Essential Research coronavirus latest

Support rising for an easing of coronavirus restrictions, and strong backing for Kristina Keneally’s contentious call for migration cuts.

The usual weekly Essential Research coronavirus poll finds “only a quarter” of respondents now consider it too soon to be easing coronavirus restrictions, down from a peak of 49% in mid-April. There was also strong support for a range of fresh restrictions being imposed if there is a new surge of cases, but not for making the coronavirus app compulsory, which only 38% supported. Only 45% were confident the government would be able to adequately protect data from the app, and 44% were confident the government itself would not misuse it. Kristina Keneally’s call for a reduction in temporary migration after the pandemic had the support of 67% of respondents. All this detail is derived from The Guardian, which also tells us that the number of respondents who are “quite concerned” about the virus is up three points since last week to 49%, but without the “very concerned” figure it’s hard to know what if anything to make of that. The full report from the pollster should be published later today.

UPDATE: Full report here. The government reaches new heights on the eighth weekly iteration of the question as to how well it is handling the crisis, with good up five points to 71% and poor down one to 13%. The goodwill extends to state governments, who are collectively up three on good to 73% and steady on poor at 12%. The poll was conducted Thursday to Sunday from a sample of 1067.

Western Australia’s premier, Mark McGowan, says WA schools had 82% attendance yesterday.

There’s no doubt that most West Australians feel reasonably “safe” from COVID19 at the moment….something that’s reflected in the very high approval/net-sat for the Premier. This bodes quite well for the economy…for labour force participation, for confidence, consumer spending, real estate and investment.

Of course, there will be some very big adjustments made in many businesses, as some export-dependent sectors will remain shut down for many months or even years. But on the whole, there’s a sense of optimism here. This should be reflected in a good electoral result for Labor in March next year. To their credit, the Opposition here has not tried to politicise the COVID response as it’s been rolled out. This will likely also improve their standing too. There is a notable sense of shared commitment…of a community that has worked and is working together. People are drawing a lot of satisfaction from that.

  2. “ Even with a more competitive fleet, Rex still faces the fact that over the years, several companies have tried to compete on intercapital and resort routes and all have failed under competition from Qantas. There is no reason the believe that Rex will beat the odds this time.”

Terminal access is what killed the previous competitors. Rex has that covered.

You are right though. Their Saabs are not fit for purpose, except perhaps for Sydney-Canberra Anne Melbourne-Canberra flights. I’m pretty sure that Rex is looking at taking over the leases of some small jets (ie. 737, Embraer or Airbuus A320s) – planes that carry between 80 and 120 passengers. Their existing terminal facilities should be able to cope.

  3. Of course, there will be some very big adjustments made in many businesses, as some export-dependent sectors will remain shut down for many months or even years.

WA was either effectively in recession of a hairs width on the right side of recession we are heavily exposed to LNG, which is largely exposed to the oil price, 1000s of jobs will go, they’ve started already.

We will need a serious economic stimulus in WA before March if they don’t want to face the polls as emotional depression bites with economic depression.

  4. Rex could make a bit of an effort to fly to regional centres like Broken Hill which they seem to be incapable of servicing.

I just saw a clip on ABC24 of Chalmers speaking in parliament and was shocked to see a clearly semi-comatose Richard Marles sitting behind him. He at least needs to attend parliament in a fully conscious and professional state of mind.

If Marles isn’t up for another couple of terms in opposition he should piss off now.

  8. A woodmac paper on the possible paths post covid-19 considers an option where Govt deliberately accelerates the path to renewables as a tool to ameliorate the economic downturn and prepare for the economy of the future. Scotty from Marketing will NOT be doing that, but WA could take projects like that by the throat and have a massive economic win if McGowan has any vision.

Trump: “You know what crimes he committed. You just won’t report it.”

National data on migration includes all temporary visa holders of which there are many classes so Temporary Employment Visa Holders and Students who are allowed to work under their Visa are both Temporary Migrants. Our Net Migration figures take into account the net change in Temporary Visa Holders, also called Temporary Migrants. I don’t see how that is such a hard definition to understand or accept
    ———————————————–
The visa program needs to be simplified to only three or four different visas at most.

“You forgot dogs. They have no more standing on this continent than cats. You wanna kill pets, you have to kill all the pets. ”

No problem with shooting feral dogs but what about Dingo crosses? There aren’t many pure breed Dingos out there anymore.

And more importantly Dogs are far superior pets to Cats.

Dogs actually like humans and are wonderful companions – unlike cats.
Dogs are used are very useful in lots of different roles in society – unlike cats.
Domestic dogs kill very few native birds and fauna – unlike cats.
    ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
I disagree. As a lover of both dogs and cats I can testify to the personal affection of both types of pets.
Dogs’ love is based more on the fact that you are their pack leader. Cats, being loners, have to be won over and their affection earned.
Cats’ “love” is more transactional, but it is no less genuine.
I suspect that is why some people don’t like cats, especially if they think they’re entitled to unconditional love from their charges.

The barley thing has been around for a while. Add it to the holding up of iron ore and coal in their ports. And now the beef thing. They are masters of economic warfare.

The question for Australians is which principles are we prepared to die in an economic ditch for?

  22. I mean, we haven’t even seen how many people will suffer from Post Viral Syndrome, Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (ME), or Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, call it what you like, as a result of this virus, but it would be a brave Conservative that steps up to the plate to dismiss it as all in people’s imaginations again.

  23. Feral dogs and feral cats are as bad as each other but it could said that feral dogs are worst because they hunt in packs and will hunt for hours on end over large distances while cats like to hunt solo and will sleep long periods of time.

  24. Henry,

The only nasty dogs I’ve encountered have been created by abusive owners.

I’ve met plenty of nasty cats that are just that way.

There’s a reason why dogs are called our best friends.

  25. I’ve done a LOT of Dog, and Cat, Minding and I can safely say that some dogs, with the best will in the world of their owners, are just pigs. One particular Irish Wolfhound comes to mind.

  26. The Chinese Communists and the Australian Liberal National Coalition Trickledown Government,
    The common bond:barley and bullshit
(Although Trump’s ‘the land of the free’ is probably still the world leader in producing these products)

  27. The federal court has launched a snap investigation of how it potentially broke the law an estimated 400 times by revealing the names of asylum seekers on a public website.

John McMillan, a senior lawyer, former commonwealth ombudsman, privacy commissioner and inspector general of intelligence, is conducting a review into how the names of some of the most vulnerable people to come before the court were published on the commonwealth courts portal.

McMillan’s appointment was announced on 28 April and he is scheduled to report to the court next month.

The court pulled down the portal, which is widely used by lawyers, journalists and the general public, in late March after the ABC revealed the data breach.

  28. I’ll give you guys some free advice.

Ignore everything and anything that Trump says. I can’t stand watching, listening to or reading what he has said or tweets so I don’t.

The only thing that matters is what the US does.

They pulled the two Patriot batteries out of the Saudi oil fields this week.

They didn’t shoot up the Iranian speedboats harassing their ships last week.

This is interesting but under reported and under analysed.

  29. We have established that the preferred location for all five new Warramanga Dams and five desal plants which will be required to water an additional 25 million people by 2050 is not Bandt’s electorate!

Plus Bandt will be out on the streets leading the people’s rebellion if anyone wants to build a new dam.

    I’m interested. Go on.

  31. Trump betrayed the Kurds.
Trump ditched them with less than 24 hours notice.
After first setting it up with a phone call with that peerless purveyor of democracy, Erdogan.
The day after Trump made his announcement the Turks invaded Syria.
Left without air support and heavy weapons support the Kurds had to flee in their tens of thousands.
Good bye and thanks for coming, Trump!

Relying on what Trump says or does is no substitute for a real security policy. We are naked.

  32. Cats have been fingered for far more extinctions than dogs.

I met a dude on KI training dogs in feral cat eradication programs. The dogs are proving useful as a primary tool and in the essential final roundup of the hard to find cats in difficult terrain. They are quite serious about eradicating cats entirely from the island and exporting the techniques elsewhere.

  33. SimonKatich
“They are quite serious about eradicating cats entirely from the island and exporting the techniques elsewhere.”

I wish we on the continent would import his techniques. The only good feral cat is a dead feral cat.

  34. I have been thinking for some time a clever dog like this would be useful on my block in ‘convincing’ neighbourhood cats and foxes to ‘avoid’ coming in and eating my native birds.

  35. Boerwar
The reason for that is the feral dogs eat mostly larger pray like feral deer that is often left behind by deer hunters or they will go for livestock but feral cats being smaller animals go for smaller animals which tend to be native.

  36. Have we worked out how to catch a cane toad yet?

I figured out at a young age to only hit them with hockey sticks when wearing a face mask.

  37. “the problem with our meat is because of a ‘technical matter’.“
    —————
I don’t think “Technical Matter” will catch on as a replacement for “Scomo”.
