Essential Research leadership ratings and end-of-year review

Scott Morrison’s personal ratings maintain a downward trend, as the government scores middling ratings for its overall performance for the year.

Essential Research has published its final fortnightly poll for the year, which includes its monthly leadership ratings. Scott Morrison is down two on approval to 46% and up two on disapproval to 44%, his weakest numbers since the onset of COVID-19 and a continuation of a downward trend since March. Anthony Albanese is steady on 40% approval and up one on disapproval to 36%. Essential’s numbers for both leaders are consistently more favourable than those for other pollsters. Morrison’s lead on preferred prime minister is down from 44-28 to 42-31, the narrowest it has been all term.

The federal government’s ratings for COVID-19 response have deteriorated after a three-month improving trend, down six on good to 41% and up seven on poor to 32%. The equivalent results for the states record a one point drop in the New South Wales government’s good rating to 54%, an eight point drop in the Victorian government’s rating to 43% and a three point drop for Queensland to 57%. The Western Australian government is up four to 78% and the South Australian government is down three to 57%, with due caution to the tiny sample sizes in these cases.

Respondents were asked about the Coalition’s performance on various matters since it came to power in 2013, and were interestingly given the opportunity to indicate whether the issue was important or unimportant to them in addition to evaluating the government’s performance. Its worst results came for handling sexual assault and misconduct, with 35% from the 50% who rated it poorly considering it an important issue, and handling of corruption allegations, rated likewise by 35% from 49%. However, the government now records neutral ratings on the vaccine rollout and is rated very favourably for the legalisation of same-sex marriage.

As it does at the end of each year, the pollster asked if had been a good or a bad year for various actors, with the federal government deemed to have had a good year by 34% and a poor year by 38%. Thirty-eight per cent considered it had been a good year for them and their family compared with 23% for poor; 37% rated their personal financial situation favourably compared with 30% for unfavourably. As usual, large companies and corporations were deemed to have done best of all, at 52% for good and 21% for poor. The poll was conducted Wednesday to Sunday from a sample of around 1000.

Another poll worth noting is a Western Australian survey for Painted Dog Research, published today in The West Australian, which found more respondents considering the state’s recently announced opening up date of February 5 to be too soon (36%) than too late (18%), with 46% deeming it right. Mark McGowan was credited with a 77% approval rating, down from 88% in a previous survey in February. The poll was conducted Monday and Tuesday from a sample of 811.

  1. Terrible Xmas for me.

Someone on one side of my family tested positive to COVID, so the family lunch was called off. However, that person had been in contact with several other members of that side the day before. So it’s looking like most of my family will have COVID.

But also… my job is pretty much gone and I’m going to have no choice but to resign. I’ve been working from home for 6 months now and given the recent increase in case and hospital numbers I really do not want to go back. We have COVID in the office… plus, my mother is immuno-compromised… so if I were to go into the office, I really would not want to risk passing it onto her. Therefore, I’m left with no choice but to spend Xmas sending out resumes *cries* My employer is so hellbent on getting everyone back to working in the office full-time.

  3. The interesting thing about many of the less positive reviews of Don’t Look Up is that they take a fairly common, professionally “bored” sounding line in saying the movie is a bit over the top and preachy, ie. it goes too far in presenting world reaction to an impending planetary catastrophe as basically polluted by spivs, Big Business, cynical politicians, marketing leeches, trivializing media and celebrity culture.

I would have thought what’s happened with Covid and Climate Change give the lie to that.

In fact, I at first though a movie like, say, Contagion might be a reasonable depiction of what might happen during a pandemic. Of course, now I know it to be utterly unrealistic in predicting a basically rational response to the challenge. I don’t think Humanity is capable of that anymore. If ever there was a time we needed government to be sane it’s now, sadly just as the lunatics have taken over the asylum.

  4. BB, saw “Don’t look up” and mentioned it as a good film a few weeks ago in the cinema. The feeling of “lack of traction” for important news is palpable throughout. Really liked the performers who all did a great job.

  5. Scotty’s plan for zero by 2050: suck carbon out of the atmosphere to make sails. Will give mates a couple of billion to develop the technology.

When you think how a few deaths here and there cause a national outpouring of grief in the US and Australia you have to wonder.

A cop murders a black man, a kid shoots some of his fellow students, a little boy disappears, a jumping castle becomes untethered, even 3,000 dead in 9/11 pale into insignificance compared to millions dead from Covid. Yet the sense of tragedy on a massive scale is missing from the Covid deaths as it is stark in the other examples.

Well, one of the ‘superior’ black sails has gone kaput on Scallywag already.

Don’t larf yet . Given the sort of ‘corporates’ that indulge in the sport your taxes probably helped pay the eye watering price those sails no doubt cost.

    Re: error by St Vincent’s.

A very good question Victoria. Either they sent the correct information to NSW Health then sent an incorrect SMS to the people tested or they sent incorrect information to NSW Health in which case sadly the numbers are wrong.

Meanwhile just as my partner, son and daughter and I arrived at my folks place for Boxing Day lunch we received notification that my daughter’s cousin tested + for COVID this morning as we were walking in the door. My daughter had already hugged my folks so was devastated at the news. We turned, said goodbye and headed back down the Calder Freeway for home. Every one now needs to be tested and in ISO until hopefully a – result is received. Given the huge waiting times at testing centres around Melbourne it will be a very long wait. Sadly my daughter’s cousin in her early 20s is now quite unwell.

A trip to day 3 of the cricket (if England lasts the distance) now seems unlikely. Second year in a row that we’ve had no Christmas get together.

COVID is a %^&&%$# but we all knew that.

  13. Good on St Vincent’s Hospital – found a human error (they must be exhausted), and immediately owned up and contacted the mis-advised 400 and apologised.

Compare this with the arse covering approach from the Morrison Government; they would have had the error discovered by someone else, tried to cover it up, and eventually blame the people being tested by dropping lies to the Murdoch press..

  14. China and Russia have similar concern

Anti China and anti Russian influences which are promoted

It would have been deemed cabinet-in-confidence!

Whoops. Left out the bit about Morrison not accepting the premise. Let’s face it. There is no need to defend a fuck up if it did not really happen in the first place.

    An on-water matter.

There would have been silence and should anyone ask then Bullshitman would go straight for his fave , “I reject the premise of your question”. Phil Coorey and his fellow presstitutes would immediately nod in agreement with Bullshitman. End of story.

  18. One new case in WA, linked to the French backpacker and already in quarantine.

Edit: The latest case attended the Perth Mess Hall event and also was staying at the Old Fire Station hostel in Fremantle. They are not considered to have been contagious while in the community.

  19. U.S. COVID update: Limited reporting due to Christmas

    – New cases: 113,730 ………. – New deaths: 204

    – States reporting: 14/50

    – In hospital: 70,346 (+117)
    – In ICU: 16,520 (+54)

    837,779 total deaths now

  20. Mr Mysterious

Just read your sad post. What a shocking Christmas you’ve had. There are so many families in the same situation that it’s difficult to find any comfort for you. I hope you get through this OK.

What are you talking about? NSW provides shining example. Didn’t DoPe say that Case numbers are no longer important. According to him only Hospitalisations and deaths are the important metric now. 🙂
Didn’t he nod his face up and down to positively reinforce that point while saying it?

  22. BW,
The Poms problem is their openers. They are always two down for bugger all which puts enormous pressure on the middle order. Can’t build a score.

  23. lizzie

    Thanks Lizzie. I’ll be okay.

Hoping my family will be fine, but they’re not well.

As selfish as it sounds, I’m also so concerned about my career. Ever since COVID started, the managers at the place I work at have been so insistent on people going to work. Heck, they’ve even had office parties when lockdowns were in effect. I was planning to go back into the office mid-December when numbers were down but then they jumped back up. Now it seems I’m going to have to resign because I just really don’t want to be responsible for giving my mother or my partner an illness when I do not know what effect it will have on them.

It makes me angry seeing people say… oh, you won’t die from it. Sure, I/my family may not… but I don’t want my family or I going to hospital over something that I could prevent… nor do we know what the effects of this virus will be in 10 years’ time.

But anyway, how’s your Christmas going?

  24. Ven

Hospitalisations jumped up by 70 today… I’m assuming that’s factoring in around the 2,500 per day case numbers. Give it a week and I estimate when the 6k+ daily case numbers are factored into the equation, hospitalisations will jump by over 200/250 per day.

Get rid of their openers. Elevate Root and Malan. Put in a couple of middle order specialists. Problem solved.
