Palin versus Biden debate thread

Call it as you see it here. The purpose of this thread is to quarantine the kind of partisan name-calling that is the hallmark of live debate discussion from the main thread, so I won’t quite be holding commenters up to this site’s normal high standards. The other thread remains open for those wishing to discuss the presidential race more broadly.

  1. Palin’s answer along similar lines and the worm is positive but men below women and neither as high as they were for Biden …..

  2. [Palin answers Biden …. “Uhm, [silence] , er ……” and in about 4 seconds, starts her answer .. .meanwhile the worm tanks …… (talking about exit strategies from Iraq I believe)]
It’s because she had run out of talking points that were remotely relevant to the question.

  3. Palin says “Wasilla Main street” – men drop +20 to +10, women drop slightly less but both recover back to pre bogan cliche level relatively quickly.

Men dont seem to trust Biden on Tax and have started to go negative when he starts mentioning it before recovering as the answer goes on

  4. Possum @ 146: , I think it is called the ” Sean Connery” effect. My sisters would gladly leave their husbands for a night with Mr C. Can’t see why myself.? Maybe Joe is having that effect also. !

  5. This does raise the question of whether Obama’s decision not to make Clinton VP was a huge mistake.

I can’t imagine her letting Palin get away with dodging every answer like this.

  6. [This does raise the question of whether Obama’s decision not to make Clinton VP was a huge mistake.]

Palin wouldn’t have been picked if Clinton was VP

  7. [I can’t imagine her letting Palin get away with dodging every answer like this.]

Biden’s not there to attack Palin – he’s there to attack McCain. And he’s getting free shots at McCain, because Palin’s responses are scripted…

  8. [This does raise the question of whether Obama’s decision not to make Clinton VP was a huge mistake.]
I don’t think so, Biden is doing fine.

  9. The fact that anyone in the USA takes Palin seriously as a VP reflects an empire in steep decline. Quality is meaningless. Self indulgence everything.

Must be demeaning for Biden, to have to be on stage with a high school kid and take her seriously. She succeeds is she doesn’t wet her pants and smiles.
I think that Palin is even in the equation makes a joke of American policitics. If Palin is even remotely qualified for VP then each of us here is doubly qualified.

  10. Men consistently dont buy the Palin narrative. Women only move with nice words like education and healthcare when she speaks.

She says American Exceptionalism and the Ohio undecideds have a bit of an orgasm.

  11. It is obvious now that Palin has been instructed: “Just throw in a fluffy answer to any question and then make a pre-prepared statement”

  12. [It is obvious now that Palin has been instructed: “Just throw in a fluffy answer to any question and then make a pre-prepared statement”]

    Then smile.

  13. At Intrade there have been some interesting movements in the “Barack Obama’s Intrade value will increase more than John McCain’s following the VP debate” stock.

It started pre-debate in the 60s, has dropped during the debate to around 40, and is now back up to 58. I think McCain’s value will rise more, simply because he’s coming off such a low base and the low expectations of Palin were already factored into his price

  14. Maybe it’s just me, but the depth of Biden’s knowledge and experience is going to stand him in good stead, whatever the pundits say about who won.

  15. I dont think these Ohio Diallsters believe the McCain campaign narrative on anything. That’s dangerous, but if it’s becoming widespread it certainly explains the polls

  16. What I mean is, Clinton would give the Dems a way to cut through this crap and show that the emperor really has no clothes – the Republicans only real shot is to win on image and perception, because the substance has been and remains appalling. Biden and Obama are both positive types, they don’t like really attacking the other side.

Clinton would have given the Obama ticket real, credible teeth.

And if Palin wouldn’t have been picked if Clinton was on the Obama ticket, maybe that’s another reason Clinton should have got it.

I personally preferred Obama over Clinton, but I am concerned at the inability of the Obama campaign to get the media to report on the reality of the McCain campaign. It is just incredible that this woman continues to be taken seriously by anyone.

  17. Ben Smith at Politico says that Palin has been taught to ignore the question and answer the question you wish you were asked. That can get pretty annoying after 90 minutes.

  18. [the Republicans only real shot is to win on image and perception, because the substance has been and remains appalling.]
Isn’t that the ONLY way the Republicans win? 😀

  19. [Ben Smith at Politico says that Palin has been taught to ignore the question and answer the question you wish you were asked. ]

That works well in a 10 minute interview on the nightly news.

Doesn’t work so well in a 90 minute nationally-televised debate.

Biden’s doing as well as he can. Whether he wins the debate will be another matter entirely…

  20. Just once Gusface – when he was talking about difficulties his children had to face when they lost their mother There’s nothing very funny about that.
