Newspoll: 54-46 to Labor

Turnbull down on approval, but steady on voting intention.

The first Newspoll result from The Australian in three weeks has Labor’s two-party lead unchanged at 54-46, from primary votes of Coalition 36% (steady), Labor 37% (down one), Greens 10% (up one) and One Nation 9% (up one). Malcolm Turnbull’s lead as preferred prime minister has narrowed slightly, from 42-31 to 41-33, and he has taken a knock on his personal ratings, with approval down three to 32% and disapproval up four to 56%. Bill Shorten is respectively steady on 33%, and up two to 55%. The poll was conducted Thursday to Sunday from a sample of 1583.

  1. Austria
    Greens eliminated
Social Democrats come in 3rd behind Right and Far Right, their worst result in fair elections since Franz Joseph was alive
A Right/Left coalition is possible but the vibe is for Right/Far Right

  2. The Catalonian leader appears to have taken his ‘How to Not Be a Spineless Pushover’ lessons directly from Malcolm Turnbull:

The President of Catalonia, Carles Puigdemont, failed to clarify Monday whether his administration had officially declared independence from Spain and instead called for talks.

In a letter to the Spanish Prime Mariano Rajoy, Puigdemont asked for two months of dialogue over the status of the region in northwest Spain, which held a disputed independence referendum on October 1.

    Such uninspiring meekness.

The power generation mechanism depicted there looks renewable, as long as they keep feeding Malcolm. Abbott would never go for it.

Personally, I’m no fan of parochial splittocracy. There are advantages of scale. The things that we have in common are actually more important than the things that set us apart from each other. We can see Rightist nationalism attracting support in Austria and the UK. We should remember the crimes carried out in Bosnia and Croatia. Then we should deplore the romance of the Basque, the Breton, the Gael and the Catalan.

AR – Really? And what cards does Puigdemont have to play?

The “my constituents voted for independence, despite widespread intimidation and violent oppression, and I’m going to honor their wishes and declare independence” card? He only needs the one.

I don’t disagree. But he promised independence, he held a referendum on it, and his people overwhelming voted for it.

He should keep his word (regardless of whether or not there’s any rational or ethical value in what he promised to do). Besides, that would be more interesting to watch than two months of “let’s talk”.

Sadly for Aussie Shepherds, if the anal glands don’t get them, hip dyslplasia will.

I hope it’s neither, in your fellow’s case. Take care.

  8. Fairfax speculates on how the Senate cross bench would vote on an energy policy without a CET (Labor and Greens would oppose):

Difficult negotiations with the Senate crossbench are emerging as the Turnbull government’s only chance of passing its imminent energy package after Labor declared a bipartisan deal was dead without a clean energy target.

The government needs backing from 10 other senators to pass the long-awaited energy policy, which is due to be discussed at Tuesday’s Coalition party room meeting in Canberra.

  9. Good government, UK Tory style, destroy the country not the party!!

“A senior Tory minister said in an off the record interview “.. ….if we try to cancel BREXIT we destroy the party, if we go ahead we destroy the country, people voted for a fantasy”.

  11. The Brits, despite that renowned stiff upper lip, just didn’t think ahead, did they?

Colonise this, colonise that, yippee, we have access to so many resources. Let’s plunder.

A century later, it comes back to bite them on the bum, big time, as all those colonised coloured folk claim Britain as their birthright. And have the temerity to have a different God, too.

    You reap what you sow.

You can see why Cameron walked away.

  13. The French, too.

It was so easy to colonise.

Not so easy to get out of.

and the peasants, in both England and France, are revolting.

    Some call that terrorism.

Sadly, I can confirm this one. Mine cost me $1000. I was lucky, and spotted that something was wrong very early. The vet told me this is one of the most common things that dogs get stuck in their intestines.

But what scale ?. A very noticeable feature of those lists of top ten countries for various quality of life scores is their population size, 4-20 million seems to be the Goldilocks zone.

  17. Try this quick quiz. Who said the following and When:

“Plainly stated, in the absence of a clear carbon price signal either no investments will be made or investments will be made of new carbon intensive infrastructure because they are more profitable in a world where there is no price on carbon.”

    a. Kevin Rudd, 2007

    c. Malcolm Turnbull, 2010

Isn’t that the story of the Right at the moment?

Maintain power at any cost, f@#k the country!

  19. Citizen – I cannot conceive of a situation where X will not vote for the government’s energy bill. A few mill for one of his pet projects and he will sign on the dotted line. Won’t be able to help himself.

  20. kezza:

I wasn’t really following the Brexit thing at the time, other than through comments here so can’t really say.

  21. Latest Scottish Panelbase poll:

65% of Scots want to stay in EU (+4% since Jan)
50% believe brexit will weaken the Scottish economy.

    Westminster voting intentions:
    SNP 41% (+4% since June)
    Conserv 27% (-2%)
    Labour 24% (-3%)
    LibDem 6% (-1%)

Letter penned by someone who says they are very ordinary US voter.

I apologise for the behavior of our country. I wish I could limit it to our President but we elected him so he represents us, and his words and actions and embarrass all of us. I don’t agree with anything he says or does. He is destructive, dangerous and perhaps mentally ill. He has strained America’s relationships with everyone, he has lied and then lied to cover up the lies. He is superficial, unwilling to learn or lead and unwilling to examine or admit mistakes, lies or anything else. But, we elected him.

  23. Is there any more info on this off-the-record interview about Brexit? Are the Tories actually entertaining the idea of cancelling it?

I know SBD is no longer supported on Sony Plat Stations. I wonder it the same applies to Sony smart TVs.

Sorry for the shocking typing there!

What shocking typing? I didn’t notice.

I don’t have a telly, and I think I’m the only person in the universe who doesn’t have a mobile phone. There go the selfies (is there anything more obscene than selfies!)

this is just online stuff. I used to be able to just plug in, and away we go. Now, nothing. Says something about javascript, but that’s all up to date.

And, there’s no way to get in touch with the station direct.

Pisses me off, I’m now just watching re-runs of Criminal Intent/Forensic Files, or something of that genre, on ABC. I think I’ve seen them all. And Doc Martin, spare me.

If it weren’t for the fabulous oak tree next door (which blocks ALL transmissions) I might get really shitty about it.

  25. I;m reading this terribly dreary anthology of Australian writers.

some smart idea of getting writers to choose their favourite published story.

    It didn’t work.
