Electorate analysis: Wagin covers the southern wheatbelt, including Albany Highway from Boddington and Wandering near Perth through Williams and Kojonup to Mount Barker, and the Great Southern Highway from Pingelly south through Narrogin, Wagin and Katanning to its junction with Albany Highway near Cranbrook. The electorate also extends eastwards to Kulin, Lake Grace and a short stretch of the southern coast at Bremer Bay. It was the only Nationals-held seat left substantially intact at the one-vote one-value redistribution before the 2008 election, which expanded the existing electorate with areas of abolished Avon in west and Roe in the east. The latest redistribution has transferred over 2000 voters in the shires of Brookton, Corrigin and Kondinin at the northern end to Central Wheatbelt, and added 4000 voters in the shires of Plantagenet and Cranbrook in the south from Blackwood-Stirling (now renamed Warren-Blackwood). Wagin has been held for the Nationals since 2001 by Terry Waldron, who has been deputy leader of the party since November 2001 and has served as Minister for Sport and Recreation, Racing and Gaming since the election of the Barnett government.
