BludgerTrack: 53.4-46.6 to Labor

One Nation back inside single figures, in an otherwise uneventful reading of the BludgerTrack poll aggregate.

NOTE: Apologies for the ongoing situation with the formatting in comments. This is not intentional and the former state of affairs will be restored, hopefully soon.

This week’s BludgerTrack reading records a dip in support for One Nation that brings them back inside double figures, but is otherwise essentially unchanged since last week. However, I am not including Ipsos at this stage, as the peculiarities of its two results (extremely high results for the Greens, a radically different result on two-party preferred from one result to the next) are such that it’s just bringing noise to the model. However, it has been included for leadership ratings, which this week record a mild improvement for Malcolm Turnbull.

  1. Penny Wong’s attempt to end the current debate was voted down, so the waffling and time-wasting continues while Cormann tries to get the numbers for the business tax cut.

It may seem like forever, but Trump has only been President for two months! Despite my belief that Trump was an illegitimate candidate for the Presidency, and even when he won, didn’t think he would be inaugurated, this imbroglio is moving along rather quickly. It has been absolute fascinating to watch!!

BREAKING: @WSJ’s @shaneharris reports Mike Flynn has offered to testify in exchange for immunity

As John Schindler predicted some time back – Moscow Mike Flynn would be the first to turn to save his own neck …

Hope his testification will be the crack that brings the whole deck of cards crashing down

Yep. And not forgetting the Jester! I have to confess to struggling to understand his cryptic tweets sometimes, but he has true insider knowledge of the state of play!
And I know I keep repeating myself, but this shit show will make Watergate look like a Sunday picnic!!

Yeah, caught O’Sullivan twice on the radio, once driving for s swim and second coming home. Mindless drivel and giving every indication that he would be waffling on with the indulgence of the house. How does these types end up warming the benches in the Senate?

  6. Wonder what the libs are offering Nicky X? It would have to be a motza. He will expect a hell of a lot more than ON. Amazing how this govt runs around bribing cross-benchers to pass legislation that is electoral poison.

I think by and large the Schindler/Mensch sites have done a much better level of ‘investigation’ than the mainstream US media …… its very jumbled at times but thanks to the input of certain deep throats like Jester etc ……the basic messages have been right on the money ……

  8. Are the comments still going new to old?
I don’t understand why Crikey would decide to piss off a large segment of its readership/potential readership in this way.

I don’t subscribe, (but that’s because the site quite literally, will not let me), but if I did, I would not be particularly happy.

  9. Senator O’Sullivan is outraged and deeply insulted at the suggestion that his continual empty waffling is filibustering.

  10. Triton – Presumably, Corman’s lie machine is operating at full throttle. Hard to believe Xenophon would fall for it thought.

  11. Thanks BK, I finally found you.

A survivor whose voice will be one of the last to be heard in the child abuse royal commission has urged political leaders to cast aside religious loyalties and urgently introduce strong child protection measures. That’s a big ask!
    https://www.theguardian.com/australia-news/2017/mar/30/introduce-child-protection-measures-survivor-to-tell-last-day-of-inquiry

    It shouldn’t be.

The RC has demonstrated how appallingly the Churches have behaved in this area.

Any person with any level of decency should wish to ensure that this can never happen again.

  12. I hope xenophon does get his emissions intensity scheme, as long as it is genuine and not just some airy fairy watered down version that might be discussed sometime in the future. An air tight commitment from the government would have two main effects IMO.

    1. The Libs would lose their “great big new tax” scare campaign against Labor at the next election.

    2. The RWNJs in the Liberal party and their lunatic supporters like Bolt and Price would go into meltdown creating even more chaos in the party.

Apart from those appealing political aspects of it, an EIS, according to most experts, is also exactly what Australia needs most right now and would send a strong policy message to investors that Australia has finally got a coherent energy policy.

Whatever else we may say about Zenophon, I think he has shown a lot of good sense in taking the stand that he has, as long as he is genuine about it and not just grand standing. You never quite know with him.

One final word on it. Even if the government somehow manages to get its full $50B tax cuts for BIG industry through, it won’t blunt it as a weapon for Labor to use at the next election. If anything it will make it even worse for the government as they push ahead with their main agenda – making the poor and less well off pay for it all.

  13. Katy Gallagher is pleading for the government and X to make a deal so they can at least vote on one amendment to the Human Rights legislation. (For hours now they’ve been “debating” a single amendment.) They haven’t got to the tax bill yet.

    Serious question

Is there anyone in the Fed coalition with anything resembling talent, cos I can’t think of anyone.

    That’s a bit unfair Itza.

They all have their own special “talents”.

It’s just that those talents don’t include compassion for the needy, economic competency, fairness, equality, civility and an ability to govern. 🙂

  15. Darn
“Even if the government somehow manages to get its full $50B tax cuts for BIG industry through, it won’t blunt it as a weapon for Labor to use at the next election. ”

But will Labor repeal it when in?
I somehow doubt it. Modern Labor is very wimpish when challenged by big business and ALP MP’s have their career paths with big business post Parliament to consider.

  16. The government is losing the Senate again. Its desperation time as it looks like their big give tax cuts to the corporations is failing.

This was very evident last night from Morrison claiming something was a success. Trying to preempt the attack from Labor for failing to deliver.

  18. workmanalice: I’ve been told the government has made a deal with NXT on company tax cuts. #auspol

Has Xenophon caved on his $10 million ceiling?

  19. Which I believe is his best option

An ind journalist I have worked with-who has been reliable-says they have 2 sources that say Trump is considering options-incl resignation

  20. Victoria

Things are getting so bad for Trump the GOP may actually vote to impeach to protect their political skins come Midterm time

  21. Well maybe not. Dastyari cheekily asked Brandis if more time had been spent debating the amendments than he took to develop the legislation in the first place. Brandis then spent several minutes attempting a serious answer, how his diary doesn’t record time durations, etc.

  22. Victoria

Yep Trump thought he had problems if Sally Yates was going to testify. Nothing compared to Flynn pleading the Fifth or singing like a canary.

His time is so done. It will be interesting to see how it affects Congress when they realise they were elected to pursue Russia’s agenda. 🙂

  23. workmanalice: Senate filibuster update – Cormann still negotiating with Xenophon. NXT hope to reach a company tax cut deal by 1pm but nothing yet #auspol

  24. Nicky X, there are only two certainties about a deal with Corman: he’s lying and he won’t honour his promises.
