Utting Research: 10% swing to Labor in WA marginals

Two sets of polling data suggest Labor is set to bag three if not four Liberal-held seats in Western Australia.

The first bit of poll news to relate involves YouGov’s rather remarkable result ahead of Saturday’s South Australian state election, which you can read about in the post below. The bad polling news for the conservative side of politics doesn’t end there:

The West Australian today has seat polls from the Liberals’ four most marginal seats in Western Australia, conducted Friday to Monday from a sample size of 750. Given the fairly small sample size, it would only seem safe to pool the results and tally up the overall swings. Labor holds a lead across the four seats of 54-46 in the poll compared with a post-redistribution average of 56.1-43.9, suggesting Labor would comfortably win Swan (margin 3.3%), Pearce (5.5%) and Hasluck (5.9%), and be in the hunt for Tangney (9.8%). The average primary votes in the poll are Liberal 35.9% (down 10.2%), Labor 42.4% (up 11.8%), Greens 6.5% (down 4.4%), One Nation 4.0% (down 0.5%) and United Australia Party 3.2%. The West Australian’s report does break down the numbers, which for what they’re worth have it at 50-50 in Tangney, with Labor leading 52-48 in Hasluck, 55-45 in Pearce and 59-41 in Swan. Primary votes are also included in the report, if you can access it.

• The West Australian also reported yesterday that a poll commissioned by the Greens in Western Australia and conducted by the Online Research Unit recorded Labor on 42% (up 12.2% on the 2019 election result), the Coalition on 33% (down 12.2%), the Greens on 11% (down 0.6%) and the United Australia Party on 1% (down 1.0%) independents on 9%, leaving 4% to be accounted for by either minor parties or an undecided component. It also had Senate results of Labor 39% (up 11.4%), Coalition 33% (down 9.3%), Greens 12% (down 0.2%), the United Australia Party on 2% (up 0.2%) and independents 11%, leaving 3% unaccounted for. A sample size and field work dates were not provided.

• The Australian yesterday had further results from the weekend Newspoll featuring an occasional exercise measuring respondents’ assessments of the leaders’ characteristics. I tend not to get too excited about these as they generally march in lock-step with the leaders’ overall approval ratings, although there would be some value in assessing the balance of the various results for different leaders over the long term, which is something I never quite find time to do. The latest results find Scott Morrison with a stronger result than Anthony Albanese on “experienced”, which is fairly typical for the incumbent, but losing his advantage on “decisive and strong”, falling further behind on “in touch with the voters” and “likeable”, and continuing to have a problem on “arrogant”.

    [‘That’s your best shot?

    Pathetic.’]

No, but I didn’t want to embarrass you on a public forum by suggesting your links to the extreme Right of the Labor party – the now moribund DLP. Come on, admit your connections. Next, you’ll be extolling the virtues of Mannix. It must’ve been very hard for you at school – that’s fair enough. I can understand your angst(?).

  2. Today I learnt that Australia’s Environment Minister, who obviously *doesn’t* believe in climate science enough to feel she needs to do anything about it, *does* believe enough in numerology to put an extra S in her name to give her more woo or something.

This is somehow the scariest thing I’ve ever learnt about a member of the LNP in at least 3 or 4 days.

The Prime Minister of our country believes that the universe was created by a sky fairy about 7,000 years ago, and that he and his fellow ‘believers’ are going to be ‘raptured’ up into the sky sometime soon, leaving the rest of us to ‘eternal torment’, and you are concerned that Ssussssan LLLLeyyy also has an addled brain! Me too, but she’s well into second place.

  4. Yabba,

You have a huge mind, apparently. But, there’s a silly old bugger on stationary bike in that space.

Surely, there’s room for someone with progressive ideas?

Note the part where I said it’s the scariest thing I’ve learnt *in the last few days* – Morrison thinking the world is 3 thousand years old has been common knowledge to everyone for many years.

Maybe the general public need to hear about Morrison believing he literally has the “gift of prophecy” when he talks in tongues, and this would finally knock off the most severely rusted-on?

Ex-MP: ALP bullying nearly killed me
Emma Husar was forced to quit the federal labor party and give up her seat amid allegations of bullying and sexual harassment. She was cleared of most of the allegations but says the media attention ruined her life and she can’t get a new job in NSW. She said she’s been forced to leave family and her community for a new start in Perth.
Ex-Labor MP Emma Husar has slammed her former party, saying it is ‘toxic and manipulative’ — and its leader Anthony Albanese is behaving like a ‘gaslighting narcissist’.

  9. Mavis

I think this young man’s attempting to outdo Rees-Mogg. Have they not heard berth control? Or is it that he’s abiding by the Catholic dictum of: ‘using contraception is “intrinsically evil” in itself, regardless of the consequences’, even it seems rape? Pepys.

  10. Calls for Labor to probe Kitching’s ‘bullying’ claims
Several Labor figures have joined calls by friends of Senator Kimberley Kitching for an inquiry into how she was treated by colleagues before her death.

Ahh the anonymous sources are out as well.

    Tomorrow herald suns stories….

  11. All political parties have factions so there is going to be some argy bargy when one group or the other think it’s time for a change. Look at NSW Liberals – Scummos faction has been putting so much pressure on their members it has finished up in Court this week. It is sad that the late Senator had not been endorsed before her heart attack. Every party endorses a candidate for one term, not forever. Obviously Hawke, Zimmerman and Co don’t think that applies to them.

Below is part of an article, which I read recently:

A few days ago, Lithuania, which is a member of the European Union, canceled its donation of over 4,40,000 vaccine doses to Bangladesh. This happened after the government of Bangladesh, just like the government of India, decided to abstain from voting on the recent UN resolution condemning Russian military action in the Ukraine. Quite a throwback to tribal societies and childhood rivalries with all the civilizational and humanistic proclamations casually abandoned.
    ….’
    ===========================
True. The Bangladeshi Government should be utterly ashamed of itself.

It’s hard to see how this is an appropriate response.

It will only harm the people of Bangladesh, not the Government.

  13. Something lizzie / Zoe would rejoice in hearing.

English departments will be chiefly responsible for teaching grammar, sentence structure and punctuation, under a draft new syllabus, after the decades-long approach of sharing the job among teachers from all subjects contributed to a steep decline in writing standards.

The draft NSW English syllabus for years 3 to 10 will intensify focus on literacy skills amid concerns writing has been neglected in high schools, leaving even the brightest students struggling with crucial skills such as writing clear sentences and expressing ideas.

  14. Acting federal Education Minister Stuart Robert has blamed “dud teachers” for the decline in the academic results of Australian students while praising independent schools for employing only quality teachers and delivering a model example of education.

In a speech to an independent schools conference on Thursday, Mr Robert criticised a “bottom 10 per cent of teachers” who “can’t read and write” as a key reason for Australia’s plummeting performance in the international education benchmark tests.

“The point being, if we can take the bottom 10 per cent of quality of teachers and turn them into the average quality within the teaching profession, we will arrest the decline,” Mr Robert said.

“The problem is the protection of teachers that don’t want to be there; that aren’t up to the right standard; that are graduating from university or have been for the last 10 years and they can’t read and write.”

    https://www.smh.com.au/politics/federal/education-minister-blames-dud-teachers-for-declining-education-results-20220317-p5a5k6.html

And yet as we’ve just seen, in NSW it’s the school curriculum that is largely responsible for declining literacy among students!

  16. “ Emma Husar was forced to quit the federal labor party and give up her seat amid allegations of bullying and sexual harassment. She was cleared of most of the allegations ”

This is sad, because I like Emma, thought she was treated badly, but it contains two lies. She was not ‘forced to quit’ the party – or her seat for that matter. She was not cleared of ‘most of the allegations’, only the risible sexual harassment claims that the odious Wokeman used to slut shame her: at te end of the day there were sustained findings of poor management and bullying of staff that were made. Not matters that should have ended her career, but matters which – in the absence of those terrible Wokeman matters – could have and I believe would have been worked through and adequately addressed.

Albanese has in no way gaslighted Emma Husar: he simply points to the facts: she dedided to not re-contest her seat. The party selected someone else as the candidate. Emma changed her mind at the heal of the hunt, but by that stage the party had moved on AND there were still those matters of poor management to work through. When Emma takes pot shots at Albo, she is being very selective with the truth. Sad.

How can you have an inquiry if the person is dead and the allegations are so vague? Can’t cross examine them.

You’ve just reminded me of the way the Liberals weaponised the death of the woman who accused Christian Porter of rape. Dead women can’t tell the truth to the world.

    Slimy.

Not to mention the way they background and smear any of the still living women who make allegations of abuse by the Chosen Ones in the Liberal Party.

    Disgusting.

  28. Two more smear stories in the Oz today about the Labor Party and Kimberley Kitching. Guess they are all looking for something to talk about whilst we wait for tomorrow’s State election and Mr Potatoe Head jnr to deliver his pre-budget fiscal outlook baloney today, hinting at a focus on budget repair and “cost of living” relief. Yawn.

  29. Speers said those politicians closest to Kitching are backgrounding journalists about bullying claims. I wonder who he is talking about?
