Duke it out here. Those participating in the US election threads are advised that they do so at their own risk.

  1. Hey Catrina – there is still over four months to go – ya can’t throw the towel in now – the team needs ya!

Just play the ball – not the man and Mr Bowe will be sweet.

  2. Gallup Poll: Obama Holds Lead Over McCain

    Key findings:
    * On issues, voters are most concerned about energy and the economy, and they prefer Obama by a double-digit margin on each. He’s favored on taxes, traditionally a Republican strength, and essentially tied with McCain on handling illegal immigration.
    * On personal characteristics, McCain is rated more highly than Obama in just one of 10 categories — as a “strong and decisive leader.”

Wow! That was close. He nearly got ten out of ten

  3. the best contribution to debate here has been the replacement of punctuation with the new grammatical concept, the “chirp”. You can use chirps in place of commas and full stops, not to mention other obsolete devices like the long lost semi-colon.

You’re the one doing the Harriet Christian impersonation….and doing it well.

Racism is ugly to watch. Thank heavens the youth are moving beyond it.

I’ll let Chris answer for himself but my two cents worth are:

The generally conservative nature of the US is Obama’s biggest threat. For example, the US has a majority (or near to it) that believe in creation over evolution.

The naivity and parochialism of the US is furtile ground for a negative campain. It has won GWB the last two elections – and look what damage that has wrought upon the world. I worry that the same narrow minded fears can elect the republicans again.

But, I think this turn is different, the abject failure of the Bush adminstration has broken the mould. The same fear campaign cannot be cast again.

Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!”

Dio, the first couple of minutes of your first linked clip at 1577 (up till his speard arm bow) are the most wonderful anti-bullshit comedy I’ve ever witnessed. George Carlin was a courageous comedian who never tugged a forelock, doffed his cap or spoke anything but truth to power.
    Posted this farewell at C&L:

“Great to note a couple of commenters mentioning Richard Pryor and Lenny Bruce on this vale thread because George Carlin was right up there with them.
Mr.Carlin was brilliantly creative and outrageously funny like Lenny, and he projected the physical comedy of Pryor. The smarts, the moves and the chops; George had it all.
Condolences to his immediate friends and family. Mr. Carlin has left us much of his legacy in cyberspace…… Love ya, George.”

“Parrot”? “”Waste of space”? Oh, boo-hoo.

So this is the way he who runs this site responds to concern about double standards?? And he is talking about decency??

Well done William, youve lost 2 bloggers in one night. If you keep going you might just even up the numbers here for Ron and Co. Adios

  8. 1579 Diogenes Says:
‘I find the comments about Ron’s grammar patronising to a great contributor.’

How PC Dio & more power to you but for many it’s just the door marked Enter…

& Ron, ‘agree with the gotcha stuff’; what? “Groupthink” back in vogue? Can’t be true.

Alas, poor Pancho…‘and i think a NZ er too’…that’s easy ron, just tell him to ‘go back to his crappy country’ eh?

  9. been out for a few hours , thought drop by and then off

FINNS “Amigo Ron, Swanees gave heart attack on Saturday sometime in Canberra’s chill”.

3rd quarter yep , but came home with a swanee wind there My team had another win as well so the tape has been used a few times since , although Diogenes was abit cheeky early in day seeing both of his sides lost so thoght I’d mention that

And for the rest of the day , hell , the cut & thrust of PB and Andrew has taken his bat with a tantrem he made himself an twice during the nite tried to burn anither on the way , no feel for others there The Panch got bowled middle stump by a late inswinger , but has apealed to Bucknor against the light And Catrina is considering EC’s request Also intersting about poor Andrew , the moderator gives him a little slap and he acted alittle too hasty and now forever he’s lost all the benefits of PB of our friendly company , and GG’s of course

and CodgY , nah , he wanted to watch NZ in a rugga game one nity, and yu codgY are a believer in the GroupThink i ee

  10. William,
As a dedicated lurker, currently in the UK, I ask you humbly to forgive and forget. During the most exciting stages of selecting a candidate, Catrina provided regular updates on the contest throughout the night, invaluable for those of us om the northern hemisphere. It was greatly appreciated by many of us.
