South Australian election live

A thread for discussion of tonight’s South Australian election count as the results roll in.

As I type, polling booths in South Australia are set to close at any tick of the clock. I do so from the studios of ABC Television in Adelaide, where I’ll be standing in for Antony Green, who spends the evening grappling with Tasmania’s high-maintenance electoral system. Obviously I won’t have much to offer in the way of live commentary on this site, but here’s a thread where you can call the toss as the results roll in.

Briggs has the potential to become the next Sophie.

He got an extra big dollop of entitlement, smugness and arrogance when they were handled out.

Haven’t seen much competence of any kind however.

But Mayo would almost elect a dead dog if it was tory ?

    Even after ‘Dolly’.

    FFS!

  2. So, overall looks like the Coalition will be clearly pleased to take Tasmania, but the fact that the ALP could cling on in SA against expectations means overall honours for the night are largely shared

  3. Just told wife it looks like Labor retained South Australia, reckons it was Abbott sowing up and not even being polite enough to invite premier to announcements.

So there you are; Liberals lost SA because Abbott is a rude prick.

  4. [One thing the SA election coverage is saying to me is how un-multicultural the Tas society is compared with SA.]

There are two Dutch Libs in the lower house, Hidding and Petrousma.

  5. [Did either leader have anything to say in the campaign about the possible event of minority govt?]

“I’m not here to discuss hypotheticals, Michelle. We aim to win majority government and I’m confident we will.”

Elder looks like a Labor retain. Is there any figures as to whether prepoll and postal votes can change that?]

I would be interested to know what they have done in the past….I can’t find it.

There were 20,344 votes cast in 2010 in Elder.
There is a 571 difference now after 16,001 votes counted so far.
So the Libs need 57% of the postals (probably unlikely given how the cast votes went)

  7. [Did either leader have anything to say in the campaign about the possible event of minority govt?]

If they did, it would’ve been an evasion. Stuff like “We’ll deal with that if that happens. Best way to avoid a hung parliament is to vote…”

Nobody commits to anything related to minority government until the possibility occurs.

  8. If the Greens improved their vote slightly, it must mean that many voters did not want to vote Liberal or Labor.

I wonder how many Loon voters failed to preference Labor under their incomplete voting system of OPV?

HELLO, they have done a Fran and helped the conservatives.

  9. I wish during these post election speeches that the management would ban squealers. Why do people have to squeal during the speech.

Iwas one cranky parent when one of my kids squealed as a young child. Many a red sore bum in my tribe.

  10. Also… should be noted how Newspoll’s exit poll performed. Again, got the headline numbers alright, but screwed up the seat-level expectations.

  11. If Labor win this, that will be four of the their last six electoral wins when they have lost the popular vote.

It’s like the Playmander in reverse.

It’s possible that the party winning the popular vote in SA has lost more often than they have won since the war.

    #savotes Upper House Seat Projection (49.5% counted): ALP 4 (0) LIB 4 (+1) XEN 1 (-1) FF 1 (0) GRN 1 (0)

  13. For Liberals and their supporters in SA to be whining about the electoral system is, given the history of electoral manipulation under Playford, more than just a bit rich.

  14. In Marshall’s seat he has had a 2.7% swing against him – only on a 2.2% margin now. He is gone as Opposition Leader – he is a muppet!

  15. Looking at the ABC coverage of Weatherall giving his speech and, undecided or not, the smile is plain to see. Marshall looked pained.

It’s not how many votes you get, it’s where you get ’em. Not much point winning 10 seats by thousands if you lose 11 by a hundred.

  17. Okay, okay, I get the message re the question about minority govt.

Weatherill has confirmed in his speech that Labor are in for negotiating with the indies to form govt in SA. So I guess it’s a moot point now.

  18. Here is an interesting thing:
Since the method of electing senators and their short term replacements was changed in 1977 only 2 NSW Labor Senators have not been party officials/union heavies/ ministerial advisors. 1. Belinda Neal whose only apparent claim to public office was that she slept with someone from the inner party, 2. Deb o’Neill who mercifully brought the political career of 1. To an end.
Bob Carr could almost qualify but he did spend some time as an education officer of the Trades Council

Mayo went down to the line in 1998. Dolly won by <2%

The more Briggs gets painted with the Abbott brush the less people will like him (his higher profile will hurt him IMO)

There was also a 2% swing to Labor in Bragg today.

  20. Putting Marshall up there was a sign of hubris on the part of the Libs. The guy was an empty suit and they assumed that SA would fall the same way as QLD and NSW did… relying on a small-target strategy and the unpopularity of the government to drag them over the line.

When push came to shove, as the election got closer… there was no wave, there was no sense of momentum, it became a race. The big problem was that the Libs were cornered and Marshall was exposed as the inexperienced joke he was. Who’d have thunk the ALP would get swings TO them in ANY of their marginals…

  21. [Marshall looked pained.]

Marshall looked f*cked. I’m sorry, but there’s no other way to say it.

How does a LOTO go from being a sure frickin thing to being a feather duster in a matter of weeks? This election was the Liberals for their taking, and they messed it up.

If Labor form minority govt then Marshall is surely gone.
