ReachTEL: 51-49 to Coalition

A second post-Ruddstoration ReachTEL result finds little change on the first, and confirms the impression that Malcolm Turnbull is strongly favoured over both the current contenders.

ReachTEL has published results of an automated phone poll of 2922 respondents across the country which has the Coalition leading 51-49, down from 52-48 in the immediate aftermath of the leadership change, from primary votes of 39.3% for Labor (up 0.5%, 45.4% for the Coalition (up 0.3%) and 8.3% for the Greens (down 0.4%). ReachTEL shows Kevin Rudd with an unusually narrow 52.4-47.6 lead over Tony Abbott as preferred prime minister, but the knife is nonetheless turned on Abbott by a result on voting intention under a Malcolm Turnbull leadership which has the Coalition lead at 58-42. Turnbull is also favoured 65-35 over Rudd as preferred prime minister.

Get on a Boat, you go to PNG.

This sounds good, how many have Labor sent to PNG so far?

I understand there is about 400 on Manus Island, PNG at the moment.

There are 18307 islands in Indonesia according to the LAPAN aerial survey. The CIA factbook says 17000, presumably based on previous manual maps.
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_islands_of_Indonesia

Assuming the visual horizon at sea level on a fair sized ship is about 15km (10m viewing height) Truthy on a boat could patrol 30km of that border. It would take 100 fellow idiots simultaneously floating around on another 100 large boats to keep the whole thing under observation. Sometimes the waves are big enough to hide the smaller boats. Then what do you do at night?

  4. izatso?@2174

The deterent is to stop them Boarding.

    you get on a boat
    your found aboard a boat
    you *ARE* going to PNG

    NO More Boats.
    Not One.
Every Boat Will Go To PNG>

    Your cognitive difficulties are showing.

NO boat will go to PNG, just the occupants.

Just as good an outcome is achieved if the boats do not depart or if they choose to turn back.

The object of the exercise is really to stop them getting on a boat and ending up in Australia, not to send lots of people to PNG. PNG is just a means to an end and not the end in itself.

  5. Gold Coast $5.40

    Collingwood $1.20

So if the outsider of the two wins the game, the bookies get it wrong?

Since when did this come about?

Then there is the poor radar return from wooden boats particularly in high seas

Its not like they have a big yellow reflector sign on them

Well in this case the bookies did get it wrong.

My point was that the bookies do get it wrong..so quoting the bookies odds on who will win the election is fraught with error.

  8. [Enigma codebreaker Alan Turing to be given posthumous pardon

Actually the Government should be apologising to Turning and his family for its idiotic law rather than pardoning Turing for breaking an idiotic law.

  9. Tisme has admitted that he thinks the policy is a good one but the party line is that he doesn’t think Labor can implement it.

  10. “There have been misinformed reports that I have been campaigning for the past six years on the slogan ‘Stop the Boats’,” said Mr Abbott this evening. “This is a typical piece of Labor misinformation. In fact I have been campaigning on the slogan ‘Stop the Goats.’ There are millions of feral goats terrorising ordinary Australian mums and dads all over Australia and Labor has done nothing about this,” he said. “There’s only one way to stop the goats, and that’s to vote Liberal.”

  11. Bemused you couldn’t see the boats for counting islands.
The message was for the Boaties, but you were not receiving, either.

  12. The bookies never get it wrong unless they artificially change the odds.

The bookies don’t care about picking the winner they care about making money.

The punters putting money down can get it wrong but it’s a case of putting your money where your mouth is.

  13. Manchester United has had a party tonight, winning 5-1. All game they ran rings around the A-League All Stars, who reminded me of the hapless teams that play against the Harlem Globetrotters.

  14. Bemused I have been up since yesterday morning posting on here about this Deterent. You have no grounds or proof that will show cognitive aloofness on my part. you absolute Dickwit.

The politest form of flattery is immitation:

“There have been misinformed reports that I have been campaigning for the past six years on the slogan ‘Stop the Boats’,” said Mr Abbott this evening. “This is a typical piece of Labor misinformation. In fact I have been campaigning on the slogan ‘Stop the Votes”. There are millions of unregistered young adults that Liberal MPs are terrified will turn up to have their democratic right to vote. We have tried to prevent this through th courts and Labor has done nothing about this,” he said. “There’s only one way to stop the votes and that’s to vote Liberal.”

    Well, if you really want to get technical, and I really don’t want to bore readers, – the bookies officially get it wrong;

when they lose on their book.

[so quoting the bookies odds on who will win the election is fraught with error.]

It depends on who is making the analysis.

You can read my posts on the betting 😉

  17. [The punters putting money down can get it wrong but it’s a case of putting your money where your mouth is.]
Yep, that explains the Coalition’s current odds.

  18. Triton 2219
Yep – just left the tele and what a difference in skills, fitness, speed, teamwork and height (!) between Man U and Aussie footballers. Great viewing.

  19. [Expect Abbott and Scott Morrison to put out a press release attacking Rudd for destroying the people smuggling industry.]

Not only the people smuggling industry but also the leaky fishing boat construction industry and the bribes to officials industry. Not to mention the catering and accommodation industries on Java servicing the Iranian, Afghan and Sri Lankan travellers on their way to Australia. Also not to forget the airlines flying into Indonesia that will suddenly see a sharp downturn in passenger revenue.

All in all an economic disaster!

    Give her a medal.
I am sure your posting has really altered the course of history. 👿

  21. On sport, Gary Ablett had 49 (!) possessions against Collingwood today.

Meanwhile the Lions are only 13 points ahead vs the Demons at 3/4 time. Focus guys! You do not want to know the cricket score. At least John Howard is there having to watch it, like an Albatross around the necks of the Australian team.

I keep my betting to “2” up. Mainly on Anzac Day. Last Anzac Day I did the Gunfire Brekky, march then nto the 2 up. Had a few mates standing with me..I was doing so good I wouldn’t let them leave the place next to me, I was giving another bloke $100 to get our drinks, he kept the change, end of day (for me) I put $2,000 on the bar and took $6,2505 home. Lets not talk about losses…

I note that ST has again changed his view.

    Making money playing two up?

    Fair Dinkum!

Can I give you some advice which you don’t need to heed of course?

Do not expect to be so lucky next time, you might win but you just as easily might lose 😛

Thanks for your kind words at re your 2128, which I did reply to later, perhaps while you were at dinner.

Regarding your comments on the 50% point, yes I strongly agree. As I said in my comment about the need for a regional solution, the immigration issue should be in the same category as some defence issues once were, and not the subject of partisan politics, Then as you imply, the election can be about domestic policy, as it should be.

I think Abbott is now actually claiming he has been saying “Stop the Floats” to do with this position on SSM and Mardi Gras. Now he hasn’t got boats he needs to whip up some new fear and intolerance for the mob and this is about the only one he’s got.

I’m betting Newspoll will be delayed/postponed again this week – the Australian will not be able to bring itself to report the coming swing to rudd after it worked SO VERY hard to get a swing to abbott.

Incidentally re: abbott and the threat of goats – I once saw abbott at a community forum say wtte that “Australia has more important environmental threats (than AGW), such as rabbits”. no joke (other than abbott himself).

Did I read here that we are getting a Galaxy poll tonight?]

    don’t think so

  31. Abbott might have also been saying “Stop the Gloats” to his own backbench. However the recent turn around in Labor’s polls means that Rudd has pretty much stopped those too. What will Abbott say now? “Stop the questions?” That is probably what he wants to say.

  32. Tonight it seems that the SMH and Age paywall has disappeared, at least for the moment.

I had reached my free limit on both sites and was reading stories on Fairfax’s other sites (all the main stories are repeated on every site). Now every story on Age and SMH is freely available.

Perhaps revenue from their digital subscriptions is very poor and they want more readers to attract advertisers. Poor Fairfax, slowly going down the gurgler.
