BludgerTrack: 53.4-46.6 to Labor

Little change on the BludgerTrack poll aggregate, nor in the latest polls on same-sex marriage, which continue to show an emphatic margin in favour of “yes”.

Three new polls this week, from Newspoll, YouGov and Essential, have done precisely nothing to BludgerTrack’s two-party preferred trend reading, and next to nothing on the primary vote. The seat projection is likewise unchanged, although the Coalition is down one in Victoria and up one in Queensland. There’s a bit more excitement on the leadership ratings, following a poor set of numbers for Malcolm Turnbull from Newspoll. Full results can be found on the sidebar, where they belong.

Other poll news:

• A further finding from this week’s Newspoll tells a familiar story in relation to same-sex marriage, with yes leading 59% to 35%, out from 56% to 37% a fortnight ago. Of those who have voted, the lead for yes was 62% to 35%. Seventy-six per cent report having voted, which sits very well indeed with the Australian Bureau of Statistics’ recent estimate of 77% as of Friday. A further 10% of Newspoll respondents said they would “definitely” vote, though one suspects a number of those are stretching the definition of “definitely”. Survey forms have to be with the ABS by Tuesday to be included in the count.

• BuzzFeed reports a Galaxy poll conducted for gay rights group PFLAG found 78% support for the proposition that same-sex couples should be “treated the same under the law compared with other couples” in the event of a yes vote in the survey, though I suspect some respondents were unsure what to make of the question.

• A poll on attitudes to indigenous constitutional recognition has been published by the Gilbert and Tobin Centre of Public Law at the University of New South Wales. Its main finding is that 71.7% would support recognition of the history and culture of indigenous peoples in the constitution, and 60.7% support a representative body to advise on issues affecting indigenous people. The poll was conducted by OmniPoll, a firm founded by (among others) former Newspoll director Martin O’Shannessy.

  2. Hi William,

Congratulations on the clean break with Crikey for PB. The connection served a useful purpose for a number of years. However, the incompatabilities have been on display for some time.

Hopefully, the PB diaspora will rally to the cause and keep the ship afloat for this new stand alone adventure.

    Cheers

  6. Referencing the Book of Joshua, EPA head Scott Pruitt announced sweeping changes to the agency’s science advisory boards, opening the door to more input from the business world.

The Environmental Protection Agency announced on Tuesday afternoon sweeping changes to who can advise the agency on its research and regulatory priorities, opening the door to more industry participation.

Effective immediately, scientists who receive EPA funding cannot serve on the agency’s three major advisory groups. Some Republican lawmakers have been pushing for similar changes to the agency’s advisory boards for years.

“We want to ensure that there’s integrity in the process and that the scientists that are advising us are doing so without any type of appearance of conflict of interest,” EPA head Scott Pruitt said at a press conference announcing the directive.

Pruitt used a story from the Book of Joshua to help explain the new policy.

  7. So the ABC demanded evidence that people are not dual citizens. Almost all have declined….lol
So they aresyaing they are all suspect because the ABC says so.?
The only people the politicians have to answer to respect of citizenship is the parliament and courts. I hope the ALP tell the ABC to rack off.

  8. So Turnbull got no advance warning from Parry.

A bit rude, I’d say, but then he’s was one of Abetz’s people so what would you expect.

  9. CTar:

And it’s beyond belief that Parry only now thinks to check on his own circumstances after how much time has this dual citizenship stuff been front page news now?

At least he’s resigning from parliament and doing the right thing.

  10. Damn. I will have to junk my fevered plans for the Poll Bludgers Jamboree and Rodeo Roundup.

Never mind I will canvas the Bludgers to find a rear end for the horse for what I hope will be William’s end of year argument and duelling banjo’s hip hop parade.

    😎

Help. AR – please enable your wonderful C+ for this site. I promise to be nice to you at the Poll Bludgers parties.

  11. ‘fess

only now thinks to check on his own circumstances

And he would have been 99.9% sure his election was invalid. His father may have become an Australian citizen but the number that would also do the ‘renounce’ UK citizenship thing would be very small. Why would they?

It has not yet been established that Trump or his entourage were turned by the Russians. But Trump and his team were easy prey, according to an expert.

  20. With One Answer Sarah Huckabee Sanders Confirms That Trump’s Mind Is Gone

At the White House daily briefing, Sarah Huckabee Sanders was asked if Trump wants the tax reform bill to be called the Cut Cut Cut Act, and her answer revealed just how far gone Trump is.

Huckabee Sanders was asked if Trump wants to title the bill The Cut Cut Cut Act, and she answered, “Look. I think the President if it’s called the cut cut bill great. I think the biggest priority he has is making sure it does what he’s laid out are his priorities in that piece of legislation.”

    That wasn’t a no.

Huckabee Sanders never denied a report that Trump is currently fighting with Paul Ryan and House Republicans because he is insisting that the tax reform bill be called the cut cut cut bill. The President Of The United States is mentally gone. There can be no other explanation for why he would give a piece of legislation such an idiotic name. Legislators take the naming of bills seriously because they want the bill to be taken seriously.

Cut cut cut sounds like something a five-year-old would come up with for a title.

The President can’t be trusted to give interviews with real journalists, make condolence calls, or even title a bill.

Sarah Huckabee Sanders confirmed with her answer. Trump’s lights are on, but no one is home.

  21. BUSTED: Evidence mounts that Jeff Sessions perjured himself under Al Franken questioning

Attorney General Jeff Sessions is suddenly facing an active dilemma.

A guilty plea signed last month by one of his former Trump campaign underlings revealed this week shows he likely perjured himself during his confirmation hearing — and he doesn’t have a good option to wriggle out of it.

Sessions told Sen. Al Franken (D-MN) at the January hearing that he was “not aware” of evidence that anyone affiliated with the Trump campaign communicated with the Russian government during the campaign, according to the New Republic.

He walked back those claims last month during another Senate hearing, telling Franken he “conducted no improper discussions with Russians at any time regarding the campaign or any other item facing this country.”

But court filings, and a new CNN report, show he was aware of evidence that at least one campaign associate was in contact with Russia.

  22. Trump’s inner circle admits Mueller indictments mean it’s time to plan president’s endgame: report

President Donald Trump’s White House is reeling in the aftermath of two high-profile indictments of former campaign aides and the arrest and guilty plea of another, said Vanity Fair‘s Gabriel Sherman on Wednesday.

As panic tightens its grip on the West Wing, some in the president’s inner circle have begun to dread the possibility of impeachment.

“Here’s what Manafort’s indictment tells me: Mueller is going to go over every financial dealing of Jared Kushner and the Trump Organization,” said former Trump campaign aide Sam Nunberg to Sherman. “Trump is at 33 percent in Gallup. You can’t go any lower. He’s f*cked.”

  23. Congratulations on the Crikey separation William. I have enjoyed Poll Bludger for the 11 (or more) years I have been a regular reader, and occasional contributor! I will remain a Crikey subscriber, but I am pleased to see Poll Bludger back again as a stand alone enterprise. Best wishes for the future.

  24. Phoenix Red, yep me too. I noticed earlier there was a reply button. This button seems to have disappeared, with sometimes the word ‘reply’ appearing at the bottom of a post.

Having said that, it is a vast improvement to what I had before. Very quick and the posts seem to be displayed in time order.

  25. As the walls cave in on them both, public feud erupts between Donald Trump and Jared Kushner

    Bill Palmer

Donald Trump, in the midst of arrests and guilty pleas in a Russia scandal that will ultimately lead directly back to him, is watching his world crumble around him by the day. Jared Kushner, who is in such deep trouble that pundits are debating whether they think he’s the next to get arrested, is also in freefall. So how are Trump and his son-in-law dealing with this? By taking it out on each other, in a feud that’s now spilled out into the public.

Trump is now calling up his friends and telling him that he believes Kushner is at fault for the rise of the Robert Mueller probe. Trump blames Kushner for having given him bad advice to fire National Security Adviser Michael Flynn (which turned the Trump-Russia scandal into something real in the minds of the average mainstream American) and to fire FBI Director James Comey (which led to the appointment of the Special Counsel). That prompted Trump’s friends to run to the media to push that narrative.

Numerous friends of Trump are now telling Vanity Fair that Trump thinks everything that’s going wrong is Kushner’s fault . Moreover, Trump’s friends wouldn’t be doing this unless Trump wanted this feud with Kushner to go public. Thus far Kushner – who doesn’t tweet and almost never speaks in public – hasn’t yet taken the bait. Nonetheless, this Trump-Kushner feud, or at least one half of it, is now playing out in public. This comes as both men are facing increasingly severe criminal trouble.

Robert Mueller is almost certainly investigating Jared Kushner for his secret meeting with a Russian government lawyer during the campaign, his secret meetings with the Russian Ambassador and the head of a Russian bank during the transition period, his relationship with Russian-tinged Trump campaign data firm Cambridge Analytica, and his shady business dealings. Mueller is investigating Donald Trump for everything under the sun.
