Newspoll: 52-48 to Labor

Labor slightly widens the lead it opened in the previous Newspoll, and Anthony Albanese maintains his ascendancy as preferred prime minister despite a slight fall in his personal ratings.

The Australian reports the latest Newspoll has Labor’s two-party lead widening from 51-49 to 52-48 since the previous poll three weeks ago. Both major parties are down on the primary vote, the Coalition by two to 38% and Labor by one to 35%, while the Greens are up one to 13% (equalling their best result since 2011) and One Nation is steady at 4%. Scott Morrison’s personal ratings are unchanged after the hit he suffered in the previous poll, at 37% approval and 59% disapproval, while a spike in Anthony Albanese’s ratings last time has failed to completely stick, with his approval down three to 43% and disapproval up three to 40% (compared with 40% and 41% in the poll before). However, Albanese maintains the lead on preferred prime minister he opened up in the last poll, which is out slightly from 43-39 to 43-38. The poll was conducted Wednesday to Sunday from a sample of 1510.

  1. Molan does the typical RWNJ thing: interrupts Mann with an attempted gotcha.
Gets blowback from Mann with the facts.
    Mann gets an enthusiastic clap.
Molan insists on a fact check.
Mann trashes Molan in this one.

    wombat – you about?

What about gloves and hand sanitisers?

One thing I think is abysmally missing on planes, and any other number of places for that matter, is hand cleaning stations. Ships have them I believe outside dining rooms; I know a Woollies with wet towels to clean your trolley. But hand contact with a fresh drop if viral load seems muchly overlooked.

Or gloves. The Queen always wears gloves. Can’t touch dirty.

2019-nCoV (nCoV19) is an enveloped RNA virus with physical properties very similar to SARS- & MERS-CoVs: it is very susceptible to drying and hence alcohol (though this takes ~ 30sec to work). nCoV19 seems to be shed (apparently more efficiently than in SARS or MERS) from the human respiratory tract (mouth, nose, sinuses, airways & lungs) in the form of infectious droplets – and possibly as airborne viral particles though we don’t yet know this for sure. Like SARS, it may also be shed in faeces (shit happens – it was a major vector in the Amoy Gardens outbreak of SARS in Hong Kong).

Most transmission seems to be by contact of the mouth, nose or other mucous membranes with hands (or fomites) contaminated by viable viral particles in droplets that have not dried out. Surgical masks work mainly by preventing contact with the mouth and nose, not by filtering out airborne virus, which is why most do not need fit-tested N95 or P2 masks – unless one is engaged in an aerosolising proceedure, like intubation or NIV.

Decontamination with alcohol based gel works well, provided one does it every time one touches a surface and waits the 30 seconds for it to dehydrate the virus (more if in mucous or shit) before touching ones mucous membranes. This is difficult to maintain. Gloves have to be removed or decontaminated before touching mucous membranes. Hand washing with soap & water is better for removing mucous (or shit), but takes longer (>60 seconds) to dry.

TL:DR – just like the anaesthetic bay: gel & a surgical mask (and not touching ones mouth) are much more practical than gloves.

LEADING Labor MP Bill Shorten has confirmed he’s expecting a child with girlfriend Chloe Bryce, the daughter of the Governor-General, as both battle messy divorces with their previous partners.

Your gotcha is that Shorten had a girlfriend while in the midst of his divorce proceedings? You’ve only got him on a technicality, if so. And a mild one at that.

Andrew Constance has become the most real politician in the country these last few weeks. #QandA

    Certainly from the coalition.

  5. That was poor form from Molan. Making this into a partisan political event when there are 300 people in the audience who want freakin answers.

  6. Someone asking the P1 question now.
Businesses who have lost business but who have not been burned down.
Constance amplifies the question. He does a devastating commentary on the Fed ‘assistance’ of debt assistance and $50,000… which you only get if you have burned out.

A medal for turning up to a Nats caucus.

  9. Nath mentioned earlier that some of his posts did not appear.

There is a red bin with a “request deletion” message on my home computer next to all Nath’s post.

Others may have been endowed with the same facility (similar things have happened from time to time) and may have made the request. I have not.

But that may be the cause of his problem.

I have always assumed that we are on track for a doubling of atmospheric CO2 (“2XCO2”), if not 3XCO2 or 4XCO2. After all, humanity’s CO2 emissions continue to increase, and even if they stop increasing, won’t atmospheric CO2 continue to rise?

The statistical significance of focus groups
I’ve generally taken a pretty dim view of focus groups, which seem to be used mostly to detect and amplify unthinking prejudices. But, I have to admit, that probably is due at least in part to the fact that my prejudices aren’t very close to those of the median focus group participant. So, it wasn’t until I saw focus group results matching my own thoughts that I paid any attention to the question of whether the results actually meant anything.
Given the age couldn’t bring themselves to publish the newspoll results this is an important article ( in my view).

What Auschwitz means for the modern state
The death camps of the Second World War remain inimitable on some impossibly cruel level. They were designed to liquidate and vanish an entire race of people, part of a broader racial war waged by the Third Reich. Others were also designated for a state-enforced disappearance: the Romani, political dissidents, homosexuals. But the language of Auschwitz-Birkenau, its desensitised approach to suffering, its rendering of suffering as inconsequential and bureaucratic, remains its most enduring and callous legacy.

  12. If this does not wake the Morrison Government up, nothing will.
They are habituated to fucking over ‘leaners’.
    They cannot help themselves.
But these ‘leaners’ are their major political target: small business.

  13. Good news about Bloomberg offering up to a billion dollars.

Concentrated into the key states and towns that’s going to be massive. Saturation of ads to the extent of making it hard for Trump to get airtime. Yes.. please..

(This is what Palmer did and it actually worked)

  14. Jim Molan is the guy who got his daughter, Erin, to interview the dirty old man who tried to kiss the young lady in Cobargo without permission, for her Channel 9 Roadshow to the bushfire affected areas.

  15. I’m not watching (not up for it yet) but to the credit of NSW Govt, I received a personalised phone call from a Rural Assistance person who by whatever means (fire map I suppose) knew we had been burnt out and was offering help with taking care of stock – feed, infrastructure, etc. She then sent a text with her name and number to be forwarded to anyone I knew who was needy.

  16. Sharri Markson@SharriMarkson
Nats doing the numbers tonight claim Barnaby will scrape through as leader with 11 votes to McCormack’s 10. Still 11 hours to go though! #NatSpill

  17. Molan thought he was there to do last year’s Q&A: fighting the political gotchas, running the scripted lines, winning the politics.

It has more or less blown up in his face.

Most of the discourse of the Q&A is on a completely different plane.

  18. Molan thought he was there to do last year’s Q&A: fighting the political gotchas, running the scripted lines, winning the politics.

I was just thinking the exact same thing.

  19. Itza,
Do you have any idea what the NSW government is doing about the native animals that have had their habitat destroyed by the bushfires? You said the Rural Assistance lady offered help with feed for stock, but what about the native animals?

  20. Molan has his confidence dented. Ammming and arhhhing while bullshitting about the government want to listen to indigenous fire management.

When have this mob ever wanted to listen to indigenous voices.

  21. Okay I’m not upset anymore this is just hilarious!

Molan is a walking advertisement for the numpties inside the coalition.
