Newspoll: 54-46 to Labor

The final Newspoll of the year is consistent with an overall trend that gives the government a lot to think about over the summer break.

What will presumably be the last Newspoll of the year records no change on a fortnight ago, with Labor’s two-party lead at 54-46. Labor grabs the lead on the primary vote, moving up two points to 39% with the Coalition up one to 38% and the Greens down one to 12%. For the first time in a while, Tony Abbott’s personal ratings are not appreciably worse than last time, his approval steady at 33% and disapproval up one to 58%. Bill Shorten is respectively down two to 37% and steady at 43%, and the size of his lead as preferred prime minister is unchanged, being 43-36 last time and 44-37 this time.

and don’t even visit their websites. There are plenty of other sources of information without exposing yourself to the Murdoch view of the world.

[Have you read the Koran? I have read it (albeit in translation, which my Muslim friends have told me loses a lot of its nuances and makes it seem harsher than in Arabic) and I found it deeply disturbing and full of hatred for non-believers: just as are certain parts of the Bible (eg, Joshua, Daniel, Revelations).]

Both Old and New Testament of the Bible advocate violence and intolerance. Both were used to justify the Crusades, the Spanish Inquisition, innumerable pogroms across Europe, etc.

  3. What sort of arsehole posts under the nickname of a Nazi general who used Jewish people as human mine detectors and was responsible for the deaths of Australians during a war.

    An asshole, pure and simple.

Loonpond does the dirty work of wading through that sewer to let us know what is going on in their tiny batshit insane minds. It’s a horrid task no doubt, but a valuable public service.

  6. Kakuru,

You are quite correct. I remember once a while back there was a regular reading of the violent, prurient and generally absurd or unpleasant bits of the bible on JJJ. It was a hoot.

  7. You are kidding jules?

Erwin Rommel, aka the Desert Fox was no nazi. in fact he was forced to commit suicide when he was implicated in the July Plot. Winston Churchill was one of his biggest fans.

  8. All we need now is a yank telling us that our tough gun laws are to blame.

straight from the NRA playbook. Arrive first at the shooting and blame everyone else

Those particular passages in the Bible don’t get much play by advocates of “Judaeo-Christian values”.

  10. Re the gun law stuff: I can’t ever recall reading about a potential massacre in the US that was nipped in the bud by armed private citizens.

But who cares: the basis of the US gun obsession is cultural rather than rational. It is steeped in a history of subsistence farmers who used guns to hunt for food and to scare off outsiders. The children and grandchildren of these people who live in the towns and cities of the south and, to a lesser extent, the Midwest and prairie states, are the main supporters of this gun culture, which is far less strong in the old north and on the west coast.

Even though it seems incredibly strong now, I think it will slowly fade over the next few decades.

Locally, I’m rather scared about the growing power of the Shooters and Fishers party (parties?) under the upper house voting systems: despite not having much actual support in the community. This is an urgent problem that could be solved by the major parties coming together to take a principled stand to work together not to allow the votes of that party to determine the outcome of any vote on the floor of parliament. I reckon the anti-gun forces in Australia should start a movement and call on John Howard to lead it.

  11. Tony Burke just interviewed on 2UE. He was at the Mosque in Lakemba last night, it is in his electorate (Watson) and had nothing but praise for everything being done by the Lebanese Community.

They had a multi faith ceremony last night and as he said he never thought he would be in a Mosque where the Jewish leader would be saying prayers.

Something good is going to come out of all of this we are all getting a wake up call about just how good we can be.

  12. I think Puff is missing his true calling. He should really be in politics.

I can see it now, the House falls silent as Puff prepares for his maiden speech. A hush falls across the chamber and the public gallery waits in excited anticipation as Puff rises to deliver his honeyed words, words that will transfix the nation which will undoubtedly be a speech worthy of Martin luther King, JFK and Abraham lincoln all rolled into one.

He begins….. drumroll ….. “Piss off”

  13. I take it that Anderrs of the boltic could scarcely contain himself over the tragedy.

He was in the mode over the Nowergian killings until the news came out it was a good christian howie worshipper who did the killings.

  14. You goulish piece of tapeworm dung, DF, are lower than Scott Morrison’s moral compass, which could slide undetected under the slime on the bottom of a cesspool from a stable full of camels with diarrhea.

You obviously have a personality disorder very similar to Monis. You both seem oblivious to the grief and distress in others and also appear to enjoy disturbing people by cowardly attacking their emotional well-being in times of their stress.

You enjoy hurting your enemies, in fact the hurt is more enjoyable to you than winning an encounter. You derive great personal validation from the defensive responses of others, particularly those who do not slavishly admire your views.

You are intelligent enough to know when to strike, and to craft words into weapons that provoke outrage, designed to foster community dislocation. You are most comfortable when society is divided into strict groupings so you can always feel secure. You like to know where you stand and having enemies defines this state for you.

Ambiguity frustrates you, simplistic linear thinking makes you comfortable and secure.

You like and respond to perceived authority and are willing to outsource your moral code to gain the comfort you crave. You worship violent heroes who use weapons to impose the order you crave.

    How am I doing?

BTW, did you pull wings off flies as a kid?

The basis of the US gun obsession is the massive profits from the gun industry.

They have proved more effective in their lobbying, funding of front groups to promote their interests and propaganda than the tobacco industry.

  17. Rommel chose to commit suicide after being falsely implicated in the plot to kill Hitler. He chose suicide to keep his families wealth, power and reputation intact even tho he denied any involvement in the plot to those tasked with seeing him dead.

BTW – My wife’s grandad was a Rat of Tobruk you effing arsehole. Crawl back into your apple.

  18. Boris,
Yes, it is all about the gun lobby and their profits. Americans don’t buy one gun and have it all their lifetime. They buy dozens of guns each, and millions of rounds of ammo, and all the paraphernalia to go with it all. And as there is no actual war, except on the African Americans, none of it can be used very much, so the guns stockpile and new models are bought and added to the increasing hoards in the cupboards and garages of the USA.

    Talk about gullible.

I do not know how long you have been on PB but if you do not know by now that I am a woman you must be a truly self-absorbed twat.

Unless you are also on the trolling carousel?

Outside the NSW Legislative Council, the way to kill off the Shooters and Fishers is to get rid of group ticket voting.

In NSW the solution is to divide the Legislative Council into regions. The post-1999 election anti-tablecloth reform point was the perfect time to hold a referendum to introduce regions but that opportunity was wasted.

  22. I must away. Would love to stay and engage in nuanced, thoughtful, beautifully crafted arguments with Puff, the new Voltaire of our age but alas I have things to do.

Puff, the pleasure has been all yours.

  23. Sorry if I have upset you Puff. Please don’t burn me too much. I was just trying to make the point that is you are going to make assumptions about someone then you probably should at least know who you are making assumptions about.

Of course I know you are a fiery female dragon.

You are going to need more than a 🙂 when I get catch up with you. Which bit do you do want done with the free claw surgery first?

    OMG anything but that 🙁

That is a pretty pathetic grovel. But an apology it is. Maybe I will only slightly singe some useless bit hanging off of you somewhere?

  27. Andrew Bolt on Waleed Aly:

[Waleed Aly, Australia’s most prominent apologist for extremists, in my opinion, says the Islamic flag Monis forces his hostages to hold up against the shop window had no specific meaning]

How can this kind of crap get published?

Some positive news … illustrating how the community can rally together at times … fellow passengers defended the woman who was being abused and police removed him at Nth Melb

    http://www.heraldsun.com.au/news/victoria/police-remove-train-passenger-after-racial-abuse-on-melbourne-train/story-fni0fit3-1227157794733

This is why #illridewithyou has been so successful. There has already been cases of scum attacking minority passengers while the siege was taking place yesterday.
