Two major new federal opinion polls:
• The Australian brings us the first Newspoll result in four weeks, which has Labor with a two-party lead of 56-44, in from 57-43 last time. The primary votes are Labor 36% (steady), Coalition 30% (up one), Greens 12% (steady) and One Nation 9% (up one). Anthony Albanese is up two on approval to 49% and down one on disapproval to 46%, while Sussan Ley is steady at 35% approval and up two on disapproval to 44%. Albanese leads 51-31 on preferred prime minister, shifting from 52-32 last time. The poll was conducted Monday to Thursday from a sample of 1283.
• The monthly Resolve Strategic poll from Nine Newspapers has Labor’s lead at 59-41, out from 56-44 last time, though the primary votes are similar to Newspoll’s: Labor up two to 37%, the Coalition steady on 29%, the Greens steady on 12% and One Nation up one to 9%. Anthony Albanese has nonetheless slipped on his personal ratings, his combined very good and good score down two to 43% with poor and very poor up three to 45%. Sussan Ley is unchanged at 38% and 29% respectively, while Albanese’s lead on preferred prime minister shifts from 40-25 to 41-26. The poll also has “likeability” ratings for various political figures – Albanese has a net result of plus three and Ley plus ten, but beyond that I would want to see what the uncommitted results are, name recognition being an important feature of such findings. The sample was 1800: field work dates are not provided, but last time it was over a seven-day period from Saturday to Friday.

Sorry, but that article is just OTs trying to get access to more funding for OTs (like the “unrecognised” iron deficiency article was a bid for research funding for a minor technical process fluffed up with feels). The OT definition of Long COVID is the nebulous post-infectious fatigue syndrome (which exists but is not responsive to any treatment, much less “therapy” much to the chagrin of the Oxford-based Cochrane studies that defined their own endpoints) not the Long COVID defined by biological parameters of autonomic function or mitochondrial dysfunction. The estimated numbers are bullshit.
Earlier today (8:57), I posted:
“The National Climate Risk Assessment …. has been delayed for political purposes. It is going to be released prior to the announcement of the 2035 target, in order to buttress support for whatever that target might be.”
_______________________________________________________
Minister Bowen confirmed this on Afternoon Briefing:
“Well, there’s two documents. The National Climate Risk Assessment, the National Adaptation Plan. They are linked. They will be released together because the National Climate Risk Assessment informs the National Adaptation Plan. Why are we having this conversation, PK? It’s just worth saying again, legitimate question, but because we initiated this process, the Labor Party, the government. Not because the Greens or anyone else said we should do this. The Albanese Government said we’re going to have a National Risk Assessment and a National Adaptation Plan again during September.”
“Well, because what we’ll be doing is laying out very methodically, not all on one day, but, you know, very methodically. What we have is, as I said, a lot of moving parts at the moment. There’s a National Risk Assessment, National Adaptation Plan, 2035 target, National Net Zero Plan, six sector plans, the COP bid, all leading up to the COP30 in Brazil, as you pointed out. September will be a very, very busy month for those interested in climate, particularly me, and particularly those of you who want to talk to me about those things.”

The ABC and GA live blogs need to do a better job. I shouldn’t have to read the transcript to find this out.
Thought experiment:
Pesutto, having finally wiped his name clear of the moronic debt he was inflicted on by a stupid judge, quits the Liberal Party after the conservatives roll Battin. Unlike the usual standard in Australia, he takes the UK style where it’s expected someone who leaves their party to resign and call a by-election.
He stands as an independent with the by-election in 3 or 4 weeks.
Does he win? Does Labor?

Australia’s capital class remains too focused on profit to truly address productivity

“A key problem with the economic roundtable is many of those hauled in to fix Australia’s productivity black hole have spent the past 25 years gunning for more privatisation”
______________________
Except that there have been fewer privatisations over the past 25 years compared to before that, at least at the Commonwealth level. Only one of note was Medibank Private, more than offset by the creation of a state owned communications infrastructure company (NBNCo) and the effective nationalization of parcel delivery (AusPost acquisition of StarTrack Express).
Plus, non-market (gov + gov funded) jobs have driven more than half of all jobs in the last 5 years, and government spending is its highest as share of the economy since WW2 (save for a single quarter in 2020).
Crikey is poorly served by cutting costs and sourcing cheap content from the disreputable Australia Institute.
Ghost Of Whitlam @ #2303 Monday, August 25th, 2025 – 8:00 pm
I think that would depend on what both Labor and Melissa Lowe do (she was the Teal Independent candidate for 2022 and got 20% of the vote, trailing Labor’s 22.1%).
If Labor stays out and Lowe runs, she’d probably win over Pesutto and the presumptive Liberal candidate (Amelia Hamer or Moira Deeming).
If Labor and Lowe runs, either of them could win, but not Pesutto or the Liberal candidate.
If Lowe doesn’t run and it’s a Liberal-Labor-Pesutto contest, that’s the trickiest scenario to figure out. Presumably Pesutto would come third and his preferences would decide the matter.

I think that’s a little unfair Entropy. P1 has shown over a long period of time that she (I believe it is she not he, but could be wrong) is very committed to addressing climate change and has been very critical of both major parties for not going going far enough with their climate policies, which has got up quite a few noses here at times. I also seem to recall that fairly recently she said when pressed on the issue that if she had to make a choice at the moment she would prefer Labor.

What I didn’t realise at the time was that made it the nation’s third largest generating unit, behind two coal units. When fully commissioned it will be the largest. “But what is more interesting about the Waratah battery is the scale of its flexibility – it can change from being the biggest supplier in the grid, to becoming one of, if not the biggest, load – all in a matter of seconds if required.”

Entropy, I can assure you that, as a member of the Uniting Church, I have no problems with the concept of Jesus turning water into wine. However, for me what is more important is the relationship which Jesus had with the most marginal and vulnerable members of society. Not only do many members of the Uniting Church believe in saving whales, they also believe in being there for the downtrodden, ostracized and those impacted by injustice. Certainly, I have met some in the Uniting Church where these issues are not a priority, and indeed, they are openly antagonistic toward them, however, in this respect I would encourage you to have a look at the Uniting Church Assembly Website and in particular the videos of the current President Rev. Charissa Suli, for a clearer picture of where the Uniting Church stands on social issues.

Methodist don’t like the idea that Jesus turned water into wine as they believe alcohol is evil. So when the Uniting church was formed. The Methodists insisted at the communion grape juice or cordial is used and not fortified spirit. So as that would cause the spread of disease if done in a shared cup. They have individual little cups at their communion.
Entropy, Monday, August 25, 2025 at 10:56 pm:
Entropy, I never knew that! So, the idea isn’t that God couldn’t have turned water into wine, but that he wouldn’t have. I guess John 2 doesn’t get read often in Uniting churches with lots of former Methodists?
BTW, in at least some Catholic dioceses, since COVID, communion is only taken under the species of bread and not of wine, for similar public health reasons.
Entropy,
With respect to being “big believers in end of days theology”, from my experience, unlike the Seventh Day Adventist church, there is very little focus on end times theology amongst Uniting Church theologians. Indeed, it is almost as if they avoid preaching from the book of Revelation if at all possible. I recently delivered a message as part of a church service, where I encouraged the members of the congregation not to focus on the ramifications of the possibility that we are entering into the “last days”, what is important is how we live our lives today, regardless of whether Jesus’s “second coming” was next week or in a thousand years time.
