The Financial Review reports the latest Freshwater Strategy poll has the Coalition’s lead in from 52-48 to 51-49. Labor’s primary vote is unchanged at 31%, but the Coalition is down two to 39% and the Greens are up one to 14%. The exact figures are not yet provided, but we are told that Anthony Albanese’s net approval rating is up one to minus 10% while Dutton’s is down four to minus 12%. (UPDATE: Albanese is up two on approval to 37% and up one on disapproval to 47%; Dutton is down one to 35% and up two to 46%.) Albanese’s lead as preferred prime minister is out from 45-43 to 46-42.
Forty-two per cent now expect Labor to win the next election, up five (though only 7% expect a majority Labor government), with the Coalition down five to 45% (18% for a majority). Field work dates and sample size don’t appear to be featured in the online reports (UPDATE: 1051 and Thursday to Saturday, apparently), but the gaps will presumably be filled when the print edition is available. Polls in this series have typically been spaced four weeks apart, but this time it’s only been three.
The more Trump fails the crazier he gets. Seems like they’ll need to invoke the 25th amendment at some point.
Just as well we have MediaWatch
Should be compulsory viewing
The identification of a “housing crisis” and “cost of living crisis” promoter in the media as a Liberal party candidate says it all
Media did not pick up on this – which is no surprise
Promoting a beat up
No doubt some are doing it hard – which is nothing new across generations – but the very, very great majority are doing quite nicely thank you, as always
People continue to live their lives – driving the vehicles they drive, attending entertainment and dining out
As always
It seems the USA is close to reaching the critical point where the rule of law breaks down. The judges might state the law, but it’s up to the executive power to enforce the law, and if they simply don’t enforce it and just do what King Humpty Trumpty says, then it’s pretty much Game Over for them.
Careful PC. There definitely is plenty of money swimming around this country of ours and there may not be a majority of peeps doing it tough. But those that are don’t like to be told they aren’t, and they can alter the course of an election.
“doing it tough” ain’t 1950s tough, nor tough that is relatable.
Not having internet is tough.
“doing it tough” is changing regularly and at a pace not experienced before.
The technology revolution, only really just beginning, is making it tough on a multitude of levels.
Those, the most needy, are being helped by Labor in so many ways.
The needy often forget or perhaps aren’t aware of the efforts of Labor.
Dutton and the “get a better job” advocates don’t help those doing it tough or the needy.
Before you get to Immigration Agents supplying staff (Nuckleer Pete attending a fund raiser with those from that “industry”, both metrics questioning his windy rhetoric of reducing immigration, immigration supplying cheap staff including working for cash)

Centre you do realize I take Roy Morgan about a seriously as betting on who’s going to win the election right I always said it’s going to be a minority government and it looks like lab is has more of chance getting it than the coalition also also saying that trump’s going to get Peace in Ukraine well it’s Ukraine’s war they get to decide what terms they get not Russia anyway have a good night
Peter Dutton keeps writing Labor’s ads for them. His latest thought bubble re deportation of Dual Citizens had me thinking immediately about those poor people who had been living in Australia since they were babies but had grown up to commit a serious crime being deported back to the frozen streets of some godforsaken place far away from their home and family in Australia, courtesy of the Coalition.
This won’t be any different, in fact it will be worse because Dutton wants to start deporting our own citizens. Just like the Indigenous Man the Coalition wanted to deport. Remember him? Only the High Court saved him from an ignominious fate.
Also, note how Dutton references ‘terrorists’. Well I’ve seen that movie before. Recently. Trump is designating people who are gang members, ‘terrorists’, and using that as his justification for deporting them. Even IF they have committed no crime. And don’t tell me that Dutton wouldn’t happily go down that road arm in strong arm with Trump should he get the opportunity.
Be afraid of the policies Dutton is proposing. Be very afraid.
And if it’s done by referendum, then it’s almost impossible for any subsequent Labor government to change the policy. Which I’m sure Peter Dutton and his advisers in the shadows know quite well.

“These people are not human beings like you or I.”
With of course the MAGA cult cheering on and saying things like “Thank you Mr. President. Send the Democrats over there next.”
“Peace” is a very flexible concept.
To Putin it will be the complete surrender of Ukraine.
To Trump it will be a successful “deal”.
For the rest of the world the word (including Ukraine) it will mean appeasement (by Trump) and recognition that naked invasion of your neighbour can be seen as a normal event.
The more Trump sells out, the more we in Oz accept the ANZUS agreement as a crock of crap, the more we have in common with the likes of Canada and the rest of NATO
Europe the more dangerous for us the world has become.
At home, the more the Liberals under Dutton, his leader in the Senate Cash suck up to Trump and lean on Gina’s (and the Pratt’s) adoration to Trump, the more likely the Oz electorate will repudiate Dutton.
Unfortunately, possibly, for the Libs leadership they opened their big, gushing mouths too soon and too loud to back out of the fawning of the neo-US dictator.
And for all those still pining for the French fjords where our submarines need to come from now, you are all ignoring the fact that President Macron has stated on more than one occasion that France is stepping up to equip Europe with their increased military requirements going forward. Which doesn’t leave much room for feckless little Australia to get an oar in. But go on deluding yourselves that it’s as easy as 1,2,3 to just whistle up those subs from France. Not to mention that President Macron would probably love nothing more than to do a reverse ferret on Australia.
If you really think Australia should look elsewhere then at least look to a country with spare capacity, like Japan or South Korea. Though even those countries are supplying other country’s orders, as well as ramping up their own output in order to counter China.
Also, as far as the Minnesota’s trip down under having been announced a while ago, how about using some reverse logic and thinking that the Chinese, who are purported to have had their own submarine as part of the fleet who circumnavigated Australia, made the decision to come down here at the same time as the Minnesota? Good data on the opposition was probably provided to both countries.
Honestly cat mama I’m starting to think he’s getting reports Peter that he’s not doing too well like this is what I’ve been saved for the past couple of months since I started commenting Pauline has to be better for the liberals it conscious be 51 to 49 it has to be at least 56 to 44 like like we got a essential then we get yougov then we get a news poll what I think’s going to happen is that it’s going to be stagged that 50/50 that’s why I wonder if he’s throwing out these ideas he’s probably getting Intel that that he’s not doing as well as he thinks seriously unless you’re liberal hack you have to think in the HQ there’ll be looking at going huh this we should be leading by more

I see Centrebet is walking back his ‘Whooshka! Dutton majority’ inanity.
Predictable. 😐
Ven still a holdout for the ‘Liberal majority’ meme. 😉
Ven can I ask you a serious question how do you think Liberals are gonna get majority because everyone else is saying that it’s a hard Road they need to get 22 seats that is impossible 51 to 49 and as you know during the Queensland election back to Queensland Labour they didn’t win but it wasn’t a wife out like the liberals got in Western Australia I’m just saying you seem to just be a Debbie Downer and I’ll say the same thing to Scotty thinks that the Labour Party is gonna rump in home get 80 seats it’s gonna be minority it this feels like election where both sides are in people wanting cost of living which Labor can win on with Medicare and that and also Peter isn’t popular so he can’t pull Tony Abbott
Hmm, I’m a dual citizen, been here since I was 4.
Not sure people can write off the childcare industry. Yes we have poc in our centre, they’re all lovely caring people. Clearly the industry can’t get enough whities, they’re all off having real jobs like being influencers.
You no longer need to be a member of a ‘terrorist organisation’ to be deported from America now.

One party is offering universal childcare if elected.
The other party is offering to deport the country’s citizens if elected.
One party is offering universal free doctors visits if elected.
The the other party is going to force you back to the office if elected.
There’s something a little strange about one of these parties.
Roy Morgan wow!
I told everyone here a week ago that the internal Labor polling I’ve seen began putting seats like Gilmore and bennelong back in business to defend and retain.
54-46 would mean Victoria is coming back home to Labor. Dutton has been kept in the loop with his rapidly declining numbers as per his highly divisive press in case of emergency populist Hail Marys today with the proposed referendum.

Mostly interested it’s not about their colour. Go and watch the 4 corners investigation.
What a pathetic attempt to deflect and end legitimate concerns and factual realities about the childcare sector that you don’t want to accept.
For four decades we’ve been wasting resources and wrecking lives because our mainstream economists suck at their jobs.
Why is our Treasurer Jim Chalmers aiming for fiscal surpluses? For a currency issuer a fiscal surplus is not inherently a good thing. The federal government’s fiscal policy is a means to policy ends – such as full employment, stable prices, technological improvement, a healthier and better educated population, a population that is securely housed, and so on. Functional finance, not sound finance, is the way to think about fiscal policy. A currency issuer’s financial activities need to serve socially productive functions. They do not need to pursue “soundness” in the sense of pursuing surpluses as an end in itself.
It would only make sense for the Australian Government to be running a fiscal surplus if the external sector – the rest of the world – was running a large fiscal deficit with regard to our economy. That is, if the rest of the world was spending a lot more AUD than it is earning. Then the federal government would need to tighten its fiscal policy to counter the inflationary effects of the external sector’s net spending into our economy. But our situation is the exact opposite of that. The rest of the world is net saving AUD. It is spending a lot less than it earns in AUD. So the rest of the world is running a large surplus with regard to the Australian economy, which I believe we call a current account deficit from our point of view, which has negative connotations that are entirely unjustified. It’s not a bad thing if the rest of the world is willing to send us more real goods and services than we supply to them. If they are happy with that arrangement – if building up their AUD savings is satisfying them – then it’s all good! Our central bank isn’t going to run out keystrokes to make the necessary payments.
If the non-government sector isn’t creating enough jobs to satisfy everyone’s desires to work, the federal government has to fund the creation of additional jobs. The jobs don’t have to be administered by the federal government but the funding has to come from them. They are the currency issuer.
I’d start with filling in the gaps in our current public services.
We don’t have enough teachers and researchers in our universities and TAFE institutes. We need to hire a lot more.
We need to make TAFE and university free and we need to cancel all existing student debt.
We don’t have enough workers in our public health care systems.
We need to make all forms of health care free. The federal government can fund the state and territory governments to provide all forms of health care through the public systems – pharmaceuticals, medical devices, primary care, secondary care, hospital care, outpatient care, GP care, medical specialist care, and allied health professional care. We need to build up the capabilities of the public systems. We can keep Medicare rebates in place for people who want to see a private practitioner but the goal should be to make Medicare much smaller and the public systems much larger.
A huge number of Australian schools are funded far below the resourcing standard set by the Gonski Report.
We don’t include early childhood education in our public education systems even though crucial cognitive and social development happens during infancy and early childhood. We need to make sure that all of these kids have enriched environments, not deprived environments.
We have nowhere near enough public housing, both for renting and for first homebuyers to purchase at cheap regulated prices.
The economist Cameron Murray has a proposal called HouseMate that would make a big contribution to housing everybody. The net federal spending of HouseMate would only be about $20 billion per year because the first home buyers would be paying for the cost of construction of their new home. It would add about 30,000 homes to the housing stock each year.
We need to upgrade our public transport and active transport infrastructure. We need to increase the frequency and convenience and comfort of public transport and make public transport free.
Once the federal government has filled the gaps in our mainstream public services we need to set up a Job Guarantee program to act as a buffer – as an economic stabilizer. It would be federally funded and community-administered. It would create socially useful jobs on demand for jobseekers. The jobs would be tailored to the needs and circumstances of the jobseekers. The jobs that would be suitable for this type of scheme would be caring jobs – caring for people, caring for communities, caring for the environment, and doing artistic and cultural work. The Job Guarantee would only be a small slice of total employment – perhaps 1 percent on average – and its exact size would fluctuate automatically in response to what is happening in the private sector. The wages for these jobs would be the minimum wage, which I think should be lifted to $25 per hour.
Lefty brawler I wouldn’t get too excited about the Roy Morgan it’s Roy Morgan but I do think people who were counting Labor out since late last year maybe shouldn’t if anything I think this is going to be a minority election and I know I sound like a broken clock the internal polling you have is right then I wonder what the eternal polling that the liberals have because it does seem like they’re just throwing s*** out see if it sticks well lab is just slowly making announcements and attacking Peter at the same time
Centre (more accurately “Far Right”) says:
“It will be a great achievement from Trump if we get peace in Ukraine.”
That’s like saying it would have been a great achievement for Barzini to get the Mafia peace deal in The Godfather!
Root my boot.
Dutton’s policy agenda so far:
1. Nuclear smokescreen to keep fossil fuels going forever.
2. A Trump inspired “Dept of Government Efficiency”, no detail as to what these cuts will target and the scale of them and how it would be more efficient.
3. A referendum on deporting dual nationals – even if you agree with this and think it is a priority, which i dont, does it even require constitutional change?
The L/NP’s limited vision is to deliver more money and control for their rich donors, restrict all govt spending as much as possible in order to do that and try and damage society with socially divisive tactics in order to fleece us.
It’s kind of lucky for us Trump has gone gaga and everyone can see in a visceral way what Gina and its lapdog has planned for us.
I think I’d best just say it and say that if Labor wants to win on Childcare it has to do more than it is doing at the moment about it in its messaging.
Only a very small section of the population have to deal with childcare, namely families with children too young to go to school. Most of them won’t be won over with lists and slogans that they just hear as “blah blah blah Childcare”, they’re too busy trying to keep their families afloat as it is, they just don’t have their minds open to crap like “If you do this and you do that then you save 20% on childcare costs” or something.
A narrative needs to be built about it. And a particularly good one at that.
What is it with Dutton and exile? He hates foreigners, that’s it.
An Australian citizen who commits crimes is our problem. It is absurd to deport them to a country where they might have little or no connection. The criterion that I would adopt to consider deportation would be something like “arrived after xx birthday”, where xx is about mid-teens.
I suppose that the criteria to select deportees will be adapted from this:
C@tmomma at 10:12 pm
Also, note how Dutton references ‘terrorists’. Well I’ve seen that movie before. Recently. Or “it’s a great achievement for Chamberlain to get that deal from Hitler”.
Quentin you could be right no doubt and we can only really find out on the night.
When you look at the qualitative sub sections of the recent tranche of polling you see some emerging trends that spell disaster for Dutton and the LNP.
The 70/30 support for albo’s stance on Ukraine and his steadfast support for Zelensky as opposed to trump and Putin is damming enough. You then have approaching 60/40 for concern and pessimism regarding the Trump presidency.
The trend is confirming what we already know and that is that Dutton is nailed to the MAGA mast by association irrespective of what he may say otherwise.
Dutton made a terminal gaffe in parroting the DOGE initiative that would be headed by everyone’s favourite LNP window dressing device the one and only Ms Price. Days later she’s up on her 14th alleged electoral allowance breach, she will be great for efficiency.
The terminal theme for Dutton is that he was too bullish early on immediately after the Trump 2.0 swearing in.
Dutton hasn’t learnt from recent or historic electoral histories in Australia.
Irrespective of one’s ideological standing there are some universal truths and cultural markers that transcend party lines and petty politicking.
Things like Medicare, IR, workers rights, institutionalised consistency and continuity of international norms and hegemony, the separation of powers etc are all under a perceived threat from Dutton.
The more Australia sees of trump the more they hate and tremble at the prospect. They see Dutton as a spiritual brother. 54-46 doesn’t surprise me at all. Dutton’s internal data must be signalling the same message based on his erratic announcements over the last 24 hours.
Latest pathetic attempt by Failed federal labor government to blame someone else for their 20 billion plus deficit they will announce next week is Trump!
Cyclone ,trump who’s next labor the hamburglar?
Remove Rudd who called Trump a Traitor.
54-46 for liberals is the resolve poll more believable than Morgan.
Piper can you please get some medical help you sound insane no wonder you like Trump. Lefty brawler yeah when do the one that also said that the Labor internal polling in Western Australia is actually doing pretty good because if I remember correctly kos basically said Labour’s strong strong states are self Australia and Western Australia where the Battlegrounds is in Victoria and a New South Wales I wonder why Peters being going on the whole referendum s*** where it’s a cross of living crisis which honestly works well with labour they can put money into Medicare it’s basically one wondering is Peter basically just throwing s*** and hoping that sticks because at the moment it looks like it because the problem was people labour support with soft I wouldn’t be surprised of liberal support was soft also
Lefty brawler yeah even Malcolm Turnbull said like people wouldn’t be in the streets over a trade deal but they show a shipy in the streets if they have to pay more for medicine kos even said that the far right even in the liberal party as smart enough not to f*** with the pharmaceutical benefit scheme
OK, the Roy Morgan poll is almost certainly a rogue poll, even a rouge one. Labor has not scored 54 2PP in an actual Federal election since 1946. Still good to see. It would be great if it turned out to be accurate.
EDIT: with a sample size over 2,000, the margin of error would be about 2%, depending upon the size. About 5% of well-conducted polls come in outside the margin of error.

I’m honestly “cautiously optimistic” at the moment. Polls do seem to be going in the right direction for Labor as world events play out, and actual electoral results were fantastic for WA Labor in their state election.
I’ll have to reserve an official judgement until after the budget next week and then presumably the start of the election campaign soon after. World events could also work out well for Labor, we could actually end up running an election campaign simultaneously with Canada, and they’ve sure as heck turned on their Conservatives hard according to their polls.
I’ll call it now in this environment the LNP won’t win the next election.
Quentin I might be lucky enough to get some fresh Lindsay internal tracking data tomorrow off a former protégé I helped mentor for the better part of 11 years when he was a rising star for young Labor unity. He’s a solid contact and career corridor crawler in Sussex st.
I don’t expect Lindsay to get anywhere near competitive for Labor but it will be telling if those data sets support a trend back to Labor
Labor behind in freshwater and Newspoll 49-51.

Except Australia’s trade surplus is almost entirely resources and energy, which your greens friends want to destroy, and the second is the selling of low income migrant visas (occasionally refered to as international students) which are the principal cause of our housing crisis.
MMT in the Aus context also ignores the impacts of imported inflation from a devalued currency, as Australia is a capital importer and does not produce a lot of essentials. So maintaining exchange rate discipline through fiscal and monetary management is much more important here. Demand for Australian dollars should not be presumed as our mining exports decline yet demand for essentials grow.
We don’t need to create demeaning minimum wage “make work” projects if we just cut migration – restricting labor supply is a far better signal to business to hire and train, recognising that Australia already operating at 40 year unemployment lows and all time participation highs. Plus the government is already the principal job creator over the past year (through the health spending uplift) – so much so that rural and regional businesses are struggling to find workers.
The obsession with free university is just a subsidy for those already on track for a higher income, paid for by non-uni students, and ignoring that hecs neither accrues interest, nor is required to paid back until an income is actually earned. Uni education was measurably less fair in the “free uni” era.
$20 billion for 30,000 houses a year is over 50% more expensive per house than what the private sector is delivering right now – and with almost 200,000 houses delivered in the last year all is needed is a sensible lowering of migration and that existing rate is more than enough.
Key Tafe courses are already free, and most S&Ts are on track to get full gonski level education funding already.
All you are doing is pretty much the same thing as right wing nut jobs – importing US culture war talking points with few considerations of Australian economic conditions and circumstances.
