In an otherwise quiet week for federal polling, the Financial Review reports a Wolf + Smith poll of 5000 respondents conducted from July 18 to 30 has Labor with a 57-43 lead on two-party preferred. All we are told of the primary vote is that Labor leads the Coalition 36% to 30%: I will hopefully be able to offer more information later today. Anthony Albanese is credited with a fairly modest lead over Sussan Ley on preferred prime minister of 45-35. The poll also finds 18% support and 47% oppose broadening the base of the GST. Respondents were seemingly also given options on how cuts in income tax should be funded, with 56% favouring higher company taxes. Wolf & Smith is associated with Yaron Finkelstein, a former principal private secretary to Scott Morrison and Crosby Textor strategist, which was last heard from through a similarly large-sample poll in August last year.
Wolf + Smith: 57-43 to Labor (open thread)
A new federal poll records similar results to others of Labor’s post-election honeymoon, and finds predictably little appetite for a broadened GST base.

What happens with Fatima Payman now that Albanese has decided to recognise Palestine as a state? I don’t think she’ll rejoin the party, but looking back at the situation that lead to her resignation from Labor, it does feel like that debacle could have been avoided. At the very least it seems like Labor unnecessarily shot themselves in the foot over something that would’ve happened regardless.’

No-one shot themselves in the foot, IMO.

So you believe OPEC is “mythical”?
If I am wrong, then I am disgraced, and I will willfully commit seppuku. But I am certain that Rex Douglas is not referring to OPEC in his incessant and inane utterances of “fossil fuel cartel”. I infer that he has an insidious conspiracy in mind (I employ this term loosely), in which the Australian government is somehow entangled.
My katana is secure in its sheath and will remain unbloodied.
In other news, I see that Sussan Ley and the Coalition intend to axe the Palestinian recognition when next in power.
Well, with that line of thinking, by the time the Liberals next win government, the Israelis and Palestinians will have fallen madly in love and live happily ever after.
Further to BK’s earlier comments, the ASX closed at a record high today, confirming the absurdity of Ted O’Briens’s comments. So mortgagees and retirees are both better off today.
“ The ASX 200 set another record close, rising 0.4 per cent to 8,800 points, while the Australian dollar fell against the US dollar after the RBA decision.”

This is unfortunately the opinion about major Asian countries like Indonesia, India and China i.e. that there is grinding poverty in those countries and their leaders are grandstanding when they are talking to western countries. You can that condescension amongst lot of people in …..(some people may think I am…. bashing).

You’d have to ask Rex which fossil fuel cartel he is referring to specifically, but the point is that fossil fuel cartels are not “mythical” at all. Nor is there only one. However, OPEC+ is perhaps the largest of the cartels, controlling more than 40% of global production. As such, it plays the largest single role of any cartel in setting both supply and international oil prices. Including ours, which even if it is not actually supplied by OPEC, will be priced according to OPEC prices.
In other words, whether or not our oil actually comes from OPEC companies (some does and some does not) the supply will be determined by a fossil fuel cartel and the price will be determined by a fossil fuel cartel.
Get your katana back out.
I also see that Australia is close to signing a deal with Vanuatu worth $500 million for strategic positioning ahead of China in the region.
This follows an agreement with PNG worth many millions to establish their own Rugby League team.
Yep, we wouldn’t want China, or Russia for that matter, to operate a military base close to our shores – no sirree!

A little bit of data from Roy Morgan regarding WFH.
The reason the LNP had to backtrack real quick in Feb/Mar, is because it isn’t Canberra which has the highest proportion of WFH’ers. It’s actually Sydney.
Link: https://www.roymorgan.com/findings/9981-work-from-home-june-2025
”
Now I see why Dutton went full steam ahead with the idea to repeal WFH. It is because 56% in Adelaide, 57% in Brisbane and 60% in Perth do not WFH.
He thought people who don’t WFH will be envious ……It is really a Baldrick’s cunning plan.
====================================
It was an own goal of the Libs, via silly Senator Jane Hume.
I now understand why Dutton was very quick to say it only applied to Canberra public servants. He was obviously shown data that suggested workers in Sydney & Melbourne were worried by the policy, and he was trying to “quarantine” Hume’s comments. As we know, Sydney & Melb are much bigger than Canberra, meaning they have more seats in Federal Parliament.
The irony of all this is that Hume remains in Parliament, and Dutton is out.
That must hurt.

Yes. It does get out of control sometimes. I have had my own “joyful moments” here, as have others.
Regardless, I don’t usually hang around of an evening, except for Newspoll nights. I have placed myself on “loon watch”, after what D&M had to put up with yesterday evening. So I take it that it is perfectly fine for Ukraine to join NATO (an organisation where countries sign a pact to tag team against Russia in case of a war), given that they share a large border?
No wonder we have a war in Ukraine!
nath have you ever seen an old Australian film called “Ground Zero” with Colin Friels?
SPOILER ALERT
The protagonist’s dad was a film maker and the evidence (the lost minute of film) was concealed inside the centre of the reel’s spindle.
You have to go deep.
The conservative principle would be that a country has the perfect right to join whatever alliance it chooses without this giving another country the axiomatic right to invade said country.
The elision here is between ‘in case of war’ and said alliance ‘actually invading’ said neighbour
I think I have Omar, but a long time ago.
When Trump and Putin make a deal to end the war in Ukraine, Trump should agree that;
a) Ukraine never joins NATO,
b) Russia can keep the Russian-speaking territories already annexed. and
c) Zelensky, who became president under a regime change operation of the US, resigns.
Then you will have peace!

You see its like wanting to get out of an abusive relationship. The abuser doesn’t accept no for an answer, so instead you gotta find another partner to protect you.
The new partner has no interest in starting shit with the abuser if they don’t need too.
good luck nath and good luck controlling this rabble, you’ll need it.

NATO was established to defend member nations against Russian aggression. This might be because Russian dictators have a predilection for invading neighbouring nations. No wonder we have a war in Ukraine!

Yes, Chump is gaga. Note the big grin from the blonde bimbo standing next to him. The acolytes know he’s nuts but they just go along with it. And as the commentator said, a room full of journalists and not one queries the comment. The US is going down the gurgler and no one to blame but themselves, the politicians, the judiciary, and the media who we thought was supposed to hold people to account.
Putin’s staff will be seeing all this stuff in the Internet. Putin will be pissing himself with laughter. I hope Chump continues his practice of having a room full of journalists on hand. I will be watching Putin. He is normally deadpan so watch the corners of his mouth very closely.
Then you will have peace!
Indeed. Peace of our time. Appeasement has never failed. Why should it fail now?
Entropy, assuming that is your real name, it’s outrageous for you to slur the moderator like that, I hope you take that back.
It should be blindingly obvious to anyone even slightly following the situation that when someone refers to the “Jewish Lobby”, they are not talking about ordinary Jewish people, but rather about the cashed up right-wing pressure groups who work to destroy the reputations and careers of any public figure who dares to suggest that the IDF should perhaps cut down on their brutal murder of civilians, children, and journalists. Not only are these sociopathic ghouls actively running interference for a state that is enthusiastically committing genocide, they are also ultimately making life harder for the ordinary, decent people who make up the vast majority of the world’s Jewish population by weaponising the anti-semetism label to point of rendering it near meaningless, thereby making it harder to combat all the very real instances of anti-semetism happening right now.
Of course, people like TPOF are informed enough to be well aware of this fact.
The Russians were promised that NATO would stop expanding eastward.
So what happened… NATO kept expanding eastward, much to the protestations of Putin and Russia.
In 2014, at the time of President Obama, and under a neutral Ukrainian government, Zelensky, with the support of the US, then assumed the presidency.
To edit: I believe it was soon thereafter that conflict began on the eastern side of Ukraine.
I also believe that Zelensky and Putin were on the verge of an agreement soon after the invasion, which was then rejected by Biden…

– ‘There is no state of Palestine’: Labor’s ‘premature recognition pledge slammed (ft. James Paterson and Chris Kenny).
– Labor has ‘no plan’ to get Australia back on track as RBA cuts interest rates to 3.6 percent (ft. James Paterson and Chris Kenny).
– Zelensky ‘softens’ stance of ‘giving up’ Ukrainian land to Russia (ft. Danica De Gorgio and Michael Shoebridge).
– ‘Monarchy was aware’: Prince Andrew was a ‘status’ symbol for Jeffrey Epstein (ft. Gabriella Power and Andrew Lownie).
– (another video on the same subject as above)
– ‘Morally Repugnant’: Chris Kenny blasts government for recognising ‘non-existent’ Palestine.
– ‘Big Danger’: Donald Trump’s meeting with Vladimir Putin places pressure on Ukraine (basically the same as above with Gorgio and Shoebridge).
– ‘Truly pathetic’: Albanese’s ‘premature’ recognition of Palestine slammed (ft. Greg Sheridan).
““Jewish Lobby”, they are not talking about ordinary Jewish people”
I would call them Israel lobbies, simply because we are talking about groups who clearly do not represent all Jewish people, such as non Zionist\ pro peace Jews.
“The Russians were promised that NATO would stop expanding eastward.
So what happened… NATO kept expanding eastward, much to the protestations of Putin and Russia.”
SO Ukraine doesn’t get a say at all? Just roll over them because Russias feelings are hurt
The thing about WFH is that is also beneficial for those who still have to go into the office, in that not only does it it reduce traffic and public transport congestion during their commutes, but also many will have partners who use WFH arrangements in order to look after the kids and the like. The raw stats don’t tell the full story.

While I don’t follow British politics closely it seems that the Labour govt. has been under sustained pressure from an unhinged right wing media attack, led by the Daily Telegraph – sound familiar?
Their energy transition plan, which was previously bipartisan, has been a particular target. Thus, it is reassuring that: “Eight in 10 Brits back more clean energy, including nearly two thirds of Reform supporters”, at least according to the headline of this paywalled article.
