Polls have closed in Tasmania, and votes should start coming in any tick of the clock. I’ll be preoccupied this evening covering the South Australian election count for ABC Television. ABC News 24 will be alternating through the night between the South Australian coverage and the Tasmanian, the latter of which is being handled by Antony Green on account of its high-maintenance electoral system.
Kevin Bonham is live-blogging the Tas election (link at right).
On early results something like:
Lib 14
ALP 7
Green 4
Landslide in Tasmanian terms
ALP will not get 7; they will be lucky to get 6. At this stage they have 1 in each electorate and possibly 2 in Denison, but the Greens at this early stage are leading them for a second seat there.

These are misleading figures: in Bass, Braddon and Lyons they are mostly from small rural booths. In Denison Kevin B says Labor will improve when the big northern suburbs booths come in.

I’m not a big fan of electoral systems where preferences get exhausted. This one in particular has the same air as that of Queensland in 2012.

Everything: the speech was a bit long, but it struck the right tone: it saluted the cause she believes in and the people who believed in her.
It was the antithesis of Rudd’s concession speech last year, which was all about him.
More extraordinarily ungracious stuff from Abetz. It’s verging on offensive. Scott Bevan has clearly had enough.
Couldn’t they have gotten another Lib on the panel? It’s as if this guy is still campaigning for the Tasmanian Liberals.

O boy McKin’s speech started off okay but soon turned into the most long winded election night speech i can recall in way too many years of following election nights.
McKim doesn’t get guaranteed media cover for his speeches, so you can understand him making the most of it.
I thought Hodgman’s speech the least interesting of the three. He’s a decent enough fellow, but no orator.

Denison 2-2-1. Called.
Franklin 3-1-1. Almost certain but if Labor can lift dramatically in late counting 2-2-1 is still possible.
Bass 3-1-1. Almost certain with a sliver of a chance of 3-2-0 off the back of anti-Green preferences and Ginninderra effect.
Lyons 3-1-1 or 3-2-0. Tossup until I look at it much more closely.
Braddon slightly leaning 4-1-0 (yikes), otherwise 3-2-0. PUP and the Greens look busted.
Probably 14-6-3 with 1 unclear ALP/Lib, 1 unclear ALP/Grn.
Worst Labor vote since Hare-Clark began in 1909. But still better than polls (or I) expected!
So how did the greens go towards becoming the opposition ? Lol the greens are up there with Baghdad Bob. Lol
#34…Don’t be silly and malicious. The pre-election opinion polls were suggesting that scenario was possible, and the Greens reacted to those independent polls by campaigning for official Opposition status, and why shouldn’t they have?
