’t think strategically it was necessarily a bad thing to offer a bit of support to the Catholic sector, but the focus of the attack has been far more on public school funding and on significant funding increases for very wealthy high fee independent schools, highlighting the nonsense that this model is needs based. By sharpening that focus Labor is on very strong ground. As has already been mentioned, the government appears extremely unlikely to get this through as is, and their increased ranting during QT today suggested to me they know they are backed in to a corner. At the very least they will probably need to put more money in, a win for Labor right there.

  15. So is Margaret Court saying that unless a lady is in the fertile part of her cycle and the husband is fertile and no contraception is used intercourse is a “just for flesh by fornicators”?
If so there are a whole lot of sinful “naughties” going on!

  16. Around 400,000 pensioners and part pensioners are getting some sort of tickle up from the Coalition. They hope to offset the political damage with some sort of grab bag off lollies.
IMO the only people hihgly motivated to change their support as a result of the education cuts will be the parents of RC schools.
    Ditto NDIS changes.
Some people might switch to the Coalition now that it has concocted the appearence of movement.

  17. Mr Money
‘Geez most here are gunna be a bunch of heathens, fornicators and ungodly.’
I bloody well hope so, or I’m leaving!

  18. boerwar,
‘Some people might switch to the Coalition now that it has concocted the appearence of movement.’
    Barnaby is on the lav?

  19. Matt31,

    Spot on.

If Turnbull does throw extra funding at the sectors ( which he will have to do if he wants a result ) no way will he throw in another $22 billion so labor will campaign right through to the next election about 1) providing extra money to fully resource schools and students and 2) the Turnbull model never being the real deal.

    Cheers.

  20. BK:

    *laughs*

Along the same vein, what does Ms Court think about relations between infertile or post-menopausal couples? Precisely where the argument of ‘but sex is all about reproduction’ falls over.

  21. I think Labor has really sharpened up its attack on the government’s school funding model over the last couple of days and is on much firmer ground.

This. Labor aren’t on the Catholic’s side. They are on the side of the proper Gonski not Conski. They are on the side of the Federal Government forking up the cash as had been agreed through much difficult negotiation whilst Abbott and the rest of the filth in the Coalition tried to knock it down.

Trumble has tried the same bait and switch con he pulled on NBN. Gut it but keep the name. Shorten quite rightly isn’t going to let him get away with some brainfart dreamt up without any consultation at all on the eve of a Budget for no better reason than to try and get poll bounce. Beyond the pure political opportunity Brain T offered it is ridiculous to think Trumble and Birmingham can knock up a better plan on the back of an envelope than all the hard work done originally and save billions doing it. It stinks of another Trumble back of the coaster job with the MDB. That one went so good to eh? (spot a recurring pattern yet?)

Shorten and Labor are on completely safe ground. As Doyley says, Trumble has to get his brainfart up and legislated utterly unamended. Because he did no work prior to announcement just one special deal or concession will open the floodgates with every single special interest jumping up to also get their bite. Getting anything up unamended happened rarely enough in Howard’s last term. It sure ain’t going to happen with this.

There is an awful long way to go on this one. Shorten has positioned himself with the simplest message (fully fund what was agreed), and every single concession Trumble now makes simply reinforces the strength of that position. He’ll be feeling very relaxed.

    Trumble? Not so much.

Attorney General George Brandis says the surest way to prevent these terror attacks is to give the agencies covert powers for intelligence gathering. #richo MORE http://bit.ly/2qxx1Kc

When he coughs up his diary he’ll have more credibility in asking for the public to give up more of their freedoms to intelligence agencies. Until then he can naff off.

  23. BK,
MC says that procreation is the only justification for having sex??? Is that woman stark, staring mad? Someone buy that woman a vibrator, and one for her husband as well.

  24. I understand that the word ‘fornicate’ is a backwards construction from the Latin word foe the guy who attended to the furnaces that heated the water in Roman baths – “furnicatur”.

  25. If I might put in my 2 cents worth on the Great Stadium controversy.

The Margaret Court Arena is name in honour of a past tennis great, from the pre-grunt era. Lately she’s been in the public eye, expressing controversial views on marriage equality. I haven’t been following closely but she doesn’t seem to have gone into hate speech, just the party line for the religiously conservative.

It’s up to the tennis authorities to decide what, if anything, they want to do, but we can’t retrospectively rename everything when the person named after turns out decades later to have unpopular views.

Whatever, no big deal. I can slot it into my list of things to worry about at number 7,123.

  26. It would appear that Maggie may have spent a little too long out in the sun without a hat during her tennis playing days….

  27. Unlike the Churches, I don’t think that the ‘gay community’ is attempting to recruit new members by indoctrinating children.
