Abbott government day one: open thread

Breaking news: Abbott wins.

Nothing actually further to add at this stage, but the new day requires a new thread. Please observe the plethora of new posts below for those wishing to follow late counting, and especially the fairly detailed one attempting to review the Senate situation. These extend on to the second page; I’ll do something to make them more accessible in the morning.

  1. Did anyone hear Windsor dump on Rudd just before the 6pm news on 702
“Abbott’s aide de camp in destroying his own party for 3 years”
“A Labor government forced to fight 2 opposition leaders”
“A concession speech that was not about Australia or his party but all about himself. The only time a defeated PM has not congratulated his opponent either as PM or in his seat”

[You’re just jealous that you can’t muster that quality of (ALP) hate.]

Well the Nats are a worthy second to Labor but Libs just aren’t up to it I think. I wonder if there a robust level of disunity in the “caucus” of the Motorists Party or Sports Party, or Family First so that the papers will have something to write about over next few years .. maybe their elected reps each have split personalities.

  3. Psephos@3282

I think the Redneck motor guy is a truer representation of australia than any green is.
The Bogans are out there and are probably 4 times the amount of the green vote!

That may well be true, and if the “bogans” had actually elected him, we wouldn’t be able to argue. But of course they didn’t. He polled 0.5% of the vote, or 3.6% of a quota. If he is elected his will defeat Helen Kroger, who has 77% of a quota.

Hahahaha… Helen Kroger to go down.

    I am so sad… 🙁

I had an argument with her at a polling booth on Saturday when she had a big whinge that certain ALP banners were too close to the polling booth entrance.

  4. The truth is about 20 of the 55 ALP seats could be removed without anyone noticing they were missing.

Maybe the ALP could have an essay competition with the winner getting preselection for a safe Labor seat? Might get better results then some of the existing logs.

  5. [I wouldn’t put a woman in as leader after the way our last woman leader was treated.]

If that’s the rationale, bugger the haters! While I am definitely not endorsing Plibersek at this time, if (in future) the only thing stopping her from becoming leader is the potential sexist backlash, I say do it anyway and defy them. The only way you can battle intolerance is through exposure and defiance.

  6. blue pill – I’d support the bamboo idea. Probably the best option would be to use it as biomass fuel via gasification to produce biochar. you get a renewable energy benefit, and most of the C gets converted into a a very stable form of carbon that will stay out of the atmosphere for centuries. if organic matter goes back to the soil, most of it will released back to the atmosphere within a decade or so. biosequestration has some role, but fossil emissions need to fall also and this is the main game. i despair at Greg Hunt offering $6-8 per tonne for unverifiable soil carbon when we have a la trobe valley full of land carbon that the fuckers are trying to dry and export as ‘clean coal’ (i.e. ‘only’ as dirty as black coal compared to the wet humic clay we call brown coal in Victoria)

the idea of and ETS is that polluters have incentive to reduce emissions, energy suppliers have incentive to invest in cleaner energy (such as bamboo to renewables), and hopefully land sequestration. it isn’t a tax – it is a tradable permit to pollute that becomes more expensive/valuable as the cap on emissions is lowered. the market decides how the rationed emissions are allocated. this makes economic sense, particular if coupled with ‘Direct Action’-style investment in innovation and regulations on emission standards and renewable energy. the labor-greens ETS does all of this well. the LNP Direct Action plan has taxpayers pay polluters to reduce pollution and potentially fines large polluters who exceed agreed baselines. it is very bureaucratic and 5-6 times more expensive than an effective ETS.

& finally – carbon neutrality is not so hard, so I don;lt accept your ‘we’ve all got blood on our hands, so cannot criticise or demand change’ premise – I don’t use any coal electricity (home solar more than covers about 60-70% of the year, and any that I don’t is 100% green power – yes, my actual electrons may come from CFP, but I purchase green power that has to be verified by the retailer); I have energy efficient house/appliances/computer, drive little in a fuel efficient car and pay for carbon off sets for all unavoidable emissions, with estimated from emissions from consumption – all up, estimated footprint is about 10-12 tonnes/yr for a family of four – costs $150-200 for the offsets. all up, carbon neutrality costs us about $300-350 per year. My company pays about $1,000 per year from turnover of $700,000 per year for full carbon neutrality.

  7. Jones and Brandis want to continue on with the carbon tax propaganda.

Plibersek wanted to explain that it is now a market price mechanism that Abbott wants to repeal – but Tanya was SHUT UP!

  8. Interesting number 51.83%

At close of counting today, both Clive Palmer in Fairfax and Kathy McGowan in Indi are leading with this exact percentage.

  9. Puff, the Magic Dragon.@3260

I am glad someone had the guts to tell Rudd where to go. But leave the decision to him. Come on Labor. Expel him, he deserves no less. Tear his epaulettes off and break his sword in two. March him out the gate before the full company. Then bolt it shut so he can never get back in.

Puff, you have totally lost the plot.

On what possible basis could Rudd be expelled? What party rule has he broken?

  10. One thing’s for sure: Labor cannot allow these blatant coalition lies that Brandis and Kroger have repeated tonight to stand.

  11. Fess
I’ll see if I can find a transcript.
I suspect if he had been given the chance Windsor would have supported no confidence in Rudd.

    What do you mean?

fess, Just a silly idea that we all might reach some consensus.

  13. “@cozitjustis: Business confidence will improve because the LOTO wont be talking our economy down daily #qanda”

I say that whoever becomes LOTO should talk economy down. That way voters can compare apples with apples

  14. Those clowns have nothing,…tanya, Lenore and even richo laughing at them.

Michael Kroger probably pissed about the loss of income to microparte

  15. Plibersek’s problem will be the same as Gillard’s, namely quite impressive and functional in her portfolio but out of her depth when “leading lady”. Albo will also be a shocker in that respect with no breadth at all. In fact all the potential leaders in ALP are gone. Maybe you can tempt Turnbull to become Labor LOTO, he’s probably your best shot.

The principle is sound, but I think it would be too big an ask. Especially if, as seems the case, her husband has a “history”. If she wanted it, fine, but I admire her too much to want to see her treated the way Gillard was.

  17. @Mick77/3526

Difference is that Tanya Plibersek will be legit from Opposition, and will take time in Opposition (for 2016) election to get ready.

  18. “@RichardDiNatale: It’s going to be a long, long three years. When your boss annoys you tomorrow just remember I have to work with Brandis #qanda”

  19. Jones, Lenore and Tanya combine brilliantly to comprehensively let the cat out of the bag.

Neither Brandis or Kroger could list ONE economic reform on the Coalition agenda. They were questioned seriously for about 5 minutes and had no choice but to look like geese. They just had no answer. Neither could name ONE reform!

Shame on Qanda and the MSM generally….. this analysis was a week too late.

  20. [I suspect if he had been given the chance Windsor would have supported no confidence in Rudd.]
He said exactly that, but nevertheless we’ve had frothy PB mouths here for years wondering when he was gonna spill the beans on Abbott with his blackberry, and when Slipper was gonna tell all on whoever. But it’s all over … Prime Minister Tony Abbott till at least 2018-9.

  21. @Phil_HX4: Fact check! ETS currently legislated to come in to effect 2015. Rudd promised to bring it forward. #qanda

    Interesting timing

  22. [Neither Brandis or Kroger could list ONE economic reform on the Coalition agenda. ]

Worse than that, Taylor admitted we don’t really know what the coalition’s economic policies are because they’ve all been shunted off to reviews for beyond the election.

Where was the outrage from OM at the time? Just disgraceful.

  23. [Maybe the ALP could have an essay competition with the winner getting preselection for a safe Labor seat? Might get better results then some of the existing logs.]

There are plenty of Coalition logs, too. I was making a point about finding a seat for Wong, not analysing the quality of the respective government and opposition backbenches.

  24. The thing is that when asked they just keep on promising that they have no other plans!

What are they gonna change to pay off the debt? What are they going to say when that turns out to have a downside for someone…?

  25. SHOWS ON 3445

I have always suspected but now convinced you are stark raving mad

BTW We don’t need more posters to post pure drivel in bulk

  26. Maybe the Liberal Democrats price for repealing the carbon price will be SSM.

At least something good would come of what to me seems criminal in its shorsightedness

  27. bluepill

I see that you are more than happy to assume the worst of others in their reasons for doing things while taking umbrage at anyone who does the same of you. You speak of our polarised thinking and then immediately follow it up with talk of the insincerity of the the Greens and the ALP while telling me that the Liberal’s insincerity doesn’t matter. You’re the one that keeps bringing up your position on the centre right to constrast with the left. Your posts have all ended (even before my replies) with a snipe at what you’ve already determined to be “indoctrination by our parties” (to paraphrase).

  28. let me get this right. we have an uneducated shitstirring simpleton running this country. his advisers are not much better. he thinks in fictional binary oppositions (goodies/baddies, climate, gender, good/bad, economy). he exemplies the worse features of our society and panders to those. he has long passed self knowledge sufficient to change. and some contributors here gloat without shame. has there been a worse australian pm (my first and last use of term in his context, he is illegimate for reasons will not repeat).

for record both gillard and rudd whatever marking stand head and shoulders above this thuggish incumbent.

god save australia cos only he/she can

  29. [ till at least 2018-9. ]
Crap start though, so far all they have done is hit the ground lying, admitted they are incompetent and piled on Liberal debt. No indication as yet that they have cracked how to make magic pudding economics work.

  30. [SHOWS ON 3445

    Thank you, now piss off.

  31. OC

God your butt must hurt so bad if your still trolling around looking for anti Rudd stuff.

Still waiting for Gillard’s apology by the way.
