Morgan SMS poll: 52-48 to Labor in Victoria

A sharp movement to the Coalition in the latest Victorian election SMS poll from Roy Morgan, bringing it into line with the recent Galaxy result.

Another Morgan SMS poll, a very current one conducted from Friday to today from a sample of 1173. While the level of support recorded for the Greens might cause one to harbour doubts about this series, the movements recorded in this poll are interesting: the Coalition is up no less than 4.5% on the last poll to 39.5%, with both Labor and the Greens down two points to 33.5% and 17.5%. On every measure, this is the best result for the Coalition out of the five such polls conducted since last September. Even so, Labor maintains a 52-48 lead on two-party preferred, down from 55-45. Denis Napthine has gained the lead as preferred premier, now 51.5-48.5 ahead after Daniel Andrews led 52.5-47.5 last time.

Victorian election minus one week

Press reports continue to indicate that both sides believe it to be very tight in the crucial sandbelt seats, but statewide published polls still show Labor on course for a comfortable victory.

First up, the arrival of two new poll results – one from Galaxy and one from Morgan, both of which are detailed here – has enabled my first update in some time to the Victorian election poll tracker on the sidebar. I’ve tinkered a bit with my methodology, which is the reason the Greens are off a little despite more than holding up in the latest polls. Other than that, the poll tracker has never failed to show Labor on 50 seats since it opened for business at the start of the campaign.

The charts get a bit messy with the flurry of polling to hit during the election campaign, so to allow you a closer look (and to illustrate the point that you’re not really missing much), here they are with the x-axis limited to the start of August (click to enlarge):

Elsewhere:

John Ferguson of The Australian offered yet another review of the seat-level state of play as seen by his sources in the major parties on Wednesday. Both sides are said to have detected a “small but significant” swing back to the Liberals in Frankston, with the Liberals apparently hopeful that a double-figures result for Geoff Shaw will send a strong flow of preferences their way. Furthermore, the Liberals are reported to be hopeful or better about the other sandbelt seats of Bentleigh, Carrum and Mordialloc, which I list in what I take to be descending order of confidence. However, Labor is doing “better than expected” in Ripon, although it is still expected to fall to the Liberals (not, be it noted, the Nationals).

• One place where early Liberal hopes appear to have faded is Ballarat, particularly the seat of Buninyong, formerly Ballarat East. Further complicating their task is Nationals candidate Sonia Smith, who has criticised Liberal candidate Ben Taylor over comments he made at an Australian Christian Lobby forum concerning late-term abortions, saying he “should be running for Family First”. While the Nationals’ official how-to-vote card for the electorate directs the second preference to Taylor, Smith has registered her own card instructing voters to determine the matter for themselves. Smith illustrated her rejection of her party’s how-to-vote card through a dramatic photo opportunity for Fairfax.

• Inform your upper house speculation with Antony Green’s preference calculators. Part of me would be sad to see reform to our broken upper house electoral systems purely because it would put an end to these delightful contributions to Australian psephology.

UPDATE: Another Morgan SMS poll, a very current one conducted from Friday to today from a sample of 1173. While one might be tempted to take this series with a grain of salt, the results are interesting: the Coalition is up no less than 4.5% on the last poll to 39.5%, with both Labor and the Greens down two points to 33.5% and 17.5%. However, Labor maintains a 52-48 lead on two-party preferred, down from 55-45. Denis Napthine has gained the lead as preferred premier, now 51.5-48.5 ahead after Daniel Andrews led 52.5-47.5 last time. The previous poll was conducted on Wednesday and Thursday, so I guess Morgan will be doing this polling every down from now on.

Galaxy: 52-48 to Labor in Victoria

The first Victorian state poll conducted in over a week finds Labor retaining its long-established lead, while offering at least a gimmer of hope for the Napthine government.

The Herald-Sun brings us a Victorian election poll conducted on Tuesday and Wednesday, providing us with the first statewide result from a polling period more recent than the Sunday before last. The Galaxy poll of 924 respondents has Labor leading 52-48, which you can either interpet as indicating no change since the last Galaxy poll three weeks ago, which had the same result, or a slight narrowing in Labor’s lead given the general tendency of early campaign polling to come in higher than that, and the pollster’s general lack of a clear house bias. On the primary vote, Labor is up a point to 39%, with the Coalition and the Greens steady on 40% and 13%.

UPDATE: Roy Morgan’s third SMS poll of the campaign offers a dose of cold water for that glimmer of hope I referred to in the post header. The poll was conducted from 1042 respondents over the last two nights, and it finds Labor’s lead up to 55-45 from 53.5-46.5 from the last poll, which was conducted from Friday to Monday of the week before last. The poll’s hard-to-credit vote for the Greens has gone still higher, from 18.5% to 19.5%, with both major parties down on the primary vote: Labor by half a point to 35.5%, the Coalition by three to 35%. This would seem to be partly to do with a change in the question structure to include the Australian Sex Party among the response options, which comes in at 3%.

Victorian election open thread

With ten days to go, Denis Napthine and Daniel Andrews face a purposefully low-profile “people’s forum” which, barring mishaps, is unlikely to make much difference.

As I type, the one debate-like event of the Victorian election campaign, a “people’s forum” being held in Frankston, is starting. It can be viewed on the Herald-Sun site. So now would seem an opportune time to correct the issue that there’s no obvious current thread for the Victorian campaign.

Victorian upper house preference tickets

The preference arrangements for the Victorian Legislative Council demystified, to the extent that that’s possible.

The group voting ticket preferences for the Victorian election are now available, although not in a terribly straightforward way. The Victorian Electoral Commission has published them as an unwieldy XML file in lieu of something more user-friendly which will be up tomorrow, although Daniel Beratis in comments has been able to locate files on their site which display them in ballot paper form. However, a more user-friendly option is available courtesy of Antony Green, who has the preferences listed in order on PDFs.

Over the next hour or two, I will be progressively performing my usual trick of detailing the effective preference orderings for each party in each region, which is to say that candidates certain to win (usually but not always the top two on the Labor and Coalition tickets) will be excluded from consideration. At the time I write this I only have Eastern Metropolitan to offer, but the others will be added progressively in alphabetical order (UPDATE: All done now). This is a complex business, so if you see any errors, please let me know.

Galaxy: 52-48 to Liberal in Bentleigh, 54-46 to Labor in Buninyong

The Sunday Herald-Sun brings two new electorate-level Victorian state polls from Galaxy, one of which is the Liberals’ best poll result in a very long time.

Today’s Sunday Herald-Sun carries two electorate-level polls by Galaxy, which I presume to be automated phone polls, one of which is by some distance the Liberals’ best poll of the campaign:

• A poll of 706 respondents in Bentleigh, one of the crucial “sandbelt” marginals and the decisive seat in the Coalition’s 2010 election victory, has the Liberals leading 52-48, compared with their existing margin of 0.9%. The primary votes are 48% for Liberal incumbent Elizabeth Miller (compared with 47.2% in 2010), 35% for Labor candidate Nick Staikos (38.5%) and 11% for the Greens (unchanged), with Denis Napthine holding a 49-28 lead over Daniel Andrews as preferred premier.

• It’s a different story in Buninyong, hitherto known as Ballarat East, where a poll of 527 respondents has Labor’s 1.6% margin opening out to a two-party lead of 54-46. The primary votes are 40% for Labor incumbent Geoff Howard (40.9% in 2010), 37% for Liberal candidate Ben Taylor (42.5% in 2010), 6% for the Nationals (who didn’t run last time) and 13% for the Greens (11.3% in 2010). Here Napthine and Andrews were tied at 38-38 all on preferred premier.

Victorian election minus two weeks

Topics for today: the drawing of ballot papers, the proliferation of Legislative Council chancers, a speed bump for Labor in Ivanhoe, poll aggregation, and bookies’ seat odds.

With two more weeks to go:

• The ballot paper draws were conducted today, and my Victorian election guide has now been brought up to speed with full candidate lists in ballot paper order. I have also added updates to individual entries, where applicable, with the information you will have read on my blog posts, assuming you’ve been following them. As Antony Green’s number-crunching demonstrates, the 545 lower house candidates represents 6.2 per electorate, up from 502 and 5.7 in 2010. Family First, the Democratic Labour Party and the Sex Party are contesting fewer seats, but the void has been field by 30 Australian Christians candidates (compared with two in 2010), 32 from Rise Up Australia (who were not around four years ago), Voice for the West (14 candidates in Melbourne’s western suburbs) and more independents (up from 75 to 91). This growth pales in comparison to that for the Legislative Council, where an average of a little over seven columns per region in 2010 has swollen to over 17. The deadline for submission of group ticket preferences is noon on Sunday; they will be published by the Victorian Electoral Commission shortly after.

• The most notable late entry to the contest is former Labor MP Craig Langdon, who will run as an independent in his old seat of Ivanhoe. Langdon bowed out in 2010 after losing preselection to present incumbent, Anthony Carbines. John Ferguson of The Australian reports that Langdon will direct preference against Labor in what is described, a little excessively I feel, as a “crucial marginal electorate”.

The Australian today reports that a Liberal internal poll found 54% of respondents supported the East West Link project, with 24% opposed and 22% undecided.

• I have updated the BludgerTrack Victoria poll aggregate on the sidebar with the Ipsos and Morgan SMS poll results, not that you’d notice the difference. Note that the date identified on the display is November 9, as none of the actual poll results have been any more recent than that.

Kevin Bonham has an extensive post on the finer points of the horse race, including modelled result probabilities for individual seat outcomes using much the same method as BludgerTrack: an assumed uniform swing, but with adjustments made at the individual seat level for retiring sitting members and sophomore surge. Whereas I’m lazily using the adjustments from my federal model, Kevin’s are based on historical state-level observation, and thus reflect the undoubted fact of sitting member factors being greater in smaller state electorates. I thought it might be instructive to lay out the Coalition win probabilities for the key seats alongside each other, together with the implied probabilities of the betting odds from Centrebet/SportingBet (who were offering the same odds on every seat I looked at) and Sportsbet (who weren’t – arbitrage hunters take note).

Some big caveats need to be applied here to both my figures and Kevin’s. Our objective is to reach accurate totals, and in this we trust that local peculiarities will cancel each other out. Neither of us, I’m sure, would be taking our probability estimates for Ripon to the bank. Our probabilities are also based on the proverbial “election held today”, and do not factor in extra uncertainty for what might transpire over the next two weeks. Note also that the betting market probabilities are boiled down to the two-party contest, excluding the allowance in the bookies’ odds for seats being won by minor parties and independents. Blue indicates a seat defended by a Liberal sitting member, red by Labor, black by neither. All told, the picture that emerges is that the betting markets are taking a more moderate view of Labor’s prospects than the polls.

Fairfax-Ipsos: 56-44 to Labor in Victoria

After talking themselves up over the past few days, another poll finds the Coalition in Victoria still on course for a drubbing – although the poll may be showing its age.

The second Fairfax-Ipsos poll for the Victorian state election campaign is very much like the last, in that it has delivered a shocking headline result for the government (56-44 to Labor, just as before) which turns out on closer inspection to have more to do with minor party and independent flows than anything too radical on the primary vote. Labor has gained two points on the last poll to draw level on the primary vote with the Coalition, who are steady at 39%, with the Greens down a point off an implausibly high reading of 17% last time. If preference flows from the previous election are used, Labor’s lead turns out to be 53-47, just as it was last time. Encouragingly for Labor, Daniel Andrews has gained three points on approval to 40% and is down five on disapproval to 37%, while Denis Napthine is down one on each measure to 46% and 37%. Napthine’s lead as preferred premier has narrowed from 47-38 to 46-37. At some point tomorrow, I’ll do an update of the poll tracker on the sidebar to encompass this result and the Morgan SMS poll that was published earlier in the week.

However, there’s a bit of a fly in the ointment with the Ipsos poll: it was conducted a week ago, from Thursday to Sunday, and for whatever reason The Age sat on the result even as its relevance vanished into the ether. There have been reports over the past day or two of internal polling recording a shift back to the Coalition throughout the present week, and of the Liberal Party being buoyed by the response to the negative advertising blitz it unleashed on Sunday. Whether or not this is actually the case is the burning question of the moment, and to this the poll provides no answer.

In other news

The close of nominations is at noon tomorrow, to be followed by the ballot paper draw. Then at noon on Sunday comes the deadline for submission of group voting tickets for the Legislative Council, which should be published for our perusal later in the day. Antony Green has been keeping score and observers a two-thirds increase in Legislative Council candidacies with more yet to come, apparently maxing out at 20 columns on the Northern Metropolitan ballot paper (small beer though that may be compared with the 44 columns for the Victorian Senate last year).

Yesterday I published a lengthy post of updates which has very quickly been superseded by this one. Rather than let all that work go to waste, I’m repasting the bulk of it below, without taking the effort to turn any of the various references to “today” into “yesterday”.

The Australian today reports that “support for the Napthine government is starting to increase for the first time in many months”, to the extent that “senior Liberal figures believe the most likely outcome at the election will be either a small government majority or a small Labor majority”. This is said to be corroborated by the internal polling of both parties (although the federal Liberals don’t seem to have been CC’d on the memo, with Patricia Karvelas in The Australian reporting yesterday that most consider the government to be headed for defeat).

• Liberal optimism notwithstanding, The Australian’s report today suggests it is recognised that the government continues to face a tough battle in the crucial “sandbelt” seats of Bentleigh, Mordialloc, Carrum and Frankston. However, a more bullish picture of their prospects was provided by a report on Sunday from James Campbell of the Herald-Sun. Labor sources were cited claiming to be ahead in Bentleigh, “but not by so much as you would put down your glasses”. Mordialloc was deemed by both sides to be too close to call, and the Liberals were actively “confident” about Carrum. However, it appeared to be agreed that Labor was ahead in Frankston. For what little it’s likely to be worth to them, Annika Smethurst of the Herald-Sun reports that Geoff Shaw is likely to direct his preferences to the Liberals.

• The election’s secondary metropolitan flashpoint is the outer north-eastern duo of Yan Yean and Eltham, where Labor has respectively been weakened by redistribution and the retirement of a sitting member. According to today’s report in The Australian, the Liberals believe themselves to be competitive or better in both seats. However, James Campbell’s Herald-Sun report said Labor “swears it will hold Yan Yean”, about which the Liberals were “hopeful but not overly” (likewise the case for Cranbourne on Melbourne’s south-eastern fringe).

• The Coalition conducted its campaign launch in Ballarat on Sunday, signalling hopes of snaring not only the western regional seat of Ripon, where redistribution and the retirement of Labor member Joe Helper have placed them in the box seat, but also Wendouree and Buninyong (known pre-redistribution as Ballarat West and Ballarat East). However, a Liberal source cited by James Campbell’s report said “only Ripon is looking likely with the other two ‘looking hard’“.

• James Campbell also reported that “in Geelong both sides think the most likely outcome is no change”, which I take to suggest that Labor will hold Bellarine but fall short in South Barwon.

• In my previous instalment, I related media reports of polling for the Greens by Lonergan Research showing them leading in Melbourne and Richmond. Full results have been published on the party website: here for Melbourne, and here for Richmond.

• Here’s a taste of that negative Liberal advertising – this in relation to Labor’s CFMEU links (and here’s another concerning the Wonthaggi desalination plant, which enjoyed a helpful front page tie-in from the Herald-Sun on Monday). Also, for the sake of balance, a topical item for the Ballarat market from Labor.
