Essential Research: coronavirus restrictions and conspiracy theories

A poll suggests a significant proportion of the population believes coronavirus was engineered in a Chinese laboratory, but other conspiracy theories remain consigned to the fringe.

Courtesy of The Guardian, some headline results of another weekly Essential Research poll on coronavirus, the full report of which should be published later today. This includes regular questions on federal and state governments’ handling with the crisis, of which we are only told that respondents remain highly positive, and on easing restrictions, for which we are told only 25% now consider it too soon, which is down two on last time and has been consistently declining over five surveys.

Beyond that, the survey gauged response to a number of what might be described as conspiracy theories concerning the virus. By far the most popular was the notion that the virus “was engineered and released from a Chinese laboratory in Wuhan”, which has received a certain amount of encouragement from the Daily Telegraph but is starkly at odds with the scientific consensus. Agreement and disagreement with this proposition was tied on 39%.

Thirteen per cent subscribed to a theory that Bill Gates was involved in the creation and spread of the virus, with 71% disagreeing; 13% agreed the virus was not dangerous and was being used to force people to get vaccines, with 79% disagreeing; 12% thought the 5G network was being used to spread the virus, with 75% disagreeing; and 20% agreed the number of deaths was being exaggerated, with “more than 70%” disagreeing. The poll also found 77% agreed that the outbreak in China was worse than the official statistics showed.

The poll was conducted Thursday to Sunday from a sample of 1073.

UPDATE: Full report here.

Rakali according to Turnbull I’m a fibre zealot

Fibre is very good for you, I believe.

    Is that Malcolm Turnbull?

  2. It would be nice if certain parties would define the “right way” to criticise Labor’s organisation, methods, strategies (even, gulp, policies)…

I don’t mind mundo. He’s wasting his time though. Maybe he is a tory in disguise but you can’t judge that simply on the fact that he points out that Labor is being weak in its messaging.

  3. I hope the absence of minor parties and cross benchers on Insiders is Speers and not coronavirus. It’s been so great the past few months to hear from the government and the alternate government, no pesky, irrelevant tantrums from people who will never be the decision-makers.

  4. Unfortunately the panels have taken a nosedive however.

  5. Seriously someone was suggesting 50 people eating outdoors in winter – WTF!

We can do it in SA of 50 people indoors now (not the ridiculous 10 indoors and 10 outdoors we currently have) and it should be done with expectation to move to 100 by the end of June.

A restuarant has general rule of 1 staff for 10 people therefore with 20 you can only have a chef and a waiter. Bloody ridiculous.

  6. Only one ever built!

I like this: “Despite its vast size, the Brabazon was designed to carry a total of only 100 passengers, each one being allocated their own spacious area about the size of the entire interior of a small car”.

It would be perfect for covid safe travel!

“Except that it would be nice to see a Greens rep interviewed on policy, not politics.”

Both major parties and the Murdoch press are not keen to have a dispassionate, rational analysis and discussion of Greens’ policies. It serves their shared agenda to maintain the status quo aka business as usual.

  8. I didn’t mind mundo at first. Then he criticised something I said. Now I must crush him.

Definitely a unique sentiment I have never seen before about any poster on here or on any other political forum of discussion…

Ah, reference is a bit dated for me, TBH.

For the record, I did take the comment with the irony intended. I just added my own irony to it. Apologies if it seemed like I was taking it seriously.

  11. It is good to see one impact of what is extremely likely to be the first year in which Australia’s population has fallen since Federation: more affordable housing.

S—-WEEET! If only we could have a pandemic every year!

  12. I actually was serious about crushing mundo. But seeing that everyone is taking it as a joke I will just pretend as well. Hahah. Crush mundo….. what a joke!!! hahahaha.

With neither the government or the opposition holding a majority in the Senate, whenever they disagree on Senate votes, the crossbench (Greens, minor parties and independents) is very relevant to the outcome.

We also continue to be a democracy where anybody can seek election where governments and oppositions have to earn their power from votes not system of undemocratic legally entrenched duopoly.

  15. I dont know why labor keep pushing Wong forward on shows like Q&A and Insiders. They need to introduce some new blood on shows like these. She is seen as damaged goods by ordinary Australians after her role in the Rudd/ Gillard mess.

  16. A low standard when Annabel Crabb is the brightest on the panel…

Stop right there. That’s just way too provocative for those here who obviously support a one-party state. Labor and only Labor deserve to be in government.

    Yeah, sure!

You just don’t like being reminded how a FM should react and behave.

  19. Trying to catch up but a long way behind on pages, so hope this hasn’t dropped as a topic of discussion.

How can the ATO make a $60B error and not notice it for a month.

The ATO never seemed to have any problems linking the tax accounts of some spotty faced teenager stacking shelves in the supermarket who under estimated his/her hours and was overpaid a couple of hundred dollars and subsequently had the debt thugs sicced on them. But now we find the ATO cannot link the tax account of ‘Joe the builder’ etc. who last year claimed a single employee but this year when government were going to pay his employees suddenly him and another 500 employers had 1,500 on their books.

You can colour it any way you wish but it still has the definite tinge of c**p.

  20. I dont know why labor keep pushing Wong forward on shows like Q&A and Insiders.

Because she’s a top communicator and just a bit of a star.
