Roy Morgan: 50.5-49.5 to Labor

Another pollster with another tight voting intention result, plus preselection latest from federal seats in Perth.

Roy Morgan has produced its second federal poll in a fortnight, and will hopefully make a regular habit of this going forward. The poll credits Labor with a bare lead of 50.5-49.5 (Morgan’s rounding being done to increments of half a percentage point), down from 51-49 last time. On the primary vote, the Coalition is up 1.5% to 41.5%, Labor is down half a point to 34.5%, the Greens are up half a point to 12% and One Nation is up half a point to 3.5%. State two-party breakdowns have the Coalition leading 51-49 in New South Wales, 56-44 in Queensland and 52-48 in Western Australia, but with Labor leading 55-45 in Victoria, 52-48 in South Australia and 57-43 in Tasmania.

The poll was conducted by telephone and online surveys over the previous two weekends from a sample of 2782. Since we will presumably be hearing more from Morgan in future, it’s worth pointing out that the company is not a member of the Australian Polling Council, and thus does not observe the standards of transparency demanded of its code of conduct.

Other news:

Peter Law of The West Australian reports that Labor’s candidate for the key Perth seat of Swan will be Zaneta Mascarenhas, an engineer who runs an energy management consultancy. This comes after the state party’s Left-dominated administration committee blocked the nomination of the only other contender, former South Perth councillor Fiona Reid, on the grounds she had run as an independent candidate at the 2017 state election, to the displeasure of the Right faction Shop Distributive and Allied Employees Association. Mascarenhas is aligned with the Left faction Australian Manufacturing Workers’ Union. The West’s report also relates that Tania Lawrence, a manager at Woodside who ran unsuccessfully for Labor in Darling Range at a state by-election in 2018, is the party’s only nominee in the seat of Hasluck.

• Pollster John Utting has told The West Australian that his recent polling leads him to expect that Labor will win Swan and possibly Pearce. He also believes that Labor will “probably” win the election off the back of wins in Chisholm, Boothby, Longman and potentially Leichhardt, Braddon and Bass, although they could potentially lose Eden-Monaro and Macquarie. Utting has polled extensively for Labor and provided polling for The West Australian five months out from the March state election that had the measure of the eventual result.

Roxanne Fitzgerald of the ABC reports a complaint has been lodged with the Human Rights Commission accusing the Australian Electoral Commission of discrimination against indigenous voters, having failed to provide sufficient polling facilities to remote communities and directly enrol people who do not receive mail at a residential address. The complainants are Matthew Ryan, mayor of West Arnhem Regional Council, and Ross Mandi, chairman of Yalu Aboriginal Corporation in Galiwinku, with the support of the Maritime Union of Australia and the United Workers Union.

  1. After the last Fed. election pollsters suddenly ‘discovered’ the 50/50 tree and by golly they are hanging on tight to it.

  2. Leichardt!?! I thought Warren Entsch had decided to be carried out in a box and never retire?… Because he knows what will happen when he does. 🙂

  3. Cue delirious gloating and blogorrhea all day and all night by Firefox2 because The Greens are up half a point to 12%! 🙄

  4. Its interesting that Morrison is trying to blame NSW government for not doing the job which the federal government is responsible for

Vaccinations for front line workers such as quarantine

  5. We may have poked fun at Michael McCormack and his team of Nationals Ministers, but there was some genuine talent among them, like Darren Chester, but it seems embittered Barnaby is having none of that:

Nationals MPs fear a ruthless reshuffle of their federal cabinet posts to reward those who voted for Barnaby Joyce to lead the party, amid Labor scorn that he will join a cabinet taskforce on women’s safety.

… The casualties are expected to include Veterans’ Affairs Minister Darren Chester, Regional Health Minister Mark Coulton, Assistant Minister for Children and Families Michelle Landry and Assistant Minister to the Deputy Prime Minister Kevin Hogan, all of whom backed Mr McCormack.

That scenario raises the prospect of another extended period of bad blood within the party room, with some Nationals arguing Mr Chester should keep his portfolio even if he is moved out of cabinet.

  6. The article C@t posted @ 6:49 includes a picture of Barnaby.

He does a fine impersonation of a Fathead Sculpin aka (Tasmanian) Blobfish.

  7. Tony Smith should stand down as speaker, the scars of the infighting in the house chamber between the National and liberal party , he did not recover from it at all

  8. poroti has no respect for people eating their breakfast! 😆

How could you put that picture of Bananasby up so early in the morning! 😉

  9. Pretty amazing stuff. With the samples sizes used you should expect spread of about 2% in polling result yet they all come in at 50/50.

  10. On the situation with lockdowns and borders closing

Morrison and Gladys were the ones to start playing politics

Morrison and Gladys attacked the Labor premiers while ignoring Liberal party premiers who were doing the same thing as the Labor premiers

  11. Pretty amazing stuff. With the samples sizes used you should expect spread of about 2% in polling result yet they all come in at 50/50.

Incredible, in the sense of in-credible.

  12. Why are many coalition people desperately defending against something they supposedly don’t believe in? Climate change has them rattled and scurrying all over the main stream media and social media. Latest examples Joyce and how cold it was at his farm last week.(a farmer who doesn’t know the difference between weather and climate?) Then Canavan and his farting cows.
Gentlemen the argument is lost- stop your Trumpian sulking and represent in the best interests of all Australians.

  13. “The NSW government will hold a crisis meeting to review the state’s response to a growing number of Covid-19 infections across Sydney, which has so far avoided a lockdown.

The cabinet gathering due to take place at 9.30am on Friday will come ahead of the official release of the latest infections data later in the morning.“

Local emergency workers in the Dandenongs say the urgent delivery of generators to storm-hit homes last weekend was delayed by 24 hours in freezing temperatures after authorities failed to supply batteries and fuel, then made emergency services workers wait until television crews arrived.

What’s the go with waiting for the TV crews ?
Spin, spin, spin from the Victorian public service.
    I am sick of it.

The Dawn Patrol ……………… is in moderation.

Too many articles from NewsCorp publications ?

  17. What’s the go with waiting for the TV crews ?

I don’t know. You should ask your mates in the federal Liberals. 😐

  18. Barnaby might run a few animals on his land, but he’s no farmer in the modern sense. In the Tassie edition of The Drum this week, we heard how they use practical science to balance animals’ diet and look after the soil. They also understand climate/weather. Barnaby’s a charlatan.

  19. Morning all. I have to agree with the following from Cat.
“ We may have poked fun at Michael McCormack and his team of Nationals Ministers, but there was some genuine talent among them, like Darren Chester, but it seems embittered Barnaby is having none of that:”

The proportion of Ministers in the nationals ranks is extraordinary to start with relative to their numbers. Chester is wanted to be retained by Veterans advocates, a demographic that normally votes for the government. So incredibly short sighted to boot him out.

Also Barnaby only won the leadership by one vote. His hold on power is tenuous. If he had brains he would try to woo more MPs to his side. He is no master strategist; just a bullying exploiter.

    “Done! Gotta love bipartisanship!”

    Greg Jericho @GrogsGamut

In effect the LNP hated having to put on record their agreement with One Nation on race issues, and the ALP hated having to put on record their lack of agreement with the Greens on climate change (and other) issues

  24. If he had brains he would try to woo more MPs to his side.

That’s the problem you see. He doesn’t have much and most of what he does have is not located on the “head” sitting on his shoulders.

A dedicated 24-hour Sky News Regional channel will become available on free-to-air television to an estimated 7 million rural and regional Australians in August across the Southern Cross Austereo network.

It will carry the metropolitan-based channel’s daily news coverage, as well as its evening line-up of conservative commentators like Alan Jones, Andrew Bolt, Chris Kenny, Paul Murray and Tony Abbott’s former chief of staff, Peta Credlin.

The announcement has been welcomed by some in regional communities, but former prime minister Kevin Rudd believes Sky News’ continued presence in the regions will influence political debates and even local elections in the coming decade.

    – regional Australia don’t need 24/7 brain washing news.

    They want action.

What’s the go with waiting for the TV crews ?
Spin, spin, spin from the Victorian public service.
    I am sick of it

Are you sure it was the state government. The only footage I saw was the ADF putting together and delivering Generators.

And I agree it was pretty tacky.

  27. Socrates
The Nats pool of MPs is so small it is all up close and so would be very personal. Nothing more bitter than a family quarrel.

    Scott.
I blame KK. She was the 1st to start playing Covid politics with the Ruby Princess.

Boarder fuckers are in charge of who is allowed and who doesn’t the same way refugees get treated.

Nsw parliament in which the Ruby was docked in.

After all the most famous speech:
“We will decide who comes to our country”.

So it was Scotty from Marketing behind it!?!

  30. Cat:

From what I’ve heard, Entsch was planning to retire but has since changed his mind. Given how marginal Leichhardt is, its traditional status as a bellwether, and Labor’s recent success in the corresponding state electorates, I imagine ensuring the seat doesn’t fall played a part in his decision.

EDIT: Of course, Entsch already retired in 2007, which was also the one time Labor has won the seat since 1993, before coming back three years later.

  31. And the Liberal Party have never played politics with the virus!?!

Pull the other one, Taylormade, what do you think we are? Murdoch media consumers!?! 😆

  32. From William’s post:

but with Labor leading… 57-43 in Tasmania.

Poor sample, or is something going on down there I was unaware of?

I just read, for probably the same sort of reason, that Barnaby Joyce is trying to talk George Christensen out of retiring at the next election as well.

  34. Thanks BK. On Ben RS I dod not know how the legal decision will turn out as defamation can occur even with truth. But in the war for public opinion I think the defense has already won because BRS’s own words show at least some of the reported allegations had substance.

On Gladys and the Sydney outbreak, you have to wonder if health advice was not for a lockdown already. Was Gladys delaying to Friday to manage news cycles? I hope not.

    Have a good day all.

  35. Brian Mitchell has been a fantastic Member for Lyons. Maybe he has engendered a revival of fortunes for Labor in Tasmania? 🙂

  36. Gladys Berejiklian will delay calling a Lockdown full stop. It’s School Holidays from today and her popularity would take a hit if she did.

Anyway, the NSW CHO, Dr Kerry Chant, has stated that the Contact Tracers are on top of it and we don’t have to have a Lockdown.

    We’ll see.

  37. Virginia Trioli reporting no new infections in Victoria …….

The ABC understands Victoria has recorded no new local COVID cases beyond the two positive results announced yesterday that were linked to the Sydney outbreak.

A Melbourne man in his 60s tested positive yesterday after returning from Sydney on the weekend, and his co-worker at the Sandringham Dry Cleaners has also tested positive.

Today’s official numbers from Victorian authorities will list those two cases.

Given the sample size of 2780 Tassie’s share would be 60. So plenty of room for non representitive sample.

  39. The ABC needs to seriously consider whether Hamish is up to the job of controlling his panellists on Q&A. Trioli would never have allowed Hollie Hughes to get away with that screeching farrago of lies and rudeness.

Some experts, like Bill Bowtell, could well decide never to appear again.

  40. C@tmomma,

Bass is currently the LNP’s most marginal electorate, held by a 0.41% margin on the 2PP. From memory (not my best feature) we only need about 260 people to change their vote for the seat to swing back to Labor.

  41. I just read, for probably the same sort of reason, that Barnaby Joyce is trying to talk George Christensen out of retiring at the next election as well.

Probably the right call, as much as I may loathe Christensen. One Nation seems to have collapsed, Palmer is a joke, QLD Labor did (relatively) well in many of the coal seats in 2020, and federal Labor seems to be pitching things right in its approach to regional Queensland. I think we’ll probably see a reversal of a lot of the 2019 mining-seat swings – maybe not enough for Labor to get over the line in many of them, but enough to make the LNP justifiably nervous.

Thanks for that, Taz. How’s the Liberal MP travelling there?

  43. For a year and a half we have been fed a false narrative that has seen people obsessively washing their hands and being reassured by “deep cleaning”

Certainly normal colds and flu are way down, as attested by peoples’ personal experience and statistics. Don’t know about gastro but I expect that it would be way down also.
