The safe Labor seat of Mill Park is located at Melbourne’s growing northern edge, covering most of Mill Park in the south, the entirety of South Morang in the north east. Its north-west includes the eastern part of Epping, together with a corner of Wollert that encompasses a new housing estate. The redistribution has cut the Labor margin by 2.6% by shifting the electorate northwards, adding over 15,000 voters in Epping, South Morang and Wollert from Yan Yean, while in the south 8000 voters in northern Bundoora and southern Mill Park are transferred to Bundoora.
The Mill Park electorate was created in 1992, and has consistently been held for Labor by double-digit margins. Its inaugural member was Alex Adrianopolous, who shifted from the abolished western suburbs of St Albans, which he had held since 1985. Adrianopolous was succeeded upon his retirement in 2002 by his electorate officer and Socialist Left colleague Lily D’Ambrosio, who had previously been an official for the Australian Services Union. D’Ambrosio served as a parliamentary secretary after the 2006 election and then in cabinet as Community Development Minister from January 2010. In opposition she took on the portfolios of consumer protection and energy and resources, but lost the former in a reshuffle in December 2013.
