Morgan phone poll: Gillard approval slump

Roy Morgan has published leadership ratings from a phone survey of 680 respondents conducted on Tuesday and Wednesday, and it shows Julia Gillard taking a solid hit. Gillard’s approval is down 12 points to 46 per cent and her disapproval up 10 to 37 per cent, while Tony Abbott is now equal on approval with Gillard, having risen four points to 46 per cent, and down eight on disapproval to 40 per cent. Abbott has also narrowed his preferred prime minister deficit from 58-29 to 48-33. The shifts are compared with last week’s phone poll, which showed what seemed an excessive 55.5-44.5 two-party Labor lead. While the consistency in shifts towards Abbott and away from Gillard seems consistent with the idea that sampling issues at least partly explain the size of the change, it should be noted that Monday’s Newspoll also showed significant falls in Gillard’s personal ratings. There has been chatter about a looming 50-50 two-party result from Morgan, which would seem consistent with the figures provided.

My federal election guide will be unveiled in all its glory today, work on which has prevented me from providing more than sporadic coverage of late. Hopefully that will now improve.

  1. [Shorten on ABC24: Will they ask him the question, “”How does it feel to have blood on your hands!” ?]

Yes they will. He’ll bat it away and then will speak well on the topic of disabilities.

Regardless of his role in Rudd’s demise, he is a great speaker and does the government and the cause of disability awareness a great service.

  2. I’d be one of the few left who still has a copy of Ellis’s book, the one that got pulped after the legal action from Costello.

  3. The Big Ship, you are a welcome addition to the many fine posters here. There is only one thing worse than a drunk old Labor rat and that is a pretend Labor rat. Bob appears to have lost the plot in recent years, he is pathetic, will do or say anything for a little more limelight.

  4. The last time I checked Maribyrnong was the most Catholic seat in the country. It’s the home of the McManuses and used to be a stronghold of the DLP. Curiously, I believe it’s never had a Catholic MP.

  5. [Ellis hates everything equally]

Well just remember, this is the same guy who did the SA ALP a great service in March by going on record as saying that the government’s shrinking lead was just due to whingers who have no life and were stuck at home during the summer. I know he was trying to help, but him essentially calling concerned voters losers and whingers really fed into the opposition narrative of the government being arrogant and out of touch.

In other words, he can take his advice and stick it.

  6. [Dumbest comment of the day award. She has been glued to Julia and Bill today with the disability announcements.]
And Jenny withstood a shockingly aggressive partisan attack from “interviewer’ Kieran Gilbert on SkyNews this morning. The lady didn’t flinch.

  7. Shorten on ABC24: Will they ask him the question, “”How does it feel to have blood on your hands!” ?

Shorten should tell the questioner that they are a damned impertinence and that he would gladly have his integrity compared with theirs.

  8. [Shorten on ABC24: Will they ask him the question, “”How does it feel to have blood on your hands!” ?]

They just did and he started crying, resigned his seat and begged Kevin Rudd to return to the leadership.

    [Cybercynic @495:

In terms of the phot shopped photos of Julia today.

I actually prefer this photo of Tony Abbott and his Twin. (Phoney & Gospel)

The heading says “west Virgina Moutain Men” (which probably explains La Trioli’s fascination with the budgies) ..

Jeez, CC, if I was you I wouldn’t be going on too much about unflattering photos… sheesh…a face only a mother could love. I reckon you’d qualify for a transplant if that’s what you really look like.]

Fortunately BB thats not my face… though some would say it does represent an improvement .. 🙂

  10. [They just did and he started crying, resigned his seat and begged Kevin Rudd to return to the leadership.]

And I hear he endorsed TP to replace him!

  11. First question on ABC24 to Shorten “If your child is just turning seven is it going to miss out all together?”
Answer should be “If the Coalition gets in no child will have anything extra”.
Can they not give any credit to the government?

I followed this case closely and I have to tell you that I was disguested that the 2 who drove the van got away without any penalty. I understand that judges have to make difficult decision and they have to take all factors into consideration. However, these drivers drove for about 10 hours in stinking hot weather and they did not have the decency to open the van and check on the poor soul. Righfully or wrongfully, I get the feeling that Aboroginal life does not mean much to white people.

  13. Two things on the Liberals Carbon Tax ad:

    1. Isn’t it the Liberal Party’s line that Labor doesn’t have a plan for climate change. This advertisement implies that they do/will.

    2. I wonder how Malcolm Turnbull and the other moderate Liberals around Australia will feel about this advertisement being shown.

  14. i am able to stream 24/7 through the computer why not try it so you know whats happening here help to be out of the bubble here.

  15. adam, As you’d know the drivers didn’t even stop fot a toilet break. Without any fear of exaggeration a dog would have been treated better.

  16. Bill shorten is on now very very good, now you will al go him well we saw nothing of him while kev was pm and people said where are his minister why doesnt he let them talk well now they are. it great to see these people the public also need to see them

“Where has Jenny Macklin been lately?”

Jenny and Sharon Burrows ACTU were some of prime movers FOR a PPL over many years & Labor Conferenses , and they both publicly said Julia’s ‘anti PPL story’ is crap….do not recall seeing that MSN or TV Headlined as a rebut to Laurie Oake’s lie

  18. Lib GBNT Ad:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PRCw8fHfh7k

Cool. It’ll help fight the myth that we aren’t doing anything about the environment.

I love their stock photos of “everyday Australians” – maybe they could do another slideshow with the narration “We’ll screw him over. Her over. He might be rich, so I dunno… oh we’re definitely going to screw her over!”

  19. weird CC ad, given labor hasnt proposed a carbon tax, but glad the libs are helping Labor earn green preferences. i would have thought Labor weak on climate change but we’ll act would have been better

and why does GBNT never get questions whereas moving forward got a bollocking

  20. adam abdool.

How can a person be left in the back of a van without being checked on in all that time. It is more than just negligent. It was a totally disregard for the person they were transporting. Very shameful really.

  21. Yes BH (576), both the Gruen Transfer and the Chaser gang helped the Libs last night.

In Adelaide, The Advertiser complained that SA was being neglected by the leaders.

Julia came and their front page was “Thanks for nothing”. Now Abbott is here and will announce a water plan that they’ll salivate over.

  22. [How can a person be left in the back of a van without being checked on in all that time.]

Especially knowing the air con was not working. 🙁

  23. [You would.]

I am merely stating a fact.

    It’s simple.

Uses Ms Gillard’s language against her well.

The only thing missing is how the Coalition will reduce the boat arrivals?

  24. [First question on ABC24 to Shorten “If your child is just turning seven is it going to miss out all together?”
Answer should be “If the Coalition gets in no child will have anything extra”.
Can they not give any credit to the government?]

bk do you agree with me that 24/7 is good for labor because people see it from the horses mouth. and soon as the politician stops and the commentators talk i turn off the sound. and today Julia has repeated and repeated as many policies as she can

i am so fed up with the negativity on this site you all should go back read it.
i wonder if some people may be actually from the other side

Bill Shorten is very good Howard had no successors we have to allow our younger minister to speak and get to know the public and they them
I am very impressed with him Good on you Mr. Shorten tell them where to go

If you do not stream and write here to you have rocks in your head or its in the sand

  25. [We were wrong. The blood on his hands question was the last one.]

And he totally ignored the question and stayed on message – which is good 🙂

  26. afternoon live this may be hard for some old fashioned people re technology but
its very good to do. I am very pleased Belinda neal has done what she had done
she should be contratulated she is actully doing a good thing for labor
not sulky etc. and now there is no story for the abc or any one
    good on ya Belinda

  27. my say.

You have to understand the polls are tightening and the media is not helping. There is a rat in the Labor ranks, and quite rightly frustration is building.

  28. [Julia came and their front page was “Thanks for nothing”. Now Abbott is here and will announce a water plan that they’ll salivate over.]

That’s what I was saying before. I will report tomorrow’s headline here when I learn it (if it’s relevant to Abbott)

My guess: Welcome to Adelaide Tony! (accompanied by a photo of him joined by some locals – or children) and the intro line will say something tte of “Tony Abbott touches down in Adelaide amongst adoring fans as he states his case for why he should be PM”

  29. adam abdool.

It wasn’t reported very much in Melbourne from what I could gather, but I did hear a little about it. Truly shameful.

  30. TSOP.

We have spoken previously regarding the SA state election. Rann got a horrible run, but he still managed to hold.

Let’s hope SA will deliver bonuses.

  31. my say

“i am so fed up with the negativity on this site you all should go back read it.
i wonder if some people may be actually from the other side”

I certainly hope some people on here are from the ‘other’ side. I did not realise pollbludger was the ALP cheersquad. It would be pretty boring if it was 100% uncritical labor barraking.

  32. [Yes BH (576), both the Gruen Transfer and the Chaser gang helped the Libs last night.]

I disagree. Neither side was spared, particularly. I certainly doubt whether anyone from either side will be changing their vote over either programme.

  33. Good lord. I stepped in the door, turned on the tv, and there was Abbott talking about gangs and knives. I knew it was only a matter of time before they stooped to that kind of base populism.

And then Agenda started with more scaremongering over the ‘leak’. And then they said they were going to speak to Robb. And Andrew Bolt’s in the studio. I can’t imagine anything interesting happening there at all.

For the first time since the campaign started, I’ve lost interest. I turned it off!

Victoria i do but there is no good complaining here if a person comes here that is a swinging voter what do you think
not a good look i would say.
so i will not be posting any comment here except what i see that is good
not entering in to any debates re Kevin or bill shorten or any one
    the main game is Julia.
sorry but i am very straight talking person and this site is very very morbid
it does not have to be like that labor have very good policies it s up to us to help
    not talk among our selves.

i used to belong to a quilting click but i lasted there 6 months. the subjects just went round in circles nothing achieved

  35. [Andrew Robb is now and expert on Gangs. Give me a break.]

He has experience. In his youth, he spent a lot of his time in da ‘hood! Pimpin’ and shootin’ cops and getting high by staring at the sun.

Underestimate Robb at your peril. He is a bad mutherf….
